Lady Gaga, Celine Dion and Emma Roberts were just some of the celebrities attending the annual benefit event for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and looked amazing while doing so.
Best Dressed at the Met Gala for 2019
Each year, the Met Gala is one of the most highly anticipated fashion events on the calendar. The fundraising event in support of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute invites celebrities and industry insiders along, encouraging them to don their most outlandish, overt outfit.
It was confirmed in late 2018 that this year’s Met Gala (which took place on May 6th) and accompanying Costume Institute exhibition, will be entitled Camp: Notes on Fashion inspired by the 1964 Susan Sontag essay that describes camp as “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.” And this year the guest list didn’t disappoint.
The red carpet of the New York event was adorned with outfits in every shade of pink, ruffles and feathers that demanded attention, and glitz and glamour that refused to go unnoticed. Here are some of our favourite looks from the night.
Celine Dion in Oscar De La Renta
Speaking on the red carpet, the French Canadian music icon revealed that she originally interpreted the theme as requiring sleeping bags and overnight gear. Luckily, the Santo Domingo born designer ensured Celine looks fitting for the event – and then some.
Emma Roberts in Giambattista Valli
Julia Roberts niece channels a fairytale princess as she walked the red carpet. Borrowing a gown from Giambattista Valli’ Spring 2019 Haute Couture collection, Emma Roberts stunned in ruffled pretty pink and completed her look with a floral crown.
Lady Gaga in Brandon Maxwell
Lady Gaga donned no less than four outfits to the Met Gala on May 6th 2019, and each was as bold as the last. Our crown goes to this extravagant gown, however. She also wore a black gown, a slimming pink dressed and black underwear set.
Lupita Nyong’o in Versace
The Black Panther and Star Wars actress stunned on the (pink) red carpet in a too-the-theme Versace dress. The rainbow dress and matching bag instantly dazzled, and Lupita Nyong’o’s look was finished with party-ready makeup and combs weaved into her backcombed hair.
Cardi B in Thom Browne
We love that we can always rely on Cardi B to go above and beyond when it comes to a dress code. The New York-born rapper blanketed the carpet with his deep red gown that required a handful of assistants to help her get to and fro – and we applaud the dedication.
Saoirse Ronan in Gucci
The fire-breathing dress added a mythical feel to Saoirse Ronan’s gown of choice for the New York event, and the Lady Bird actor naturally stunned in the red floor length gown.
