The Must Visit Exhibitions Throughout Summer 2024

These are the must-visit galleries over the coming months around the world.

The worlds of art and fashion often go hand in hand. Whether it’s some of the leading fashion houses championing the work of unique artists around the globe – such as the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, and the Fondazione Prada in Milan – or leading art houses presenting the work of artistic directors from the great fashion houses. Below we explore some of the best exhibitions which celebrate the creative minds behind some of the biggest names in fashion this summer.

From the Heart to the Hands: Dolce&Gabbana, Palazzo Reale, Milan

This summer Palazzo Reale in Milan invites you on a tour to explore the genius behind the house of Dolce&Gabbana. The “From the Heart to the Hands” exhibition explores the designs of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana over the house’s nearly 40-year history. The exhibition offers an immersive exploration curated by Florence Müller through unique collections by the house. On display are one-off pieces from D&G’s Alta Moda, Alta Sartoria and Alta Gioielleria collections amongst other exquisite pieces. The exhibition offers the opportunity to discover the muses, experiences and creative works that have sparked the designers’ inspiration over the years. The works on display also offer the opportunity to see the craftsmanship and savoir-faire that goes into the creations at the iconic Italian house. According to the house, the new exhibit is “a declaration of love to Italian culture…from the heart, where ideas are born, to the hands, the means through which they take shape.” The exhibit at Milan’s Palazzo Reale also includes many immersive installations and specially commissioned digital artworks which place multiple creative languages in dialogue with the brand’s unique creations, building a journey through the different facets of D&G’s style, from visual arts to architecture, from music to Italian traditions and from theatre to the Dolce Vita.

Viktor&Rolf. Fashion Statements, Kunsthalle München, Munich

In the first major display of the work by Viktor&Rolf, this exhibition in Munich explores the creative inspiration, unique designs and maverick journey through the fashion industry that the house has gone on. For more than three decades, Dutch fashion artists Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren have been exploring with breathtaking virtuosity the boundaries between the worlds of haute couture and art. The self-confessed fashion-world outsiders have gained critical acclaim for their unconventional approach to design, technical perfection, and deep knowledge of fashion and art history. Their creations have been embraced by artists such as Madonna, Tilda Swinton, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Doja Cat, and Cardi B and were staged in numerous ballets, as well as in an opera directed by Robert Wilson. The exhibition features some of Viktor&Rolf’s most extraordinary and avant-garde works. Reflecting the duo’s passions, obsessions and singular vision, the exceptional presentation will showcase 100 of their most daring creations – many exhibited for the first time – from the designers’ own archive as well as important private collections.“We are thrilled to show a selection of more than 30 years of our work at the Kunsthalle München” say Viktor&Rolf. “We have always felt strongly about the way museum shows complement our seasonal catwalk presentations. Exhibitions are more democratic than the runway: they allow more visitors, and they last longer. They can show that certain themes recur over the years and put a spotlight onto the sublime craftsmanship that goes into the creation of our pieces.”

The exhibition runs until the 6th of October; kunsthalle-muc.de

Icons of British Fashion, Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire

Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

Throughout the summer months, New York’s leading gallery, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is showcasing one of the must-visit exhibits of 2024:  ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion’. The exhibition features 220 garments and accessories that are connected visually through nature, which also serves as a metaphor for the transience of fashion. The show aims to bring to life the sensory capacities of these masterworks through a wide range of encounters: visitors are invited to smell the aromatic histories of hats bearing floral motifs; touch the walls of galleries that are embossed with the embroidery of select garments; and experience – via the illusion technique known as Pepper’s ghost – how the “hobble skirt” restricted women’s stride in the early 20th century. Punctuating the galleries are a series of “sleeping beauties” – garments that can no longer be dressed on mannequins due to their extreme fragility. Discussing the unique new exhibit, Max Hollein, the Museum’s Marina Kellen French Director and Chief Executive Officer, said: “The Met’s innovative spring 2024 Costume Institute exhibition pushes the boundaries of our imagination and invites us to experience the multisensory facets of a garment – those facets that deteriorate and become lost after entering a museum collection as an object. Sleeping Beauties heightens our engagement with these masterpieces of fashion by evoking what it was like to feel, move, hear, smell, and interact with them when they could be worn, ultimately offering a deeper appreciation of the integrity, beauty, and artistic brilliance of the works on display.”

The exhibition runs until the 2nd of September; metmuseum.org

Dani Afiouni Founder And CEO of Longevity Wellness On His Vision For A Healthier Future

Dani Afiouni, the Founder & CEO of Longevity Wellness in Dubai is one of the most accomplished endurance athletes of his generation.

He has traversed some of the most challenging landscapes on the planet, from completing a marathon across the North Pole in extreme – 40 degree Celsius temperatures to racing across the worlds highest summit, Mount Everest, where he also completed a marathon. Hes no stranger to extreme sports having several challenges as a Triathlete and Skydiver under his belt too. His experience in the endurance field has also inspired his work. In 2019 the entrepreneur set up Longevity Wellness Dubai, to help everyone from athletes to those simply looking to improve their day-to-day health. Since the hub first opened five years ago, it has gone from strength to strength, under the mission of empowering individuals to Age Well and Live Better.” We sat down with Afiouni off the back of his recent 153km desert marathon – which he ran to celebrate the hubs fifth anniversary and to raise money for the Emirates Society of Child Mental Health – to learn more.

What was your inspiration for setting up Longevity Wellness?

The inspiration for setting up Longevity Wellness came from a combination of my personal experiences as an adventurer and my passion for creating and innovating on the means, tech and talent for people to spend time in good health. Over the past 15 years, I have spent a significant amount of time climbing summits around the world and exploring some of the most extreme environments, such as the Arctic regions and the summit of Antarctica. These adventures required not only physical strength but also mental resilience and a comprehensive approach to wellness. One particularly dramatic expedition to Antarctica in 2018 was a turning point for me. I encountered extremely harsh conditions, and it was my rigorous training and holistic approach to health that enabled me to overcome these challenges. This experience reinforced my belief in the importance of a well-rounded approach to wellness that includes physical fitness, mental clarity, and emotional balance. Upon returning from Antarctica, I felt a strong desire to share the methods and protocols that had helped me thrive in such extreme conditions. I realized that the principles I had developed during my expeditions could benefit others in their pursuit of health and wellness and this is what led to the creation of Longevity Hub.

