How To Decorate Your Home This Ramadan

Saudi Arabian homeware brand aura offers top tips for preparing your home for Ramadan.

Ramadan is fast approaching and there is nothing better than immersing yourself in the beautiful ambience of the Holy Month. There are plenty of ways to bring the festive flavour of Ramadan to your home by decorating your space and bringing in the elements of spirituality and tranquillity that the Month of Ramadan represents. Saudi modern home furniture and interior brand, aura, has designed the ultimate guide to ensuring your home perfectly captures this magical spirit.

Upgrade Your Tablescape

Ramadan encourages families and friends to come together for Iftar or Suhoor and there is one crucial aspect that shouldn’t be overlooked: your table should reflect the season’s aesthetic and leave your guests in complete awe. This Ramadan, aura has introduced three stunning dinnerware ranges – LUNAR, FAMIGLIA, and JAMILAH – along with a range of decorative tabletop essentials in various shapes and geometric patterns. Amp up the “wow factor” and opt for the LUNAR range for the ultimate Ramadan mood.

Designed in collaboration with Saudi-based artist Shaker Kashgari, the range features a symbolic representation of the Lunar cycle throughout Ramadan, enhanced by complementary messaging in a modern calligraphic graffiti style. With a modern, Middle Eastern aesthetic, the range is designed in black and white with tasteful hints of gold. Looking for a more quirky and fun option? aura’s FAMIGLIA dinnerware range, designed by emerging artist Layan Al Hamed, reflects the core family values of coming together during the Holy Month, showcasing quirky yet refined cartoon characters in a black and white colour palette with gold motifs.

Festive Lighting

Lights help to create a festive atmosphere that is in tune with the Holy Month. Incorporating fairy lights, decorative lamps, or even traditional lanterns can add warmth and cheer to your space. Opt for aura’s traditional yet modern TAHIRA candleholders designed by budding product and furniture designer, Andréa Abou-Fadel to give your space the ultimate Ramadan feel.

Design tip: Place large lanterns in corners and small lanterns across your table or as centrepieces. Try to mix and match sets of threes or fives for a playful yet chic aesthetic.

It’s all in the decorative details

When it comes to decorative accessories, get creative and think out of the box. Opt for accents that reflect the aesthetic of the Holy Month whilst also matching your personal taste. Think versatile candle holders, a Medkhana (Arabic for incense burner), as well as gorgeous hanging ornaments that include mini crescents and Arabesque geometric shapes for that much-needed Ramadan aesthetic.

Implement the above tips for the perfect Ramadan aesthetic that leaves you and your guests feeling the spirit all month long.

Aura is located at The Dubai Mall, Mercato Shopping Mall and Al Barsha 1 in Dubai, as well as in Panorama Mall, Riyadh and Red Sea Mall, Jeddah in Saudi Arabia

Meet The Ladies Behind One of the UAE’s Oldest Fashion Labels

Emirati fashion label Frou Frou is combining tradition and modernity to create unique designs for a young generation of women.

Originally established in 2001, Frou Frou is one of the longest standing Emirati fashion brands today. Initially founded by three sisters it began life as the first silk scarf store in Dubai. Dues to the growing demand, the three sisters behind Frou Frou began to introduce silk and taffeta abayas, which became hugely popular with the local community. In 2018, almost 20 years later the founders of Frou Frou decided to pass the family business onto their daughters who have taken the brand to the next level, combining traditional designs with a modern aesthetic to appeal to the next generation. Drawing inspiration from nature and architecture Frou Frou’s designs combine classic silhouettes with a feminine yet modern touch. The label focuses on modest styles with intricate embroidery, evoking a vision of feminine elegance. Here we find out more about the brand with the ladies behind the vision.

Tell us about your latest collection – the inspiration, styles, colour palette etc.?

