What we saw as a great partnership between Raf Simons and Calvin Klein has come to a sudden end after less than two years.
Here at a&e, we loved the cinematic and edgy vibe that Simons added to the American multi-tiered, multi-billion-dollar brand as their first chief creative officer, but it looks like his vision didn’t connect with the core customer base that mainly shop denim and underwear, rather than high fashion.
Leaving eight months before his contract is due for renewal, Calvin Klein will not stage their usual show in February during New York Fashion Week. In a statement, PHV, the labels parent company, said:
“Both parties have amicably decided to part ways after Calvin Klein Inc. decided on a new brand direction which differs from Simons’s creative vision.”
Despite this sudden breakup, Simon’s can now focus more on his namesake label which he will still show in the new year.
Naomi Campbell has been revealed as the face of NARS Cosmetics, and the first image of the campaign showcases a perfect party look.
This is the first time that supermodel has been the face of a beauty campaign, despite being one of the most famous names in the industry. She will be the brand’s muse for the first half of 2019 starting with the Radiance Repowered range that will hit the shelves in January.
The first image was captured by the founder François Nars and while the make-up was crafted by James Kaliardos who most likely used the Skin Deep Eye Palette and the Super Radiant Booster from the upcoming line.
“Naomi is a living icon and brings such strong personality to the camera,” said Mr Nars via their Instagram account. “She and I are like family. I have known her since the very beginning of her career. From the start, I have admired her, her beauty, and her style.”
Now this is a beautiful way to kick off the new year.
We’ve been eagerly awaiting Daniel Lee’s debut at Bottega Veneta, and have a feeling that this collection might fill the Phoebe Philo shaped hole.
Lee’s has a long and rich history to work with. Bottega Veneta is known for fine Italian craftsmanship that offers contemporary luxury. Blending that heritage with what men and women want to wear should not be a problem for him having worked at Celine under Philo as well as Maison Margiela and Balenciaga.
There is some of the old Celine aesthetic in the Pre-Fall 19 line such as boxy silhouettes and a muted colour palette, but he it is very much in lined with the codes of the house, especially when you look at the treatment of leather and use of texture.
There is no rigidity, the softness of Bottega Veneta’s cabat bags applied to an entire collection. A sensuality is expressed throughout, coats tailored to a slender line, scarf-dresses draped against the figure. The notion of skin is a constant, either revealed through transparency or windows opened onto the body itself, or in a reiterated use of leather.
There is a synergy between men’s and women’s clothing. Menswear toys with the concept of sprezzatura, an unstudied, natural ease that also informs the womenswear. Both play with looser, louche proportions, with mixing the relaxed with the formal, evoking the reality of dressing today.
Materials are pure luxury: cashmere and silk, wools, cottons, shearlings and every permutation of leather. Colours are natural – cordovan, espresso, amber and oxblood, punctuated with heightened shades and contrasted with chalk and Milanese black.
Celebrating and exploring the intrecciato, methods of knotting, weaving, braiding are applied to a range of new handbags – box clutches and high-handled totes. They also feature in footwear, streamlined variations of classic men’s footwear, and for women sandals and pumps with a squared toe.
From what we’ve seen so far, we are very much excited for Lee’s runway debut in February.
Your festive diary is filled up with Christmas parties, work do’s, family occasions and even a winter wedding or two. With so many reasons to celebrate, staying on top of your beauty routine is key to making it through these hectic weeks while looking flawless.
If by party number 500 you had to invest in bottles of dry shampoo and reverting to in-the-car makeup touch ups, there is one feature you should pay close attention to, because if all fails, you eyebrows won’t.
Benefit’s Regional Brow Artist Menat El Abd shares a step by step video tutorial on how to achieve the perfect clean brow look during this busy month.
Amal Al Raisi’s SS19 collection draws inspiration from Al Baleed, a UNESCO world heritage site in Oman that used to serve as a trading hub between the West and the Far East.
Taking that theme in account, the designer merged the traditional craftsmanship of Oman and fused them with Western wearability. She created unique prints to outline the port’s historic story featuring shapes of the continents to enhance the nautical backdrop, while colours such as ‘spiced apple’ depict the desert and blend beautifully with various hues of green and feminine rose.
To illustrate the workings of this old port, Al Raisi worked with elements derived from different countries such as India, China and Persia. Long flowy kaftans and skirts made from soft fabrics blended with these symbolic elements portray the culture of Oman and its relationship with the rest of the world.
