Elie Saab Debuts Elie Saab Villas in Marbella, Spain

Elie Saab has unveiled the brand’s first ever residence in Spain. The impressive Elie Saab Villas are located in Marbella on the Spanish coast and feature breathtaking panoramic views, surrounded by lush vegetation.

In partnership with Urbania, one of the country’s leading developers,  the Elie Saab villas will have the unrivalled aesthetic touch of Elie Saab’s exceptionally crafted interior design using exclusive pieces from the Elie Saab Maison collection.

The villas will be part of a high-security gated community with stunning outdoor areas. Each villa will occupy a total area of approximately 2,000 square metres. They will be home to an infinity pool from which to enjoy the unlimited view of the sea embracing the sky alongside gardens created in harmony with the surrounding nature and two lounges, one of which is equipped with an elegant and cosy fireplace.

Elie Saab Jr, CEO of ELIE SAAB Group, commented: “We are glad to start this new adventure alongside Urbania, a prestigious partner with great experience. Marbella is an evocative location, in which ELIE SAAB arrives with a design that reflects the peculiarities of the location, adapting to its characteristics, responding to the needs of an international clientele that wants something special, unique, but that lives in harmony with the environment. This is one of the strengths of our real estate projects: enhancing the beauty of the places where we arrive and translating the concept of well-being, according to the principles that have always inspired ELIE SAAB creations.”

The interiors are distinguished by the refined elegance, grace and balance of forms and materials, capable of immediately transferring, at first glance, the ideal of beauty proposed by the Brand. Special attention has been given to the finishes, delivering an exceptional level of quality, aesthetic and tactical performance in pure Elie Saab style.

An elevator connects the different floors, from the basement to the top floor, which houses four to five, bedrooms all equipped with an ensuite bathroom and a spacious “walk-in” wardrobe. The Elie Saab Maison furniture pieces are in harmony with the generously sized spaces, instantly conveying a sense of balance, peace and at the same time practicality and functionality. The colour palette proposes delicate shades of cream and grey enhancing the brightness of the rooms, indulging in the natural light that filters through the large glass surfaces, which frame the beauty of Marbella.

Tomas Gasset, CEO of Urbania said: “It has been clear to us for a long time that the international clientele we address is looking for something even more exclusive and distinctive. Our clients are increasingly knowledgeable, sophisticated, and in need of designs in which they can recognize themselves deeply. It is an honour for Urbania to have formed an alliance with such a prestigious Brand as ELIE SAAB. We are impressed by his stylistic ideal, his concept of elegance and the way these are transferred into his creations. His values are our values. The goal, for both of us, is to create a design that is truly iconic.”

Zenith and Fulsap Create a Limited Edition Collection

Zenith has partnered with skiwear brand Fusalp on an exclusive capsule collection.

Highlighting a shared passion for technical innovation and contemporary design the limited edition collection combines the historical know-how of the two brands to produce two bespoke watches and a contemporary ready-to-wear offering. The capsule coincides with the 70th anniversary of the French iconic luxury ski and ready-to-wear brand.

The Zenith DEFY Classic Skeleton Fusalp watched offers new depth to the DEFY line. Designed with a black or white ceramic case the DEFY Classic Skeleton Fusalp features a new open dial. Zenith worked with Fusalp to develop this new open dial that combines the two universes of the brands, by retaining the signature five-pointed star of the Manufacture while incorporating a snowflake into its design. The dial is full of depth and contrast, highlighted by a rose gold-coloured lower open layer and surrounded by a ring in the French tricolour tones of blue, red and white, a nod to the tailor’s French origin and a recurring design element in its sought-after creations.

The rubber strap has also been designed to incorporate elements inspired by the clothing capsule collection designed by Fusalp exclusively for this collaboration. As durable as it is stylish, the rubber features a fabric-like structure, featuring a raised motif consisting of concentric rectangles providing a bold graphical element in line with the open dial.

Zenith CEO Julien Tornare said of the collaboration, “This is an exciting new kind of partnership for Zenith, and one that is very close to our hearts. More than just a fashion House, Fusalp are innovators. Their never-ending quest to produce highly technical yet fashionable clothing is something that Zenith totally relates to.”

