From contemporary tailoring to decadent eveningwear, Azzi & Osta SS19 collection will make you feel like a modern day aristocrat.
Lebanese born design duo George Azzi and Asaad Osta are propelling Middle Eastern design sensibility onto a global scale with their unique approach to couture-level craftsmanship. When chatting to A&E in the September issue, the duo spoke of the regional influences:
“Azzi & Osta is primarily a Couture House, we think we are lucky to be based in the Middle East, where Couture is mostly appreciated. The Middle East is home to the majority of Couture clients, and Couture is in the DNA of Middle Eastern Culture.”
Presented during Paris Fashion Week, they pay homage to Polish painter Tamara de Lempicka in a collection entitled The Baroness With A Brush. The Avant-Garde artist was highly known for her Art Deco portraits of the upper class crowds in the twenties and her individualism, love of travel served as thoughtful inspiration for next seasons’ pieces.
“The collection speaks to the free-spirited woman; the trend-setter who is unique, unconventional in her way of living and independent,” the said in a statement.
The silhouettes are asymmetric with conceptual volumes created from a variety of fabrics such as tulle, lurex and silk chiffon. The sharp suits and broad shoulders of Tamara’s paintings are translated into feminine lines in the dresses, jumpsuits, tailored ensembles and capes, while the details of the portraits are transformed into embroidery appliques. The colour palette is vibrant and intense and includes primrose yellow, emerald green, fiery red, crisp white, classic black and neutral nudes.

One of the most fashion forward events of the year, and recently a subject of an all-female film Ocean’s 8, announced the theme for 2019.
The New York Metropolitan Museum of Art confirmed that next year’s Met Gala, and accompanying Costume Institute exhibition, will be entitled “Camp: Notes on Fashion” inspired by the 1964 Susan Sontag essay that describes camp as “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.”
Traditionally taking place a day before the first Monday of May, it’s the fashion world’s biggest night of year that sees A-listers and designers walk the red carpet in the most jaw-dropping creations, and it sounds like in 2019 they can really push the boundaries.
Around 175 objects from the 17th Century to present day will be displayed, with Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, Serena Williams and Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele all named as co-chairs.
This year, the annual fundraising gala required guests to dress in pieces that captured the “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” theme so we saw Katie Perry done angel wings while Rihanna stepped out in a Pope-inspired shimmering design.
Something tell us that the next addition will be the most experimental yet.
Established in 2013, Edinburgh-based luxury label Strathberry has become an international favourite since first spotted on Meghan Markle.
Meghan has been seen carrying the brand’s designs since her very first official royal outing with Prince Harry in Nottingham in December 2017 and naturally, everyone now wants one (or two) of their creations.
This November, Strathberry will launch an exclusive Middle East capsule collection available at Harvey Nichols – Dubai, featuring an elegant version of The Strathberry Nano Tote in luxurious embossed croc available in a range of bold yet sophisticated colours perfect for the holiday season.
Co-owner and founder Leeanne Hundleby talks to A&E about the ‘Meghan Effect’ on the brand and their plans for the future.
Tell us a little bit about your background and how you started Strathberry.
Strathberry was founded by my husband Guy and I. We always had a passion for beautiful handcrafted leather goods and a strong interest in design. On our travels with our kids, we were exploring the artisanal leather regions of Spain and were inspired by the generations of craftsmanship and skills in working with leather. We had a desire to create a brand in Scotland that had an international outlook and so established Strathberry when we returned to the UK. We started by building paper model versions of the now iconic Strathberry shapes and ran the business out of the studio attached to our house for the first few years.
Why did you decide to base it in Edinburgh?
I am from Ireland while Guy is from Scotland and Edinburgh is where our family – counting four kids and a dog called Jess – is based. Edinburgh is a stunning city with plenty to offer and we could not imagine a better home for Strathberry.
What is the current design scene in Scotland?
Edinburgh has a thriving and fast-growing design scene and it is a great place for creatives who want to work in fashion and design but want to be based somewhere a bit less frantic. We are only a few hours on the train from London so it can offer a fantastic work life balance. Scotland, in general, is a unique source of inspiration with its stunning scenery and beautiful landscape.
Describe the creative process and manufacturing?
The bags are designed in our Edinburgh office and beautifully handcrafted in the mountain regions of Spain. Both Guy and I are actively involved in the creative process and craftsmanship and attention to detail are at the core of our work here at Strathberry. We work very closely with our workshops and they have really helped us to grow our knowledge throughout the years. We are perfectionists and always aim to produce high quality luxury products for our customers to cherish year after year while still being true to Strathberry’s clean and contemporary aesthetic.