The desert rose, merchant scale and a Chinese coin from the Tang Dynasty area few of the elements that symbolizes her inspiration, while her intricate gold and green sequins on kaftans add a touch of luxury.
Al Raisi delivers another collection that once again strives to put Oman on a fashion map in an elegant and fresh way.
Now that your Christmas and New Years Eve plans are all set (hopefully) it’s time to look ahead to the first month of 2019.

We might be snuggling down for the festive holidays, but Kendall Jenner is making us dream of the summer festival season with her latest fashion campaign.
The model is channelling some serious Coachella vibes with a mix of strength and sensuality alongside the male model, Luka Issac, in the SS19 shoot for Roberto Cavalli by photography duo Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott.
The images’ warm tones and tactile feel exalt the richness of the Roberto Cavalli Spring/Summer 2019 collection designed by the brand’s Creative Director Paul Surridge. Prints, textures and precious ornaments appearing on both the impeccable tailored styles and the embroidered knitted designs stand out, putting the accent on the fashion house’s signature high-end craftsmanship. Cuts and silhouettes evoke a vibrant athleticism.
“We had the honor to work with a stellar team this season, perfectly interpreting the most authentic spirit of the brand,” said Surridge in a statement. “Mert & Marcus deeply captured the sensual and physical attitude of the collection, which was exalted by Kendall’s exuberant and powerful hyper feminine personality.”
The SS19 collection will be hitting the stores around February, ahead of Surridge’s runway show for the Italian luxury brand during the Milan Fashion Week schedule.
Co-CEO of Chalhoub Group, Anthony Chalhoub, has passed away ages 63 in Paris on December 17 following his battle with cancer.
He co-led the growth of the luxury market in the Middle East through the regions largest retail operator alongside his brother Patrick. Through their efforts, they brought leading brands to the country including Max Mara, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Max Mara and Fendi, to name a few. The statement from Chalhoub Group reads:
“It is with deep sadness that we are informing you that our beloved co-CEO Anthony Chalhoub passed away on the 17th of December in Paris at the age of 63, after courageously battling illness for the past years. It’s hard to express the heartfelt sorrow we are feeling right now. Anthony was an exceptional fearless leader, driven by his passion and determination. He joined the family venture 43 years ago and has been instrumental in the evolution and the development of the Group. With his humanitarian spirit, honesty, compassion, kindness and his sense of humour, Anthony touched so many hearts. Those who have been fortunate enough to know him have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Anthony leaves us with great memories and the dreams he kept alive. We will continue to live by his legacy and values.”
Our thoughts are with his family that include his wife, two children, brother and parents Michel and Widad.
The icon of the industry and hair pioneer Oribe Canales has passed away aged 62.
Cuban-American creative has worked with the likes of Meghan Markle, Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, Ashley Graham and Naomi Campbell as well as leading fashion brands such as a Chanel. His own brand Oribe became a cult favourite, with the Dry Texturizing Spray proving a sell out.
Oribe HQ in New York released a statement saying that they have not had an official confirmation from the family and added:
“Oribe was an amazing hairdresser and friend and will be missed. Out of respect for his partner, Zaki, and his family, we have no further comment at this time.”
The news was followed by floods of social media posts from celebrities including Miley Cyrus who wrote:
“Wish I could hug you, wish I could smell the familiar scent of when you walked in to a room. I’d do anything to tell you one more time how beautiful you make me feel… I love you Oribe and I always will.”
Nadine Labaki has been nominated for Best Foreign Language Film Oscar for her movie Capharnaum, marking the first time an Arab woman received a nod from such a prestigious awards ceremony.
There has been a lot of buzz about the Capharnaum , which means “chaos,” as it tells a moving story of children in the slums of Beirut and follows a 12-year-old boy who decides to sue his parents for the “crime” of giving him life. It received a standing ovation at Cannes, winning her the Jury Prize.
The film itself is difficult to watch, and yet extremely important as it shines a light on the poverty and hardship of the broken system, with many of scenes filmed with non-actors, reflecting the reality of what happens.
Labaki revealed in an interview that the script wasn’t fully written at the time of filming, instead it was pieced together through ongoing research and persistence. Telling this story clearly meant a lot to the filmmaker and her husband, who was the producer, as they re-mortgaged their own house to fund the rest of the movie.