The Fulsalp ready-to-wear collection is a capsule offering of skiwear for men and women designed with the same ethos as the watches. The designs are effortlessly chic, taking on a couture look while boasting technical materials, without compromising on performance and freedom of movement.

The Fusalp x Zenith ski jackets feature a special “storm cuff” sleeve with a zippered opening, designed to be able to comfortably wear and view your watch between the outer shell layer and the soft, fine knit fabric underneath that’s adorned with the blue, white and red stripes, representing Fusalp’s French heritage.

Fusalp CEO Alexandre Fauvet added, “Fusalp and Zenith have respectively revolutionized their industries. The mastery of time and movement, embodied by Zenith, as inventor of the world’s first automatic chronograph movement in 1969. Two years earlier Fusalp invented the first competition ski suit, with France’s national ski team going on to win seven gold medals at the Portillo Alpine World Championships in 1966. These feats shape Fusalp and Zenith as pioneers, who nurture the precision for exceptional products, which are designed with refined modernity, accuracy and craftsmanship.’’

Dior Revives Princess Diana’s Iconic Handbag

Dior is reviving the iconic mini Lady Dior carried by Lady Diana for the 1996 Met Gala.

The Lady was named after Princess Diana after she visited Paris for the opening of the Paul Cézanne retrospective at the Grand Palais. Diana wore the bag on several occasions and it soon took her name to be known as the Lady Dior.

The bag has since become an icon of the house, being reinvented in many ways over the years. This however is the first time the exact bag carried by Diana herself has been reinvented.

The bag has been specially re-edited in a limited edition number of pieces. Celebrating the virtuoso skills of the Dior ateliers, the essential piece is brought to life in Italy.

Its leather, delicately stitched with the emblematic cannage, enhances its architectural lines, while each detail, conceived with infinite meticulousness, marks its uniqueness, such as the “DIOR” charms – a tribute to the magical thinking of the founding couturier – which punctuate it with a finishing touch of refinement.

The Truth About Facial Injectables

As we age and the production of the ‘scaffolding’ proteins within our skin starts to reduce. The effects are multiple: the skin experiences laxity, which in turn means that wrinkles are more visible and there is also significant volume loss.

In addition, there is a negative impact on the skin’s appearance in terms of tone and texture. But thankfully, there are a range of injectable treatments that can not only keep these signs of ageing at bay but actually stimulate the production of collagen and elastin to offer skin rejuvenation, leading to increased firmness, improved texture, tone and elasticity and enhanced radiance.

We sat down with Dr Dany Kayle, Founder of Dr Kayle Aesthetic Clinic, which was named Best Aesthetic Clinic in the GCC in February this year, to get the lowdown on injectables and find out why you should never get a permanent filler.

Botox

This is a drug that is injected into the muscle itself to paralyze it with the consequence that it diminishes the wrinkles on the skin that overlies that specific muscle. It’s mainly used to soften lines and does this to great effect. In recent years, to avoid the frozen look of the past, Baby Botox has become increasingly popular. This treatment uses tiny doses of Botox. The result is an ‘au natural look, which is very subtle and ensures that you look refreshed and rejuvenated. You can even take it one step further – for example, if the treatment is combined with micro-injections of skin boosters made of antioxidants, vitamins, and hyaluronic acid – to improve, maintain, and protect the skin of the face.

Fillers

Fillers have multiple uses. In the face, they can be used to improve the area around the mouth and enhance the cheeks and the jawline’s definition. The most important thing when it comes to fillers is that you take a slow and steady approach. The most successful filler treatments are when a patient improves on their look while maintaining harmony among the different structures of the face. I always recommend to my patients to place a small amount of filler and then increase it, if required, in subsequent appointments, so the results are as natural as possible.

Temporary fillers are made of crosslinked hyaluronic acid and serve to give volume to the area into which they are injected. These can be used in a very controlled way and are absorbed completely by the body within six to eight months. Most importantly, if the patient doesn’t like the outcome, they can be dissolved using a special enzyme, hyaluronidase.

