Stealth Style: Is Quiet Luxury the New Loud Luxury?

Even if you are not familiar with the term “Quiet Luxury”, you would probably recognise it if you saw it. The trend is a world away from Loud Luxury, with its oversized logos, emblems and motifs, across everything from luggage to unsurprisingly has also garnered itself the nickname as the “Uniqlo for billionaires”).

However, in the past 18 months, the trend has started to proliferate beyond the superyachts off the coast of Monte Carlo. Some have suggested this is in part due to the small screen triumph of the HBO show, “Succession”. The show, which follows a family of billionaire media tycoons living in New York, sees the characters dressed in Loro Piana, Zegna and The Row. A particular scene which went viral on social media from the recent final season, saw the family’s nephew, Greg, being told that his date – who he had brought to a large family gathering – had made “an enormous faux pas.” Her crime? Bringing a large “loud” designer handbag to the occasion, covered in a luxury house emblem, which is seen as ostentatious and in “poor taste” by the host family.

T-shirts. Quiet Luxury, instead, as the adage goes, doesn’t speak, it whispers. The trend is all about the understated – focused on classic, sophisticated silhouettes, in neutral shades such as white, beige and navy. Brand logos are never on show – instead, pieces are hallmarked by unique stitch detailing and hard-to-source materials.

For some time, Quiet Luxury has been a way for the one per cent to distinguish themselves from the merely “rich”. Mark Zuckerberg – aka the owner of Meta and one of the wealthiest men on Earth – is regularly spotted in an understated grey t-shirt. It’s not just any grey t-shirt. However, it is custom made by the king of cashmere, Brunello Cucinelli at $300-400 per shirt (a house which perhaps unsurprisingly has also garnered itself the nickname as the “Uniqlo for billionaires”).

However, in the past 18 months, the trend has started to proliferate beyond the superyachts off the coast of Monte Carlo. Some have suggested this is in part due to the small screen triumph of the HBO show, “Succession”. Bringing a large “loud” designer handbag to the occasion, covered in a luxury house emblem, which is seen as ostentatious and in “poor taste” by the host family.

According to Sébastien Létrange, chairman of French luxury house LÉTRANGE, loud emblem-driven luxury is “traditionally [about] a product that will provide an immediate statement. The customer wants to be ‘seen’ as a member of a particular club that he or she is part of, or wants to belong to.” By inference, the Quiet Luxury customer already belongs to the club and does not feel a need to make a “loud” statement about their wealth status. In this way Quiet and Loud Luxury has become seen as an offshoot of a more established, talked about trend – Old vs New Money.

Earlier this year, news about Gwyneth Paltrow’s courtroom appearance (due to the mother of all Old Money reasons – a ski incident) quickly became overtaken by online discussion regarding her style choices in court. The case became a lesson in Quiet Luxury, with the Goop CEO appearing in a thought-out curation of Quiet Luxury brands each day of the trial. Indeed, as Milton Pedraza, chief executive of the Luxury Institute in New York commented in The Guardian at the time that the case took place: “These brands are easily recognised by members of their tribe…The wearer makes a statement without having to try to make a statement. Everyone who should know, knows.”

Max Mara

It’s also something that has gripped recent fashion weeks. Beyond the staple Quiet Luxury houses, those usually associated with bolder designs are taking note for the new season. At the recent Prada SS24 menswear show, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons used a simple white shirt as a focal point for “a reconsideration of simple things.” Meanwhile, Kaia Gerber led the Valentino runway for the FW23 Haute Couture show, wearing, at first look, a simple shirt and jeans combination – which – at closer examination, were faux jeans made out of gazar and embroidered with glass beads. Indeed, this is indicative perhaps of an increasing appetite amongst buyers for material integrity rather than spectacle: “Some of the bigger ‘logo brands’ are becoming so massive that, for some people, lots of their products are no longer a sign of distinction, nor a sign of quality despite very high prices because [the budget spent on] marketing has become such a heavy part of the pricing,” explains Létrange. “Quiet Luxury is all about focusing on the ‘excellency’ of a product, rather than worrying about what is required to make it recognisable to the masses,” he continues.

