Samer Yamani, Curator of MENASA Emirati Design Platform discusses the project which invites local and international designers to celebrate the best of Emirati crafts and tradition.
As part of the Arts & Culture programmes at Expo 2020 Dubai MENASA – Emirati Design Platform has been created to shine a light on some of the incredible traditional crafts and traditions from the UAE. The MENASA project will help to showcase Emirati crafts in a contemporary way as international and local designers offer their own interpretation of some of these precious methods. More than 40 designers have been commissioned to develop exclusive design collections inspired by local crafts and stories from the UAE and the designs will be presented in a special space at Expo 2020 Dubai. A series of documentaries, shot on location around the UAE, will be exhibited alongside the design collections, to further educate visitors to Expo on the UAE’s arts and craft world.
As Curator of the project, Samer Yamani has been at the heart of the project since the beginning, bringing together the selection of designers and working closely with them to find new ways of showcases the best of Emirati heritage. We discover more about what the project has to offer and how it will help to change the perception of arts and crafts in the region.
Can you tell us a little about the MENASA project at Expo 2020 and what you hope to achieve with it?
The collective approach of MENASA, which means ‘platform’ in Arabic, is inspired by the theme and spirit of Expo 2020 Dubai, ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’. MENASA will curate, promote, and present the design and crafts scene in the UAE. By bringing together artisans and designers from the UAE and around the world, MENASA is nurturing a rich cultural and creative dialogue through design and innovation.

8,000 Waves: The Pearl Diving Story
Why do you believe it is important to showcase Emirati talents in the art and design sector and how is the platform supporting this?
MENASA aims to be the largest ever gathering of local and international designers celebrating Emirati crafts and design. MENASA maps the diversity and breadth of the Emirati design scene, showcasing established and emerging designers, as well as the public and private organisations that support the local crafts and design community. The eyes of the world will be on Dubai and the UAE for the six months of Expo 2020 and this presents a great opportunity for the design and crafts community.
How do you think the artists can be empowered through the platform MENASA?
The fact that these designers will be part of something as collaborative and immersive as Expo 2020 is in itself empowering. MENASA has brought together diverse players from across the Emirati crafts and design scene – artisans, designers and organisations – to present new and innovative design content, creating a collective and unique snapshot of the thriving creative activity across the UAE.
Why do you think it’s important to educate the world on the traditions and heritage of Emirati crafts?
To really get to know a country, one needs to understand its history and culture. The Emirati crafts on display at Expo 2020 represent rich, living traditions that go back in history. With the “Crafts Stories” for example, each story is told through a multi-layered journey that reflects many facets of the UAE, its landscape, people, traditions, values and identity.

8,000 Waves: The Pearl Diving Story
What would you like to see as the future of the UAE’s design and crafts scene?
I want it to thrive and prosper and be constantly reaching new territories and audiences. This can be achieved by merging the skills and the rich heritage of Emirati artisans with contemporary creativity and innovative techniques and materials.
Can you share details on some of the talented artists that our readers should know about?
More than 40 local and international designers were commissioned to develop exclusive design collections inspired by local crafts and stories from the UAE. These include Al Ghadeer UAE Crafts, Alia Bin Omair, Ammar Kalo, Bil Arabi, Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council, Khalid Shafar, and Tashkeel from the UAE, while international designers and design brands include BD Barcelona Design (Spain), Estudio Campana (Brazil), Iwan Maktabi (Lebanon), Klove Studio (India), and Nicolas Jebran (Lebanon).

8,000 Waves: The Pearl Diving Story
Tell us about the space that the works will be showcased in?
All design pieces and collections will be exhibited and available for sale from MENASA’s design space, which will feature a dramatic 13-metre window display, designed by Carmelo Zappulla and Rami Al Ali, that merges 3D printing with local crafts. It will be located on the ground level of the Rove Expo 2020 hotel, next to Al Wasl Plaza, the heart of the Expo 2020 site.
What can you share about the documentaries that will accompany the works and how they will showcase the best of the UAE’s crafts scene?
A series of documentaries shot on location around the UAE, will also be exhibited alongside the design collections, drawing visitors further into the intimate worlds of artisans and their crafts and traditions, including clay, safeefa (palm frond weaving), talli (embroidery), sadu (bedouin weaving), gargour making (wire-crafted fish traps), pearl diving and coffee making.