What do you think makes Strathberry different from other leather bag brands?
At Strathberry we have a huge focus on creativity and quality – there aren’t many brands offering the same level of considered design, attention to detail and quality at our price points. We simply don’t cut corners and love the fact that we are able to offer customers a product which is so carefully designed and beautifully made, yet at a price point which is more accessible. In addition, our recognizable silhouettes and use of the metal bar have become a brand signature.
How has your label evolved since the ‘Meghan Markle’ effect?
The response has been phenomenal since Meghan carried the three bags. We were already beginning to take the brand internationally, and have noticed an increased demand and awareness for the brand cross the globe. We have now secured more wholesale accounts and have observed an increased interest from fashion press and influencers.
How important was this royal recognition for the growth of your business?
Whilst we were already taking the brand internationally it would be fair to say that Meghan does carry significant influence and by carrying a bag from our collection she did excel the growth of the brand exponentially.
Who else would you like to see carrying your bags?
There are so many fantastic women we would love to see carrying our bag, from Beyoncé to Queen Rania of Jordan.
What challenges do you face today?
There are many challenges we face today from adapting to the latest technology to knowing our customers and treating them with a personal touch. However to be honest we always try to look at challenges as opportunities. We try to stay open-minded, flexible and innovative in our approach and attitude.
Why did you decide to create a capsule collection for the Middle East?
We always love working with our retail partners as it enables us to offer something different to our customers and we were delighted to work on a capsule for the Middle East. In this capsule collection we have reworked one of our iconic styles, the Strathberry Nano Tote, in luxurious embossed croc in a range of bold yet sophisticated colours.
How would you define luxury?
I would define luxury by the ethos for quality and craftsmanship, which is integral to Strathberry. Each bag can take up to 20 hours to make and they are handmade in limited quantities by skilled artisans.
What’s next for Strathberry?
We are opening our first store in London this November which is a massive milestone for the brand. We also have a number of exciting new styles and collaborations coming out in 2019.
Describe the view from your window today…
Strathberry HQ is a Georgian townhouse in Edinburgh’s West End, we are very fortunate and can see Edinburgh castle from the window.
What’s your personal motto?
As I have the 4 kids I find myself using the two same mottos over and over again.
I think these are great mottos for a family.
In Dubai we are never short of luxury getaways, especially when it comes to designer hotels, so imagine our delight when we heard there’s a new shiny destination in the works.
Italian designers seem to have fallen in love with our desert city as Armani, Versace and Bvlgari have all found a home for their properties here, so it’s no surprise that Roberto Cavalli decided to join the ranks.
The iconic label partnered with Dubai property developer DAMAC’s new hospitality brand Aykon Hotels to design the interiors for at least five luxury residences, with the first one being a 220-room tower in Dubai Marina that will open in 2023.
What to expect from a brand known for seaside glamour and wild prints? The first of the hotels will have a bridal suite, balconies, picturesque views of the Palm Jumeriah, infinity pools, several food and drink outlets as well as a Roberto Cavalli boutique.
Now, doesn’t that sound bellissimo?
The sixth edition of Downtown Design, part of Dubai Design Week, will present its most diverse and ambitious showcase to date, featuring over 175 exhibiting brands including 40 regional designers.
New fair features will include bespoke café concepts, a pop-up retail destination, indoor landscapes and large-scale installations on the fair’s waterfront terrace. Last year, Fair Director at Downtown Design, Rue Kothari spoke to us about how the concept has evolved over the years and added:
“We work with the buyer community around the region to ensure that make the fair the one Middle East fixture they attend in their yearly design calendar. And with the word spreading globally, space in the fair is sold out early every year. Our concept is truly unique and we’re very proud that it’s based here in Dubai.”
With a spotlight on the region’s design talent, Downtown Design’s new fair section ‘Downtown Editions’ will present bespoke and limited-edition design works from across the world, for professional as well as public visitors to discover, purchase and commission.
Founder and CEO of creative consultancy Hamzat Wasl, Hind Bin Demaithan is one of the two Emirati designers selected to represent Dubai’s pavilion within this year’s edition of Abwab, under this year’s theme ‘Between the Lines’.
The Downtown Design talks programme will reflect on the growth of the design economy with 25 global design experts including award-winning designers Ini Archibong, Marc Ange, Martyn Lawrence Bullard and Matthew McCormick.

How do you safely transport a priceless work of art from Amsterdam to Tokyo? In a specially made Louis Vuitton trunk of course.