You have completed many great marathons around the world. Which challenge – out of the races and sports you have participated in – are you most proud of?

Every expedition has its own set of rewards, and pride comes from combining hard work, discipline, and the strength to overcome hardships until you reach the summit or the finish line. Reflecting on these experiences is a constant source of motivation. Out of the many challenges I’ve undertaken, there are four that stand out equally in my mind: The 777 Challenge: This involved running 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 days. Travelling the world in 10 days and running a marathon on each continent every day was a gruelling yet exhilarating experience that tested my endurance and resilience. The North Pole Marathon: Running the last point on earth, on the Arctic Ocean, at temperatures reaching -40 Celsius was an unforgettable and extreme challenge. It is the coldest marathon on Earth and requires immense mental and physical fortitude. The Jungle Ultra: This 205 KM self-supported survival race in the middle of the Amazon jungle was one of the toughest endurance events I’ve participated in. Navigating through the dense jungle terrain while carrying all the necessary supplies pushed me to my limits. The Everest Marathon: Running the highest marathon on earth was a unique and incredibly demanding experience. The altitude and harsh conditions made it a true test of my physical and mental capabilities. Each of these challenges taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, resilience, and the importance of holistic wellness in achieving peak performance. They are all equally significant to me and have shaped my approach to both my personal adventures and my work at Longevity Wellness Hub.

What does an average morning routine look like to you?

My morning routine is designed to set a strong foundation for the day, both physically and mentally. I start by standing on a nail board for 10 minutes. This practice helps to stimulate circulation and energize my body. Following that, I take a cold shower, which invigorates me and sharpens my focus. After these initial steps, I move on to my physical training. Depending on the day, this could involve running a specific distance or following a tailored workout routine. During my runs, I use the time to structure, build, and innovate on our business model at Longevity Wellness Hub. This combination of physical activity and mental strategizing allows me to stay fit while continuously driving our business forward. This routine not only prepares me for the physical demands of the day but also ensures that I am mentally prepared to tackle challenges and make the most of every opportunity.

What has been your best marathon time (and where) so far, and what inspires you to keep going?

What inspires me most about marathons and expeditions is the long-term impact they have on me. Each one has humbled me, given me perspective, and allowed ample time for reflection. These experiences shape my approach to both life and business, constantly pushing me to grow and innovate. In terms of performance, my best marathon time was a sub-4-hour marathon. However, I rarely focused on timing or aiming for a personal best. Many of my marathons came after completing multiple marathons or Ironman events, so my primary goal was often to embrace the journey and the challenges it presented rather than to achieve a specific time. What keeps me going is the profound sense of accomplishment and the personal growth that comes from these experiences. Every marathon and expedition teaches me something new about resilience, endurance, and the power of the human spirit. These lessons are invaluable, and they continue to inspire me to take on new challenges and push my limits.

Congratulations on the challenging 153 km desert run which you recently completed. Which of the services at the clinic will you be utilizing in your recovery?

Thank you so much! Completing the 153 km desert run was an incredibly challenging yet rewarding experience. Throughout the run, I was fortunate to have the Longevity Wellness mobile unit on hand for rapid recovery through ice baths and compression therapy, which were crucial in managing the physical demands and keeping me going. It was partly an experiment for me as I was testing the tech we mobilize while live during an expedition which was never possible as all my expeditions were abroad. Applying Cold water immersion, pure oxygen therapy and compression modalities every day during the endurance challenge was truly a game changer for me, it made a difference and kept my serotonin high, inflammations low, and stress levels lower.  Now that the run is complete, my recovery will focus on key services at Longevity Wellness. I will continue with Cold Water Immersion Ice Baths to reduce inflammation and muscle soreness, and Compression Lymphatic Drainage Therapy to enhance circulation and reduce swelling. Additionally, I’ll incorporate Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy to promote faster healing and Sound and Light Frequency Therapy to manage stress and promote relaxation. By leveraging these advanced recovery services, I can ensure a holistic and effective recovery, allowing me to bounce back stronger and ready for my next adventure.

How can the treatments you offer at Longevity Wellness contribute to athletic performance?

At Longevity Wellness, our treatments are designed to enhance athletic performance by addressing both the physical and mental aspects of an athlete’s well-being. By combining advanced technologies with holistic health practices, we provide comprehensive support that helps athletes reach their true potential. At the heart of the offering is a scan to discover what the body lacks in terms of nutrition and supplements as well as an overview of inflammations, stress and energy fields, then our nutrition, supplements, and relevant therapies program begins. One of our key offerings is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. This treatment increases the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream, which accelerates muscle recovery, reduces inflammation, and enhances overall endurance. Athletes who undergo hyperbaric oxygen therapy often experience faster healing times and improved performance due to the increased oxygen availability in their tissues. Cold Water Immersion Ice Baths are another crucial component of our services. Ice baths help to reduce muscle soreness and inflammation after intense physical activity. They promote faster recovery and allow athletes to train more effectively by minimizing downtime between sessions. Our Compression Lymphatic Drainage Therapy is also highly beneficial for athletes. This treatment improves circulation and helps to remove metabolic waste from the muscles. By enhancing lymphatic flow, compression therapy reduces muscle fatigue and soreness, leading to better performance and quicker recovery times. Additionally, we offer Red Light Therapy, which has been shown to improve cellular function and repair. This therapy can enhance muscle recovery, reduce joint pain, and increase overall energy levels, making it an excellent tool for athletes looking to optimize their performance. Finally, Sound and Light Frequency Therapy can significantly impact an athlete’s mental performance by reducing stress and promoting relaxation. Mental resilience is just as important as physical strength, and this therapy helps athletes maintain focus and composure under pressure.

Do you have any exciting plans for Longevity Wellness that people can look forward to in 2024-2025?

We have committed ourselves to providing the space, the tech and the talent to help people take charge of their own wellbeing and we are fully invested in doing so. Further to the multiple locations 2024 will showcase for Longevity, we will launch our tech, analytics and scanning technology to provide people with actionable intelligence about their health and well-being to act on. So, Absolutely! We are very excited about the future of Longevity Wellness. In 2024-2025, we will be expanding our facilities into key areas across Dubai. This expansion will allow us to bring our unique blend of advanced wellness technologies and holistic health practices to more people, making it easier for individuals to access our services and take control of their well-being. We have carefully selected locations that will best serve our growing community, and each new facility will be equipped with the same state-of-the-art treatments and personalized wellness programs that our clients have come to rely on. Our goal is to create accessible wellness hubs that provide comprehensive support for physical, mental, and emotional health.