There are also long-lasting fillers comprising substances such as polylactic acid. This will make the filler last longer because it can’t be absorbed by the body and its role is to stimulate collagen production. I would never, however, advocate their use as once injected, there is no way to remove them or to reduce their volume smoothly and non-invasively.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that there is another alternative to synthetic products, which is their own fat. Amongst experts, fat is the Rolls-Royce of fillers: it is longer lasting, and patients can never react negatively to it as it is their own fat.  Fat can be harvested using a small syringe from an area of excess fat in the patient and reused as filler for the same patient. You can upgrade this treatment by transferring stem cells at the same time. This will improve further the area treated and give the face an additional glow on top of volume replenishment.

All fillers have some possible complications. These include infection, hematoma (blood under the skin) and to a lesser extent skin necrosis, which is the death of an area of the skin due to blockage of the artery feeding that area by the filler. The most important sign of the problem will be skin discolouration, happening even in an area remote from the injection site, as well as issues relating to vision.

It is vital that fillers are only done by experienced plastic surgeons or dermatologists as otherwise, you risk not only a poor result but severe and sometimes irreversible complications.

Profhilo

Derived from 100% pure non-crosslinked hyaluronic acid, Profhilo is a completely natural injectable that helps to improve the quality of the skin.  As we age, skin becomes dull, dry and lacklustre. Profhilo is a treatment that will tackle these problems through effective skin bio-remodelling in just two sessions at a four-week interval and then one maintenance session twice a year.

Specifically targeting a two-centimetre radius of the injection site, there are just five injection points on each side of the face to ensure optimal distribution and absorption of the slow-release Hyaluronic Acid formula.

Unlike fillers, it works to improve the quality of the tissue itself rather than a mere volume replenishment.  By injecting into specific anatomical points it can remodel and enhance the skin quality, as well as moisturise and rejuvenate facial skin, thereby restoring its glow and firmness. In essence, this injectable treatment stimulates the production of collagen and elastin to offer skin rejuvenation. Results include increased firmness, improved texture, tone and elasticity and enhanced radiance, with the effects lasting up to 6 months.

One of Profhilo’s biggest advantages is that it distributes smoothly and evenly without the formation of any lumps – a potential risk with traditional fillers. This allows it to be used on areas which are difficult to treat with traditional fillers, such as the neck and forehead but it can also be used for the décolletage, hands, arms, knees and abdomen area.

Profhilo can be used as a stand-alone treatment if the target is to achieve a healthier appearance of the skin, enhance hydration and see a mild lifting effect. However, if volume loss or skin laxity is already advanced, then other modalities such as fillers or energy-based treatments can be done in conjunction with Profhilo.

An enlarged lower intake improves airflow, to cool the F-PACE SVR’s 550PS powertrain. While the new-look design delivers performance benefits, it also provides a more athletic appearance by visually lowering the front of the vehicle.  New diagonal blades below the lower bumper, shaped in partnership with the SV aerodynamics team, ensure every design detail has a functional purpose, while also helping to visually plant the F-PACE SVR closer to the road.

At the front of the car, the super-slim all-LED quad headlights feature a ‘Double J’ Daytime Running Light (DRL) with the option of Pixel LED technology for increased resolution and brightness. Adaptive Driving Beam capability evaluates the road ahead and automatically adapts the high beam light to mask oncoming traffic or traffic signs. This specialised system can create varying light beam patterns by selecting different LED segments to optimise visibility and minimise the risk of distracting other drivers. New slimline rear lights feature Jaguar’s trademark double chicane graphic which accentuates the width of the vehicle. The new look is completed with the addition of the updated SVR logo.

The F-PACE SVR features large 22-inch forged alloy wheels with a five-spoke design finished in gloss black with satin grey inserts. The new SVR logo is printed on the wheel for a stylish finish.

Interior

The sleek interior of the F-PACE SVR features a new refined design with luxurious materials to elevate the appearance and feel. Luxurious leather seats once again combine sports inspirations with and chic design. Seat and door inserts are finished in Alcantara, with elements such as the central cubby and leather midroll wrapped in luxurious Windsor leather. The seats feature heritage logo-inspired diamond embroidery across the front shoulder section, and features a unique perforation across the backrest, while the same pattern is used on the leather on the seatbacks. An embossed SVR logo on the headrests adds a final touch. The outer rim of the bespoke SVR split-rim steering wheel wears the same leather finish, while the inside of the wheel features a unique Mars Red SVR stitch detail. Tactile zinc-alloy shift paddles provide heightened driver engagement when making manual gear changes.