True to its passion for creation and strong support of the arts, Louis Vuitton and the Rijksmuseum have teamed up for a VIP transportation of the masterpiece painting The Milkmaid from Amsterdam to the Ueno Royal Museum in Tokyo, Japan.
The Milkmaid, sometimes called The Kitchen Maid, is an oil-on-canvas painting of a “milkmaid“ by Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer and is regarded by the Rijksmuseum as one of its most important pieces. Michael Burke, Chairman and CEO of Louis Vuitton, said in a statement:
“Louis Vuitton has always supported the greatest pioneers and artists on their travels. A real passion for creation, Louis Vuitton has always supported the arts and cultural heritage. It is an honor for us to design the bespoke case that will transport and protect one of the most famous international masterpieces of all times.”
The trunk, handcrafted in Louis Vuitton’s historic workshops in Asnières, has been meticulously produced to house The Milkmaid painting. Adorned in the iconic Monogram canvas and the signature brass corners and lock. The trunk features personalized hand-painted stripes along with a yellow-coloured interior evoking the main colours of the masterpiece.
Louis Vuitton is the master-packer of some of the most precious items in the world. In 1924, the House made a trunk for René Gimpel, a French art gallerist, enabling him to travel worldwide to present and propose masterpieces to his clients. Since then, Louis Vuitton has been entrusted by clients around the world to transport their art and supplies, creating cases that protect and transport their belongings in the most optimal conditions.
The Milkmaid will be on display in Ueno Royal Museum until February 3 2019.

Over the weekend, Nobel Peace Prize winners were announced as Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad for their efforts to stop the use of sexual violence as a weapon in war.
Both have courageously persevered in their plans to make a change despite the dangers and have shined a light on an ongoing heartache and struggle for women in vulnerable areas. Congolese gynaecologist Denis Mukwege treated thousands of rape victims while Nadia Murad, the Iraqi Yazidi, was sold into sex slavery by Isis.
Murad’s story in particular struck a chord with team A&E as despite the trauma suffered at the hands of her captors, that were part of the Isis group that tore apart her Iraqi village, and despite the repeated rape from militants who thought they deserved a sabaya (sex slave), she continues to talk about her ordeal and has written an autobiography.
Titled the The Last Girl because she wants to be “the last girl in the world with a story like mine” and has supported other victims and with the backing from politicians and human rights lawyer Amal Clooney. She continues to seek justice by gathering evidence to bring militants to trial in a legal case against Islamic State commanders.
“We must work together with determination — to prove that genocidal campaigns will not only fail, but lead to accountability for the perpetrators and justice for the survivors,” Murad said in a statement.
Telling her story not only highlights the injustice happening today, but also reminds the winder public that sexual violence has been used as a weapon throughout history and it’s time to put a stop to it, and her story is the most powerful weapon she has.
“My story, told honestly and matter-of-factly, is the best weapon I have against terrorism, and I plan on using it until those terrorists are put on trial. There is still so much that needs to be done,” she told the Guardian newspaper.
Murad dreamed of being a teacher or working in a beauty salon, her dreams didn’t come true, but being awarded one of the most prestigious awards in the world will keep the cause on the forefront of the public’s minds and help prevent other girls dreams’ being ripped away from them.

So far, 2018 has been a significant year for women in Saudi Arabia and now they have another milestone to celebrate.
Thanks to Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Vision 2030 mission, several historic announcements have made global news including women finally being allowed to drive, become soldiers and air traffic controllers as well as work at General Directorate of Passports.
Now for the first time, a woman has been appointed to run a Saudi Bank. Lubna Al Olayan will head up the merger of Alawwal Bank and Saudi British Bank, the third biggest bank in the region, after being a deputy chair of Alawwal Bank for four years.
This will not come as a surprise to many who have been following her inspirational journey. A long standing pioneer for women in Saudi Arabia, back in 2004 she was elected to the board of Saudi Hollandi Bank, becoming the first woman in the country to feature on the board of a public company.
A year on, she co-chaired the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland and this year she topped the ranking of Forbes Middle East’s most influential women.
Seems like the winds of change are blowing strongly through the Kingdom.
Dolce & Gabbana paid tribute to the brand’s unmistakable DNA during their recent collection in Milan, with the beauty look taking on the timeless signature of bright colours on lips and nails and fresh polished skin contrasting with intense eyes.
Now, the design duo are in Dubai to stage their very first runway show and those attending will need to look their part head to toe. Below, we share with you a step by step guide to the SS19 beauty look that will never go out of style.
