NEW YORK FASHION WEEK AW17: CAROLINA HERRERA

Carolina Herrara stated her aim for this season’s collection was to showcase ‘the essence of the house of Herrera,’ and she delivered just that. She presented a polished and uncomplicated silhouette that had a sense of easiness to it, even throughout the eveningwear.

She moved the location away from her uptown show home at the Frick to an empty space in the meatpacking district with an industrial glass ceiling; it served to create a modern and serene environment.

Bows were a key detail throughout the collection; they added a feminine touch to the back of a biker jacket, they served to cinche the waist on crisp white shirts, and they added interest to the neck of simply cut evening gowns.

The collection began with a solid foundation of her signature white shirts, the key item that has helped her build her business over the years. Peter Pan collars featured with thin black velvet neck-ties. She played with the proportions of one shirt with a slim cut, balancing with voluminous sleeves. All looked crisp and elegant paired with slim black trousers and black skirts in simple A-lined shapes.

All the evening gowns had an elegant movement to them, showing Herrera’s innately feminine touch. Highlights included a gown with a rose gold sequined long sleeve top and flowing pale pink crepe skirt and a sequined tea gown with a deep V neckline modelled by Bella Hadid. Herrera finished the show with a velvet, open-backed gown in a luxuriously deep blue.

Muted shades of blue and teal, oxblood and pale pink all featured throughout making a calming and elegant colour palette. However, Herrera did make sure to use lots of monochrome which showed her collection was rooted in reality and gave her pieces versatility for when they belong in her lady’s wardrobe.

Herrera’s most faithful customers, those in search of timeless chic, surely could not be disappointed.