The Spring/Summer 2022 collection is inspired by a walk in a secret garden and symbolises the mood, colours and patterns that are deeply embedded in this garden. The layers of fauna and flora paved the path to an array of delicate designs, unique floral elements and graceful colours to match the season. The collection features traditional silhouettes that are reimagined from a contemporary angle of long dresses, pleated skirts and sheer coats that are timeless yet elegant.

As a brand how do you put your own twist on classic styles to make them relevant for today’s women?

This is what lies in the heart of Frou Frou. We love working with traditional silhouettes and reimagining them from a contemporary, modern angle. Frou Frou’s signature aesthetic of adding delicate elements such as subtle embellishment, pleated designs and creative belts tie each piece together; making it ideal for the woman of today.

How can this collection be worn over the month of Ramadan?

Each Frou Frou piece can be styled according to each person’s preferences. This season features long dresses with embroidered sleeves which are an ideal style for the warm Ramadan days. A personal favourite is the black sheer abaya with crystal embroidery which I believe is the perfect piece to tie up an Iftar look when styled with kitten heels and jewellery to match. These styles are available at selected retailers across Dubai for everyone to get their Ramadan looks ready.

Are there any particular pieces or styles that you love?

One of my favourite pieces in this collection is a white A-line dress with detachable puff sleeves. This look is further magnified with net details on the sleeves giving it a feminine yet edgy aesthetic.

You are a well-established brand in the region now – how have you seen the landscape of the industry change over the last two decades?

The fashion industry in the region has seen consistent growth with new designers making their mark. I have seen and been a part of this change that shows how Arab designers are extremely talented and have so much to offer to the world.

What would you still like to see in terms of Arab designers being recognised on a global scale?

I would love to see more Arab designers showcasing their designs at fashion weeks around the world and adorned by celebrities; this would show how the designs from this region can be worn by women all across the world.

You are very much a family business, tell us a little about how you balance the work duties between you?

Working with family has its perks as we can bring our strengths to the table. We focus on these and work hard in order to build a successful brand.

How have you as the next generation of the family continued the heritage of the brand but continued to make it relevant for today?

As the brand flowed across generations, we are able to bring new ideas to each collection as we understand what our clients are looking for and what is trending. Translating these elements without losing the essence of Frou Frou is how we continue the heritage while making it relevant for the women of today.

How do you separate work and family life and what is the secret to working with family?

Time management is something that has truly helped us to separate work and family life. We make sure to follow our system of focusing on the brand during work hours and not letting it get in the way of our family time.

The past couple of years have been challenging ones, is there anything you have changed about the business since the beginning of the pandemic?

Challenges are inevitable and COVID was one of the biggest challenges we have faced. We had just expanded our atelier and employed more staff a couple of weeks before COVID hit and this was the main challenge. We had to reconsider several things in the business including the wellbeing of our staff, costs and most importantly how to retain our customers’ satisfaction.

As a family how do you spend your time during Ramadan and the Eid holiday?

Ramadan and Eid are all about gathering with our loved ones. During the day we spend time reflecting spiritually. However, after sunset and Iftar we glam up in our Frou Frou outfits and get ready to meet and gather with our family and friends. Eid is a time for celebration that we spend together with our loved ones and we dress up in our favourite FrouFrou pieces. Each one of us likes to style her outfit in a unique way and we are always eager to see the outcome of each other’s looks.

Who or what inspires your designs?

We are deeply inspired by nature which is translated into our designs. This element of nature is evident through delicate floral details. We also find inspiration in unique and beautiful architecture and this is something that we like to reflect in our designs.

Are there any brands or designers you look up to?

We adore Dior and Chanel’s designs. Their silhouettes, the way the garments are made and their attention to detail is perfect. We also love Loewe for its more casual and young aesthetic.

What can we expect to see from Frou Frou for the rest of the year?

We like to elevate the brand each season. We are working with special fabrics that have been sourced from France to create statement pieces that will help our clients to stand out. Staying true to the Frou Frou aesthetic of classic, timeless and feminine designs with graceful details is something that we like to focus on.