The season of summer takeovers has arrived. Leading the way is a new collaboration between Four Seasons and Jacquemus.

The French luxury house will be taking over The Ocean Club at Four Seasons Resort in the Bahamas.  Jacquemus has designed fabrics for loungers, accent pillows, sunshades and pool toys that are printed with a hand-painted stripe pattern in combinations of different colours.

The Jacquemus Collection Arrives In Dubai Fresh From The House’s Capri Show

European summer has arrived with the Jacquemus “La Casa” show on the Italian island of Capri.

The 15th anniversary collection explored minimalist geometries, classical Greek draping and fresh silhouettes.

According to the house, the show marked a “full-circle moment” for founder and creative director Simon Porte Jacquemus, whose imagination was captivated by  Casa Malaparte on the island when he launched his brand 15 years ago.

Throughout the collection, references to Curzio Malaparte’s home and Godard’s Le Mépris subtly connect the collection to its setting – from the floor tiles as an artistic motif to the intense Capri blue, expressive red, shades of yellow and bright sage that animate the monochromatic scheme.

For womenswear, the pieces speak from all sides with jersey cascading, peeling back, curving low down the sides of the body or revealing through sheer mousseline like a layer of water. Constructed jackets are self-contained statements with angled portrait collars and precise panelling. Those in bonded suede have edges painted and hand-finished. The flounced brim of a sun hat is transposed to the torso while exaggerated A-line skirts and a contoured, flowing bustier dress highlight different ways to frame the figure.

Meanwhile, the men’s pieces in the collection are chic yet playful polish. Suits appear with graphic zebra stripes, while ensembles are given curving outlines and defined waists. Other familiar pieces are reconsidered: scooping tanks, looser pants, front-peat shorts, airy boatnecks and trousers in crisp, dark denim, and marinière polos – sharply designed yet exuding ease.

Making its debut, “La Spiaggia”, a hand-crafted, rond-carré bag birthed from the beach: square with a round opening; round with a square opening. Also “Le Bombola”, a bucket bag whose angular shape resembles the architecture. Whether in leopard jacquard or smooth, sand-toned leather, it is punctuated with a large, sculpted magnetic ring. Stacked ballerinas, square-toed espadrilles and moccasins extend the silhouettes through revisited bourgeois archetypes. The essence of summer, caps, hats and more boast Capri branding.

The collection is now available on jacquemus.ae and in the Jacquemus boutique in Dubai Mall.

Miu Miu Looks At The Historic Role Of Women Through The House’s Summer Reads Project

Miu Miu launched several pop-ups around the globe this weekend, dedicated to the house’s Summer Reads project.

The series saw the launch of multiple customised “Miu Miu newsstands” in several key cities.

Each visitor to the new Miu Miu stand was gifted two out of three classic texts:  Alba de Céspedes Forbidden Notebook, Sibilla Aleramo’s A Woman and Jane Austen’s Persuasion.

Each of the texts chosen for the project focused on the role of women in different epochs. Cities chosen for the project included Milan, Paris, London, New York, Seoul, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Shanghai.

In the notes which accompanied the launch, the house said “Situated in different places and at disparate moments in history, each text was selected for its author’s brave and powerfully influential status as female creator. All their work, continually reappraised, explores concerns and ideologies that remain relevant to this day. Their voices are unique, a reflection on the lives of extraordinary women – lives as daughters, lovers, wives, and mothers – as expressed through the written word. Breaking with convention and the boundaries of gender, they are united as an inspiration to every generation of women that comes after them.”

Chemena Kamali Presents An Ode To Karl Lagerfeld For Chloé’s Spring 2025 Colleciton

Creative director Chemena Kamali has revealed the Chloé Spring 2025 collection, with an explosion of 1970s nostalgia and boho-chic summer pieces.

Discussing the collection in the notes which accompanied the collection Kamali explains that in particular, she was inspired by the late Karl Lagerfeld, who spent several decades with the house, from 1963 to 1983 and again from 1992 to 1997.

“Karl’s 1970s apartment on Place Saint-Sulpice – an Art Deco-inflected masterpiece featured in countless editorials with its signature black, gold and cream colour palette – triggered the creative path this season. That place was the hub of so many creative projects, as everything with Karl. Photographers such as Helmut Newton, Deborah Tuberville, Guy Bourdin and David Bailey shoot memorable images there, while Karl’s previous apartment in Saint-Germain- des-Prés, where he started his interest in Art Deco, was where Andy Warhol and Paul Morrissey filmed a movie called “L’Amour” in September 1970,” says Kamali.

The designer describes her latest collection for the house as “relatable rather than escapist,” but that doesn’t make it any less desirable.

The collection moves along two parallel lines: rich and airy, billowing dresses and blouses in black and gold or white and gold fil coupé evolve seamlessly from the last show, exploring Art Deco motifs and colour combinations.

Elsewhere, core Chloé include jackets with scalloped edges, leather coats, and Bermudas, together with denim pants and ribbed knit tops.

The colour palette includes shades of highly saturated tones of magenta, fuchsia, and purple, alongside the house’s signature shades of beige, cream and black.

Experience Matrimonial Bliss With Buccellati’s Romanza Collection

Buccellati is shining a spotlight on its expanded ‘Romanza’ collection this month.

The pieces within the collection were each crafted using traditional Italian goldsmith techniques which date back to the Renaissance Era. Moreover, every piece within the collection is uniquely crafted through bespoke engraving techniques.

Adding to the romance of the collection, each style is also inspired by a muse from European literature.

Those inspirational characters include Ginevra loved by Lancelot, Antiope from The Queen of the Amazons, Beatrice from Dante Alighieri, Carlotta from Elective Affinities, Titania from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Bradamante from Lodovico Ariosto. Then there is Penelope, a mythological symbol of unwavering fidelity; Lavinia, betrothed in the Aeneid; Juliet, who loves her Romeo, and Isotta, tormented by her feelings for Tristan.

The wedding-inspired collection includes rings designed expressly for the big day, with the lightness and magic of the tulle technique, with hand engravings which are typical of Buccellati’s style, with diamonds that illuminate a promise.

They are all rings with precious workmanship, so ornate yet so unexpectedly simple and pure in their style that they immediately attract admiration

Beyond, the wedding bands, the collection also features other unique pieces including the Antiope earrings, bracelet and pendant. Elsewhere, the Carlotta design has evolved into a series of complementary objects, such as necklaces, earrings, pendants and bracelets.