SKIN
To achieve a flawless and luminous complexion, make-up artists used MILLENNIALSKIN On-The-Glow Tinted Moisturizer, blending the lightweight texture outward from the center of the face, to create a lit-from-within glow effect. The new MILLENNIALSKIN On-The-Glow Longwear Concealer was applied under the eyes and along the nose to lighten the shadowed areas and get extra radiance. A stroke of colour was added on the cheeks with the Creamy Blush in Rosa Carina 30 to give them a natural flush.
EYES
On the eyelids, the warm nude shade of the Perfect Mono Eyeshadow in Desert 40 was applied to create the perfect base, and a bit of the Gold Dust 20 pearly nude shade was delicately added for light and shimmer. Complementary neutral tones from nude to chocolate of The Eyeshadow Quad in Desert 123 were added with the blending brush all over the lid, extending it out toward the temple and up to the brow bone for a natural yet sharp effect.
To create the iconic intense liner flicks, make-up artists drawn a fluid line with the Emotioneyes High Definition Eyeliner Stylo in Nero 1 or the Glam Liner in Black Intense 1 along the top of the upper lashes and extended it out. As finishing touch, a few coats of the Passioneyes mascara in Nero 1 were swished on the curled top lashes, to get a volumizing effect. Brows were sculpted and filled with colour using The Brow Liner in shade matching hair colour.
LIPS
The look kept an important focus on the lips with sumptuous colours, an explosive HUES palette to recall the magnificent gardens of flowers in Italy. Depending on what they were wearing, models’ lips were painted in either warm nude, vivid pink, true red or deep burgundy – creamy or matte textures of the Classic Cream Lipstick and the Dolce Matte Lipstick.
NAILS
On the nails, models wore The Nail Lacquer in a variety of playful colours to make every look truly unique.
Last night, Dolce & Gabbana took over the fashion avenue in the Dubai Mall to stage their first ever show in the region and it was as extravagant as you’d expect.
Over 100 models glided down the escalators to the glittering navy carpet that was lined with press and fans of the house. As classical music provided by musicians from La Scala blended with the modern performance from a string trio, out came a series of looks inspired by Arabian nights.
“The show for Dubai is just for Dubai. You cannot see in another place, the same clothes, the same mood, the same things. It is special. And the audience feels it,” said Stefano Gabbana in a press conference earlier that day.
Here are just some of the treats you might have missed from last night’s extravaganza.
The Clothes
Design duo sent out 128 looks in total with around half created exclusively for the region as a ‘tribute to Dubai.’
The Royals
In the press briefing, Stefano said that: “All, or at least 99 per cent of women, want to feel like a queen or a princess. They want to feel beautiful.” So aside from the feathers, brocade and embellishment there were a number of crowns and tiaras (boys included).
Middle Eastern Inspired Makeup
The duo observed that women from the Middle East have a lot in common with the women in the south of Italy, especially when it comes to makeup. For the show, makeup artists focused on the eyes and models were sent out with elongated or heavy black eyeliner.
Modest Italiana
From gowns, tailoring and sportswear to new versions of abayas, the styling had a modest attitude with headscarves in particular enhancing the looks.
The Afterparty
After a long finale, a number of VIP guests headed to H Hotel to continue the celebrations in a lavishly decorated setting. A series of tables were adorned in flower arrangements, bowls of fruit and Sicialian ceramic heads (Dolce & Gabbana have previously dedicated a collection to Sicilian folklore inspired by the Moorish Heads). Fun fact, the art of Maiolica pottery was brought to Sicily by the Arabs who taught Sicilian how to create these objects.
For two years, Louis Vuitton has been creating fragrant masterpieces for both men and women. Cherish your favourite perfume as you do a work of art with a leather case, or in one of their expertly made trunks.

The Department of Culture and Tourism in Abu Dhabi yesterday held a brainstorming session which aimed to promote children’s literature which featured an elite group of writers, painters and visual artists.
Held at Manarat Al Saadiyat and entitled ‘Multaqa Fikra’ (Idea Forum) the session invited 30 creatives like Dr. Fatima Al Braiki, authors Asma Kalban and Sahar Naja Mahfouz and writer Nadia Al Najjar to share their innovative ideas. Abdullah Majed Al Ali, Acting Executive Director of DCT Abu Dhabi’s National Library Sector, said:
“This event’s significance is a testament to DCT Abu Dhabi’s belief that children’s literature plays a pivotal role in the child’s cognitive and emotional growth. Children live in a world of their own, using language and expressions that suit their thinking and perception.
