Swiss powerhouses Hublot and Nespresso have come together to create an innovative new timepiece.
Their aim was to invent a watch which was built using upcycled sustainable parts, while remaining true to the ethos of Hublot’s watchmaking know-how.
The result is the Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin, a timepiece created from recycled Nespresso coffee grounds and capsules.

Hublot and Nespresso, two Swiss icons, have joined forces on an exceptional project:the creation of a Big Bang timepiece based on recycling and circularity. This watch is the first to be made using recycled Nespresso Aluminium capsules coffee grounds.
Creativity and boundary-pushing thinking was at the core of the collaboration, which saw recycled coffee grounds from capsules transformed into watch straps (including a rubber version and a second Velcro fabric version). Meanwhile, recycled Nespresso aluminium capsules became the case, bezel, crown and pushers of the new timepiece.

There are only 200 pieces available of the new limited edition iteration of the Big Bang, which has made history through the two brands joining together to create a timepiece which integrates innovation, excellence and sustainability.

Discussing the new launch, Hublot CEO Ricardo Guadalupe said “ This is a watch that delivers three world firsts: a symbol of the infinite possibilities for upcycling: a Big Bang made from the recycled aluminium of Nespresso coffee capsules; the first watch with a rubber strap containing 4.1% recycled coffee grounds from Nespresso capsules and 8.2% recycled rubber; and finally, the first watch with a Velcro strap made with SCafé, a fabric containing 5% recycled coffee grounds and 95% recycled polyester.”
The Bulgari Luna Blue Diamond – previously made famous by being worn to the 2023 Met Gala by Priyanka Chopra Jonas – has sold for more than AED 91.8 million (over US$25 million).
The actress is a global ambassador for Bulgari, and regularly wears their high end pieces to exclusive events.
The recent sale took place as part of Sotheby’s Geneva Luxury Week, after a four-minute bidding battle.
Initially mounted as a ring by Bulgari, the stunning 11.16 carat blue “fancy vivid” diamond had been part of a private family collection since the 1970s, being seen by very few people prior to its red carpet debut at the Met Gala this year.
Blue diamonds, of any kind and any size, are among the rarest in the world. Any blue diamond qualifying as “fancy vivid” (the brightest hue a diamond can display), as well as being over 10 carats is extremely rare.
There are less than 10 known diamonds in the category which have been auctioned in recent decades, and its unlikely another will be auctioned anytime soon.
In the Mediterranean, summer vacation is an artform.
From France, where out-of-office policy throughout August is de rigueur, to Italy’s summer celebration of dolce far niente (the sweetness of doing nothing). From coast-to-coast, time off during the heady summer months is something to be observed, devoured and enjoyed.

It’s a concept Donatella Versace and her new design partner, pop star Dua Lipa have been inspired by for their joint debut collection. On a night out together last year, the pair came up with the idea of creating a capsule inspired by the fun and joy of the summer season.

The result is Versace’s Pre Fall La Vacanza “vacation” collection.“We had such a good time designing this collection together. We felt like we were on vacation and that is exactly the spirit we want people to feel when they wear our clothes,” explains Versace. As is fitting for such a collection it was revealed on the French Riviera, a stone’s throw from the Cannes Film Festival in a luxury chateau overlooking the Mediterranean Sea yesterday evening.

There is a mix of references to Lipa’s spirited style throughout the kaleidoscope of looks, from the masterful reinvention of the house’s SS95 collection (the year that Lipa was born), to the inclusion of boxy lines and striking bold silhouettes which the songstress is known for favouring for her onstage attire.

Elsewhere, the capsule showcases an eclectic journey through the early 2000s. From BabyG Shock Watch colours – think bubblegum pink and baby blue hues – to pieces which take inspiration from the Barbie-esque style of Paris Hilton and preppy pieces which would not look out of place on Elle Woods.

There are some savvy segmented business decisions at the core of the new collection too. Or to put it another way, Gen Z has entered the luxury market group chat, and fashion houses like Versace are taking note.

Unlike previous collections, the Pre Fall 23 was available immediately – as the fashion house put it – “to download” and purchase after the launch. It also comes at a lower price point too, taking into consideration the spend available to the younger generation. Dua Lipa herself is an obvious choice too, to engage the Gen Z market, with a tribe of fans no doubt wanting to emulate the star who has promised to be wearing the collection “all summer long”.

Meanwhile the light stone facade and FRED pattern gives the new boutique the label’s signature charm.
The maritime theme continues in the boutique’s second space, which is decorated with designs inspired by sailboat ropes.
In the store’s final space, there is a sunset-inspired installation infused with shards of gold created by a mosaic artist.

At the new boutique, customers will be able to experience each of the maison’s signature high jewellery collections, namely Force 10, Chance Infinie, Pretty Woman, as well as the Riviera and Par Amour.