8,000 Waves: The Pearl Diving Story
What are some highlights of the programme that we can expect to see throughout Expo 2020?
One of our crafts stories is 8,000 Waves: The Pearl Diving Story, which is a collaboration between Todomuta, a Spanish design studio, and Asateer, an Emirati design studio that specialises in the creation of handcrafted products from mother of pearl and raw materials. The studio was founded by Mohammed Al Suwaidi, the grandson of a pearl diver. The range evokes the history of pearl diving in the Emirates, which dates back approximately 8,000 years, the waves of the Arabian Gulf, the reflections of the sea, the sun and the light, and the shape of the boats that once carried the pearl divers for months at a time.
Another highlight is Designer of the Week which will present a unique snapshot of the thriving creative activity across the UAE by representing 24 UAE-based established and emerging designers, as well as public and private organisations that support local crafts and the design community, be it through funding, promotion, providing exhibition space or safeguarding skills.
What is a message you would send to our readers on why they should visit MENASA?
Crafts have a special, innate power to communicate a local culture, a nation and its identity. Design and creativity are global languages that all can perceive and understand. MENASA will present Emirati content through a contemporary lens, showcasing the diversity and vibrancy of the UAE’s craft and design scene. Expo 2020 Dubai will be the first World Expo ever held in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia region. It will also be the largest mega-event held in the world following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, Expo 2020 will be an important milestone, not just for the UAE in its Golden Jubilee year, but also for the global community. There will be a huge amount to see but don’t miss MENASA.
Dr Hayat Shamsuddin, Senior Vice President, Arts and Culture, Expo 2020 Dubai shares an insight into what we can expect from the creative sectors at the global event.
As Expo 2020 Dubai opens its doors there is so much to celebrate in all sectors of business, innovation, the future, and so much more. But one of the key elements of this global event is to shed light on art and culture, both in the region and globally, celebrating some of the world’s greatest talent.
As Senior Vice President, of Arts and Culture at Expo 2020 Dubai Dr Hayat Shamsuddin is responsible for overseeing the smooth running of this sector and ensuring that the event showcases some of the world’s greatest art talent. Through various programmes and initiatives, Expo 2020 will present and celebrate arts and culture in the UAE and the region, sharing the incredible talent we have here with the rest of the world as well as inviting the different cultures to understand and immerse themselves in the UAE’s arts and crafts scene. In line with the theme of Expo 2020; ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’ and the key themes of Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability, Shamsuddin heads up two key projects that showcase and celebrate arts and culture in the region.
The Public Arts Programme and MENASA, the Emirati Design Platform will help to showcase the best of international and local talent as well as shine a light on the UAE’s arts and crafts scene. We find out more about this and the upcoming plans for the Arts & Culture sector at Expo 2020 Dubai.

Visitors at Al Wasl Plaza
We are almost ready for Expo 2020 to open – how are you working to build the momentum of the projects you’re working on and raise awareness of the Arts and Culture sectors?
We are all incredibly excited to have reached this point and to be ready to welcome the world to Expo 2020 Dubai –the greatest cultural gathering on Earth. The lead-up to Expo’s opening has generated momentum of its own. You can feel it in the streets and in the media, you can feel it engaging with the artists and the workers on-site, you can feel it talking to the volunteers and the managers of the Country Pavilions. You can feel it across Dubai and the whole of the UAE.
We have mobilised all of our resources to raise awareness of what Expo 2020 is all about through our media campaigns – gradually revealing upcoming events such as the incredible Opening Ceremony, the headline talents for our Infinite Nights series, the content of our Public Arts Programme and MENASA, the Emirati Design Platform – to name just a few. And once Expo gets going, we will continue to share the many cultural events taking place every hour for up to 15 hours of every single day over the next six months, with the rest of the world through every available channel.
Tell us a little about some of the platforms that have been put in place to showcase the best of Emirati talent in the worlds of art and culture?
Expo 2020 coincides with the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the UAE so there will be numerous platforms where visitors can discover the best of Emirati talent. I lead two pioneering, bespoke commissions for Expo 2020 Dubai that reflect and champion the contemporary art scene of the UAE and position Expo 2020 Dubai within the global artistic and intellectual discourse. The first is a curated Public Art Programme, comprising of 11 specially commissioned artworks that have been permanently installed across the Expo 2020 site, and the second is a Design and Crafts Platform, which brings together more than 40 designers and artisans to collaboratively produce contemporary design collections that are exclusive to Expo 2020 Dubai.
I would also encourage visitors to explore the stunningly beautiful UAE Pavilion, brimming with exhibitions that showcase Emirati culture and achievements. The Expo site is one vast open-air art gallery with artworks, installations and sculptures located in all three districts – Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability – as well as in the numerous parks and open spaces.

