NEW YORK FASHION WEEK AW17: OSCAR DE LA RENTA

Yesterday Oscar de la Renta revealed their Fall 2017 Ready-To-Wear Collection, which received very mixed opinions. An industry first, saw Oscar de la Renta’s designers, Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia showcase both Oscar de la Renta and their own label, Monse. After years of working with Mr de la Renta themselves, one would think that the Oscar de la Renta legacy would be instilled in this collection. However, Kim and Garcia made sure that they injected their own youthful touch to the label, which inevitably created quite a stir.

Garish and clashing colours, skin tight, striped pieces and bold fabrics and prints were evidence of a young and energetic duo. Many of the looks had an almost sci fi feel about them, with many pieces featuring reflective, shiny materials and asymmetric shapes. 80’s power dressing was also a prominent theme, with plenty of bold shoulders, over sized outerwear, and tailored pieces.

However, the collection also featured plenty of the style evocative of the Oscar de la Renta we all remember and envisage. Exquisite ball gowns featured dramatic hemlines, intricate beading, embroidery and eye catching textures and prim suits were simple and elegantly tailored.

A controversial collection for those who believe in the legacy Mr de la Renta left behind. However, for those looking for a more forward take on the brand, this was a successful attempt at pleasing both the old and new Oscar de la Renta fans.