“A writer must delve into the child’s mindset to produce works that piques a child’s interest. We hope to see this special event become an annual tradition, allowing us to discuss challenges and reach solutions together, and connect writers with artists to create different knowledge-rich materials that appeal to children and drive their passion for reading.”
Some suggested training workshops to improve the reading and writing skills of participants in the “Creative Reader Competition”, “The Young Writer Competition”, and the “Meet the Author” programme, while others proposed creating a platform or application that provides information on authors and illustrators of children’s literature, alongside their works.
In a digital age where it’s all about swiping, getting children engaged in literature has never been more important for their development.

The meticulous care given to the choice of the various leather skins is pushed further with the addition of new materials and bright colours. What has been your most unusual day at work?
A fan at a show of mine was screaming lyrics to a song I was singing, it wasn’t in tune, a bit distracting… They proceeded to demand that they come onstage and sing a song with me bothering my drummer and the entire second act of my show. I never sang with them, they were quite upset and told me they were VIP and I was the first artist to ever turn them down. I respectfully told them it wouldn’t be fair to my audience, my band or the staff at the venue who put in many hours and sacrificed so they could have a great experience. That was by far rather unusual.
Three items you can’t live without?
Water, food, and music.
Complete the sentence: I’m happy when…
I spend time with loved ones and friends.

I go to the spa.

If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self to continue to work hard and don’t become complacent with success. No matter how hard the situation find a way to communicate. Also, when you find your tribe of likeminded individuals who want to see you succeed as bad as you want to see them succeed, love them hard and always support them. It takes a village to remain successful.
Did you have a plan B career path?
Yes I did, I went to school for broadcasting, technology and management. I’ve contemplated a career in radio, marketing and teaching the arts.
Who would you like to be stuck on a desert island with?
Hopefully the love of my life.
What’s your personal motto?
Stay encouraged, humble, gracious and to always create possibilities for success. The possibilities are endless.
How do you want the world to remember you?
Hopefully as someone who brought them joy, and shined a light of love for all humanity.
Soul artist and actor Rogelio Douglas, Jr. will be performing at Q’s bar, Palazzo Versace from until December 1.
Fashion month might be over, but there was plenty to take away from the streets of Paris to update your winter wardrobe with.
Step Into The Wild
For anyone who finds animal print a tad OTT will welcome a slightly more subtle, yet still incredibly fierce, way of incorporating it into their day to day wardrobe. That’s right, we are talking accessories with a particular emphasis on boots. Rochas have some great options on offer as well as Aquazzura.
Architectural Tailoring
A beautifully tailored blazer can take you from casual to chic as soon as you shrug it onto your shoulders. This season, step back from the straight line or elongated silhouettes in favour of something a little more creative, like the twisted jackets we’ve spotted at Jacquemus.
Wear With Everything Coats
If you’re going to invest in something for winter, make it a beautifully made coat. From classic shapes, deconstructed parkers, timeless trench coats and a play on textures, there’s a tribe for everyone. Personally, we have Loewe on our wish list.
Tote Love
Mini bags look cute, but functionality takes priority. You don’t have to go maxi to make a statement, but spacious tote bags not only look stylish but provide enough room for your everyday needs. Go bold, go Gucci.
Chunky Belts
There are times when you look at an outfit and feel that it’s lacking something. This season its all about the chunky belts – particularly the square buckle variety. Cinch in your coats and jackets or simply add a certain je ne sais quoi to a classic white shirt.
From today, head to the recently revamped Dior boutique in the Dubai Mall and get creative with your very own customized bag.
ABCDIOR bespoke concept gives customers some artistic license as you can add your name to the must-have Book Tote that has already been spotted on a number of A-Listers including their very own brand ambassador for Dior Cruise 2019 Jennifer Lawrence.
The delicate embroidery can take up to two days to craft with over one-and-a-half million stitches at a family-run atelier in Italy – so it’s pretty special.
If you want to treat yourself, or give someone a truly iconic gift with a touch of savoir-flair, then make sure to book a date with the Dior store soon as this limited service will only be available until October 14.
Just in case you haven’t noticed your social media feed taken over by snaps of Rihanna, the singer was in Dubai yesterday to host her first ever live makeup class.
Fenty Beauty Artistry & Beauty Talk With Rihanna saw the star with two of the Fenty Beauty global makeup artists, Priscilla Ono and Hector Espinal, present a giddy audience with tips on how to use some of her key products through demonstrations with help of leading models like Halima, and ask Rihanna questions about her own story with makeup.