Among the latter are the tennis bracelet, embellished with diamonds alternating with hand-engraved elements, and the flexible bracelets, which feature one to three decorative elements set with diamonds. These are bracelets with very precious workmanship, yet so unexpectedly simple and pure that they immediately attract our admiration.

There is also a ‘mini’ version of the “Carlotta” pattern with a minimalist design compared to the original proposal, for a more accommodating and day-to-day wearability.

Still playing with white gold and diamonds, the flexible bracelets feature one to three decorative elements, the tennis bracelet becomes more linear and thin, and the pendant recreates a precious design that does not go unnoticed.

To complete the collection there are exquisite men’s cufflinks in the Carlotta and Antiope design versions. Ensuring every part of the wedding is dedicated to matrimonial bliss.

La DoubleJ And Orlebar Brown Announce Summer Collab Collection

Milanese and British style have been brought together with a new collaboration between luxury houses La DoubleJ and  Orlebar Brown.

Explaining the new collaboration, the notes which accompanied the announcement said “ After reconnecting at a mutual friend’s weekend party in the English countryside, La DoubleJ founder, J.J. Martin and Orlebar Brown founder, Adam Brown fused their collective brainpower to dream up a deluxe new spin on destination dressing.”

The result is the “Raise Your Vacation Vibration” collaboration, a high summer capsule comprised of 34 effortlessly elegant swimwear and ready-to-wear styles designed for all, arriving in three dazzling prints in a bold red, white and blue palette. Blending La DoubleJ’s power-printed, Italian feminine ebullience with Orlebar Brown’s sophisticated, masculine silhouettes, each piece in the line is designed to elevate your holiday state.

Discussing the new collection, J.J. Martin said: “This collection is really a true founder-to-founder brainchild. OB was looking to add a little more pizazz to their prints while we at LDJ were looking to absorb some of that “off-duty” elegance that they’re so well-known for. Although they might seem traditionally like “men’s” and “women’s” collection forged into one, all the pieces are really genderless, meant to be borrowed from your partner or your BFF’s closet while on holiday together. This is a true marriage of energies and aesthetics.”

Each of the three exclusive prints in this collection is designed by La DoubleJ and was inspired by deific energies to create a mood-boosting visual harmony between positive feminine and masculine characteristics: “Dragonflower”, a re-imagining of an iconic LDJ print, symbolizing the harmonious blend of strength and beauty; “Morpheus”, a romantic ode to the god of dreams; and “Whitsun” a beautiful botanical inspired by the king of flowers, used symbols of compassion and healing, immortality.

The founder of  Orelbar Brown, Adam Brown added: “I fell in love with La Double J when I met J.J. Martin a few years ago. Her aesthetic is infectiously upbeat and vibrant – the ultimate manifestation of our mantra ‘Feel Summer’. This collection is a superb fusion of both brands, taking them into new worlds. Without rules. Without constraint. With love and a sense of joy.”

The La Double J x Orlebar Brown capsule is available now via LaDoubleJ.com and OrlebarBrown.com, and in the La DoubleJ Milan and Taormina stores and Portofino Pop-up Shop, as well as in select Orlebar Brown stores across UK, USA, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Greece, UAE and Australia. Select retailers worldwide, including Net-a-Porter and Mr. Porter, will also carry the collection.

Dior Champions French-Scottish Accords For Cruise 2025

For Maria Grazia Chiuri’s Dior Cruise 2025 collection, she took the house to the rolling green countryside of Perthshire in Scotland.

Indeed, France and Scotland have long had significant ties, from the Auld Alliance to the “Écosse” flag used by lorry drivers from the northern country to show their affinity with France.

Alongside this centuries-long French-Scottish connection, Chiuri also delved into the house archive when she chose to showcase her latest collection at Gleneagles Hotel.

It is the same spot where in 1955, Monsieur Dior – a lifelong admirer of the country – presented his work in a ballroom at the hotel.

Discussing the choice in the notes which accompanied the new collection, the house said “For the Creative Director of Dior Women’s Collections, this country has become the narrative framework of the Dior Cruise 2025 collection – unveiled in the gardens of Drummond Castle – where memories, inspirations and suggestions fuse to generate shapes and embroideries.”

Through the collection, Chiuri weaves narratives both historical and those of the more recent past. There are emblems also referencing Mary Queen of Scots and far more recent references to the punk subculture movement and its association with Scotland.

Elsewhere, a map of Scotland is depicted across pieces in the collection, while photographs from the spring-summer 1955 presentation are transformed into prints or employed as appliques on the edges of kilts or pea coats, in a kind of cinematic montage.

Throughout the collection, looks merged contrasting elements, including the diverging textures of velvet and lace dressing the contemporary equestrian. Certain silhouettes feature exaggeratedly wide sleeves which, on white shirts, appear under little dresses with gathered skirts and bustiers resplendent with embroidery. Indeed, the latter can be found on several dark, iridescent pieces that are sometimes adorned with pearls. Meanwhile, lace collars, in their turn, brighten up the black.

The French collection also celebrated the iconic Scottish design – tartan. The common thread running through this veritable celebration of the kilt, whether made directly in Scotland or reinterpreted. Not to forget dresses conceived in diverse lengths, as well as coats and capes with large hoods. Rain boots come and go. Small jackets adopt the grey of menswear fabrics and the iconic Bar jacket sports black velvet Brandenburg buttons.

The collection was a reminder that between great alliances, even better things can be born.

From The Wim Hof Method To Nordic Bathing: Everything You Need To Know About Cold Therapy

The healing powers of ice have been used across different cultures for thousands of years, with evidence of ancient civilisations harnessing the power of extreme cold for its medicinal properties.

Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, for example, are known to have all used cold therapy for healing purposes. Interestingly, among the advocates was Hippocrates, the ancient Greek physician often referred to as the “father of medicine,” who advised the use of cold water and snow for treating several injuries and illnesses. Meanwhile in Eastern medicine, – particularly in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, the ancient healing system of India – cold therapy has been used for centuries to treat a wide range of ailments, from inflammation to some types of pain and fever.

