Europe’s dazzling festive markets

It’s that most wonderful time of the year – when the festive season gets in full swing. Get yourself full festive and visit one of Europe’s lesser known traditional Christmas markets for a wintery, romantic break.

Switzerland

Head to Zurich for Europe’s largest indoor market that can be found in the old train station. Smell the cinnamon wafting through the air and spot the twinkling Swarovski covered tree. All that shopping can work up a hunger so pop into the Baur Au Lac hotel for a themed afternoon tea and a stay in this five star, classically European 170 year old hotel. With views over the lake and Michelin starred restaurants, you’re in safe hands.

Holland
Aside from the beautiful Festival of Light that enchants Amsterdam every December, the city has a charming Christmas Village by its renowned museum, the Rijksmuseum and if you’re lucky you might be able to ice skate on the frozen canals. Warm up cold toes in the boutique luxury hotel, The Dylan who are offering a special six course winter tasting menu.

Gothenburg is known locally as ‘Christmas City’ once it gets to this time of year. With 700 fir trees and over five million lights the city transforms itself into a winter wonderland, and of course you have the guaranteed snow. Day trips to go sledding, sleigh riding or to meet reindeer are easy to arrange for the whole Scandinavian experience. Keep cosy warm in the city’s Clarion Post Hotel, the former post office that’s now a design lead five star hotel with a spa.