“What an incredible moment in our film’s journey and a major milestone for Lebanese and Arab cinema. After years of research, tears and sweat, long production hours and sleepless nights, our film has been recognized on this year’s Foreign Language #Oscar shortlist among 8 other films from a selection that exceeded 80 submissions from all around the world. We couldn’t be prouder,” she wrote on her Instagram page.
She has also received a nomination for the Golden Globes’ Best Picture – Foreign Language, marking a first in the awards history as the only Lebanese film to be put forward for this category.
Win or not, Capharnaum has brought to light people who are ignored in a hope to give them a voice and encourage a change for the better.
For a snowy Christmas with plenty of cheer, good food, and Instagram-worthy decorations, Lebanon has a lot more to offer than you think.
Christmas Decoration
If you are trying to feel the Christmas spirit, you definitely have to visit Lebanon. The decoration are everywhere, the streets are full of lights, and the small shops on the side streets and malls are stocked with all kind of goodies. We advise you to visit Byblos, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, known for it’s amazing Christmas tree and decorations, and then head into Downtown Beirut.
“Snow Is Falling”
The lyrics of this song are the best to describe Christmas in Lebanon. If you miss the snow and your kids playing around, you must hit to the mountains where you and your family will enjoy making snow angels before tasting some delicious local food. Lebanon is known for its nature having the shore next to the mountains which you can visit both within an hour time. It can take a little longer during the festive season, but we promise it’s worth the effort.
Night Life
If you’re here for Christmas then you might as well stay for New Years Eve celebrations. As Beirut is known for its night life with a huge array of clubs, pubs and rooftops, you are guaranteed to find a venue to fit your taste. Save up your energy before heading out as people in Lebanon party until sunrise and then go for breakfast.
For the Love Of Food
There is a lot happening during the festive season. You can visit many Christmas markets all over the country to indulge in great food and amazing local drinks. Each city has it’s food specialities and is an experience in it’s own right. Le Marché des Délices au Liban, Christmas Festivities at Beirut Souks are a must.
Family And Friends
If you lived in Dubai long enough, then you would’ve made one or two Lebanese friends. The best experience during Christmas you can have is by heading to their family home and see all the traditions in action. Starting with the most delicious breakfast prepared by the mother (homemade Manakeesh), gathering with friends at the court of the church, visiting the elders of the village where they can happily interrogate you about your marital and family status. You’ll feel like part of the gang in no time.

Been dreaming of that J. Lo glow? You won’t have too long to wait as the star is branching out into the skincare industry.
At 49, Jennifer Lopez has one of the best complexions we’ve seen and we have been desperate to learn her secret. Now, ‘Jenny from the block’ is ready to reveal (almost) all with her very own beauty line.
All we know of her daily routine is that she drinks plenty of water, apart from that she has remained hush hush about the products that keeps her skin glowing. During the promotion of her newest film Second Act in New York, she said that she will be releasing her skincare line:
“I’ve been working on it for a long time because I don’t want to put [just] anything out.” She then added: ‘It’s going to be something that works. That’s what you can count on when my name is on something.”
She explained that it will bring together everything she learnt over the years and it won’t have anything to do with needles, so we can assume natural and effective ingredients in a bottle that will be landing in stores late next year.
We. Can’t. Wait.
In Dubai we are positively spoilt for choice when it comes to fine dining, and now there’s another dazzling venue for a special occasion.
Internationally acclaimed chef and creator, Alain Ducasse, has unveiled his first restaurant in the region: miX Dubai – a space spread over three floors, with unparalleled views of the sea and Palm Jumeirah, located in the Emerald Palace Kempinski.
Conceived as a contemporary interpretation of Islamic mocarabes, a flowing ceiling of transparent acrylic tubes sweeps across this 500sqm dining room in a single fluid gesture, while a golden Fabergé Egg sits inside the dome.
If that didn’t sound fancy enough, the listen up. The venue offers one of the most exclusive Chef’s Table in town. Hidden from view, it is only accessible through a private elevator with dedicated kitchen, terrace and a central table for 12 guests – now that’s a wow factor.
For the rest of space, a lot of thought went into creating a luxurious environment. From the intimate 44-cover miX Bar and Lounge, to the 70-cover miX+ area that offers an intimate dining experience with its unique location, private bar and unique vantage point overlooking the Dubai skyline.
Personally, we will be hanging out on one of the multiple miX terraces that boast awe-inspiring, 360 views of Dubai, with the sunset one side and skyline of the Palm Jumeirah on the other. The vast miX restaurant terrace, seating 100 guests is visually arresting, with sculptural golden shapes, with a curated mix of high top and low seating, as well as a shisha menu.