Three new restaurants were also added to Michelin’s Bid Gourmand category, which awards restaurants which it deems to be of a high standard and good value for money. In addition to previous winners, Dubai restaurants 21 Grams, 3Fils and Aamara joined the official list.

Natalie Portman presented the awards for the 2023 edition of the Trophée Chopard awards at Cannes Film Festival this week.
Actress Naomi Ackie and actor Daryl McCormack were tapped for the esteemed award, which was presented during an official dinner held at the Carlton Beach Club.

The winners: actress Naomi Ackie and actor Daryl McCormack
Created in 2001 by the co-president of Chopard, Caroline Scheufele, the Trophée Chopard honours each year two rising talents in the world of film acting.
Following on from the dinner, French singer and song-writer Juliette Armanet graced the audience with a performance, covering an interpretation of her famous soundtracks ‘Boum boum baby’, ‘L’amour en solitaire’, ‘A la folie’, ‘Le dernier jour du disco’ and ‘Qu’importe’.
Commenting on the Trophée Chopard, Caroline Scheufele said: “Chopard is a firm believer in perpetuating the artistic professions cultivated in our workshops as is evidenced by our focus on training. It was therefore only natural to extend our concern for transmission to our commitment to cinema. The Trophée Chopard enables us to draw attention to an actress and an actor who deserve to gain recognition in their field so as to launch their career. Laureates of this distinction have consistently confirmed the hopes placed in them.”

The Chopard-designed trophies
The trophy – a ribbon of silver film covered in gold – was designed by Caroline Scheufele herself. Like the Palme d’Or and all the trophies awarded at the closing ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival, it is made by Chopard’s jewellery artisans in its workshops.
Nearly two years ago on 15 August 2021, the lives of women in Afghanistan changed over night.
On that late summer day, the Taliban took control of the capital city, Kabul, and with it removed the rights of women to work in public office and the judiciary, closed a large number of schools, banned women from working in many fields and from entering many public spaces, such as amusement parks and gyms.
“All over the country, women report feeling invisible, isolated, suffocated, living in prison-like conditions,” said a recent UN report on the situation in Afghanistan.
It’s the dire situation on the ground for women across the country, which led Oscar-winning actress and producer Jennifer Lawrence to seek out female Afghan critically acclaimed documentary maker Sahra Mani, to develop a film project which looked at the lives of women in the country.
The result was “Bread and Roses”, a documentary which follows three Afghan women and their experience in the country following the events of 2021. The project was funded by Excellent Cadaver, the production company co-owned by Lawrence and fellow producer and friend Jusine Ciarrocchi. “This documentary was born out of emotion and necessity,” Lawrence told the BBC. “They currently have no autonomy within their country. It is so important for them to be given the opportunity to document their own story, in their own way.”
Mani is no stranger to pushing boundaries with her work, prior to the project she created the documentary “A Thousand Girls Like Me”, a film which tells the story of a 23-year-old Afghan woman, who goes on national TV to expose the abuse she has suffered from her father, after the police and her family ignored her pleas for help.
Lawrence and Ciarrocchi are hopeful that the film will receive worldwide distribution. All women featured in the documentary are now safely out of Afghanistan.

The late, great Karl Lagerfeld was not someone who did things by halves. In his latter years – when many would happily spend their time retired and playing the occasional game of golf – he not only continued to contribute to some of the leading fashion houses of the world, but also had one final project he was working on – the world’s first and only Karl Lagerfeld hotel.
Lagerfeld spent years meticulously developing the design of the property which is set to open next month in the autonomous region of Macau, China.

The library, inspired by Lagerfeld’s home in Paris
The new property – dubbed The Karl Lagerfeld Macau – will be home to 271 rooms, and feature a book lounge, with more than 4,000 books inspired by Lagerfeld’s own library in Paris. Other key features include a restaurant by renowned chef Jose Avillez, and a spar with both indoor and outdoor pools.

As one would imagine, equal care has been shown in the thoughtful decor throughout the property, with unique artworks commissioned by Dutch artist Marcel Wanders and French artist Jean-Michel Othoniel.

Chinese influence can also be seen through many of the details in the new hotel. Such as the custom headboards in each of the rooms and suites, inspired by auspicious Chinese coins as well as decorative porcelain vases which were handmade in the Chinese region of Jingdezhen.

American humanitarian, filmmaker and actress Angelina Jolie is set to add another string to her bow, with the launch of her new company, called Atelier Jolie.
Discussing the launch on her new online platform, Jolie said that the new company will connect customers directly to emerging designers and master artisans, so that individuals can design their own clothes.
Jolie said she wants to join those who are “democratising the fashion industry”, and will also support the process with sustainable resources, “making use of curated dead stock and vintage materials to create one-of-a-kind pieces that embody personal creativity and purpose.”