But it’s not just the runway shows and larger houses that are responding to the growth in popularity in the trend – sometimes known as “Stealth Wealth” – it is also becoming substantially more visible online. The term “Quiet Luxury” has gained more than 38.5 billion views, while Google has seen an increase in the search term (along with it the similar terms “Stealth Wealth” and “Old Money” increased more than 900% in terms of search. Meanwhile, the Instagram account The Gstaad Guy – which features a fictional Loro Piana superfan played by comedian Mac Anabtawi – regularly racks up hundreds of thousands of views with his Quiet Luxury comedy. The trend has started to filter down too, with high street labels offering cheaper takes on the expensive Quiet Luxury looks – something which is arguably harder for them to do, with“louder” pieces that demand a specific brand logo showcased on the design in an obvious way.

Loro Piana

So what does this mean for the future of Quiet Luxury – is the mainstream appetite for Quiet Luxury at odds with its exclusivity and a potential reason for its demise? According to Ian Griffiths, the Creative Director of Max Mara, it’s not likely to disappear anytime soon. “I think the world has always divided itself into two camps: luxury and bling. And it will always be that way. Just because a woman adheres to quiet luxury doesn’t mean she doesn’t want to be noticed. Quiet luxury is about clothes that frame the wearer’s style and beauty.” Létrange agrees, saying he believes that Quiet Luxury will stay relatively niche. “It’s for the happy few. Historically, luxury has never been about mass production. It is about limited production – and I believe it will stay this way, catering to the consumer who truly places importance on products that last a lifetime.”

Bulgari Releases The First Authorised History Of Its Watchmaking To Coincide With Geneva Watch Days

To coincide with Geneva Watch Days, Bulgari has released the first-ever authorised history of the house’s watchmaking in collaboration with Assouline.

The unique tome is called “Beyond Time”, and celebrates Bulgari’s 100 years of watchmaking.

According to the house, it is “the total of all Bulgari has ever achieved in the domain of horology since the 1920s”.

The book opens a far-reaching conversation on the watchmaking artistry of the Maison becoming a manufacturer. It weaves the past with the present, heritage with innovation, and, in its final chapter, looks ahead to technologies that will, in time, enhance the reality and experience of horology.

Aside from that, the new work engages with the brand’s collections through interviews with cinema directors, athletes, experts, and conductors.

A Bulgari watch is, by nature, many things. It is Serpenti; it is Bulgari Bulgari; it is Octo; it is Grande Complication. It is both high watchmaking and high jewellery. Unpredictable, impertinent, combining Italian flair with Swiss watchmaking mastery the Bulgari watch is not easily captured, but this collection by Assouline does good work of exploring the unique maison.

Girard-Perregaux Releases New Laureato Absolute 8Tech At Geneva Watch Days

Since unveiling the ultra-modern Laureato Absolute collection in 2019, Girard-Perregaux has continuously explored cutting-edge materials.

The new Laureato Absolute 8Tech, the latest addition to the Laureato Absolute collection, draws on the manufacturer’s amassed knowledge.

Using 8Tech, a groundbreaking technique, the case is formed of octagonal carbon parts, creating a random structural pattern. Once again, the Laureato Absolute showcases Girard-Perregaux’s ability to optimise avant-garde materials to breathtaking effect.

The styling of the Laureato masterfully unites differently shaped components. From the outset, the model was designed in-house.

It features an octagonal bezel, positioned above a circular plinth, which in turn rests upon an angular tonneau-shaped case. While these different forms are juxtaposed, they coalesce harmoniously.

In 2019, the Maison released a new expression of the 1975 classic, the Laureato Absolute. Sharing the same genetic codes as the Laureato, the Laureato Absolute collection embraces avant-garde design, bestowing each reference with an overtly sporty appearance.

Since the advent of the Laureato Absolute, Girard-Perregaux has repeatedly employed a variety of groundbreaking materials, including metallised sapphire crystal, carbon glass and rubber alloy. Now, the Maison perpetuates this philosophy with a new model, the Laureato Absolute 8Tech, a watch housed in a carbon/titanium composite made using an innovative and unique process.

The Reasons Why Career Confidence is Your Secret Weapon

The founder and CEO of Neo Noor, Noona Nafousi, explains how confidence can transform your career.

Confidence is your very own superpower. It is not something we are born with and not something we either have or don’t have. It is something that needs to be nurtured, worked on and built with daily intention.

