Chopard Partners With Red Sea International Film Festival For 2023

Chopard has been announced as the official partner for the Red Sea International Film Festival which is due to start tomorrow.

Bringing the best in Arab and world cinema to Jeddah, the third edition will run until the 9th of December.

As the Festival’s watch and jewellery partner, Chopard has created the main award of the competition, the “Golden Yusr for Best Feature Film”: a beautiful rock crystal shell enhanced with 18-carat ethical gold. The Maison will also present the “Best Emerging Talent Award”.

Discussing the partnership, Caroline Scheufele, Chopard Co-President & Artistic Director said: “Chopard shares a number of key values with cinema, including a strong focus on daring and creativity. Just like movie stories, our watches and jewellery are thus great sources of emotion and a vector for escapism: they provide a comforting bubble away from the world. We are thrilled to be furthering our commitment to the seventh art through our partnership with the Red Sea International Film Festival.”

The event is not the first time Chopard has celebrated the film industry. Since 1998, the house has been a loyal official partner to the Cannes Film Festival. Caroline Scheufele has thus forged unfailing ties with the numerous directors, artists, stylists, actresses and actors whose creations she admires, and on the silver screen, as evidenced by the Maison’s participation in films such as Rocketman (Dexter Fletcher, 2019), Aline (Valérie Lemercier, 2020) or No Time To Die (Cary Joji Fukunaga, 2020), while ensuring that Chopard’s magnificent Haute Joaillerie adds to the sparkle of actresses on the red carpet during the promotion of their films.

The love affair between Chopard and cinema is also at the origin of the Trophée Chopard, awarded each year since 2001 to highlight a young actress and actor emerging onto the international scene.

How Salama Mohamed Has Been Paving Her Own Way In The Skincare Industry

Emirati entrepreneur Salama Mohamed first launched her skincare brand after finding a gap in the market for high-quality products which catered to different skin sensitivities. The result was Peacefull” a UAE homegrown beauty line using South Korean ingredients. Over the past two-and-half years, since her label first launched, the brand has gone from strength to strength. We sat down with Salama to learn more about Peacefulls ongoing journey, what advice she would give to her younger self and her plans for 2024.

We last spoke to you in February 2022, following the successful launch of your beauty brand Peacefull. How has the brand progressed since then?

Peacefull is now available to a global audience as we now ship internationally via our own website.  Our community has also grown significantly. We’ve cultivated a vibrant and engaged online community where our lovely Peacefull community share their experiences, skincare journeys, and self-care routines. This sense of belonging and support has become a hallmark of Peacefull. Our dedication to providing effective skincare and celebrating diversity has garnered recognition in the industry with Peacefull recently receiving an award. Peacefull was also recently chosen as one of the top 100 innovators and beauty game-changers in the region.

What are the big differences between your business model when you launched and now?

Peacefull is still pretty much considered a startup and our business model had to adapt to the changing needs of customers and the market trends. Weve diversified our distribution channels to include retailers like Sephora and Tryani (in Yas Mall, Abu Dhabi) alongside our own website. Our branding and marketing strategy evolved, primarily thanks to gaining more insights into our audience. We were able to creatively experiment with social media and content marketing to actively engage with our community for long-term relationships. Plus, we actively seek and value our communitys feedback, which plays an important role in future product developments. Adapting the business model does take time but it has been instrumental in Peacefulls continued success.

What is the most rewarding part of your work at Peacefull?

As a brand that champions inclusivity and self-love, one of the most rewarding experiences since launching Peacefull is seeing how our products and messaging of empowerment contributed to men and women feeling better about their skin. Peacefull has cultivated a sense of community where everyone can share their truth, and their stories of how our products boosted their confidence, its incredibly fulfilling, and we understand the positive link between taking of ones skin and nurturing a healthy self-image.

What have been the main highlights at Peacefull in 2023?