Expo 2020 – Al Wasl Plaza
How do you think the Public Art Programme is helping to support and nurture local talent?
The Public Art Programme is the first of its kind in the UAE and the region. The programme has engaged with contemporary artists to create artworks within the public spaces of a neighbourhood while it is being planned and built. These artworks are permanent; they will stay in the urban fabric, so the residents and visitors to Expo’s legacy neighbourhood, District 2020, will interact with concepts, aesthetics and knowledge that come from different parts of the world. The artworks of local artists are presented in connection with the creation of their regional and international counterparts and the presence of these artworks will open doors for creativity and imagination to flourish.
And how do you think MENASA – the Emirati Design Platform is nurturing local talent?
MENASA is a platform for Emirati crafts and design at Expo 2020 Dubai, presented by the Design and Crafts Programme. The collective approach of MENASA, which means ‘platform’ in Arabic, is inspired by the theme and spirit of Expo 2020 Dubai, ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’. By bringing together artisans and designers from the UAE and around the world, MENASA is nurturing a rich cultural and creative dialogue. MENASA tells the stories of the UAE of today through exclusive curated design collections by more than 40 local and international designers, displayed within a vibrant design and retail space at Al Wasl Plaza, at the heart of Expo 2020 Dubai.

MENASA has brought together diverse players from across the Emirati crafts and design scene – artisans, designers and organisations – to present new and innovative products, creating a collective and unique snapshot of the thriving creative activity across the UAE.
How do you think the artists can be empowered through the platform?
World Expos have a 170-year-old tradition of creating a space for creativity, for innovation and collaboration in all fields, not just arts and culture. Expo 2020 will be a space, a platform, where visitors can see the world in one place. Every visitor experience will be unique, every Country Pavilion will have something special to offer. For artists involved in Expo or for those visiting the site, there is the opportunity to engage in dialogue and creative conversations. As a source of inspiration and as a space where ideas can be exchanged, there is nothing approaching what Expo 2020 has to offer. It will be the largest event ever held in the Arab world and the first World Expo to be held in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia (MEASA) region.
Can you share details on some of the talented artists that our readers should know about?
The Public Art Programme will present 11 creations by artists from the UAE, the wider region and the world in the public spaces of the Expo 2020 site. These permanent substantial public artworks will be landmarks, becoming an essential part of District 2020’s innovative character, interwoven within its urban fabric and a future platform for contemporary artistic practices in the city of Dubai.
The works of the artists – Monira Al Qadiri, Hamra Abbas, Afra Al Dhaheri, Shaikha Al Mazrou, Abdullah Al Saadi, Asma Belhamar, Olafur Eliasson, Nadia Kaabi-Linke, Khalil Rabah, Yinka Shonibare and Haegue Yang – will live on in the future city of District 2020. Their work will be an essential part of the visual identity of the neighbourhood.

Expo 2020 Al Wasl Plaza
What are some highlights we can expect to see throughout the duration of Expo 2020 in relation to the art and culture sector?
The contemporary artworks of the Public Art Programme, curated by Tarek Abou Elfetouh, are certainly a highlight. They will form a creative journey around Expo 2020’s public spaces, where visitors are invited to engage with the theories on perception and the power of imagination formulated by the famous Arab mathematician, astronomer and physicist, Ibn Al Haytham. Ibn Al Haytham’s seminal work Book of Optics (c. 11th century) argued that perception is never complete without prior knowledge, comparative measures, memory and imagination. Another highlight will be MENASA – the Emirati Design Platform, curated by Samer Yamani, which has brought together all the players within the design ecosystem and maps the diversity and breadth of the Emirati design scene, showcasing established and emerging designers, as well as the public and private organisations that support the local crafts and design community. It is the largest ever gathering of local and international designers celebrating Emirati crafts and design.
What is a message you would send to our readers about the upcoming opening of Expo 2020?
As one of the first mega-events to take place since the beginning of the pandemic, Expo 2020 Dubai’s theme of ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’ is more relevant than ever. So too is the role of Expo in bringing together people, communities and nations to build bridges, inspire action and deliver real-life solutions to real-life challenges.
My message is: “Don’t come once. Come many, many times. With so many immersive experiences, so many creative dialogues to engage in and so many architectural wonders to marvel at, a single day won’t even scratch the surface of what will be the world’s biggest and most spectacular cultural gathering.”