Van Cleef & Arpels Adds Emeralds to Its Frivole Collection

For the first time in the Frivole collection, Van Cleef & Arpels introduces emerald whose deep hue offers luminosity to an exclusive collection of jewels.

Highly symbolic, the vivid colour of this gemstone combines harmoniously with yellow gold on a bracelet, pendant and earrings. Selected by Van Cleef & Arpels’ gemmologists for their intense green colour, emeralds evoke the vitality of a precious green garden interacting with the sunshine gold of the metal.

The hero piece of the collection is the new Frivole ring with its polychromatic floral composition. Five flowers with ruby hearts and three with emerald pistils are subtly placed at different heights to create a bouquet of colourful elegance. Highlighting the iconic style of Van Cleef & Arpels the impression of movement radiates from this unique jewel.

The jewels in this collection have been hand-selected for their beautiful colour and exceptional quality. Special care has been taken in cutting and matching the stone stones to create harmonious sets that highlight the beauty of each gem. Each piece is then mirror polished by hand, creating intense reflections as if they have been touched by sunlight.

The new Frivole collection is available from 1st April.

Giorgio Armani has revealed plans to open a new hotel in Diriyah, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

This signature hotel will be the luxury brand’s third destination after Milan and Dubai and is set to be an extraordinary property combining international culture and lifestyle with the rich heritage of The Kingdom. The Armani Hotel Diriyah will be managed by Emaar Hospitality Group.

It will combine the unique architecture and landscape of the destination with Armani hospitality and will be developed by Diriyah in collaboration with Mr. Giorgio Armani himself.

Giorgio Armani said, “This is a pioneering project that was born from rediscovering Saudi Arabia’s roots: a dialogue between history and the present that I find very fascinating. Armani Hotel Diriyah allows me to interpret my idea of lifestyle and hospitality in a particularly subtle and embracing way. After celebrating the tenth anniversary of the opening of the Armani Hotels in Milan and Dubai, I am ready to take on this exciting new challenge. I am inspired by this initiative and delighted to be part of a project of such wide geographical and cultural scope.”

The property will be developed by an in-house design team and architects who are involved in the design of the development stages. The design will be characterised by essential lines that enhance the precious materials utilised, and a subtle interplay of volumes, light and shadow — perfectly in line with the aesthetics and landscape of Saudi Arabia. It will include 70 luxuriously designed rooms, two restaurants and a high-end spa, with suites having their own spa and a swimming pool, offering a variety of wellness, hospitality and relaxation experiences.

The hotel is connected to approximately 18 exclusive self-contained ultra-luxury Armani Branded Residences– designed and furnished by Armani – with spacious interiors and outdoor pools, landscaped terraces and rooftops.

Diriyah is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site At-Turaif, as well as the lush palm groves of Wadi Hanifah. It will soon be home to Diriyah development, an acclaimed pedestrian-centric project that preserves the rich history and culture of Saudi Arabia. Upon completion, Diriyah will comprise 13 unique districts inclusive of museums, cultural institutions, fine dining, residences, hospitality offerings, office space, retail, and outdoor attractions.

Jerry Inzerillo Group CEO of Diriyah Gate Development Authority commented, “It is an honour to partner with Armani Hotels on this prestigious project. Their elegant and forward-thinking approach to modern hospitality will bring a new dynamic to Diriyah’s hospitality offering and bring with it an exciting guest experience to the Kingdom. Watches & Wonders 2022: Parmigiani Fleurier Unveils Its New Novelties

Parmigiani Fleurier today revealed the latest timepieces to join its offering as part of the latest edition of Watches & Wonders, reiterating the brand’s position of exclusivity its expertise in high watchmaking.

