NEW YORK FASHION WEEK AW17: ALEXANDER WANG

The dramatic location for the Alexander Wang show yesterday evening was the abandoned RKO Hamilton theatre on 146th and Broadway. The concept was set in advance, with the invites clearly stating ‘NO AFTER PARTY,’ although that did not stop the fashion crowd and celebrities alike showing up in their droves.

To kick off, the models were wrapped up warm in black overcoats and loose double breasted blazers. In traditional Wang style, he introduced casual elements to these smart pieces by mixing sweat-shirting elements with the tailored suiting.

This was quickly broken up by a flash of skin that made an impact in the form a fitted off-the-shoulder jumpsuit, held up by the thinnest of shoulder straps and accessorised with a chunky silver choker.

The show was almost all black, but the textures and materials used gave the black elements life. A fun ruffled edge skirt and denim jacket combo injected a bit of wearable fun. Leather shorts and trousers were stretched over the models’ legs with chunky silver metal button flies. Fringed jackets and shirts added movement and gave a nod to a Western-inspired look. Although not straying too far from black, a grey Prince of Wales check used on coats, jumpsuits and trousers gave a smart yet cool injection of print to the collection.

In keeping with the theme, the girls in the shorter styles had ‘NO AFTER PARTY’ boldly stamped on their stockings as they marched down the runway.

Bella Hadid made her New York Fashion Week debut looking as cool as ever with rock-chick kohl lined eyes and ‘just rolled out of bed’ hair. She walked down the catwalk in black leather hot-pants and a white long sleeve tee that read ‘Night of Treason,’ the name of a little-known punk band.

For the final walk, models lapped the runway and stepped off through the party. Then Wang took to the runway for his bow in a black tee with the slogan of the night ‘NO AFTER PARTY’ clearly emblazoned. Of course, there is no need for an after-party when the show is a party in itself.