In a statement on the new launch, Jolie posed the question: “Everyone can create. Why then do we covet designer labels? Why simply buy the design of another person, when you can create yourself?”
“I am building a place for creative people to collaborate with a skilled and diverse family of expert tailors, pattern makers and artisans from around the world. A place to have fun. To create your own designs with freedom,” she continued.
According to the Atelier Jolie Instagram page, the new company will officially launch in Autumn 2023.
Seoul cemented its place as the current darling of the fashion world this week, when Gucci descended upon the South Korean capital to showcase the house’s Cruise 2024 collection.
The show was an ode to Seoul’s eclectic street style and wider Korean culture which has infiltrated the global scene (a trend known as the Korean Wave) and has seen the meteoric rise of K-Pop as well as the international success of Oscar-winning movie Parasite and viral Netflix show Squid Games over recent years.

The popular South Korean landmark – the Gyeongbokgung Palace – usually known for being crammed with tourists, was transformed to serve as the backdrop for the new collection through sleek neutral runways and muted lighting.

The set design put focus on the architecture of the historic building, and its contrast with the futuristic city skyline in the distance – a subtle nod to the dialogue between heritage and modernity within the show.

Throughout the collection there were some obvious references to the country’s rising international cultural capital (the Parasite soundtrack was chosen to accompany the show, for example) whilst elsewhere the name of the palace was brazenly written across the backs of T-shirts.

Meanwhile, there were some nostalgic references to the Gucci of the late 90s and 2010s – with shapes from the former and colourways inspired by the latter decade. As the last show before new creative director Sabato De Sarno takes the helm in September, it seems somewhat apt that the team were looking back, at the same time as looking forward to the futuristic city of Seoul for this collection.

In further proof of Seoul’s new social currency, the Gucci show arrived just weeks after Louis Vuitton’s own debut in the city. It’s no coincidence that luxury houses are honing in on this previously lesser-known Asian capital. The amount South Koreans spent on luxury products doubled in late 2022, putting the country in the number one spot for luxury spend per capita in the world.

Regardless, however, of the business acumen behind the luxury world’s eye on South Korea, in terms of creative sensibilities, the label’s Cruise 2024 collection certainly proved that the house of Gucci still has Seoul.

The first-ever JC Biver prototype went on sale in Geneva this week for a record-breaking AED 4.1 million (CHF 1 million) this week.
It set the record purchase for a first watch by a new watch brand. The prototype is currently considerably rare too, as the manufacturer has not even started production.
The design of the timepiece includes a tourbillon minute repeater carillon, in titanium, a unique piece with a silvered obsidian stone dial. The watch has a unique story too, as it was made for Jean-Claude Biver by his son and his team, marking the start of the production of their watches.
The auction for the timepiece was led by Aurel Bacs, in a pavilion set up by Phillips, in the grounds of the historic property Hotel La Réserve, set on the shore of Lake Geneva.
Following a tense 15 minutes of bidding – which saw collectors from three continents vie for the watch – an American collector won the sale.

Along with the timepiece, the winner also received a congratulatory gift from Jean-Claude Biver and his son Pierre Biver: a bottle of 1949 Château d’Yquem from JC Biver’s private collection and two kilos of his mountain cheese.
Production of their first three models (in pink gold, titanium, and two-tone skeleton) has just begun, with the first deliveries scheduled for September 2023.
Jean-Claude Biver spent 50 years in the watchmaking industry prior to establishing his new maison two months ago with his son, 23-year-old Pierre Biver, who is also a passionate watch collector.

The 16th awards ceremony for the Cartier Women’s Initiative was held in Paris on Friday, under the theme “Forces for Good.”
The event celebrated pioneering businesswomen and changemakers from all corners of the globe, including a slew of accolades for 32 women of note from each continent.
Setting the tone for the evening, British-Lebanese human rights lawyer and activist, Amal Clooney, gave an inspiring speech on the advancement of women’s rights.

“Throughout my career as a lawyer, I have sought to advance women’s rights,” she said.
“It seems pretty obvious that this is a worthy area of focus. Whether you believe in human rights, or just prosperity, it is a good idea to try to unshackle half the population of the world. The latest data shows that women’s economic parity would add $12 trillion to the global economy,” Clooney continued.
She went on to celebrate the women gathered for the event: “In this room we have some amazing women…These are all people changing systems, one project at a time. People who are not satisfied with the status quo and who are determined to scale the impact they’ve already had,” she concluded.
The evening saw talks from several thought leaders, including French actress Melanie Laurent on the importance of sustainable thinking and Black-ish star Yara Shahidi who discussed how her parents inspired her to become an activist.