Perhaps one of the more widely known forms of cold water therapy comes from Scandinavian and northern countries, such as Sweden, Norway and Finland, where cold water Nordic bathing has been a longstanding tradition. Saunas, followed by plunges into icy lakes or rivers, are an integral part of the culture in these countries. This practice, known as “avantouinti” in Finland, is believed to have originated centuries ago and is cherished for its invigorating and health-promoting effects. You may have seen winter swimming across TikTok and Instagram too, the trend known as “polar bear plunging,” is actually a tradition in the region where individuals swim in icy waters, typically during the winter season. In Scandinavian countries, winter swimming clubs and events are common, attracting participants who embrace the challenge and camaraderie of swimming in cold conditions. Winter swimming is believed to have health benefits such as strengthening the cardiovascular system, improving circulation, and enhancing overall well-being.

The Wim Hof Method

Further south, in 2011 scientists at Radboud University started to study the anatomy of Dutch athlete Wim Hof. Through their observations of his use of cold water therapy, they discovered that he was able to voluntarily influence his autonomic nervous system. This was a revolutionary moment for the sporting and health community as before this study, as it was something thought to be completely impossible for human beings to achieve. Following the discovery, the Wim Hof Method” as it has come to be known, has been exported worldwide, with certified instructors now offering courses in more than 40 countries. The Wim Hof Method includes specific breathing techniques, often referred to as “power breathing” or “controlled hyperventilation.” These breathing exercises are designed to increase oxygen intake, alkalise the blood, and reduce the levels of carbon dioxide. This can result in improved focus, reduced stress, and increased energy levels. Alongside cold exposure and breathing exercises, the method incorporates elements of meditation and mindfulness practices. By focusing on the breath and cultivating a state of present-moment awareness, practitioners aim to enhance their mental clarity, reduce anxiety, and improve overall emotional well-being. Natasha Rudatsenko, founder of Health Nag explains, The Wim Hof Method combines cold exposure, breathing techniques, and mindset practices to promote physical and mental well-being. Most people feel an incredible boost in endorphins right away and I love the fact that he encourages you to practise meditative breathwork prior to the immersion too. By combing the two practices, the benefits are truly optimised and have a calming effect on the mind. Some studies have also shown promising results regarding the method’s effects on the autonomic nervous system and immune responses.”

The expansion of ice therapies

Wim Hof, however, by no means created cold therapy within modern sports and wellness communities. Indeed, three-time Olympian, European gold medalist and Founder of ROAR Fitness Dubai, Sarah Lindsay explains that as part of her team’s early training, as early as the turn of the new Millennium they were using ice baths. Lindsay explains: “ We were using contrast baths daily from 2002. We had hot baths and ice baths in our team changing room and used to do several minutes in each and rotate 4 or 5 times. My sport of speed skating was working with very high levels of lactic acid due to the intensity and distances but also the 90-degree ischemic position we skate in. This limits blood flow and oxygen to the muscle, resulting in high levels of tissue damage. We train at least two, sometimes three times per day so we needed all the help we could get with regards to recovery.” However, the sports expert also notes the limitations of the therapy if done alone. Ice therapy in isolation, I believe can be counterproductive to training progress as you are potentially limiting physiological adaptations. If you are injured or need to recover between race days then I think this is where ice therapy for athletic performance is more relevant.”

Cold therapy day-to-day

Through the mass expansion of cold therapy, a plethora of treatments are now available, with fitness influencers such as Janine Jahnke (@JolieJanine) sharing how-to videos for building your own at-home ice bath for a fraction of the traditional cost. However, rather than using cold therapy in isolation, Lindsay explains that it can offer benefits within a wider health practice. You can easily combine good ‘biohacking’ type practices [with cold therapy.]” Discussing her daily routine, the Olympian explains: My ice bath faces the sun which without doubt makes it easier to enjoy! I lie in the bath with the sun on my face soaking up that vitamin D, listening to calming music. When I get out I have a mushroom and collagen coffee ready which I take onto the grass for a spot of grounding/earthing. I only do 15 minutes but I use this time to meditate. Even if you just take the time to talk positively to yourself or practice a bit of gratitude you will feel more ready to take on the day. Don’t forget to smile! It’s impossible not to feel a little happier when you physically smile.”

Before attempting any cold therapy, speak to a medical professional.

Balenciaga Relaunches One Of Its Most Iconic Accessories

Balenciaga has reintroduced its exquiste Le City Bag.

A nostalgic style first launched in 2001, Le City became one of the most recognisable bags of the noughties and who better to front its relaunch than supermodel Kate Moss? Moss appears in the brand’s campaign with a black-and-white image shot by fashion photographer Mario Sorrenti.

The Best Places To Jet Off To This Spring 2024

Looking for somewhere to visit during the Spring season? We’ve found the best places.

 Athens, Greece

May is the perfect time to explore the Mediterranean capital of Athens, which is rich with art, culture and of course – its famous 4,000-year-old ruins from the heyday of Ancient Greece. Unlike the summer months, when the city is overrun with tourists and scorching hot temperatures, May provides a quieter, more refined time to explore the city. The city’s restaurant scene, tourism sites and luxury hotels are in full swing, but with far more space, and quality service from staff who are overwhelmed by the crowds. Be sure to explore the Acropolis, the ancient Temple of Poseidon, and the city’s other historic ruins, (with the added bonus of not feeling too hot or uncomfortable). Although the Greek capital is known for being the heart of Ancient Greece, it’s also home to a fabulous contemporary food scene, with plenty of innovative well-heeled restaurants and cafes to enjoy as well as an expansive art scene. Our recommendation? Be sure to try the local dish of souvlaki while visiting the city. One of the must-visit hotels in the city is Dubai’s very own One&Only property. The sumptuous luxury property is half an hour from downtown Athens and is only under an hour by private boat to the Greek islands of Aegina or Kea to explore the region further. If you wish for something more central while visiting the Greek capital, The Dolli offers five-star luxury in one of the grandest properties in downtown Athens. The exclusive boutique hotel mixes iconic views of the city and world-class interiors and art.

