NEW YORK FASHION WEEK AW17: ALTUZARRA

Today, Joseph Altuzarra presented his Fall 2017 Read-To-Wear Collection, which was inspired by Northern Renaissance art. “It was a time,” he said, “when people became interested in how people really looked.” As a result, Altuzarra’s collection was a sumptuous mix of luxurious textures and deep, rich colours.

Velvet was a prominent feature within this collection, with tailored trouser suits, dresses and jackets taking centre stage. Velvet Alice bands accompanied most of the looks, some embellished with pearls, which really set off the Renaissance theme and allowed for some looks to appear as though they were modelled after Anne Boyleyn herself. However, the collection managed to achieve a balance of modernity by featuring thick-soled combat boots, laddered tights and large shoulder bags.

Outerwear was a particular highlight, with plenty of oversized coats and capes featuring frogging closures, pearl trims and embellishments and fur collars. The show closed with three stunning gowns, featuring narrow strips of fabric stitched together upon which Altuzarra layered the gold and glass embroidery.

A visually stunning collection that had everyone begging to get up close to study the exquisite details and fabrics. We particularly like how Altuzarra steered away from the Victoriana trend and went back even further, to the Renaissance era. A brave and creative move for a designer who has always used his passion for art and culture as his inspiration throughout his collections.