Our main highlight in 2023 was our collaboration with RefuSHE, a remarkable organization that supports refugee women in their journey towards self-sufficiency, education, and safety. Peacefull launched its T-shirt towel collection, meticulously handcrafted with the vibrant tie-dye design by female artisans. Every purchase of these T-shirt towels will make a profound impact on the lives of women. By investing in their talents and skills, our purpose is to provide refugee women with opportunities to rebuild their lives, for themselves and their families.

Clean beauty is now one of the fastest-growing areas in the industry. Why do you think there has been such an increase in interest in the area?

Consumers are becoming more conscious about the ingredients found within their everyday skincare products and they are taking it upon themselves to research the formulations. The beauty industry is also facing stricter regulations on their formulas and their marketing claims. The heightened focus on health, transparency, and clean beauty is certainly gaining momentum and will continue to do so.

Out of your range, which product do you use the most yourself and why?

Thats such a difficult question! Each of Peacefulls five products serves a specific purpose. If Ive had a long day outdoors, I gravitate towards the cleanser to refresh my skin. If I didnt have a great nights sleep, our Peptide Eye Cream is a saviour to minimise fine lines and reduce puffiness around the eyes. When I feel like my skin needs that extra dose of hydration when Im putting on makeup, I mix my foundation with our Oil Like Essence for that extra glow as well.

Which has been the most popular product at Peacefull, and why do you think that is the case?

All five of our products have shown their popularity among our community, however we do witness a few products getting more traction depending on our audiences differing personal skincare journeys. Our cleanser is always one of our top-selling items because it is a great introductoryproduct so you can start your routine with a fresh face. Our toner and moisturiser have been popular among men because of their non-sticky texture and quick absorption. Our Peptide Eye Cream is a big seller because of the power it packs.

What does your evening skincare routine look like?

I choose not to complicate my evening skincare routine. The simple steps are cleansing, exfoliating (2-3 times a week and only when needed), toning, eye cream, moisturising, lip oil and a hydrating mist (occasionally when I feel like my skin is parched). My evening skincare routine is primarily based on how my overall day turns out.

Do you follow a strict day-to-day skincare routine?

I wouldnt use the word strict’ – I follow a caring and mindful day-to-day skincare routine. Consistency is key, and I make sure to adapt my routine to match my skin’s condition and specific concerns. I appreciate the power of practising a mindful approach towards skincare as it presents a great moment to reflect.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

The advice Id give to my younger self when it comes to my skin is: Youre not alone and you will find (and create!) what works for your skin. A general piece of advice to my younger self would be to stay curious. Curiosity is what will lead you to your purpose.

What advice would you give to a woman or girl who feels unconfident with their skin?

In the age of social media, fake filters, and photo editing, dont compare yourself to others. Skincare is a personal journey and everyones on a different path. And finally, understand that imperfections are part of being human.

You have built such a massive following online. Why do you think your content resonates with such a large audience?

Any content I put out there, I instil my authentic, true self in it – Im a storyteller at heart and I know that sharing genuine stories and experiences, with positive, powerful messages, and at times, delivered in a humorous manner, speaks to an audience.  I also know that creating content is a two-way street – I actively speak to my audience to create that sense of community and make everyone feel seen and heard.

What is the most memorable feedback you have received from a follower about your beauty brand?

The most memorable feedback Ive received from a member of our Peacefull community was that they had come to the realisation that they used heavy makeup and over-exaggerated filters to mask the truth of how they were feeling about their skin. Through our initial launch campaign, she saw men and women who looked like her, with completely bare skin, showing their skin imperfections to the world. She talked about how Peacefull had given her the results she had longed for, without the need to buy excess products and overcomplicate her routine.

This feedback served as a reminder of the positive impact our brand could have on people’s lives, and it reinforced the importance of the mission we stood for – to empower individuals to feel confident and beautiful in their own skin. It was a testament to the power of effective skincare in enhancing not just external beauty but also inner confidence and self-worth.

What do you look for, when selecting ingredients to use in your range?