Everest, Tibet

If hiking is not your forte, it doesn’t mean you should remove the area surrounding Mount Everest from your travel list. During May, the area and villages around Mount Everest offer some of the best views of the world’s highest mountain peak. Throughout May Nepal generally enjoys clearer skies and milder temperatures compared to the colder winter months or the rainy monsoon season. The weather tends to be more stable in May, with less chance of precipitation, making it an ideal time to visit the area. Even if you don’t wish to hike to Everest Base Camp (or beyond) there are plenty of other shorter hikes and treks to explore – all with a side of stunning views of the Himalayan mountainscape and Mount Everest. May is also a great time to enjoy the diverse wildlife and blooming flora of the Everest region. The warmer temperatures encourage the growth of colourful flowers and lush vegetation, adding to the scenic beauty of the trekking routes. Additionally, wildlife such as Himalayan birds and animals tend to be more readily spotted during this time of year. Overall, May offers a combination of favourable weather conditions, improved visibility, manageable trekking trails, and vibrant natural surroundings, making it a popular time to visit Everest in Nepal. However, it’s essential to be prepared for varying weather conditions and to plan and book accommodations and permits in advance when possible, as May can also be a busy time to visit the region.

Hay-on-wye, United Kingdom

Britain’s most famous literature festival takes place during the month of May, in the quaint small town of Hay-on-Wye. The beautiful destination is often referred to as the UK’s “Town of Books,” with the picturesque destination nestled in the stunning Welsh countryside. From the 23rd of May to the 2nd of June this year famed industry names and well-known faces descend on the bougie Welsh book hub for two weeks of talks, workshops and events throughout the arts festival. The Hay Festival is renowned for its diverse lineup of speakers, including authors, poets, scientists, politicians, and artists from around the world. Attending the festival provides an opportunity to engage in thought-provoking discussions, literary readings, and performances, enriching your cultural understanding and perspective. With its broad range of topics and speakers, the Hay Festival provides a platform for exploring a wide array of ideas, ranging from literature and politics to science and the arts. It’s a place where you can delve into subjects you’re passionate about or discover new interests, fostering intellectual curiosity and growth. Listening to talks and presentations by influential figures at the festival can be highly inspiring. Whether it’s hearing about someone’s personal journey, gaining insights into global issues, or discovering new ideas and perspectives, the Hay Festival is a source of inspiration for many attendees. The Hay Festival offers a variety of activities and events suitable for all ages, including workshops, storytelling sessions, and performances specifically for the youngest members of the family. The festival can be a great place for families to bond over a shared love of literature and culture.

Mexico City, Mexico

Cinco de Mayo is one of the two biggest festivals on the Mexican calendar (aside from the “Day of the Dead” in November)  held each year on the 5th of May. The festival historically remembers the 1862 victory by Mexican troops over invading French forces at the Battle of Puebla. The triumph over the better-equipped and more numerous French troops was an enormous emotional boost for the Mexican soldiers. However, in reality, the modern-day celebration is much more focused on cultural street parades, live music, cultural exhibitions and floats showcasing vibrant costumes, and music celebrating Mexican heritage and pride. Take advantage of the holiday to explore some of Mexico City’s iconic landmarks and historical sites. Visit places like the National Museum of Anthropology to learn about Mexican history and culture, or explore the historic centre to see landmarks like the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace. Be sure to indulge in the rich Mexican cuisine on offer throughout the city during the holiday (and year round too) Must-try traditional dishes include tacos, tamales, mole, pozole, and chilaquiles. Many restaurants and eateries may offer special menus or themed dishes for Cinco de Mayo. Take part in the nightlife too – Many hotspots, clubs, and five-star hotels in Mexico City host Cinco de Mayo parties and events with live music, DJ performances, and festive decorations. Enjoy dancing, socialising, and celebrating with locals and fellow travellers in a vibrant and energetic atmosphere.

Abu Dhabi Art Showcases Artists From Its Beyond Emerging Artists At The Venice Biennale

Abu Dhabi Art has gone from strength to strength over recent years. Since 2017, Abu Dhabi Arts Beyond Emerging Artists (BEA) programme has provided three emerging artists in the UAE with a platform from which to develop their practice and create ambitious art projects. The artists participate in a year-long programme of workshops and studio visits under the mentorship of a guest curator, before showcasing their works at the annual Art Fair in November at Manarat Al Saadiyat. The curator for this edition of the BEA programme is art historian, publisher, and curator Morad Montazami.

Now, for the 60th anniversary of the Venice Biennale, the leading UAE creative hub has expanded its reach to the Italian city for the second consecutive year to showcase the work of three artists from its BEA programme.

The exhibit in Venice is designed to introduce emerging UAE-based artists to a global audience. In timing the exhibition to coincide with La Biennale di Venezia, Abu Dhabi Art offers the young artists an opportunity to exhibit their work on an international stage and engage with art professionals, collectors, and fellow artists.

This years artists include Almaha Jaralla, Samo Shalaby, and Latifa Saeed, who are exhibiting their work at Marignana Arte Gallery in Venice until the 15th of May, coinciding with the internationally recognised spectacular art fair, which this year holds the theme of Foreigners Everywherethis year. Find out more about the three young creatives, leading the way in the UAE art scene below.

Almaha Jaralla

This up-and-coming Emirati conceptual artist explores different eras in the countrys recent history through her work. The fast-changing landscape in the UAE – and in particular, Abu Dhabi, the city she grew up in – has been a key influence fo the young artist. Part of her work is inspired by the generational dialogue she has had with those who came before her and remembers the country at different stages in the 20th century, including her father and grandmother. She explores these themes through a mix of photography and paint, and work which is both tangibly layered in craft as well as in symbolic meaning. Indeed, when discussing her participation in the exhibition in Venice, she drew upon the historic ties between the Arab World and Europe.Showing in Venice with Abu Dhabi Art is really interesting for me because of the history of pearl trading between our part of the world and Europe – in particular Venice. Pearl diving was crucial for our economy before the oil boom that was to change our urban fabric. As our towns and cities transform even further, how will we remember the architectural remains of our not-so-distant past, that are already disappearing? Venice, like Abu Dhabi, is an island but whilst we grapple with radical change, in what seems an incredibly short time frame, Venice has suffered centuries of flooding and damage to its buildings and architecture. I think there are interesting conversations to be held about the architecture of both places, about the context of showing my exhibition, Crude Memory, in Venice.”

abudhabiart.ae

Latifa Saeed

Latifa Saeed is an Emirati multidisciplinary artist who has had a powerful impact on the regional art scene in recent years. Following her Arts and Sciences degree which she graduated from in 2007, she was selected for the Emerging Artist Fellowship by the Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation in partnership with Rhode Island School of Design in 2019 in the city of Abu Dhabi. The artist then went on to win a grant from the Misk Art Institute in Riyadh in 2021, where she participated in the group show Under Construction” at The Prince Faisal bin Fahd Fine Arts Hall in Riyadh. During the same year, the talented Emirati artist was also selected as a finalist of the Richard Mille Art Prize hosted by the Louvre Abu Dhabi Art Herein 2021 and participated in their group show Memory, Time, Territory.” Latifa was recently the first Emirati artist to showcase her work in Almaty, Kazakhstan with a solo exhibition Black Silhouette” curated by the renowned art historian, critic, and author, Valeria Ibraeva. Discussing her participation in the exhibit in Venice, Saeed said: I am most excited about the opportunity to weave my narrative into the rich tapestry of this global cultural haven. For emerging artists, such opportunities are vital; they offer a global stage, fostering growth and dialogue. Visitors to Venice can expect my work to be a reflection and representation of my regions essence, I will be showcasing a dissection of a natural phenomenon observed in the Gulf desert landscape under the title Dust Devils, creating a dialogue between nature and innovation.”