Five reasons why it is your secret weapon for your career.

Personal Power

This power is an innate sense of worth, enabling you to set boundaries, demand respect, and pursue your career goals fearlessly. It’s the inner spark that reminds you of your value in every situation, be it in negotiations, relationships, or self-care rituals. When you possess this power, you are truly unstoppable, both in and out of the boardroom. The energy that you bring from personal power speaks before you say a word.

Overcoming Obstacles

Your resilient mindset helps you navigate challenges with grace and optimism, making you unstoppable. Having the confidence in yourself that you will be OK no matter what enables you not only to feel safe and secure in yourself but allows your colleagues to feel safe and secure in your resilience as well, making you an ideal candidate for promotions.

Effective Decision Making

When you’re confident, you trust your intuition and make decisions with clarity. Your decisiveness not only saves you time and mental energy but also projects an image of leadership. It’s like telling everyone around you , “I’ve got this!”

Boosted Networking

Let’s be real, networking can feel as uncomfortable but with career confidence, it’s like you’re floating on air. You’re less afraid of reaching out, making connections, and opening doors. Because when you know your worth, others will see it too.

Personal Growth and Empowerment

Personal growth is all about stretching beyond our comfort zones, and this can feel super scary. But with career confidence, you’re more inclined to take those leaps of faith, explore new territories, and constantly evolve. And let’s be honest, every bit of growth only adds to your skill set.

People see what we see in ourselves. The more confident we are in ourselves, the more others feel that confidence in our presence. This is why it is one of the most important weapons to harness and strength for our careers.

These Are The Five Dating Trends You Need To Know About

International matchmaker and dating expert, Christiana Maxion offers up the five dating trends you need to know about, in 2023.

The world of relationships and dating can feel like a modern minefield in 2023 – I get it! It can feel hard enough to make that initial connection, let alone make it to the first date. The ‘tried and tested’ route might not be working for you, or just feel old hat. It’s a new world out there, and as we are all craving those ‘in person’ feels these days, your dating game might just need a little bit of fresh inspiration.

Here are 5 dating trends I see with my clients, that might add a new take to your dating game too.

Breakfast dates

Meet a new suitor in the sober light of day! This works not only to assess any physical attraction but also a clearer intellectual and emotional connection without the fog of a noisy nighttime venue.

Hedging

Much like hedging your bets in the financial world, I strongly suggest stacking the odds in your favour with this trend. This is for the person you might be feeling ‘ iffy’ about and don’t want to waste a night out. Instead, stack a dinner with friends after you meet this person for drinks. This not only prevents you from wasting an outfit but also makes you more desirable if you leave for an event right after – always leave them wanting more.

Rainbow dating

This has nothing to do with colour and all to do with ‘exploring all the flavours of the rainbow’. If your usual type is not working for you, then explore other options. Date outside of your usual type and open up to different nationalities, religions, age groups, etc. If what’s current is not currently working for you, try something different, be open-minded, and date the whole map to find out what you’re truly attracted to.

Long distance

I am seeing more and more relationships start and thrive in the long distance. This especially works for two ambitious individuals who have a career as a top priority. This gives these daters the opportunity to thrive both separately and together. I see success for this in couples that have plans to see each other every three or four weeks. This only works for couples that are open about communication and have matching communication styles, but in a global world, never dismiss someone who isn’t in the same town, or even timezone.

Activity dating

I’ve touched on this above with the breakfast date scenario, but at whatever time of day or whatever venue, more and more people are forgoing a traditional drinks or dinner meet-up. With a clear head, your judgements are not clouded. You get to test if you have a true connection.

Remember, dating should be fun and explorative – getting out and about should be on your terms, comfortable and safe – have fun thinking of or suggesting new scenarios and getting out of that comfort zone into the modern dating world.

Here Are The Natural Ways You Can Boost Dopamine

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that plays a crucial role in mood regulation, motivation, pleasure, and various other cognitive functions. While there’s no guaranteed way to directly increase dopamine levels, there are several natural approaches that can help support a healthy dopamine balance in your brain. Here are some suggestions.

Healthy Diet

Consume foods rich in the building blocks of dopamine, such as tyrosine and phenylalanine. These include lean proteins like chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, and dairy products. Incorporate foods high in antioxidants, such as fruits and vegetables, to protect dopamine-producing neurons from oxidative stress.