Saint Laurent put on a spectacular show under the lights of the Eiffel Tower to showcase the Spring/Summer 2022 collection, designed by Anthony Vaccarello.
With an impressive backdrop and a spectacular waterfall alongside the runway, this was a show that will go down in history. After taking a break from the runway due to the COVID-19 pandemic Saint Laurent truly came back with a bang!

Creative Director Anthony Vaccarello wanted to pay tribute to French designer and socialite Paloma Picasso and her independence of spirit. More specifically, he was inspired by a quote from Pierre Bergé, Co-Founder of Yves Saint Laurent, that depicts the moment the designer met Picasso:
“We were invited to a friend’s house who was throwing a party. At one point, I no longer spot Yves. I look for him and find him with a young unknown girl. She had wedge heels, a turban on her head, and things she had tinkered into clothes. It was Paloma Picasso. ” Pierre Bergé.

The image of Picasso and her iconic style and a moment that was pivotal in Yves Saint Laurent’s career as meeting Picasso opened up fee new artistic paths for the designer.

Vaccarello embraces Piccasso’s energy and freedom, as well as her seductiveness – elements that are synonymous with the house.

Silhouettes were tight on the body, tall and slim these figure-hugging styles are for the most body-confident of women, while structured jackets and mini dresses featured boxy cuts that are elegant and stylish. Classic jackets and blazers with strong structure evoke strength and power.

Colour was a key part of this collection with flashes of bold hues such as orange, blue and purple lighting up the runway, juxtaposed with classic monochrome pieces. Floral prints added edgy femininity with prints being pulled from the house’s archives.

“For a long time, I wanted to transpose this meeting between Paloma Picasso and Yves Saint Laurent, whose importance few realize in the designer’s creative journey. It is a moment to which I am sensitive as a designer, because for me it is the defining moment when Saint Laurent’s fashion creativity became a style.” Explained Anthony Vaccarello

Dior kicked off Paris Fashion Week today, presenting its Spring/Summer 2022 collection in one of the biggest shows of the season.
Maria Grazia Chiuri was inspired by the sixties era and in particular, she referenced Marc Bonhan’s period as Creative Director at Dior and the Slim Look collection of 1961 that completely changed the fashion industry.
Revisiting the fashion of this time Chiuri was inspired by the graphic prints, sharp silhouettes and experimental nature of the swinging sixties.

A bold and bright colour palette consisted of yellow, red, green, navy, orange and raspberry, offering a playful and joyous approach to style. This was truly the colour we all need in our lives!

Jackets were reinvented with boxy cuts, and coats, skirts, Bermuda shorts and dresses were combined and layered in multiple ways in a series of contrasts.

A selection of designs produced in 3D embroidery is enhanced by a textured visual effect, while the choice of materials was light-hearted and playful: scuba and nylon reinterpret volumes for a contemporary twist on sixties style.

The collection exudes freedom, fun and happiness and sets the tone for what we expect of this season.

Burberry skipped the traditional London Fashion Week schedule earlier this month and presented its Spring/Summer 2022 collection with a lower-key event without an audience.
Designed by Riccardo Tisci, Chief Creative Officer the collection represents freedom and expression as classic pieces are deconstructed in new ways.

‘To me, this presentation really represents the freedom of our imaginations: how we dream to come alive.” The designer explained. “I wanted to move through a series of immersive spaces, each of them unique and unexpected in their sound, texture and experience. It’s that idea of flicking between the endless realities and fantasies we have at our fingertips each day.”

The presentation was titled “Animal Instinct” and was dedicated to Tisci’s mother Elmerinda.

