If there is one micro trend that’s making it’s way around a number of major designers it’s the balaclava.

Ideal for keeping warm and long associated with Après Ski, it has been given a chic status at Chanel and Versace who have taken it from sporty to elegant. Raf Simons suggests replacing the roll neck with one of his knitted creations at Calvin Klein which have a handmade feel and comfortably protect the head and neck from the winter chill. New name on the fashion circuit Matty Bovan worked with a houdstooth print while Preen by Thornton Bregazzi paired their almost snood-like headgear with feminine dresses or voluminous coats.

You will most likely wear the balaclava with an oversized coat or a chunky knit, but don’t be afraid to add a touch a femininity like Maria Grazia Chiuri did at Dior. Logo was the way at Balenciaga and Alexander Wang, while Maison Margiela went for maximum warmth with a puffer coat and a hat worn over the knitted balaclava.