The class ended with a premiere of a new Stunna Lip Paint shade in a deep black shade named ‘Uninvited,’ and then Rihanna headed to 112th floor of the Burj Khalifa to celebrate with selected guests before stopping by at Sephora in the Dubai Mall to greet more of her fans.
She talked about the process of making her beauty brand come to life, showcased some of her skills and gave away a few more secrets about the future of Fenty Beauty. Here is what we took away from the sold out event.
Her Mother Inspired Her Love Of Makeup
Rihanna spoke of her mother as the first image of beauty and reflected on her younger self watching her mum apply makeup.
She Uses Two Foundation Shades
Your skin is always changing, and so does Riri’s. From the Fenty range, she normally wears 320 but if she’s tanned then she applies 360.
Fenty Beauty Is Expanding
It was hard for her not to give away too much with the eager fans asking her for mascara’s and eyebrow kits. Although she didn’t confirm on expanding beyond her current lines, she did say that: “There will be no stone left unturned.” She also said that her dream is for clients to go into Sephora and get everything they need from the Fenty Beauty stand without having to look to other brands.
She Creates Products That Are Versatile
Throughout the talk she constantly reminded the audience that most of the products were designed to use anywhere on the face, and even body. For her, it’s important to have only a couple of items in her bag that can do it all.
She Also Gets Carried Away With Makeup
Rihanna finds makeup application a sort of ‘therapy’ and can blend over and over again. Sometimes that creates a dramatic look that we’ve seen at various events including the Met Gala in 2017, but on most days she prefers to either focus on the eyes or the lips.
From a complete overhaul at Celine to lip syncing models at Balmain, it was a weekend of triumphs and split opinions.
The reviews have been pouring in after Hedi Slimane’s debut at Celine, and it’s a mixed reaction. Many love his bold vision for the house, while others feel it’s too like his days at Saint Laurent and are mourning the modern feminine silhouettes from Phoebe Philo. In the show notes, he pointed out that the men’s styles will also be rolled out for women and that’s where he really showed his strength. Not only this was a first men’s collection for the house, but the tailoring was really impressive and will offer Philo fans something to look forward to.
There was something truly wonderful happening over at Loewe as Jonathan Anderson showcased his flair for distorted shapes and creative use of textures with exceptional accessories. A number of experts have already pointed out that Loewe can step into the Philo shaped hole. Among all the patchwork and mildly deconstructed ensembles stood and expertly made collection of easy-to-wear pieces that looked delicate and elegant.
Olivier Rousteing doesn’t play by the rules and is boldly pushing his vision for Balmain forward. Cara Delevingne made her return to the runway as she opened and closed the show while lip syncing to Prince. It was outrageous, bold, vibrant and excessive – just as fans of Balmain like it. Parisian architecture and Egyptian sculptures were his inspiration so we saw hard shoulders, almost concrete-like lines and mini dresses decorated with pyramid shapes. To break up the edgier pieces he introduced organza to some of the gowns and dresses. The geometry and mish mash of fabrics was wild, but he made it all work harmoniously. Of course, you’d struggle to wear some of it, but deep down inside you really want to and that bold creativity is what makes Rousteing so appealing.
There was delicate glamour mixed with strong sensuality at Elie Saab. He showcased his interpretation on spring floral with lazer cut shapes on leather, flowing gowns with dark micro blooms and sheer lace dresses that had flowers gently embroidered into them. The mini dresses with blazers offered something for daytime, as did the sequin shorts with a matching bomber jacket. For the office, we are a little bit in love with a caped white shirt worn with tailored wide leg trousers in navy. He added a dash of leopard spots and multi-colour stripes, but in the end brought it back to his garden with flowing gowns that offered prettiness with every petal, and sensuality through his cleaver use of transparency.
Longchamp Racecourse awaited guests for the Hermès SS19 that focused less on the equestrian looks – despite the location – and more on relaxed glamour with elements of sports lux. Using neutral palette as the base, we saw boxy separates, beautifully crafted leather coats, drawstring cagoules and dresses. The rope detail on some the tops stood out as well as clean tailored trousers and an elegant use of leather in jackets and dresses.
Sonia Rykiel has spent the year celebrating the 50th anniversary of the brand and last night was a particularly special moment as the show was staged on of a Sixth Arrondissement allée that was named after the late designer. She was known for her colourful knitwear and there was plenty of it during the SS19 show, but Rykiel’s creative director Julie de Libran was inspired by fact that the street is used for a Sunday market. She channeled the ‘no dress code’ atmosphere by styling the models in a mix of pieces like lace dresses and trench coats – something you’d pull on quickly when you want to rush out the door and grab a freshly baked baguette. There were dogs and kids on the runway, as well as netted knitwear to mimic the market bags.