The HD Interactive Driver Display is wrapped in Alcantara with ebony stitching, while aluminium patterned finishers feature as standard with open-pore carbon fibre available as an option. The car’s technology system is of the highest standard with a new sporty centre console, incorporating an optional wireless device charger and improved console stowage. This is seamlessly integrated through a centrally-mounted 11.4-inch curved-glass HD touchscreen, which sits within an elegant magnesium alloy casing and provides access to the intuitive new Pivi Pro infotainment.

A series of advanced technologies ensure the health and wellbeing of all occupants. Cabin Air Ionisation improves interior air quality through Nanoe technology, which removes allergens and unpleasant odours. The system now also features PM2.5 filtration, which captures ultra-fine particles to improve occupant health and wellbeing. Customers activate the system simply by pressing the ‘Purify’ button within the infotainment.

Cutting-Edge Technology

The F-PACE SVR features Jaguar’s advanced Electronic Vehicle Architecture, with a range of new technologies to ensure this vehicle is ahead of the game with every detail. The latest Pivi Pro infotainment technology is accessed through the all-new 11.4-inch curved glass HD touchscreen, meaning enhanced clarity, a larger and brighter display and a simplified menu structure that allows drivers to access or view up to 90 per cent of common tasks from the homescreen in two taps or less, keeping both safety and simplicity in mind.

The system is also compatible with Apple CarPlay® as standard and allows customers to connect two phones simultaneously via Bluetooth. Optional wireless device charging with phone signal booster allows occupants to fast charge their compatible smartphone – perfect for long journeys. The collection of new convenience technologies includes Software-Over-The-Air (SOTA) capability, which ensures the performance SUV is always using the latest software, meaning that the technology automatically updates without the need to visit retailers to receive software updates for the vehicle.

The new F-PACE SVR also benefits from a selection of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. This includes the Clear Exit Monitor, which alerts both front and rear occupants to the presence of an approaching car or cyclist when exiting the vehicle. Adaptive Cruise Control automatically maintains a set distance from the vehicle in front.

Jaguar’s latest 3D Surround Camera technology delivers advanced 3D functionality using the latest camera technology to deliver more detail and a choice of real-time viewing when manoeuvring the vehicle. The selection of settings includes Junction View, 3D Perspective View, and ClearSight Plan View.

In conclusion, the high-performance design is a perfect way of combining the finest in motorsport with luxury, comfort and delivery for all. Now available across the Middle East.

Hermès Brings Its Petit H Souk to Dubai

Hermès is celebrating the best of craftsmanship and creativity with its Petit h Souk in Dubai.

Located at the Maison’s Dubai Mall store the workshop brings life and meaning to unique, hybrid objects with a playful dialogue between object creation, the reuse of materials, and sustainability.

Petit h was established in 2010 under the creative direction of Godefroy de Virieu to showcase the art of creation. Here creation takes place in reverse because work here does not start with a preconceived idea or grand design, but with materials such as leather, silk, crystal and porcelain for which the other métiers have no further use, and with which artisans, artists and designers improvise by combining, assembling and altering them in a thousand and one ways.

The petit h workshop gives life and meaning to unique, hybrid objects whose aesthetics and function are faithful to Hermès’ spirit of ingenuity, high-quality materials and exceptional know-how. Its creations are as surprising as they are fun.

In Dubai, the petit h objects are staged in a space reminiscent of a souk. Designed by Emirati architect and designer Abdalla Almulla, it is infused with the architecture of these traditional places of conviviality and trade.

The earthy tones of its walls and floors and the openwork ceilings help diffuse soft light, minimise exterior heat, and create a welcoming atmosphere where visitors can browse, take their time and chat over tea. The colour palette of the petit h souk reflects the local terracotta, clay, fabric and wood used to construct it.