Samo Shalaby

Palestinian-Egyptian artist Samo Shalaby grew up between Cairo and Dubai before winning a place at the prestigious Central Saint Martins College in London. While there, he was exposed to a multitude of different creative art forms. The artist is now based between London and Dubai and as a result of his diverse experience, his artistic explorations traverse the styles of antiquity, surrealism, and the grotesque, filtered through his own contemporary and personal lens. Discussing his participation in the Venice 2024 show, Shalaby said As an artist, being invited to exhibit in Venice is both an honour and an exhilarating opportunity to showcase my work on a global stage. I’m particularly excited to present What Lies Beneath,’ my latest installation that debuted at Abu Dhabi Art in November 2023. Through a fusion of personal narratives expressed through painting, installation, antiquity, and multimedia elements, I aim to create an immersive experience that invites viewers to explore the complexities of identity and perception.” Shalaby also stressed how important events such as the Venice Biennale were, for young artists such as himself, For emerging artists like myself, platforms like this are vital spaces where we can push boundaries, challenge conventions, and offer fresh perspectives on art and culture. As a Middle Eastern artist, it’s crucial to elevate diverse voices and bring them to global attention. I am grateful to the BEA platform for their support and advocacy for emerging artists, and I look forward to sharing my vision with audiences in Venice and beyond.”

How To Protect Hydrate And Glow During The Summer Months

From powerful UV rays to the risk of dehydration, our skin can require a little extra care throughout the summer months.

Indeed, in the Arab region, we experience some of the hottest temperatures on the planet and some of the most challenging humidity conditions during the warmer season which means that investing in skincare is essential. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the best practices and products to help you look after your skin to combat the hotter weather.

Quench that thirst

Luckily the best way to achieve healthy skin comes at a minimal price – through staying hydrated. During the summer months, warmer temperatures can lead to dehydration, which can manifest in dry, dull skin. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Although it can be difficult to keep note of how much water you have consumed, there are two easy ways to do so. You can do this by using a long-life sustainable water bottle with volume content listed on the side, or by downloading one of the many free apps which remind you to sip throughout the day and help you to clock those millilitres. Additionally, another great way to stay hydrated is by incorporating skincare products which promote moisture absorption into your routine. Products to look out for include lightweight moisturisers and serums containing hyaluronic acid or glycerin. These ingredients attract moisture to the skin, keeping it plump and supple even in the heat.

Beat the heat

One of the most crucial steps in summer of course, is sun protection. UV rays can cause a multitude of nasties, including everything from premature ageing and sunburn to skin cancer. Be sure to opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and apply it generously to all exposed areas of your skin. Reapply every two hours, especially if you’re swimming or sweating. Additionally, seek shade during peak sun hours, (in the Gulf region this is typically between 11 am and 3 pm) to further minimise damage from sun exposure.

Another way you can help to protect your skin from harmful UV rays is through antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, which help protect the skin from free radical damage caused by the suns radiation along with environmental stressors. Try to make sure you’re getting the recommended amount of these two powerhouse vitamins in your diet, and also look for serums or moisturisers containing them too, to boost your skin’s defence mechanisms and prevent premature ageing. Apply them in the morning before sunscreen for maximum efficacy.

Revamp your routine

During the hotter months, the combination of sweat, sunscreen, and environmental pollutants can build up on the skin, leading to clogged pores and breakouts. Be sure to cleanse your skin twice daily with a gentle, non-stripping cleanser to remove impurities without compromising your skin’s natural moisture barrier.

Although you should avoid harsh exfoliants during the summer, chemical exfoliants containing ingredients like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) can help slough off dead skin cells, unclog pores, and improve skin texture. However, be sure to use these products sparingly, as they can increase sun sensitivity. Incorporate exfoliation into your nighttime routine, and of course –  follow up with sunscreen during the day.

Soothe your skin

Skin can easily become irritated during the hotter weather, from dryness to heat rash. Combat heat-induced inflammation and redness with cooling skincare products such as mists, gels, or sheet masks containing ingredients like aloe vera, cucumber, or chamomile. Keep them in the refrigerator for an extra delightfully refreshing sensation, and use them whenever your skin needs a quick pick-me-up throughout the day. Treat your skin to a hydrating mask once or twice a week to replenish moisture and revive dull complexion. Be sure to also look for masks formulated with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or honey. Apply a thick layer to clean the skin, leave it on for 10-15 minutes, then rinse off with lukewarm water for soft, radiant skin.

Natural beauty

Heavy, oil-based makeup can feel suffocating on the skin in hot, humid weather and may contribute to clogged pores and breakouts. The best way to go is to opt for lightweight, oil-free formulas, such as tinted moisturisers, BB creams, or mineral foundations, that allow your skin to breathe while providing coverage and sun protection.

Eat the rainbow

Alongside making sure you stay hydrated and get enough vitamins C and E, your overall diet can also have a massive impact on the quality of your skin, particularly when the weather is more trying and stressful on your pores. The best way to address this is to make sure youre regularly eating many different coloured vegetables and fruits – hence the phrase many nutritionists use – eat the rainbow!  Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids provides essential nutrients for healthy skin. As with most health matters, having a regular sleep routine and exercise can also vastly help improve the appearance of your skin.

Artist And Curator Alia Al Farsi Discusses Oman’s Entry At The Venice Biennale 2024

In an increasingly hyperconnected world, the 2024 Venice Biennale has turned its focus to how, at one time or another, we will all experience life within a culture different from the one we were born into and in turn, meet people from differing backgrounds and life experiences.