For the Dior SS19 collection, Peter Philips, creative and image director for Dior make-up, created a natural make-up look with an emphasis on eyes.
“For this collection Maria Grazia Chiuri asked artist Sharon Eyal to choreograph the runway show, and have the dancers from her company participate. This aesthetic choice prompted me to create a pure, natural make-up look, where emphasis was placed only on the eyes. And for a few of the models I also took inspiration from Sharon Eyal’s unusual eye make-up.”
Here, Philips talk us through each step to recreate this artistic, yet natural look at home.
Eyes
For this collection, he created two looks. “Eyes were made-up with a line of Diorshow Khôl in black, applied to the waterline of the lower lash line, but which also ran over a bit in some places. This intentionally blurry, imperfect line created an impression of make-up that has been lived in. I also defined the eyebrows without accentuating them too much, with Diorshow Brow Styler and Diorshow Bold Brow.”
A second look, inspired by Sharon Eyal’s own make-up, is described by Philips as “a design drawn on the temples using broad strokes of Diorshow Pro Liner Waterproof in black and anthracite. This decorative ‘choreography’ of the face is a creative gesture.”
Complexion
“Complexions looked pure and natural in Diorskin Forever & Ever Wear Primer, then Diorskin Backstage Face & Body Foundation followed by a corrective touch of Diorskin undercover concealer. I created a matte finish for the whole look with a dusting of Diorskin Forever & Ever Control Loose powder.”
Lips
Lips were kept natural natural and were prepped with Lip Sugar Scrub then heightened with Lip Maximizer for a touch of very discreet shine.
Nails and Hair
He used Dior Vernis N°108 Muguet while the hair was wrapped around the head for a smooth dancer-like result.

An official changing of the guard occurred in Paris tonight as Hedi Slimane completely remodelled Phoebe Philo’s Celine into his DNA.
Over the last few years Celine has become synonymous with Philo, and many designers would’ve perhaps kept some of her triumphs to please her loyal customers, but not Slimane. The designer has defined his own style over a rich 20-year career and shook the house with his aesthetic, and even introduced a men’s line.
Despite the debut being shrouded in secrecy, he did make a few significant changes ahead of the show – like removing the accent from the name and giving his first interview. He also unveiled another bag a few days prior that nodded to the brand’s past, specifically the 70’s and 80’s – the decades that Slimane did very well with during a four year stint at Saint Laurent, as now here.
Disco lights dazzled the runway as esteemed guests like Lady Gaga and Karl Lagerfeld looked upon a practically all black collection – with touches of metallics, punk pink and intoxicating green – of mini dress, short prom skirts, biker jackets, accented shoulders and perfectly tailored suits that were all styled with cowboy boots.
Inspired by the iconic clubs of Paris, he delivered his expertly crafted 80’s midnight glamour which was met with a vigorous applause from the show goers. As a drummer dressed in ceremonial uniforms of the Garde Républicaine stepped out onto the darkened runway, models marched out to the beat of his drum – a powerful salute to the new era at Celine.
When Phoebe Philo stepped down fans of her work were in mourning – and some might still be after tonight. But this collection will propel them, and emerging customers, into a new type of frenzy, and that’s what the brand wanted and that’s why Slimane is the person for this job.
Columbian designer Johanna Ortiz creates feminine, bright and joyful pieces that are made for endless summer – perfect for us in Dubai.
She offers and fresh and wearable colour palette and uses frills, bows and oversized proportions to add another dimension to all her pieces. If you’re a fan of ruffles, wiggle skirts and signature off-the-shoulder tops then Ortiz is for you.
Below, we meet the designer behind the label that can’t help but make you smile.
Who is the Johanna Ortiz woman?
The #JOwoman is festive and effortlessly elegant. She is a refined traveler who enjoys escaping to the tropics with the sand on her feet.
Tell us a little bit about your background and how you started in fashion.
I studied at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale in the US. Then, I came back to Colombia and launched the brand with Resort collections. Soon, what I was doing evolved to a Latin-style ready-to-wear brand for the global woman.
Your collections always feel fun and joyful, what inspires you?
I always keep in mind our festive joie de vivre. I can say that in Colombia, we enjoy life at its fullest. But most of my inspiration comes from art, my travels, books and the botanical scenarios from the tropics.
Describe your design process?
I start with the inspiration, always thinking of what surrounds me, from banana trees, orchids, birds, it comes from palm trees to cockatoos. I produce a mood board with colors, vintage photos and fabrics that I find on trips and then I work closely with My team! We have some fun while drawing and painting and giving life and color to the ideas.