The main consideration when selecting ingredients is the effectiveness in addressing specific skin concerns and issues. This leads to vigorous testing of each ingredient to ensure that it delivers the results were looking for. Assessing the safety profile of each ingredient is essential as well. I also prefer using ingredients that are ethically sourced and produced and that meet all regulatory safety standards.

Where do you take inspiration from for your range?

I find inspiration all around me. I find inspiration from spending time with my large family and listening to my aunts mention a certain technique or a tried-and-true method to fix or alleviate an issue. I pay close attention to my audiences feedback, I watch user-generated content to see what beauty enthusiasts are finding issues in, and are sharing tips in and what theyre anticipating from brands. Sleeping Well Could Be The Single Greatest Investment In Your Health

If scientists told you that they had discovered a brand new treatment, which “enhances your memory, makes you more attractive. Keeps you slim and lowers food cravings, protects you from cancer and dementia and wards off colds and flu. Lowers your risk of heart attacks and stroke, not to mention diabetes [and] you’ll even feel happier, less depressed, and less anxious.” Would you be interested in trying it? Chances are, you absolutely would. But the revolutionary treatment Dr Matthew Walker is referring to is not an expensive new drug – it’s simply a good night’s sleep.

A growing body of research which Dr Walker explores in his seminal text Why We Sleep shows that prioritising your sleep each night could be the single greatest investment you could possibly make in your physical and mental well-being at any given stage of your life.

The grind mentality

“Hustle” or “grind” culture is something that has gained traction in recent years, but it is not altogether new. British Prime Minister Magaret Thatcher announced in the 1980s that she could survive on just four hours of sleep, which was seen as an incredible achievement. “I grew up with a similar mentality,” says GP, Dr Lewis Clarke. “I would often finish work in the early hours of the morning, get a few hours rest then rise early to go to a gym class or a run, before starting my day, and repeating this process.“ However, since having a child and realising the effect [that sleep loss] has on my mood, my appetite and my general level of functioning, I have certainly started to prioritise it more in recent years. Dr Clarke goes on to explain that some of his patients who are struggling to sleep have described themselves as being “drunk on tiredness” and have extreme symptoms such as paranoia and hallucinations.

It’s particularly true that in the corporate world, “we often underestimate the power of sleep at our own peril,” says executive and corporate coach Noona Nafousi, CEO of NEO Noor. “Ignoring it can result in subpar performance, decreased well-being, and long-term health complications. I urge professionals not to consider sleep as an expendable commodity but as a critical investment in their success and longevity,” she explains.

24/7 access culture

The grind mentality, however, does not exist in a vacuum. It’s something which has arguably snowballed in correlation with the growth of “24-hour-access culture” which has proliferated since the birth of the internet. “I often find that executives and corporate leaders are constantly plugged into their devices, with a never-ending stream of emails and messages keeping them perpetually ‘on.’ This heightened sense of responsibility and constant connectivity adversely affects their sleep quality,” explains Nafousi.  “The blue light from screens can disrupt [our brain’s ability to regulate sleep], and the mental load of staying connected can prevent the mind from relaxing enough to fall asleep. Undeniably, the current work culture glorifies busyness and often equates long hours with dedication and success. This not only encroaches on the time available for sleep but also amplifies stress levels. A culture that doesn’t prioritise work-life balance invariably results in compromised sleep and, by extension, compromised executive performance.”

Dr Clarke agrees, explaining the rapid change in culture over the past 20 years is impacting our sleep health: “Our phones are encroaching on all aspects of our lives, including sleep. So often people end their day with their phones in their hands and start the day by checking their phones. Our obsession with being digitally connected is negatively impacting our social, mental and even physical wellbeing. We’ve lost the process of winding down before bed, thus impacting the quality of sleep.” Neil Postman described the overwhelming negative impact of TV on our physical and mental health in his 1985 text Amusing Ourselves To Death.  What we have now, explains Dr Clarke is essentially “a TV in our hand.”

What steps can you take to correct your sleep routine?