The result is the impressive overarching festival for its 60th edition, which is titled Foreigners Everywhere.” For Omans Pavilion at the Biennale, organisers have looked to Alia Al Farsi, a leading figure in Omans contemporary art sector, to curate the exhibition, for the country. Alongside owning and running Omans largest private gallery, Al Faarsi has participated in numerous exhibitions, both at local and international levels. Notably, she was a keynote speaker at the UAE Embassy in 2023, where she contributed to a virtual panel discussion on the Fine Arts scene in Oman and the UAE. Her work has been showcased in prestigious exhibitions worldwide, such as the KunstRai exhibition in Amsterdam in 2022. Al Farsi held a solo exhibition at the 15 Gallery in Riyadh in 2021, demonstrating her artistic prowess. Her international presence extends to the London Global Art Fair “Art 15” in 2015 and the London Arabia Art and Fashion Week in 2017, along with many other art gatherings. For her entry into the 60th Venice Biennale, she has presented a collection of five prominent Omani artists, including her own work, under the theme Malath-Haven,” drawing upon Omans historic position as a country welcoming and opening to people from other cultures. This month we sat down with Al Farsi to learn more about her experience within the Omani art scene and her thoughts about this years Biennale.

What was your inspiration for Malath-Haven”?

In Arabic, Malathmeans safe space,or a port where travellers could find comfort, peace, and a sense of home. Drawing from Omans centuries-long values – inclusivity and hospitality – the exhibition demonstrates the talent of local Omani artists, whose work reflects the country as a refuge to those seeking shelter and belonging.

How did you incorporate it within the wider Foreigners Everywhere” theme for Venice this year?

To relate to the Biennales theme of Foreigners Everywhere”, we wanted to showcase the impact of multiculturalism on the country, using the historical influence of foreigners as a guide, my team and I came up with a selection of pillars that encompassed the theme: language, food, architecture, attire, and arts. With our art, we aimed for these pillars to be represented in the exhibition.

Tell us a bit about the artists you have chosen to include at the Pavilion.

When I was selecting the artists for this years Biennale, I was inspired by Omans wealth of talent and in particular how certain artists blend traditions and heritage with contemporary creativity. In their work, the artists [chosen] really showcase their cultural background and artistic identity. Their work fosters cross-cultural understanding and celebrates the breadth of artistic mediums and narratives in Oman. They use innovative techniques, materials, and concepts influenced by our culture to help them stand out in the global art scene and contribute to the conversations of contemporary issues

What was the selection process for including the artists in the Biennale?

I have had the privilege of working with a supportive and dedicated team throughout my experience curating the Biennale exhibition. In selecting artists for the exhibition, we put their capability of embodying the Foreigners Everywhere” theme first. During the consideration process, we assessed how a variety of local Omani artists were able to reflect on the pillars specific to this exhibition. The pillars – language, food, architecture, attire, and arts – were essential in curating the exploration of our societys interconnectedness and diversity, so we took the artistsabilities to sufficiently represent them into account.

What are some of the highlights from the works being shown at the Pavillion?

The artists reflect the art scene in Oman by mixing traditional concepts with contemporary expressions. In my work, Alias Alleys”,  I wanted to transform my timeless cityscapes into an immersive journey, enveloping visitors in garments that symbolise the rich cultural tapestry of Oman and building a city where no one feels like a foreigner, creating an inclusive place with a multitude of possibilities that define the country today, portraying Oman as a cherished home for all.

Water” by Dr Ali Al Jabri combines tree woods with local marble, demonstrating the fruits of Omans natural landscape and symbolising the journey of an immigrant in search of belonging. In Dr Al Jabris sculptures, each well is adorned with unique colours, symbolising diversity, while their bases remain uniform, representing our common origins as humans. As the sculptures ascend, they illustrate how societies and experiences shape us differently over time.

Sarah Al Olaqi took the concept of cherished family recipes to demonstrate the importance of food as solace and identity in Breaking Bread”. The installation aims to evoke a sense of appreciation for the rich traditions of Omani women, preserving family recipes and quietly shaping the narrative of their lineage and their clothing, specifically the niqab. The use of spoons in the installation represents the transformation of ordinary utensils into a symbolic representation of cultural identity.

Meanwhile, Essa Al-Mufarjis work Madad” unveils the subtle yet profound ways in which languages and terminologies are shaped by external influences. His installation is a testament to this nuanced understanding, presenting viewers with Arabic calligraphy inspired by poetry crafted over a millennium ago, exploring themes of immigration and foreignness with timeless elegance.

Last but not least, Adham Al Farsis video art The Fate of Outsiders” tells the tale of turtles as a metaphor for foreigners in life. Each screen shows the potential fates of these outsiders, one serene, the other depicting their unfortunate demise due to choosing the wrong path. Ultimately, these works all embody the globalisation of Oman, depicting its multiculturalism.

How have you chosen to lay out the works in the Pavillion?

I chose to lay out the works based on the concept of taking the visitor on an immersive journey through the diverse elements of interconnectedness in Omani society. I arranged the artworks so the journey starts with Dr Al Jabris work, which leads visitors through a sensory exploration of the scents he incorporates into his sculptures. Next, visitors proceed to Alias Alley” to experience the vibrant colours and cultures at the heart of Oman. From there, they move to Al Olaqi ‘s exhibit, which celebrates women and food. Then, visitors explore Al-Mufarjis work, which offers an auditory journey through the sound of wind passing through his artwork, carrying Arabic poems and phrases engraved on the pieces. Finally, the journey concludes with Al Farsi’s visually immersive experience, following the tale of turtles and their connection to Oman as their homeland.

As it celebrates its 60th anniversary, what significance do you think the Venice Biennale hold in the wider artistic and cultural community?

The significance of the Venice Biennale in the artistic and cultural community is immense, as it is a place where artists can engage in meaningful dialogues with international creators, inspiring creativity, collaboration, and cultural dialogue. It secures an artists status in the global arts scene and allows them to share their own perspectives on global issues. It has been an honour and a privilege to curate the second edition of the Sultanate of Oman Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Being an Arab and Omani artist and curator, my aim is to encourage exchange, experimentation, and discussion that can help deepen our personal and national culture. I hope to demonstrate the richness and antiquity of our culture to a wider audience, while simultaneously challenging the stereotypes that can often be associated with it.

The Venice Biennale runs until Sunday 24th of November 2024. labiennale.org/en