Heading the kitchen is Chef de Cuisine Hugues Gerard. Hugues was raised under Ducasse’s teachings and will be heading up the team alongside Pastry Chef, Douglas Oberson who has a wealth of experience in French cuisine. Expect a well-rounded menu that will change according to the season.
Men’s jewellery. Some like it, others don’t, but one thing for sure is that it received some serious love on the runways and red carpet, and we found a stylish and subtle way to bring it into your wardrobe.
If necklaces and rings aren’t to your taste, then consider a bracelet. Not only does it come in a wide variety of finishes – beaded, leather, thread, metal etc – its a understated yet cool way to inject some personality that could even work in a corporate environment.
Once you build your taste and confidence, they’re super easy to mix and match, and layer making them perfect companions for your wrist.
Style on their own or alongside your watch of choice and dress any way you please. Bracelets are like ornaments, they enhance rather than overwhelm an outfit making them an ideal starting point of your jewellery collection.
Those London bound for the holidays are in luck as the Mandarin Oriental Hotel near Hyde Park is ready to showcase some of their newly renovated spaces.
Positioned near Harrods, in the hub of Knightsbridge, the hotel is in the perfect spot to dose up on the festive cheer, especially if you’re heading to Winter Wonderland.
Once you’re done exploring and shopping, step into the newly designed lobby featuring glass chandelier in the shape of a closed flower bud and artwork by Fredrikson Stallard. Then, tuck into the reshuffled menu at the Bar Boulud under the eye of an English born executive chef John Barber. His menu will feature dishes with a British contemporary twist on French classics. A Christmas and New Year menu will also be available.
Award winning Dinner by Heston Blumenthal will reopen with Chef Ashley Palmer-Watts at the helm showcasing a new selection of dishes. The restaurant’s iconic meat fruit will make a comeback, featuring a festive twist with a plum jelly rather than the traditional mandarin jelly.
The Rosebery will unveil its festive afternoon tea and welcome this year’s Harrods Christmas Bear, Oliver, for all young fans of Mandarin Oriental to enjoy this holiday season. Executive Pastry Chef Paul Thieblemont and his talented team have created homemade sweet treats such as Honey Tree Madeleines and Santa’s Lollipop for the occasion.
Have you been good this year? Then go ahead and treat yourself.
Miss Universe came to a triumphant finale for Catriona Gray from the Philippines as she claimed the 2018 crown.

Designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy brought their brand back to New York Fashion Week last season after time away in Paris, where they were part of the Couture line up. In the new year, they won’t be venturing too far from home and will showcase their latest pieces in Los Angeles.
“California is one of our most important influences and having our first show in Los Angeles is a dream we’ve long wished to make reality,” said Mulleavy in a statement.
Date and location are still to be confirmed.
To round off 2018, a number of prominent names from the world of fashion have made it on the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List that celebrates the achievements and service of people across the UK and The Commonwealth.
Sixties model Twiggy, Christopher Bailey and Daphne Selfe will be recognised by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace over the next few months for their contribution to arts and fashion.
Twiggy – born Lesley Hornby – will be named Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for her services to fashion, arts and charity. In a statement she said:
“I’m a very proud Brit, I feel I’m an ambassador for Britain, I always have. My only sadness with this is my mum and dad aren’t here to know. They’d have been so proud.”
This will be a second honour for Bailey, the former president and chief creative officer of Burberry, as in 2009 he was awarded MBE (Master of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire). This time, his work for the iconic British brand up to his departure in March this year, will add a CBE (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) to his royal accolades.
Finally, British Empire Medal will be awarded to Britain’s oldest working model Daphne Selfe, for her services to women and fashion. At 90-years-old, she is still winning major campaigns like beauty brand Eyeko.
Over 1000 Brits have been named on The Queen’s New Year’s Honours List which also includes the writer of the Handmaid’s Tale Margaret Atwood who will receive Companions of Honour for services to literature, and actor Thandie Newton who most recently appeared in TV series Westworld and will be awarded with OBE for services to film and charity.
There is something sacred about the getting ready ritual, which you will be doing a lot of during this festive period.
Whether you prefer getting ready with friends, take 10 minutes in a bathroom or head to the nearest salon for head to toe transformation, there’s a lot to be said for a party-ready routine that keeps you feeling and looking good all night long.