“I feel we are living in a new era of watchmaking.” Said Parmigiani Fleurier CEO Guido Terreni. “Watch purists are seeking creativity and interesting innovations, in a way that we maybe only experienced in the ’70s. In just a few months since its launch, the Tonda PF has exceeded our highest expectations, and is affirming itself as a statement of unostentatious high horology. In 2022, we are excited to nourish the newly born collection with discipline and care, while respecting its core values. With a few but important creations, we are aiming to extend the pleasure for horophiles, pushing the boundaries of the GMT watch through a world premiere, and interpreting Parmigiani Fleurier’s pure style in the Skeleton and Tourbillon functions.”

Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante

Leading the announcements is the impressive Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante, in which horological complication meets simplicity and purism. Leading on from the Tonda PF collection launch in 2021, this world-first design combines discreet complexity with immediate user-friendliness in a watch that captures the elegance, innovation and attention to detail that is synonymous with this Maison. This new model embodies the spirit of the brand with its sartorial approach that will appeal to a seasoned globetrotter who knows what he wants. The complication features two superimposed hour hands: one in rhodium-plated gold and the other in rose gold. Pressing the pusher at 8 o’clock causes the upper rhodium-plated gold hand dedicated to local time to jump one hour forward, thereby revealing the rose gold hand which displays time in the wearer’s place of residence, known as “home time”. Once the second timezone information is no longer required, pressing the crown-integrated rose gold pushbutton repositions the rhodium-plated hand on top of the rose gold hand in the same manner as a split-seconds chronograph hand. It’s an extremely user-friendly watch for globetrotters who travel between time zones, and an instrument for connecting people across distances.

Tonda PF Skeleton

Next, two new Tonda PF Skeleton watches in 18ct rose gold and steel/platinum highlight the Maison’s expertise and creativity in high watchmaking. Parmigiani Fleurier’s artisans have created a meticulously hand-chamfered latticework that puts on display the innermost details of the watch’s movement and draws attention to the intricate design of the PF777 calibre. This watch is designed for those who understand fine watchmaking and have a keen sense of style and refinement.

Tonda PF Flying Tourbillon

The new Tonda PF Flying Tourbillon is a work of art, highlighting the spirit of the brand. It embodies a highly sophisticated complication paired with a simple yet elegant design that draws the eye in. With its pure lines, it embodies the stylistic vision of Parmigiani Fleurier and its artistic expression. Concealed within a sandblasted full platinum 950 case and dial the Calibre PF517 features a flying tourbillon with automatic winding via a platinum micro-rotor. Its 42mm dial is fitted with a screwed-in crown guaranteeing water-resistance of up to 100 metres, and its sapphire crystal caseback reveals some of the 207 parts composing its mechanical self-winding calibre. This rare, elegant watch will be limited to just 25 pieces.

Tonda GT Chronograph

And finally, on a sportier note, the Tonda GT Chronograph returns to the forefront with functions and colours that offer a laid back style, while remaining in the realm of complications. This year it has two new versions: 18ct rose gold with chronograph and big date functions; and steel with chronograph and annual calendar functions.

Breitling Unveils Its New Navitimer Celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the Original

As Breitling’s Navitimer celebrates its 70th anniversary, a newly redesigned collection is unveiled in the air, where its journey began.

Breitling’s history of pilot’s watches has seen the brand loved by aviation professionals, plan enthusiasts and anyone in between. This year, the original pilot’s timepiece, the Breitling Navitimer celebrates its 70th anniversary and is being honoured with a new look revamped collection that celebrates bold colour, enhanced styling and incredible journeys.

Georges Kern, Breitling CEO

“We don’t throw the term ‘icon’ around lightly,” says Georges Kern, CEO of Breitling. “The Navitimer is one of the most recognizable watches ever made. It’s on collectors’ lists of the greatest watches of all time. What began as a tool for pilots has gone on to mean something profound to every single person who has had this timepiece along on their personal journey.”