Beginning with the classic Burberry trench which was reconstructed and rebuilt in new silhouettes the designer set the tone for a collection that was traditional but in new mixed-up ways. There was a play with volumes and materials that offered new shapes and styles. A sense of fluidity is brought to the trench and car coat through fluted and oversized sleeves on collarless and hooded shapes, plus capelets that are perforated or trimmed with leather – reinvigorating the traditional with a twist of youthful energy.

A kaleidoscope of geometric and experimental abstract prints – evoking the flowing forms of camouflage – and the ‘Universal Passport’ graphic adorns dresses and shirts, layered under printed sheer or mesh tops to create new harmonies of pattern. Geometric colour-block intarsia and prints on dresses and oversized sleeveless blazers.

Freedom of movement is explored through flowing cap-sleeved and halterneck gowns with thigh-high splits. Mini dresses are adorned with sweeping exaggerated fringing, frills and straps, and paired with juxtaposing oversized jackets.

An unstructured approach to British tailoring sees boxy-fit blazers reworked in sleeveless and backless cuts. Lapels are reconstructed as scarves to wrap over the shoulder. A chest plate with boned corsetry is subversively recast in smooth leather or as a hoodie in technical neoprene with a peplum hem.

In contrast to the oversized proportions, there are sexy figure-hugging silhouettes in stretch technical fabrications – exuding a mood of confidence that underpins the looks and elevates stand-alone pieces.

The new Rhombi bag was introduced for the first time. A new ellipse shoulder bag inspired by the abstract curved prints in the ready-to-wear collection. It can be seen presented in smooth leather in soft fawn and black, and in coated canvas in birch brown check. The Olympia bag also makes a return this season with new interpretations.
Shoes come in the form of square-to calf leather sandals with a slim heel or flat leather sole.

For the first time ever the Creative Directors of two iconic fashion Houses have swapped roles to created collections for each other’s brand creating collections coined “FENDACE”, combining key elements from both Houses.
Donatella Versace, Chief Creative Officer at Versace and Kim Jones, Creative Director at Fendi surprised audiences around the world with their designs for each one’s respective brands.

FENDI BY VERSACE
“It’s a first in the history of fashion: two designers having a true creative dialogue that stems from respect and friendship. It led to us swapping roles to create these two collections.” Said Donatella Versace, Chief Creative Officer Versace in a statement.

FENDI BY VERSACE
Both brands were very clear that this is not a collaboration in the normal sense, rather the coming together of two iconic fashion houses and two influential designers to create collections that celebrate Italy and embrace freedom, fun and virtuosity – the three pillars that this project stands for.

VERSACE BY FENDI
Jones and Versace who are known to be close friends, took inspiration from their respective fashion houses, combining it with the DNA of their peer’s brands to create collections that are a perfect combination of both. Silvia Venturini Fendi who works alongside Jones on the Fendi accessories was also heavily involved in the project.

VERSACE BY FENDI
Both designers had access to the archives of each house and they used their design skills to create a unique cross-fertilisation, with elements from both houses brought together in each designer’s own vision.

VERSACE BY FENDI
Inspired by the mid-to-late nineties period of the storied house, VERSACE BY FENDI explores an idea of duality, most pointedly seen in a melding of the Fendi Monogram with the Versace Greek Key motif. Here, garments metamorphose, many revealed to be reversible with hidden codes and the exquisite craftsmanship of the Fendi atelier on display, such as in chainmail made leather. Here a multigenerational approach is embraced throughout.

FENDI BY VERSACE
FENDI BY VERSACE takes a more punk rock stance with Donatella Versace declaring contamination and disruption to be key. Versace safety pins proliferate, puncturing Fendi signs and symbols. Chain mail is married with lace and crystal-encrusted F’s in an interpretation of the Monogram. While silk faille mimics denim and shearlings are shaved, making the world of Fendi that little bit more youthfully rebellious.

VERSACE BY FENDI
The two collections which are both for Pre-Fall 2022, were revealed during an intimate gathering in Milan with supermodels including Gigi Hadid, Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell walking the runway in the designs. The show began with the Versace creations by Kim Jones, before the logos switched and the Fendi creations by Donatella were on display.