To celebrate this ‘me time’ before a night out, and to mark the launch a capsule collection, online e-tailer matchesfashion.com has joined forces with shoe brand Midnight 00. Designed with the events season in mind, the range of eight different styles features lamé fabrics in a variety of bold colours, embellished with the PVC casings that the brand has become known for.
The founder of the brand consultant Ada Kokosar approached four of her tastemaker friends from across the globe to shoot styles from the collection and talk through their favourite designers for party dressing and their pre-party routines.
Ada Kokosar – stylist, creative consultant and founder of Midnight 00.
‘‘I start with the shoes when creating a party look. I think it’s the most important element as it gives you the attitude, which is why I created party and bubbles-proof shoes. I used to dress according to my mood, but then I realised how much a look can actually change your frame of mind. I tend to play around with a lot of different styles, depending on the occasion and the environment, and usually look to labels like Halpern, Preen by Thornton Bregazzi and Hillier Bartley. I love to get ready with a group of my best girlfriends at my place.”
Giorgia Tordin – Co-Founder And Creative Director Of Attico.
‘‘If I am going out I always choose the most extravagant and fun pieces in my closet. Sequins, velvet, feathers, sparkly accessories and high heels are what I need to start the night right. My Attico dresses always put me in a good mood, so I usually wear one of them when I want something playful and sexy. If I had to pick the perfect party shoes, I’d definitely go for a pair by Midnight 00s – they make you feel like a princess, and you can dance all night in them. Music is always with me while I get ready. I can jump from my ‘oldies’ playlist of Chic, Diana Ross and Bryan Ferry to hip-hop from Drake, The Weeknd and Frank Ocean. It just depends on my mood.’’
Linda Tol – Amsterdam-Based Stylist And Trend Predictor.
‘‘When it comes to dressing for going out, I like anything inspired by Studio 54 – fabrics such as sequins and velvets. I love to wear my crystal-embellished oversized earrings by Alessandra Rich with jeans, a black tuxedo blazer and a pair of killer heels. Another favourite is my Attico sequin dress, worn with classic black open-toe sandals. For me, heels have to be comfortable, sexy, super elegant and outstanding. I listen to Drake, Kanye West, Beyoncé and Frank Ocean to get me in the mood while I’m getting ready, and sip Champagne.’’
Tamu Mcpherson – Editor Of Tamu Mcpherson, Now Lives In Milan.
‘‘Before I start getting ready, I like to use lavender or rose quartz-infused oils after my shower – they are both so relaxing and soothing. When it comes to choosing what to wear, I am either really into a look at the moment, or I open my closet and go for the piece that calls out to me the most. For party pieces, I lean towards labels such as Attico, Jacquemus and Ellery. As for shoes, I always look out for a great silhouette, an attractive fabrication and a gorgeous heel – it’s a plus when they’re adorned in some way. I tend to get ready alone, but listening to Prince always gets me in the party mood.’’
Bettina Looney – Stylist And Tastemaker Based In London.
‘‘My getting-ready ritual usually starts 10 minutes before I need to leave the house or office, and ends up with me doing my make-up in the car. On the off occasion there’s time for it, I like to throw in a relaxing bath to unwind before I go out. What I wear depends on the occasion – I like to mix and match pieces by designers like Alessandra Rich, Ellery and Isa Arfen until a look comes together. I tend to choose shoes to complement my outfit. I am really loving what Midnight 00 has done, making a modern Cinderella slipper that can be worn from day to night, dressed up or dressed down. It’s fun and something different, which is always a game changer for me.’’

Heading home for the holidays? You’re not the only one with this weekend expected to be the busiest for the Dubai airport.
According to reports, over 100,000 flyers expected to pass through Emirates terminal in just one weekend which means you packing and timing skills need to impeccable to make your scheduled departure.
On The Clock
During this peak time, get to the airport three hours before you’re due to take off giving you enough time to go through check in and customs. Make sure to also check the roads as multiple events around the city can delay you.
Beauty Of Online
Save yourself time and check in online. In most cases that can be done at least six hours before departure.
Get On The Scales
Nobody wants to be opening their suitcase on the floor at check in if the bag is over the weight limit. Weight your bags at home, try and minimise on toiletries at tech that tend to tips the scales over the edge – we are sure your mum has shampoo at home.
All In Hand
Next up is hand luggage. A lot of the delay happens at security so think in advance and divide or omit any liquids, have your laptop and other electronics in easy reach and avoid anything in your pockets – or just have everything in your jacket pocket that could bleep as you’ll have to remove it anyway.