These materials were worked according to ancestral know-how, echoing the very essence of petit h, where ingenious objects are created from diverse and varied materials in often unusual combinations.

A falcon stand which combines terracotta with leather, porcelain and crystal, and an incense burner consisting of a fine terracotta dish elevated on a green and white crystal base are two examples of vernacular creations that pay homage to Dubai.

The Petit H Souk will run from 11 to 27 November 2022, at Hermès, The Dubai Mall.

What Makes Lab-Grown Diamonds Identical To Their Mined Counterparts

By Basma Chaieri, Founder, Etika Jewels

With the new generation of conscious luxury shoppers, the onset of lab-grown diamonds and precious stones has been well-received globally. Cultured diamonds are chemically and visually identical to their earth-grown counterpart with the sole exception of their originating source. Even experts in the field find it challenging to decipher a mined diamond from the sustainable alternative with the naked eye, loupe, or a microscope. However, like many new discoveries, misconceptions about the process and makeup of the stones still remain, leaving many luxury consumers with mixed viewpoints. Reassuring science-based details bring knowledge to the topic at hand.

A Carbon Copy of Chemical Properties

Engineered using the latest industry technology replicating extreme heat and pressure from the earth’s surfaces, identical chemical structures and properties develop from a diamond seed through two main methods:

  • High-Temperature and High-Pressure (HTHP): high heat and pressure, conditions forcing a diamond crystal to grow.

  • Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD): Microwaves of heat and pressure are used to break down gas molecules from a vacuum chamber. The carbon atoms from the gas remain turning it into a growing diamond.

A diamond, regardless of how it is made, is a solid form of carbon with its atoms arranged in a crystalline structure – a diamond cubic. This organized pattern is the result of extremely high temperatures and pressure, resulting in crystallization. Although development takes place in a controlled lab setting, the result is identical to a mined, pure crystallized carbon. In a less scientific approach, whether you can get ice from a freezer or from a glacier – frozen water is the result, making the place of origin, the difference.

Duplicate Key Physical Properties

Hardness and Density: A gemstone’s durability and scratch resistance are determined by its ranking on the industry’s profoundly used Mohs scale of mineral hardness. Diamonds are notorious for holding a score of 10, the highest making them the hardest and most durable mineral. The Mohs scale and ranking process apply to mined and lab-grown diamonds equally.

Reflection and Dispersion: Along with a high reflection index, diamonds disperse and refract light visually. This is more commonly expressed as ‘fire’ and ‘brilliance,’ and is applicable to both mined and lab-made diamonds.

Identical Grading and Certification

Anyone who’s purchased a diamond or done some research knows the 4Cs – Colour, Cut, Clarity, and Carat, the universally approved system of diamond quality evaluation. Both lab-grown and mined diamonds undergo the same rigorous grading process evaluating the four aforementioned parameters. A perfectly cut and internally flawless diamond is expensive, whether traditional or lab-made.

Similar to natural diamonds, lab-created diamonds have varying amounts of internal flaws or ‘inclusions,’ affecting their grading. These inclusions result from chemical elements entering the dense structure of the strong crystalline bonds across both types of diamonds affecting the diamond’s clarity and colour. Both the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the International Gemological Institute (IGI), prominent industry organisations that assess and grade mined and lab-grown diamonds.

Equivalent or Higher grade for Colour

Industry experts have cited that lab-grown diamonds might be higher in quality even if the chemical structure is the same. Naturally, the earth holds additional elements and due to this, mined diamonds are more suspectable to traces of nitrogen, which is responsible for a yellowish tint in many mined diamonds. On the other hand, lab-made diamonds, especially those created with the Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) method contain hardly any nitrogen impurities in their structure and therefore are colourless. They are categorized as Type IIa diamonds, the purest, and only two percent (2%) are formed from natural mining. In most cases, lab-grown diamonds are not only identical but also better in quality than the majority of their mined counterparts, according to the official grading system.

The Outcome: Identical Precious Stones with Different Origins

Cultured gems possess the same chemical and physical properties making them indistinguishable to the naked eye, equally strong, and scratch-proof, and undergo the same grading protocol.