Exercise

Regular physical activity has been shown to increase dopamine production and receptor sensitivity. Aim for a mix of aerobic and strength training exercises.

Adequate Sleep

Ensure you’re getting enough quality sleep, as sleep deprivation can negatively impact dopamine receptors and production.

Stress Management

Chronic stress can deplete dopamine levels. Practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, yoga, or mindfulness to manage stress.

Sunlight Exposure

Natural sunlight exposure helps regulate dopamine levels. Spend time outdoors each day to help maintain a healthy circadian rhythm.

Socialize and Connect

Engaging in meaningful social interactions and spending time with loved ones can boost dopamine production.

Set Goals and Achieve Them

Accomplishing goals, no matter how small, can trigger dopamine release and motivate you to keep working toward larger goals.

Engage in Creative Activities

Participating in creative hobbies like art, music, writing, or crafting can increase dopamine production and enhance feelings of reward.

Mindfulness and Meditation

Practising mindfulness and meditation can help increase dopamine receptor sensitivity and regulate mood.

Listen to Music

Listening to music you enjoy has been shown to stimulate the release of dopamine in the brain.

Laugh and Have Fun

Engaging in activities that bring you joy and make you laugh can lead to dopamine release.

Cold Showers

Some studies suggest that exposure to cold water, such as taking cold showers, may stimulate dopamine production.

Probiotics and Gut Health

Emerging research suggests a connection between gut health and dopamine regulation. Consuming foods rich in probiotics and maintaining a healthy gut microbiome could indirectly impact dopamine levels.

Of course, as with any health concerns, consult a medical professional.

Zawyeh Gallery in Dubai has launched a new virtual exhibition of selected works by the renowned Palestinian artist Nabil Anani. Anani presents the Palestinian landscape without disruptions, a perfectly manicured, well-tended landscape. He paints the picturesque hills of Palestine without the ever-increasing Israeli settlements, bypass roads, roadblocks, walls, and watch towers normally visible on every corner. He creates the Palestine of his dreams, inspired by his memories as a child growing up on the hills of Halhoul, a town near Hebron.

Fragile, Handle with Care by Giampiero Romanò

In Fragile, Handle with Care, Italian artist Giampiero Romanò combines his artistic creativity with his skills in restoration and preservation. Romanò is devoted to working with antique frames and mirrors, the source of his inspiration and from which he builds his universe but also breaks it. Romanò’s “Mirrors” could look rich and beautiful, yet they are extremely fragile, exactly like people. The artworks are also a representation of a journey to parallel temporal universes and are signs of revolution on the conventional in a bid for change.

Everything You Need To Know About Intermittent Fasting

If you’re interested in fitness trends you have probably heard of intermittent fasting. Put in simple terms, it refers to an eating pattern that cycles between periods of eating and fasting. Unlike many other diet plans it doesn’t prescribe specific foods to eat or avoid, but rather focuses on when you should eat.

During the fasting periods, you either consume very few calories or no calories at all. As a rule of thumb, the eating window refers to the time when you consume your meals, while the fasting window is the time when you abstain from eating.

Why do people do Intermittent Fasting?

Research suggests that there are a slew of potential benefits to carrying out Intermittent Fasting. Some include:

Weight loss

By restricting the eating window, you naturally consume fewer calories, which can lead to weight loss.

Improved insulin sensitivity

Intermittent fasting may help regulate blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Cellular repair

Fasting periods can trigger cellular repair processes, such as autophagy, where cells remove damaged components.

Heart health

Intermittent Fasting might improve various risk factors for heart disease, including cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and inflammation.

Brain health

Some studies suggest that Intermittent Fasting could enhance brain function and protect against neurodegenerative diseases.

Longevity

Animal studies have shown that intermittent fasting could extend lifespan, although more research is needed in humans.

Types of Intermittent Fasting

The 16/8 method

In this method, you fast for 16 hours a day and restrict your eating to an 8-hour window. This often involves skipping breakfast and having your first meal later in the day.

The 5:2 method

This approach involves eating normally for five days of the week and restricting calorie intake to around 500-600 calories on the remaining two non-consecutive days.

