Iwan Maktabi is the leading high-end rug retailer in the UAE. It’s the third generation of the famed carpet family that originated in Persia with the immigration of the patriarch of the family Hj. Hussein Maktabi. The word Iwan translates to Palace, the ancestral origin of the Maktabi family, in Persian. In 1985 Mohamed and his sisters Chirine, Mona, Yasmine, Nisrine and Zeina Maktabi reinvented the business with a fresh launch combining traditional and vintage styles with modern twists.
Iwan Maktabi today carries tribal and fine city carpets as well as Islamic art pieces and contemporary design carpets. The company also offers customised carpets through its design studio in their flagship stores.
The specialist rug store have just received the latest collection by luxury carpet designer Hossein Rezvani at their new flagship store in The Dubai Mall. His design, the Electric Taupe carpet that won the 2016 Carpet Design Award will be on display for the first time in Dubai at the store.
Rezvani’s powerful collections including ‘Persia Reinvented’ will also be available at Iwan Maktabi from April 2016. Each carpet is made with exquisite craftsmanship to achieve an emotionally touching piece, a real treasure for carpet and design enthusiasts.
“Hossein Rezvani is a staple name in the carpet industry and his work is highly celebrated, especially in this region. The way he uses traditional techniques to create unique rugs that integrate the cultural heritage of Iran into today’s living space is fantastic, and we can’t wait to show his work to our customers in Dubai,” commented Mohamed Maktabi.
Rezvani creates Persian carpets for the 21st century by reinterpreting classic craftsmanship and combining it with a contemporary yet elegant design. The rugs are manufactured by hand according to the tradition of Iranian rug knotting and consist of up to a million knots per square meter. They are made from the finest materials including fine Persian “KORK” wool from Iran and pure silk from China. Rezvani is also insistent that his work is not subjected to any mechanical or chemical processes, rather dyed exclusively with natural colours, sustainably and environmentally friendly, to allow the natural and dynamic reflections as well as the lustre of the carpets to emerge.
Hossein Rezvani has previously won numerous awards for his work, including Red Dot Design Award in 2011, German Design Award in 2013 for Tabriz Lilac, Harper’s Bazaar Interiors Design Award in 2015 for ‘Best Textile Brand’ and Carpet Design Award for Electric Taupe in 2016.
Rezvani’s carpets are available at the new Iwan Maktabi store, which opened earlier this year at The Dubai Mall.