While laboratories and industry associations with state-of-the-art equipment, like IGI or GAI, can differentiate, the two both gravitate to end-consumers with their allure and sparkle.

The only differentiating factor is the source and scientific method to produce a diamond in a sustainable fashion and without political or social conflict.

A certified diamond grader from IGI, Basma Chaieri, has always had a passion for science and believes in its ability to establish facts. Combining her digital marketing experience, technical expertise, and conscious mindset, she launched Etika Jewels in 2022 to cater to the GCC’s growing demand for ethical and mindful fine jewellery options and fulfil a personal passion.

Louis Vuitton Presents the Artycapucines Project

Louis Vuitton presents the fourth edition of its art project, reinventing the iconic Capucines bag.

Louis Vuitton celebrates its iconic Capucines bag through an artistic collaboration. In the fourth wave of Artycapucines, the brand collaborates with six contemporary artists who were invited to create their own version of the Capucines. The six artists were given complete creativity and freedom to reinterpret the bag in a way that expresses their style and personality and captures the femininity, modernity and timelessness of the bag. Each bag in the exclusive collection will be limited to 200 pieces and will be available in Louis Vuitton stores worldwide. Turn the page to discover more about the artists and their unique designs.

Amélie Bertrand

Amélie Bertrand by Christophe Coënon

Known for her bright and bold imagery, French contemporary artist Amélie Bertrand combines abstract motifs of chains, camouflage, tiles and tropical plants, all in bright and gradated colours. Combining nature with fantasy, she creates images that feature almost mystical landscapes. Her design for the Artycapucines collections features a rainbow of colour and a phosphorescent handle.

“I immediately thought, a bag’s an object, so let’s treat it as a sculptural work.” She explained. “This made me consider how the light would hit its surfaces, and how the bag itself would throw light back, perhaps onto the owner’s clothes. I wanted a bag that illuminated the night, like a nightclubbing bag, or like those scooters that people “pimp” using those bright artificial-light panels. You could say I wanted to pimp my bag! The bag’s phosphorescent handle and surface components “charge up” using daylight in order to lighten the night, evoking the internal light that a computer emits.”

She explains the process of working with Louis Vuitton on this project: “It was like a highly creative laboratory. The process itself mirrors my own work: the gradual adding of different layers, finding the best possible application of those elements to the surface. As an artist you can be quite free form, whereas the Louis Vuitton artisans are more structured, so we pushed each other in different directions and landed on a final product that feels unexpected and exciting.”

Park Seo-Bo

Park Seo-Bo by Jaehoon Kim

Park Seo-Bo is one of South Korea’s most celebrated artists. He is the founder of Dansaekhwa, a movement that began in the early 1970s and altered the course of Korean art with its ideas of the purposelessness of actions and the spiritual benefits of endless repetition. In the late 1960s, Park began working on his ongoing Écriture series, originally composed of pencil lines drawn on paint-covered canvas. Since the early 1980s, the work has used the specific properties of Korean Hanji paper, which Park soaks for weeks, applies to canvas, and works on in pencil and acrylic paint. He considers his painting method as a creative meditative exercise.

His now iconic methods are used as the inspiration for his take on the Louis Vuitton icon for which he bases the design on a red painting of his. He explains: “When I later started using colours in my painting, I did so by searching for “natural colour” instead of “ideological colour”. One time, I was looking at a valley by Mount Bandai. The valley was aligned with the sun, so it appeared to be almost neon red. The colour was so intense that it felt like I was looking at a flame that was chasing me to my death. That moment acted as a reminder that I’m only a tiny being in front of the vastness of nature. As the wind blew the clouds and the sunlight shone, one side of the valley remained neon red, while the other side became shaded and much darker. I thought I should paint this “harmony of nature”; my red painting came from this moment – from nature.”

The artist enlisted the help of his grandson a fashion graduate in order to adapt his work for the bag. “My talented grandson is a graduate of London College of Fashion, and he was instrumental in adapting my painting to the Artycapucines’ bag design. When I received the first prototypes, I was in awe of the incredible leather craftsmanship, achieved by the hands of Louis Vuitton’s artisans. Honestly, I think it is impossible not to respect Louis Vuitton for its level of savoir-faire.” He continues; “ultimately, I think this bag collabo- ration and my original artwork should be exhibited together, as a whole, as one object.”