VERSACE BY FENDI
A spectacular finish saw both designers coming together as a lineup of supermodels stood alongside them, showcasing the designs.
As the brands explained post-show; “Ultimately, Fendace is about the need for sincerity in fashion today rather than strategy.”

FENDI BY VERSACE
The show was dedicated to the late Kip Sims, a dear friend and colleague of Kim Jones and the house of Fendi.

Giorgio Armani’s Spring/Summer 2022 womenswear collection “Métissage” debuted at Milan Fashion Week on 25th September 2022.
After more than twenty years the designer returned to present his collection at Via Borgonuovo 21, in the historic theatre that has been the backdrop for some memorable fashion shows. This show was a key moment in returning to life as we know it for the designer who was the first to cancel his runway show in 2020 when the pandemic first hit.

The collection captures the uplifting, joyous mood we are all looking for with a celebration of colour and lightness.

The show notes read: “A métissage of exquisitely Armanian tropes mixed with nomadic scents, decorations and colours that seem to have been gathered during a journey or a trip to be reinterpreted with an urban feel.”

Light colours and light materials create an overall feeling of weightlessness and freedom, with soft floaty fabrics and easy-to-wear cuts and styles this was a collection that will transform any women’s wardrobe.

The collection begins with a colour palette of blue and white that’s somewhat nautical in its appearance. Flashes of res start to add some boldness as the colour is the first to be introduced. Eventually, colours are featured throughout, but mostly in soft pastel tones that complement the lightness of the materials. There is a lot of movement in the looks as the materials catch the air.

Soft and elongated jackets, some with knotted closures; trousers as wide as skirts, or with tapered volumes; little tops, and tunics create a sense of understated elegance, while pure jackets, flowing trousers and long floaty skirts offer a relaxed feel to summer dressing.

Colours explode in a juxtaposition of reds and purples, and plays of spontaneous layerings offering an unexpected moment.
Eveningwear is a feast of light: luminous, weightless gowns that barely skim the body, made of layers of tulle that create melting, surprising, infinitely soft nuances of colour.

Accessories add a note of bold, streamlined design: handbags with rounded shapes, or small bags with curved handles, and then large totes and crocheted shoulder bags.
Two elements are present throughout each look: knotted headscarves or crocheted caps, while shoes are flat with open-toes or laced around the feet.
Donatella Versace presented a collection of bold and colourful looks that channel confidence and strength for her Spring/Summer 2022 collection.
With fresh designs, she reinterpreted classic prints motifs and icons from the House’s archives and gave them a modern-day upgrade.

Transcending generations this collection speaks both to the young generation and the old men and women who are true fans of the House.

The show was a star-studded lineup with models including friends of the house Naomi Campbell, Gigi Hadid, Emily Ratajkowski and Lourdes Leon.

Popstar Dua Lipa who is the face of the brand’s latest campaign opened and closed the shows wearing looks from the collection while a soundtrack formed of some of her hits accompanied the show.

Prada’s Spring/Summer 2022 collection looks at the idea of seduction and the way it can be expressed through clothing.
Designed by Co-Creative Directors Raf Simons and Miuccia Prada the collection, which was presented this week, offered a more feminine and playful approach than we have seen in recent seasons.

Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons at the Prada SS22 Womenswear show
The show was presented simultaneously in Milan and Shanghai with two mirror image shows taking place in both destinations as audiences also watched from across the globe through their screens, bringing together this modern community in a unique format.

The collection itself was feminine and wearable. Pieces were designed to trace the ideas and outlines of clothing, as clothing was stripped back to its basics and its relationship with the body examined.

A colour palette that sees black at the base tone with flashes of red, orange and yellow and the occasional pastel tone. Hemlines were mostly super short, while fitted skirts and dresses fell around the ankle.

Leather was a key element in this offering with the classic biker jacket making a comeback in its traditional cropped form or a long floor-length version.

Evening wear elements such as lace and satin were applied to more casual garments, translating them into the every day and the traditional train was prominent throughout the collection as it appeared as a single piece of couture silk.