Eat-Stop-Eat

This method involves fasting for a full 24 hours once or twice a week. For example, you might eat dinner and then not eat again until dinner the next day.

Alternate-day fasting

With this method, you alternate between fasting days (where you consume very few calories) and regular eating days.

Warrior Diet

This diet involves fasting for 20 hours and eating a large meal within a 4-hour window in the evening.

Of course, as when making any significant changes to your diet or fitness routine, be sure to consult a healthcare professional first before changing to an Intermittent Fasting plan.

Life Lessons For Grown Women From The Barbie Movie

Natasha Hatherall-Shawe, the CEO of TishTash Communications, offers her the lessons that all women can learn from the new Barbie movie.

Whether you’ve seen the new Barbie movie or not, there is no doubt you will have ‘seen’ enough to know that it’s not really a kids’ movie by any means. With all the ‘Kenergy’ memes and more, you might be left wondering if it’s any more than a pink puff piece for pure entertainment. Director Greta Gerwig has intentionally created her own feminist manifesto, and whilst it may feel like a patriarchal parody, and certainly very pink, there are some definite points to be made that even we, as grown women can learn from our plastic friend.

Beware of toxic positivity

You’ll note that Barbie has a fleeting moment at the Dreamhouse disco. During her ‘best day ever’ her true feelings and thoughts begin to speak to her. Reality invading a world where everyone has to be happy all the time – sound familiar? Do you always have to have a smile on your face in ‘Real Life Land’? Well, no – toxic positivity is a thing, and whilst a positive outlook on life will never cause harm, it is also wholly unrealistic. Your emotions and challenges are valid – denial doesn’t make anyone feel better. – shutting out true feelings may even make us feel worse. It’s your life – warts and all, and all of your feelings are valid, even the less Instagram-worthy ones. Even Barbie leaves ‘Dreamland’.

Don’t be defined by a man.

Barbie might have Ken, but if you are yet to find your own Prince Charming  – that’s totally okay. Even if the ‘fairytale’ didn’t work out for you, just being ‘you’ is completely enough. Whatever society dictates, validation from the menfolk is not necessary for a fulfilled, modern life, on your own terms. In the movie – the stereotype is famously flipped, Ken needs his Barbie, but he soon discovers that he needs to truly find himself first.

Hatherall-Shawe says there are many key lessons in the film.

Career diversity is always available.

There is nobody quite like Barbie to show us that we can be it all, if that’s what we want. Previous generations might have stuck to a well-worn or expected career path with either no desire to change or a fear of the unknown or giving up stability, but you don’t have to! Easy to say when we rely on a steady income, but if you want to get out of your own rat race and try something different, the options are always there, from Pilot to Palaeontologist – nothing is impossible. Dream it, plan it, do it.

Always ask for help

We all need our own ‘Weird Barbie’ to lean on for advice or a friendly ear. Grown adults with busy lives – that’s all of us, right? When we feel we need the support of others, we often think that they too are living the same hustle and that we shouldn’t bother them. We pre-empt the feeling of rejection or past experiences when we want to reach out for help, then don’t. Opening up to others is hard, and even if others don’t quite know what to say or don’t respond immediately, it shouldn’t put us off. We are always stronger together.

Yes, the Patriarchy is real.

Barbie might be shocked with what she finds in the real world and we might be living in Dreamland ourselves if we think the strides we have made towards gender parity are enough. The movie shows us through fresh eyes the level of misogyny and what women go through every day at work and in their personal lives. It’s out there, and we must keep fighting the good fight, empowering and educating ourselves, our friends, our daughters and those who come after us as much as we can.

Own the space

When Barbie received her Nobel Peace Prize (yes, really), thanked everyone and then stated, “I work hard so I deserve it.” It really hit home. In the movie – women neither compete with each other OR apologise for their success. Usually, the only person holding you back from celebrating yourself or ‘owning your space’ is YOU. No apologies – stand proud.

Perfection does not exist.

Perception versus reality means that we often strive for the sometimes unattainable. Perfection, by its very definition, is unattainable. So, if perfection does not exist, it’s time to be comfortable with what we have and our best endeavours. The Barbieland ‘perfection’ wasn’t enough for Barbie – it was exhausting and she craved the real world. Should we just feel lucky that we already live in it? Perfectionism will always set us up for failure because we will never achieve it.