Peter Marino

Peter Marino by Sean Davidson

Architect Peter Marino founded his New York-based architecture firm in 1978 and has since worked on some of the most recognised architectural projects of the modern day. As a confessed art lover, Marino has commissioned more than 300 site-specific artworks that have been integrated into his architectural designs, and in 2021, he opened the Peter Marino Art Foundation, based in a restored public library in Southampton, New York.

His Artycapucines design is a solid black creation, inspired by a 14th-century Venetian building. “I’m chairman of Venetian Heritage and we were raising funds to restore a 14th-century building in Venice called Scuola Grande San Giovanni Evangelista. One time when I was visiting, I noticed a medieval box near the monumental staircase designed by [Italian architect] Mauro Codussi. This box had straps and a medieval key. I was inspired by these elements, which I translated into this new Artycapucines bag.”

Daniel Buren

Daniel Buren by Christophe Coënon

French artist Daniel Buren has had a career spanning over 60 years. His works explore the relationships between art and its physical and intellectual structures, and our perception of light and space. His works feature graphic lines and often use his now-trademark vertical stripes. Showcasing his works at over 3,000 exhibitions throughout his career Burren has become one of the most successful contemporary artists of his time. ln 2016, he created Observatory of Light at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, a large-scale, in situ work that covered every other panel of the building’s 12 glass “sails” with brightly coloured transparent self-adhesive vinyl sheets, following a rhythm of every 10 glass panels alternating white stripes and empty spaces of 8.7cm each, all the way long.

His Artycapucines designs feature bold colours, graphic lines and his trademark stripes. The unmissable designs are timeless yet modern. “The subject of this work is not a specific space or precise environment, which are usually at the heart of all my work; rather, it’s a fixed object with which I “compose”. The Artycapucines has a really simple design: a trapezoid as a base and the arc of a circle as a handle. Everything starts from there. My initial sketch was rather abstract, but the object’s function was still clear. By making the handle an exact semicircle, and transferring it to the body of the bag itself, two shapes emerged: a trapezoid and a circle.” He said of his creations. “I was so impressed by the Louis Vuitton artisans’ ability to implement such high-quality solutions in such a record time. They constantly amazed me. Just three weeks after showing them my thumbnail sketch, they presented me with a prototype, which became the basis of our shared reflections on improvements.”

Ugo Rondinone

Ugo Rondinone by Sean Davidson

Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone is known for his ability to give new light to the vision of human nature through a wide range of two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects, installations, videos, and performances. His hybridised forms, which borrow from ancient and modern cultural sources alike, exude pathos and humour, going straight to the heart of the most pressing issues of our time, where modernist achievement and archaic expression intersect.

His colourful design for Louis Vuitton is bright, vibrant and joyful and with a clear inspiration taken from the circus. “I knew the bag had to please and chose to use colour as the main attraction.” He said. “So I took two archetypal symbols that I often use in my work: the clown and the rainbow. The clown with its recognisable nonbinary character and outlandish costumes, distinctive make-up, colourful wigs, and exaggerated footwear, is designed to entertain large audiences. In my work, though, I have turned it into a character who doesn’t entertain, but instead just sits in contemplation. The rainbow is a communal archetype of unity and peace, while also referring to the gay-liberation movement. For example, in my first public work, in 1996, I made an illuminated neon rainbow sign that spelled out “Cry Me a River”.”

The artist saw the process as a collaboration between himself and the brand. “The collaboration was amazing. The team at Louis Vuitton’s ateliers really made sense of what I wanted, and then went out of their way to develop the ideas even further, and so create different possibilities. Working with a bag requires an appreciation of the functional “end use” that my artwork never does.” He said.

Kennedy Yanko

Kennedy Yanko by Sean Davidson

American artist Kennedy Yanko offered a more abstract take on the accessory. Her artworks are found in metal and “paint skin”, a material she makes by pouring large amounts of paint, letting it dry, and using the sheet-like form to create new sculptural compositions. The flowing, yet solid result is described by the artist as an “abstract expressionist-surrealist work with an anthropomorphic quality”.