While elegant and wearable this collection sparked elements of fantasy, just a hint of glamour for the everyday woman who doesn’t want to lose her sparkle.
Tod’s presented its Spring/Summer 2022 collection “An Italian Light Life” in Milan on 24th September 2021.
Continuing to reaffirm its link to the world of art, the Italian House worked with artists who tell a story of craftsmanship through their creations.
The collection sends a message of freedom and lightness with relaxed summery designs that draw on elements from the world of sport but are also perfect for urban life as well as on a relaxing summer vacation. While pushing the limits of design, the collection doesn’t forget the House’s codes and DNA.
Materials are carefully chosen for their unique properties from lightness to versatility while the finest leather and jersey are used to construct add a sense of quality and good taste to the summer wardrobe.
The balance of the collection is a very important factor that mixes short trench coats, jackets with a masculine imprint and perfect cut, windbreakers and bikers with rubber gommino patches and lightweight parkas that make you think of moments in the open air.
The continuation of the T Timeless project makes pieces instantly recognisable with the logo featuring throughout on buckles shoes and bags.
Footwear has an androgynous feel consisting of sandals and sneakers with macro rubber soles, T Timeless loafers and ankle boots with a heightened platform.
Bags include small and compact T Timeless handbags in a range of colours including timeless classic shades with vivid notes of yellow, turquoise and bright red.
After previously collaborating with Vanessa Beecroft and Thomas De Falco, for the Spring/Summer 2022 season, Carlota Guerrero now tells a story of her journey through the craftsmanship tools and the simulation of a virtual lab. On the Mediterranean notes of the piece by Rosalia NANA – Ch.9: Concepción, seven female figures, confront each other with material sculptures, recreating a symbolic atelier.

Emporio Armani’ Spring/Summer 2022 collection is one that celebrates both the past and the future.
Marking 40 years since Giorgio Armani introduced the line in Milan this collection is a key moment for the brand as it also looks to the future of fashion working with new materials and styles that combine classic tailoring and contemporary sportswear.

Emporio Armani
Armani drew inspiration from his tailoring history but with new structures and shapes that were sorter, relaxed and more wearable for every day.

Emporio Armani
A collection that was definitely for the modern contemporary dresser but not forgetting the timeless classic Armani client, the designer was about to offer something for everyone with this collection.

Emporio Armani
There were wide-leg cargo pants, floor-length coats and oversize shirts which had a hint of nineties culture, while soft linen suits, loose-fitting silk rompers and relaxed chic cuts offered the timeless element we expect from the brand but in a new lighter and more carefree way.

Emporio Armani
Building up from dark blues and navy at the beginning through soft neutral tones and ending on a bold and bright colour palette this journey through colour perfectly represented the build-up of optimism and joy something we all need in our lives!

Emporio Armani
Menswear looks had an underlying tone of adventure. Maps were printed across garments and there was the suggestion of exploring across safari-inspired looks.

Emporio Armani
This collection was one of the largest we have seen on the runway in recent times and it covered a vast array of styles – proving that the designer really does cater to everyone.

Emporio Armani
For the first time, Giorgio Armani took his closing bow on the runway alongside Pantaleo (Leo) Dell’Orco and his niece Silvana Armani, who are now head of the men’s and women’s design offices.

Fausto Puglisi’s Spring/Summer 2022 collection debuted at Milan Fashion Week on 22nd September 2021.
As the new Creative Director, the designer has been carving out a new chapter of the brand which continues with this bold and daring yet feminine collection.

With the themes of passion, desire, assurance, sensuality, dreams and reality at the core of his designs, Puglisi kept within the DNA of the House but reinterpreted it in a modern way that is accessible for all women.

Using some of the House’s archives as a starting point the collection incorporates the iconic animal print the brand is known for, taking it to the next level with oversized faces of Big cats printed on skirts, tops, trousers and more, making a bold impact.

The continual influence of nature is clear as the animal print morphs into floral prints, as well as experimental prints from the seventies which can be seen throughout.

One of the highlight looks is the unforgettable wild tiger motif conceived for the Fall/Winter 2001/2002 collection runway is re-edited from an evening bias slip dress worn by a statuesque Cindy Crawford to a full skirt with couture construction, a long parka, a simple tee and a minidress in jersey that can even be worn over black trousers.

While inspired by the archives each look has a contemporary feel in the way it’s styled, cut or layered. Soft lines combined with classic silhouettes are wearable yet glamorous.

The new Cavalli style symbol is prominently featured: a metal claw that transforms into a heel on evening shoes or satin thigh boots, a detail on large totes or mini bucket bags and a shimmer of light on a shirt.