The watch was unveiled during a special in-flight event on 29th March between Zurich and Geneva which invited VIPs, international journalists and partners to take part in the journey. “What better place than in the air to launch this new collection,” says Breitling CEO Georges Kern. “The Navitimer began as a pilot’s navigational tool. Today it’s a symbol for everyone plotting their personal journeys through life. It’s rare for a watch to maintain its popularity over 70 years and still come back with an even broader appeal.”

Just before takeoff, the brand unveiled the new Navitimier with a special “in-flight entertainment” edition of the Breitling Summit Webcast which took views through the watch’s 70-year history. While onboard, guests had the opportunity to discover the new collection. Breitling ensure the flights were carbon neutral but buying the equivalent amount of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) via Swiss’ Compensaidprogram.

The Design

The new Navitimer combines the historical and most renowned elements of the design and is therefore instantly recognisable as a Navitimer from afar. Close up, however, this new look watch features modern refinements that offer a new twist on these classic pieces. With its circular slide rule, baton indexes, a trio of chronograph counters, and notched bezel for easy grip it is designed for both comfort and style. A flattened slide rule and a domed crystal create the illusion of a more compact profile, while alternating polished and brush finishes give the metal elements a lustrous yet understated quality. A slimmer silhouette on the oscillating weight enhances the open-caseback view of the COSC-certified Breitling Manufacture Calibre 01. This movement provides the wearer with 70 hours of reserve power and allows the wearer to change the date at any time.

The watch is completed with the return of the AOPA wings to their original position at 12 o’clock. It comes in a range of sizes for all tastes ranging from 41mm, to 43mm to 46mm in either stainless steel or 18-carat red gold. The grand finale comes from a choice of straps in semi-shiny alligator or a seven-row metal bracelet. Stylish colours available include shades of blue, green and copper.

The Campaign

The new Navitimer is celebrated with a campaign titled “Navitimer – for the Journey”. It features the Navitimer Squad, made up of basketball superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, American Ballet Theatre principal dancer Misty Copeland, and aviation pioneer and explorer Bertrand Piccard, all sharing their journeys to where they are today, at the top of their fields.

“This project means a lot to me because it celebrates not only where I was in life, but where I’d come from and where I am going,” says Misty Copeland. “There is an absolute parallel between navigating towards a physical destination and navigating towards the vision of where you want to be in life. You’ll see that theme come through in these three stories.”

The History

The original Breitling Navitimer

Developed in 1952 by Willy Breitling, the Navitimer was designed as a wrist-worn chronograph with a circular slide rule that would allow pilots to perform all necessary flight calculations. Two years later, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), the largest aviators’ club in the world, announced the design as its official timepiece.

The association’s winged logo was emblazoned at 12 o’clock, and the “navigation timer”—or Navitimer—was born. As the aviation industry grew so did the success of the Navitimer. Beloved by airline captains and aircraft enthusiasts, it even made its way into space on the wrist of astronaut Scott Carpenter in 1962 as a 24-hour timepiece to tell day from night. The watch became famed for both its function and style and is until today, a favourite with both professional pilots and celebrities alike.

The new Breitling Navitimer is now available at Breitling stores and online.

Hermès Beauty Reveals the Latest Addition to its Makeup Collection

Hermès introduces the fourth chapter in its make-up collection; Hermès Plein Air a new collection dedicated to the skin’s complexion.

As beauty begins to take a natural direction, and we are all dreaming of that “I-woke-up-like-this” perfection, Hermès reveals Plein Air; the secret to beautiful skin.

Plein Air is designed to enhance the natural beauty of our skin with freshness and light allowing it to breathe.

Available in twelve revitalising shades, the complexion balm evenly adapts to all skin tones. It has been scientifically formulated with hyaluronic acid complex for long-lasting hydration throughout the day, and evening primrose oil to help protect the skin from external aggressors and pollution.

Not only is this a make-up product, but it also contains SPF30 protection to keep away those nasty ultraviolet ageing rays. The balm does not attempt to conceal, but rather highlights the beauty beneath and celebrates every face of today.