By replicating the “paint skin’ in her design, the Capucines bag is giving an extraordinarily unique identity. “When the Louis Vuitton team first came in, I shared an idea of what I wanted to do. The next time I saw them they presented me with so many different options to choose from. It really expanded my mind of what this bag could be. Once we’d figured out the colours and style and how to create the bag itself, I was particularly interested in making something that was functional. I wanted a bag that you could use at any event and with any outfit; for example, the handle comes off, and there’s a pouch underneath it, so you can slide your hand and then carry the bag as a clutch.”

“They [the Louis Vuitton team] were super experimental about recreating my paint-skin effect; it actually incorporates a rusting process that takes place using bacteria. They also experimented with over 20 different colour samples, using a spectrometer to get the exact shade. It was an intensive process, which I enjoyed a lot. It gave me new ideas of how I could sculpturally add volume and texture to my own work using different materials.” The artist spoke of her excitement to see the bag in stores. “I’m excited to see it out in the world, like seeing a lady at the airport who’s chosen to take the bag on a trip with her. You’d never get that with a piece of work on a gallery wall.”

How does it feel to have your work recognised by the FTA Prize?

I feel very proud to be part of this family and proud to represent the MENA region.

It was a beautiful experience and an amazing opportunity to share my work with so many people from the industry.

Tell us about your brand and your journey to where you are today as well as the materials you work with?

Talel is a contemporary luxury brand founded in 2019. The brand offers leather handbags and accessories with a sharp design and a focus on unconventional shapes, considering details and sustainable production.

I personally have more than 10 years of experience in the leather goods industry, all of it accumulated in Paris. Worried about having to do the same work over and over again and needing more freedom and creativity in my work, I took the decision to launch my own brand.

I work a lot with leather. Talel bags are handcrafted with the finest materials and built around the best manufacturing practices, continuing the transmission of specific know-how at every step of the production process.

What can you tell us about your latest collections?

A lot of novelties! A new small leather goods offering and new materials such as fake fur and metallic leathers.

Can you share a little about how the FTA prize is helping emerging designers worldwide?

This is an amazing opportunity for the designers from the MENA region to share their work. There is so much beautiful craftmanship and rich and diverse cultural heritage that is perfectly represented and thanks to this prize and it allows us to share it with the rest of the world. This event has been covered by so many people from the industry: by the judges, by the press, by the influencers, by the stores.. it is a great window, and it will help for sure the designer’s exposure.

What is a message you would send to the organisers and also to the industry in the Middle East?

Thank you Fashion Trust Arabia you are giving a lot of hope and opportunities to Arab designers. It’s a beautiful example of transmission and support that you are giving to young designers like us and we are very grateful for that.

What has been the highlight for you?

To show our work to this incredible panel of judges and board members who took the time to listen to each of us.

Where would you like to see your brand in five years?

I hope to be still there creating and being represented across the MENA region and all over the world.

Tell us about your creative process?

There is no compromise in my creative process! I just want to express myself and my mission is to propose a creative model, not a business model. I have this irrepressible desire for freedom in my work, at the service of a generation that sets its own rules.

What’s the biggest challenge you face with your own brand?

It’s not an easy thing to create a brand, and this asks for a lot of work and investments. The big challenge is to separate the business side from the personal side.

Where did your passion for design begin?

I have a lot of memories of my mother sewing for me when I was a child, she used to sew a lot and make me custom pieces. That’s how it started. I have always loved handbags. Whenever I had money to treat myself, I preferred to invest in a beautiful accessory, rather than clothes. A bag can tell so much about your personality and what you want to express about yourself.

Who or what inspires you the most?

I greatly admire Martin Margiela, for being avant-garde and unconventional. I like the way he breaks the rules and codes of fashion, transforming, reinterpreting and deconstructing classic wardrobe pieces often with explicit humor and irony. Also, I love that he had never wanted to be a public figure, I love his humility and his discretion. A common point with Azzedine Alaia, in addition to his very known talent.

What is the motto that you live by?

Whatever you decide to do, make sure it will make you happy.