With the Cannes Film Festival about to start and the summer just around the corner, we explore one of Europe’s most desired destinations, the French Riviera.
Writers, artists and socialites have long been drawn to the French Riviera, bewitched by its light, beauty and taste for good living. From the Roaring Twenties, the coast became a place where aristocracy and social climbers converged with some of the greatest creative minds of the past 100 years. No more was this true than in the early 20th century when Pablo Picasso, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Ernest Hemingway (to name a few) met and stayed on the Cote d’Azur. Some of the greats met to share ideas, stories, and party late into the night at the many avant-garde hotspots along the coast.
It’s also a place that fed their genius too – with Picasso notably creating some of his best pottery works at Vallauris along the coast. Luckily for 21st travellers, many of the great properties of the era (many of which were frequented by these elites) are still operating today, standing as bastions of the incredible late 19th-century and early 20th-century architecture along the coastline. Here are some of the highlights and best spots to stay while travelling along France’s most popular shore.
Hôtel Belles Rives, Juan-Les-Pins

Hôtel Belles Rives
Leading the way for luxury-meets-literary history is the Hôtel Belles Rives. Situated in Juan-Les-Pins (the well-heeled district located west of Antibes), the hotel is the former residence of F. Scott Fitzgerald, and also the location where he penned his famous novel “Tender is the Night”. Step back in time to the world of the fabulous 1920s, taking in the original interior design elements and curated artwork in the hotel’s lobby.

Hôtel Belles Rives
A must-visit while staying at the property is the Michelin-starred restaurant, La Passagère, led by Aurélien Véquaud, serving up delightful French Mediterranean cuisine. In the evening, take in the recently renovated Bar Fitzgerald, which reopened in April 2023, with a live pianist playing music each evening and a menu curated by Véquaud. The hotel is also home to a fabulous waterfront beach club and exquisite spa to allow you to fully relax and soak in the atmosphere of the relaxed Mediterranean surroundings.
Hôtel Martinez, Cannes

Hôtel Martinez
First opening in 1929, the Hôtel Martinez is situated amongst the luxury boutiques of Cannes’ popular Promenade de la Croisette and offers cascading views of the city’s waterfront. During the annual Cannes Film Festival which takes place this month, it’s a popular spot for film stars and red-carpet guests to stay due to its grandeur, elegance and central location.

Hôtel Martinez
It is also one of the larger luxury properties along the French Riviera, home to more than 400 rooms and around 100 bespoke suites. The hotel’s two Michelin star La Palme d’Or restaurant (named after the most prestigious prize at the Cannes Film Festival) serves up delectable French Mediterranean fusion food.
Hôtel de Paris, Monte-Carlo

Unquestionably one of the most beautiful and historic properties along the Cote d’Azur, the Hôtel de Paris, Monte-Carlo is located in Monaco’s famous Casino Square. The hotel is a food lover’s dream, being home to four leading restaurants in the city, including the three Michelin star Le Louis XV – Alain Ducasse and the one Michelin star. The latter is perched at the top of the hotel and offers some of the best views of Monaco’s famous harbour and the palaces of the Grimaldi royal family on the facing hilltop.

Hôtel de Paris
Built in 1864, the architecture and interiors pay homage to classic design from the era, while remaining competitive in terms of amenities and service, due to several inspired renovations over the years. The hotel is also one of the best places in the city to people-watch and be seen in Monaco, with both royals and celebrities regularly staying at this inspired property.
Hôtel Juana, Juan-Les-Pins

Hôtel Juana
Over the years, a slew of famous names have stayed at this delightful 1930s Art Deco property. Some of the impressive people on the original guest list of the hotel include Winston Churchill, Wallis Simpson, Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald. Known as a shining star of the Jazz Age, the hotel still draws well-known celebrities and musicians during the annual Antibes Juan-les-Pins Jazz Festival, which takes place over the summer months.

PASEO at Hôtel Juana
The property also comes with idyllic Mediterranean Sea views, as well as of the Lérins Islands and the Massif de l’Esterel mountain range. When staying at the hotel take the time to enjoy a leisurely meal at the property’s fabulous new restaurant concept, PASEO. The menu is inspired by the flavours of Provence and also has local touches with the interiors throughout. South of France natives Arnaud Larguier and Samantha Messens designed the restaurant, taking inspiration from La Pinède, a pine grove at the heart of Juan-les-Pins.
The Maybourne Riviera, Roquebrune-Cap-Martin

The Maybourne Riviera
One of the newer properties on the list, the Maybourne Riviera, is situated on the site of the former Vista Palace, which saw guests including Coco Chanel, Pablo Picasso and Le Corbusier flock to its impressive location. Nestled on the cliffs the property offers panoramic breathtaking views of Italy, Monaco, and the French coastline far below. The property is a striking celebration of Modernist architecture and interior design (as well as being a popular party spot for the nearby Monégasque looking to escape the city).

The property is also a celebration of both local and international art, with more than 1,000 works across the hotel.