What role did Moda Operandi play in helping your brand reach a global audience?
It has been more than four years since we launched the brand to the international market, thanks to Moda Operandi. Moda has been an essential partner for our global vision for the brand.
What is your first fashion memory?
Using my mother’s interior design fabrics…
How has the fashion industry changed since you first launched your label?
I think the biggest change we all have all seen is the rise of digital and e-commerce. The truth is that e-commerce has opened doors to the international market and Instagram has brought us closer to our consumer. In terms of aesthetic, I think Fashion is always running from one style to another; women, however, always want to feel feminine. That will never change.
How important is it for the collections to reflect what you yourself would wear every day?
I always wear the clothes. It’s important to feel the clothes in real life situations; feeling the fabric is essential as I have to know how it will fit on the body. I live in a tropical paradise and that’s why we design collections that have a very resort feel. At the same time though, I do travel a lot so I like to design for moments in big cities and colder environments.
How has the brand and your design aesthetic evolved over the years.
We started as a Resort brand but soon evolved into ready-to-wear with a very couture-like process. We keep the essence of the brand; everything is produced in-house and we try to move forward in silhouettes while having fun designing each collection. We are also working with more sustainable fabrics, taking the company in a more ‘green’ direction. We have grown from a small team to 380 people working in Colombia.
What challenges do you face today?
I always push myself to be more creative and authentic. I am always striving to remain relevant in today’s ever-changing world.
What can we look forward to in your latest collection?
For spring-summer 2019, the starting point of the collection was Paul Jacoulet, a true renaissance man. He was French but born and raised in Japan; a good calligrapher and a recognized butterfly collector. His favorite clothes were kimonos. The muses of Jacoulet and his day-dreaming scenarios set the color palette for the collection. There were garden roses, a joyous tropical life, Ukiyo-e and the idea of creating ‘pictures of the floating world’… a creation by a romantic woman, a poète who wanders between her inner world and le monde extérieur.
The collection is feminine and bohemian; it is a collision of the oriental and the occidental. Raffia brings a relaxed tone whilst tassels create a more elegant mood. We incorporated fringe with our signature ballooned sleeves. We are still in love with embroidery, experimenting with pleats and polished cotton. Our love affair is and always will be prints; garden roses for poetic, more dreamy days and polka dots for those long luxurious nights.
Do you have any future plans for the Middle East?
From Instagram, I see many of our JO woman are from the Middle East which I love. I would also love to visit someday and meet all those beautiful women. I don’t have any upcoming trips planned but hopefully will very soon.
Name three items you can’t live without?
Sunglasses, iPad and my pillow.
Complete the sentence: I’m happy when…
I spend time with my family; my three boys and my husband are my everything.
What do you do to relax and unwind?
Every morning I have ‘me’ time. I need time alone to reset, be grateful, meditate and be in silence. I also love being with my three boys and husband every evening, it keeps my heart smiling and that is the best medicine.
What really annoys you?
Unfairness.
If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?
Believe in yourself and have always compassion.
What is your most treasured possession?
My family. Always.
Who would you like to be stuck on a desert island with?
My husband, Cesar, and books.
Describe the view from your window today…
I’m looking at Paris, I’m staying here for a few days after the SS19 show at PFW. I love this view.
What’s your personal motto?
Treat others as you would want them to treat you.
For her third Chloé collection, Natacha Ramsay-Levi took inspiration from various parts of the world and unified them in that moment when you watch the sun go down over another blissful summer day.
The brand has long been associated with bohemia, freedom of movement and precisely crafted undone silhouettes. As guests rested their feet on multi-colour Persian carpets that hugged the runway, out came the first group of Chloé girls dressed in patchwork dresses with splashes of floral and wallpaper prints – many cinched at the waist with rope belts.
Then came the Coachella rock and roll tribe with tie dye T-shirts styled with fringed skirts and chunky sandals mixed with crochette dresses, fringed trousers and 70’s style waistcoats. There was beautiful fluidity in how the pieces moved with last eight looks standing out to us the most.
While the previous segments referenced hippy chic, the closing ensembles reminded us of modern day Greek goddesses in their pleated draped gowns and separates – a couple were decorated in multi-colour stones.
As with every Chloé show the accessories are as strong as the clothes, in some cases more so, and for SS19 Ramsay-Levi sent out a couple of new styles along with bulky sandals and bold jewellery – after all, there’s nothing that an oversized pair of earrings can dress up in a heartbeat.
Now, let’s go and chase those sunsets.
