Oscar De La Renta continues to explore the idea of travel for the Pre-Fall 2019 collection, taking inspiration from colours and shapes.

Since taking over at the brand, designers Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia have injected modernity and boldness to the collections, and here they have explored traditional Indian menswear shapes, showing skirt-pant combos in lightweight printed silks under Western blazers.

It is definitely a new look for Oscar de la Renta, but one that the designers feel that the house founder would’ve embraced. “Oscar believed in eclecticism in clothes, and so do we,” said Garcia. “We’re not American; we travel a lot for work. It feels natural and instinctual to us to do pieces that feel travelled.”

That sensibility extended into their eveningwear offering, where sheer tulle dresses were decorated with metallic gold threading or multicolour floral embellishments, and draped, bias-cut unconstructed numbers came in many iterations. Amid all that softness, an emerald green one-shoulder nipped-and-tucked taffeta party dress evoking the gussied-up glory days of New York in the 1980s looked freshest.

Detailing, embroidery and feathers are present, but there’s a freshness and wearability to them. The fluid and undone silhouettes feel relaxed and yet well put together, take the burgundy shirt and trousers with contrast white stitching for example.

This collection is definitely worth an adventure or two.