The first step to improving your sleep routine is to “schedule your sleep,” advises Nafousi, “prioritise it as you would an important business meeting”. You should also create a pre-sleep routine, which prioritises winding down. A hot shower to help relax your muscles and lower body temperature, as well as relaxing activities such as reading or meditating can all help signal to your body that it’s time to start preparing for sleep. Your room should be like a cool dark cave too – our bodies need a lower temperature in order to get quality sleep make sure it’s “cold enough dark and quiet, says” Nafousi. Limiting caffeine intake several hours before sleep is also important. “Caffeine has an average half-life of five to seven hours. Let’s say that you have a cup of coffee after your evening dinner, around 7:30 pm This means that by 1:30 am, 50 per cent of that caffeine may still be active and circulating throughout your brain tissue. In other words, by 1:30 am., you’re only halfway to completing the job of cleansing your brain of the caffeine you drank after dinner,” explains Dr Walker. This means to get a restorative night’s sleep at 10 pm, you would need to stop drinking coffee at 2 pm, for example. Limiting blue light devices for one hour before bed and not eating for three hours before sleep are also important factors in preparing the body for sleep, adds Dr Clarke.

As a rule of thumb, the middle of the night (12 am) should be around the middle of our sleep cycle advises Dr Walker in his tome. He also explains that during different parts of the night, we go through NREM sleep and REM sleep, each of which plays a significant part in our overall health. “NREM predominates early in the night, is to do the work of weeding out and removing unnecessary neural connections. In contrast, the dreaming stage of REM sleep, which prevails later in the night, plays a role in strengthening those connections,” he explains. Importantly, this also means that if we go to bed late, we lose NREM sleep that we cannot replace by having a lie-in, in the morning. Equally, going to bed early and getting up before we’ve had enough sleep means that we lose out on vital REM sleep. Dr Walker also suggests that some people are naturally “night owls” or “morning larks” and something we should take seriously when planning our sleep routine. Which we should take into account when planning our individual sleep routines. The amount of sleep we need varies too, depending on our age. “Newborn babies can sleep up to 17 hours a day”, explains Dr Clarke, with the amount lessening as we age, with most mature adults needing around eight hours of sleep.

A holistic approach to sleep

Perhaps one of the biggest myths about sleep is that it is something that happens at night and is separate from our day-to-day waking activities. Actions throughout the day impact the quality of sleep we will have the following night. As Dr Walker explains “The internal twenty-four-hour clock within your brain communicates its daily circadian rhythm signal to every other region of your brain and every organ in your body. Your twenty-four-hour tempo helps to determine when you want to be awake and when you want to be asleep.” One of the most effective things we can do when we wake, he continues, is getting sunlight to trigger our body into recognising the start of a new day through sunlight on our skin.

Sometimes improving our sleep can come in the simplest of forms, adds Dr Clarke. “One of the things we look at when improving sleep is prescribing nature. This is a concept whereby a healthcare professional recommends a patient spend time in nature to benefit their health. Nature-based activities can include walking or running in parks, gardening, or going to a beach. This can assist with social connections and connection to the environment. I personally recommend looking at joining a local running group, many of which are free of charge. There are usually options available to people of all fitness levels, and often meet on a weekly basis.”

Could Rubies Soon Overtake Diamonds As The World’s Most Popular Gemstone?

Rubies have been admired and sought after for centuries, however, the industry is once again seeing a boom with an increasing number of people choosing to opt for the precious stone over other options such as diamonds.

A little-known fact about rubies is that they are actually the most expensive jewels in the world, with historical significance across many cultures and civilizations over several millennia. They are often associated with qualities like passion, power, and protection which is why they have been a go-to choice for many rich and famous clients. From the Sunrise Ruby”, worn by Elizabeth Taylor, which was gifted to her by Richard Burton to the “Necklace of the Burmese Rubies,” a gift from the people of Myanmar to Queen Elizabeth II. Indeed, as Sahil Jethwani a partner at Meena Jewellers explains: Rubies have played a significant role in the evolution of jewellery for many centuries. The origin of rubies as a valuable gemstone can be traced back as early as the first century. The stones popularity stems from its rarity and its associations with wealth, power and love.”