New colours come in the form of milk and mint green or pixilated iris, but the expressive power of the tiger moving in step with the woman is unchanging and unchangeable. Cavalli looks at nature through the eyes of love and, just like in the 2000s, shouts “I’m the party”.

Alberta Ferretti’s Spring/Summer collection “Touch & Feel” debuted at Milan Fashion Week on 22nd September 2021.
At a time when we are still living in an uncertain world Ferretti decided to focus on the certainties we do have as women – our personal signature, our bodies and our identities – which she explored through the exemplary craftsmanship used in this collection.

A combination of light pieces with strong, powerful textures this offering for spring reaffirms the key elements of style. Silhouettes are soft, airy and light, like a warm summer’s day and dress lengths are high above the knee or long, exaggerated by floating trains.

The colour palette is soft and natural to begin but as the collection develops, bold jewel tones are prominent, adding power and strength to the femininity this collection possesses.

Jackets with a masculine feel have an elongated and decidedly feminine allure. Macro Sangallo embroideries run through dresses and jumpsuits.

Fringes dance, move and seduce. Knotting, weaving, draping are a recurring motif: top, dresses and trousers in hand-crocheted cord; long and short dresses held together by resin inserts; crinolines moulded into feminine armour; and then small woven leather bags and flat wedge sandals tied around the foot.

The butterfly, the only print, a symbol of rebirth and metamorphosis, captures the spirit of the collection. Its colours inspire pictorial degraded effects on evening dresses; its lightness guides a choice of materials ranging from silk and fluid linens to airy and delicate chiffon.

Fendi opened the latest season of Milan Fashion Week today with an impressive show.
Brought to life by Artistic Director of Womenswear Kim Jones, along with Delfina Delettrez, and Silvia Venturini Fendi the collection was a vibrant seventies disco-inspired show of light-hearted glamour.

There was a strong feeling reminiscent of Studio 54, with disco flares, fringe dresses, psychedelic prints and wide-cut suits leading the way. Silky flowy materials and printed kaftans took us back to holidays of the past.

“This is my first live show for Fendi, and it’s a celebration,” Jones said in a statement. Since joining the House in September 2020 Jones has been faced with a global pandemic which has seen all shows presented via a virtual format.

Versace Home presented a new collection of furniture and home accessories at Milan Design Week, created as part of a collaboration between Donatella Versace and the famous duo of design Roberto Palomba and Ludovica Serafini.
The project was created in partnership with Luxury Living Group to integrate fashion luxury and living as part of the Versace world. The furniture pieces were presented in the new store space on Via Durini which was staged like a real home.

The world of Versace was revealed, room by room, in a succession of atmospheres that speak of its extraordinary ability to draw on different artistic expressions and transform them into a liveable reality.

The collection is the fruit of research into the brand’s history, its shows, its icons, and graphic elements that distinguish its philosophy, and most importantly of the incredible experience of the two architects when it comes to create interior design pieces that last.

“I am a very curious person and I always embrace every occasion to learn something new. When I started brainstorming with Ludovica and Roberto, I was captured by their incredible knowledge of design and by the ideas they already had for Versace Home. The way they were able to infuse the new collection with Versace’s iconic codes in their clean, modern and elegant lines is really cool. I love their use of colors and the way the wanted to be respectful of the brand, but at the same time bring it into the present day with their vision”. Said Donatella Versace of the collection.

Make the most of your day by arriving early so you relax at the resort’s pool or have some downtime in the room. Be sure not to miss sunset as you’ll get to witness stunning views across Dubai’s skyline – a great picture-perfect moment!

The RARE Romantic Experience is designed for those who want to make the most of their alone time – whether it’s for new couples, mums and dads who have a night away from the kids, an anniversary or even to pop the question – the resort will be on hand to make your experience truly romantic.

After relaxing in your room for the afternoon head to the resort’s in-house dining destination RARE to discover a unique menu, specially designed to spark romance. After being welcomed with roses at your table, the three-course meal begins with a starter of Smoked Burrata with basil, roasted tomatoes and microgreens or Grilled Lobster with Spanish vinaigrette, soft garlic puree and roasted carrot mousseline. We recommend trying one of each and sharing as you won’t want to miss out on the flavours!