To complement the natural complexion balm, Hermès Plein Air compromises two air-light finishing powders, a gentle powder brush and blotting papers, perfect for touch-ups throughout the day. Each of the universal shaded powders embraces the open air with fine, silky powder that enhances the complexion with luminous radiance for softness and comfort. The blotting paper consists of hemp fibres, wood pulp and soft Kozo from the Japanese paper mulberry tree and is perfectly presented in an iconic orange, recycled compact box.

This collection is now available online and at Hermès boutiques across the region.

Bulgari Breaks New Records With the New Octo Finissimo Ultra, the World’s Thinnest Mechanical Watch

Bulgari last night introduced its eighth record-breaking creation, the Octo Finissimo Ultra.

At just 1.80mm thick this remarkable timepiece is the World’s Thinnest Mechanical Watch, displaying the finest in innovation and the quintessence of Italian design.

Designed by Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani, Bulgari’s Creative Director of Watches, the Octo Finissimo Ultra was designed to pay tribute to the 10th anniversary of the Octo collection which has become one of the most extraordinary watchmaking stories over the past decade. With its unique shape and eight-time record-breaking design, the Octo watch is a unique piece of history.

The timepiece challenges the laws of physics and plays on the perception of the visible and the invisible, as thin as a sheet of paper, while a three-dimensional design it’s flat appearance is almost as think as a two-dimensional drawing.

Three years of research and development saw Bulgari’s team reimagine everything they knew about watchmaking in order to bring this innovation to life. For the first time in history, the watch uses the caseback as a mainplate on which the 170 components of the BVL Calibre are integrated.

The new Octo Finissimo Ultra was unveiled in Rome at the iconic Piazza della Rotonda on March 21st 2022 with a spectacular event. The eight columns of the Pantheon represented the eight world records that this watch has achieved and the eight patents that have been filed throughout its ten years of design.

As the first time this location has been host to such an event Bulgari chose to honour this moment surrounded by the beauty of its home, the historical city of Rome. A feat made possible thanks to a collaboration with the Direzione Musei Statali Città di Roma, and the Museo del Pantheon, but also for the support received from Soprintendenza Speciale Archeologia, Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali and Parco Archeologico del Colosseo.

Surrounded by VIP guests and friends of the Maison, Bulgari CEO Jean-Christophe Babin spoke of his pride of this moment “This fabulous landmark that we are setting today with the Octo Finissimo Ultra is in fact – for me and all the teams – the fulfilment of a dream. One which now guarantees that Bulgari will forever be acknowledged as having written some of the finest chapters in Swiss watchmaking. And the fact that the Maison is Italian makes us particularly proud“, he said.

The event saw the worlds of art, science and technology intertwined as the surface of the Pantheon façade was virtually reimagined into the masterly stage-setting for a contemporary architectural production. A screening of “TEMPLE OF LIGHT_ULTRA AT PANTHEON” by OUCHHH, a real-time generative artwork curated by Reasoned Art, created a bridge between cultural heritage and innovation.

The temple of the gods of Ancient Rome was the scene of an iconic art installation that consisted of three moments, one of which was in Live real-time. The beginning and the end of the show saw thousands of data from the history of Italian architecture and art that, through artificial intelligence algorithms, have been reworked and projected on the pronaos of the Pantheon.

Artwork in the show was created using data extracted from the brain waves of the conductor monitored through an EEG Headset device. It resulted in a never-seen-before work that crossed the boundaries between man and machine.

Further combining technology and design, the first ten owners of the Octo Finissimo Ultra will receive an exclusive NFT artwork that guarantees the authenticity and uniqueness of the watch by means of blockchain technology. A QR code is engraved on the barrel of each watch to encompass a global and connected ecosystem and allows full transparency of the journey of this unique creation

An exhibition on the history of the octagon shape is currently on display in the historic Bulgari boutique on Via Dei Condotti, representing the eight facets of this iconic watch.
