The 59th Annual Grammy Awards: Tributes to the world's best in music

The world’s biggest music stars took to the red carpet last night at the Staples Center in LA for the 59^th annual Grammy Awards ceremony. James Corden had the task of taking over the reins as host from LL Cool J who had hosted for the previous five years.

As usual, the event was a feast for the eyes as stars paraded their glittering ensembles before the start of the show before going inside to take their seats.

The night began with Beyoncé leading the pack of nominees, with a total of nine to her name. Drake, Rihanna and Kanye West all had eight nominations each and Chance the Rapper had seven.

Adele kicked of the proceedings by performing her song ‘Hello’ for the crowd, a song that would go on to win her two awards during the night. She was a big winner of the evening, taking home five awards in total; Album of the year, Record of the year, Song of the year, Best pop solo performance and Best pop vocal album. According to Grammy officials, this makes Adele the first artist to sweep album, record and song of the year twice.

Later in the evening, she took to the stage again and delivered an emotional reworking of George Michael’s hit song ‘Fastlove’ in a tribute to him. In fact, she was so overwhelmed at the beginning of the performance that she had a shaky start and, in true Adele fashion, she stopped and started the whole thing again. This was met with applause and respect from the star-studded crowd.

In her final acceptance speech of the night she humbly honoured Beyoncé, who was also nominated for Album of the year, for her ‘monumental’ album Lemonade saying ‘I adore you.’

Beyoncé picked up awards for Best urban contemporary album for ‘Lemonade’, and Best music video for ‘Formation,’ but what Beyoncé will be remembered for at the 2017 Grammys was her show-stealing performance. The world had been eagerly speculating as to whether she would perform on the night, and she did not disappoint. A clearly pregnant Beyoncé took to the stage as a glittering gold goddess and gave an emotional and spiritual rendition of two of the songs from her Lemonade album, ‘Love Drought’ and ‘Sandcastles.’

It was a night where the music industry took the opportunity to honour those no longer with us. Aside from Adele’s tribute to George Michael, Bruno Mars, Morris Day and the Time took to the stage to honour Prince with a rousing performance. Day and the Time, who played in a band for Prince just months before his death said backstage after the performance, ‘His legacy will go on forever. He was one of the best musicians that ever lived.’