Watch The Board
Once you’re in Duty Free, check how long it will take you to get to your departure gate and then you can stock up on snacks and last minute Christmas presents.
Happy travels!
What is a shirt if not an essential part of anyone’s wardrobe, especially when it comes to polished and modern office wear.
Here at a&e magazine, we are always on a lookout for a designer that offers a new twist on a staple, and the Dubai-born designer Marina Qureshi might have something special to offer with her SS19 collection that fuses contemporary silhouettes that are enhanced with intricate detailing and cleaver use of fabric.
Marina explores relaxed and elegant ways of constructing shirting, infused with her signature polished finish. Blurring the lines between daywear and eveningwear, the collection exudes sophisticated charm.
A graduate of Esmod University, she went on to study Business in Fashion at Central Saint Martins in London, and during this time she worked under Alexander McQueen and Masha Ma giving her invaluable experience and skills to work on a debut line of her own.
For summer, expect fresh colours of lilac, powder pink and chartreuse that offset the deep emerald, gold, black with a splash of white and tan. Structured fabrics in cotton and metallic mix jacquard juxtapose lightweight silk and crepe, while gold lame adds a bold edge.
Choose from off the shoulder tops, shirt dresses, wide leg pants, midi skirts and kaftans to fill up your new season wardrobe. She focuses a lot on texture and details, like ruffles on sleeves, feathered butterflies embroidered on lace, and shimmering white sequins on gowns.
With an A-list fan base including model Lara Stone, singer Ellie Goulding, actress Amanda Seyfried and musician Florence Welch, Marina Qureshi is definitely the one to watch in the new year.
There are plenty of reasons to visit Dubai, but there is one particular landmark that has the most hits.
Over the last 11 months, taxi app Uber has gathered information on a number of rides taken to some of the most iconic spots around the world, and the Burj Khalifa (aka the tallest building in the world) has come in sixth place.
Standing alongside the biggest mall in the world, the half residence half Armani hotel tower is over 828 metres in height, has the highest outdoor observation deck in the world and, to top it all off, the lift has longest travel distance in the world.
In the ratings, the Burj Khalifa beat the Buckingham Palace seventh, Disneyland in California in eighth with the ninth spot going to The Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco and Sydney Opera House finishing in 10th.
Empire state building in New York was crowned the winner followed by Freedom Tower, also located in the Big Apple. The third spot went to CN Tower in Toronto, with fourth taken by Arc de Triomphe in Paris, with the Eiffel Tower following in fifth.
January is going to be a big month for men’s fashion, and brands who want to further expand into this growing market will be making the best of it.
The last few seasons has seen a number of designers presenting co-ed collections in order to unify the voice of their house, however many are now realising the full-potential of the male segment and have decided to debut or come back to Men’s Fashion Week FW19 in the new year.
Givenchy and Celine are already on the bill and recently Olivier Rousteing announced that Balmain will be showing for the first time. Now we’ve learnt that British designer Jonathan Anderson will be taking his innovative cult brand J.W Anderson to the Paris shows.
To keep him busy, he will also be presenting for the first time Loewe men in the French capital alongside other key brands like Louis Vuitton and Dior.
Oscar De La Renta continues to explore the idea of travel for the Pre-Fall 2019 collection, taking inspiration from colours and shapes.
Since taking over at the brand, designers Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia have injected modernity and boldness to the collections, and here they have explored traditional Indian menswear shapes, showing skirt-pant combos in lightweight printed silks under Western blazers.
It is definitely a new look for Oscar de la Renta, but one that the designers feel that the house founder would’ve embraced. “Oscar believed in eclecticism in clothes, and so do we,” said Garcia. “We’re not American; we travel a lot for work. It feels natural and instinctual to us to do pieces that feel travelled.”
That sensibility extended into their eveningwear offering, where sheer tulle dresses were decorated with metallic gold threading or multicolour floral embellishments, and draped, bias-cut unconstructed numbers came in many iterations. Amid all that softness, an emerald green one-shoulder nipped-and-tucked taffeta party dress evoking the gussied-up glory days of New York in the 1980s looked freshest.
Detailing, embroidery and feathers are present, but there’s a freshness and wearability to them. The fluid and undone silhouettes feel relaxed and yet well put together, take the burgundy shirt and trousers with contrast white stitching for example.
This collection is definitely worth an adventure or two.