Although diamonds are now associated with engagement rings, it is still a relatively new concept. In the late 19th century, the famous jewellery house Tiffany & Co. unveiled the worlds first-ever advertising campaign which associated the diamond ring with a marriage proposal. However, historically, rubies held equal if not even greater footing than their shiny cousin. The Romans were the first group to use rings as a symbol of matrimony. At their wedding ceremony two rings would be exchanged – one with diamonds, the other with rubies. Both symbolise a lasting bond. In recent years, increasing demand has seen rubies return to the forefront of romantic proposals. Many celebrities including Eva Longoria and Jessica Simpson have recently chosen rubies over traditional rings.”Celebrities often choose rubies over diamonds because they are a unique and eye-catching choice. Rubies also have a long history and symbolism associated with love, passion, and excitement,” Jethwani explains. Many customers are shifting from diamonds to pure ruby engagement rings. Mainly because they are a direct symbol of love,” he says.

A shift towards Quiet Luxury could also be at the root of the increased interest in rubies, Jethwani suggests: I have definitely noticed an increase in the number of people buying rubies over other jewels, especially for special occasions such as engagements and Christmas. I have also noticed a trend towards more minimalist clothing and statement-making jewellery, which rubies are perfect for.”

The rubies that sell particularly well in our business are those with a deep red colour, good clarity, and an excellent cut. Customers also look for rubies from specific regions, such as Myanmar and Thailand,he continues.

Alongside the Quiet Luxury trend, social media has also impacted the gemstone market. The accessibility on social media to an unlimited number of jewellery houses has ramped up competitiveness between suppliers, who seek to offer better quality stones and unusual pieces which attract customers. “ Social media has fundamentally changed the relationship between businesses and consumers. One of the biggest changes I believe is how easy it is for consumers to learn about and compare businesses. Consumers are spoilt for choice and the responsibility is on businesses to deliver a high-quality customer experience,” Jethwani explains.

Ultimately, the popularity of rubies within the gemstone industry is not something that is expected to slow down anytime soon, either: Rubies are a popular choice for those who want to make a bold statement with colour,” says Jethwani. The rich red colour of rubies provides a striking contrast when paired with subtler pieces. Rubies are also rarer than diamonds, which makes them even more desirable for some customers and also makes them a good investment as they tend to hold their value over time.”

Montblanc Great Characters Muhammad Ali™ Limited Edition 98

Montblanc has announced the latest writing instrument in its Great Characters collector line, inspired by the three-time heavyweight champion of the world, Muhammad Ali.

The Montblanc Great Characters Muhammad Ali Collection is dedicated to a man who not only challenged opponents in the boxing ring but who used his mind, charisma and voice as an outspoken and tireless advocate for civil rights, sacrificing a long period of his career to stand up for what he believed in.

The collection is made up of three unique designs which each celebrate one of Ali’s major victories – in 1964, 1974 and 1978 when he won the world heavyweight championship.

Born Cassius Clay (1942-2016) in Louisville, Kentucky, Muhammad Ali took up boxing at the age of 12 after having his bicycle stolen and taking the advice of a police officer: before looking for retaliation, he should learn to fight. At 18, he stepped into the global spotlight at the 1960 Summer Games in Rome when he competed as an amateur light heavyweight and won the gold medal. Just four years later, he shook up the world of sports when he became the world heavyweight boxing champion, the same year he formally changed his name to Muhammad Ali.

Ali was also pacifist and outspoken on the subject of civil rights. He refused military service in 1967 and as a result had his sports licence suspended, and he was stripped of his world champion title. After three and a half years, he was allowed back into the ring and captured his second and third world titles. To this day, Muhammad Ali is the only three-time lineal world heavyweight boxing champion.

The three writing instruments which honour Ali in the new collection are the Montblanc Great Characters Muhammad Ali Special Edition, the Montblanc Great Characters Muhammad Ali Limited Edition 1942 and the Montblanc Great Characters Muhammad Ali Limited Edition 98.
