UAE-based fashion brand Autonomie has just launched its first collection in the region. Based on the concept of authentic storytelling the brand aims to offer a playful, bold, contemporary and fresh aesthetic to serve the dynamic and innovative woman of today. Founder and Creative Director Maha Ahmed decided to launch a fashion brand following her fashion studies and experiences developed from living around the world, with an aim to serve a greater purpose than simply offering clothes. Through Autonomie, she hopes to inspire a world of collective independence and by reminding individuals that no matter where they may be in life, they are never alone. We meet Maha to find out more about her vision for Autonomie and the new collection “Ukiyo”.
How would you introduce your brand to the world?
Autonomie is a story-telling based brand, where every collection recites a new story, philosophy or concept. The point of every collection is to bring people together and help them relate to each other through human experience and let them know that they’re not going through life alone. Aesthetically, the brand is very fun, playful, bold and modern.

Tell us about your debut collection “Ukiyo”.
Ukiyo is a collection that’s very close to my heart, after all, it’s the debut collection; my firstborn. The inspiration stems from a personal experience that I wanted to share as I believed it would resonate with a lot of people. It’s the idea that we often put off living, but instead wait for life to happen. This usually results in our lives passing us by. We wait for the “perfect” opportunity, not realising that we are very much capable of creating our own opportunities. So Ukiyo was an invitation to the world to be more present, to be happy and to seize every moment. On the aesthetic part of the collection, this message was reflected in the fun and playful colours, prints and silhouettes to reiterate the idea of living life to the fullest and to remind people they are alive!
How would you describe your signature style?
I would say the brand’s signature is our custom prints. It’s a significant element of my own approach to design and it’s something that I have enjoyed doing ever since fashion school. I go about it as if I am doing a painting on canvas and then incorporate it as part of the design. This, as well as playing on shapes and symmetry. You’ll find a lot of pieces that lack symmetry like a high-low silhouette or slanted shapes. I feel like “imperfect” silhouettes or asymmetrical ones are more interesting.

What inspires you?
I think I am mostly inspired by human experience: a feeling or an emotion. The human experience is so complex and multi-layered that it’s like an infinite ocean of inspiration for me. I then work on trying to translate that feeling or experience visually. The most enjoyable part of my job is the visual research because it’s like embarking on a journey and you don’t know where you’ll end up. You start with this idea or concept that could become a whole collection. I never know how the collection will look like until I am done. It’s the story that guides me.
When do you feel at your most creative state of mind?
I would say I am most creative when my mind is clear, but this is something that it’s very hard to achieve in the life we are living, especially if you’re trying to run a business. So, you kind of have to train yourself to get inspired regardless of what’s going around you. That’s where more solid methods come in handy like doing collages for example to get my creativity going or the visual research process. These are all methods that allow me to get inspired.

You are quite new to the industry – what is your vision for the future of your brand?
I hope to create a community around the brand, where people can relate to one another and create a safe space for them to express themselves and share a part of themselves. This vision is not limited to a certain nationality, age group or gender but rather to all people. That leaves infinite room for expansion plans taking the brand internationally, targeting a completely different consumer and lots of collaborations with artists, creatives and brands.
What is the biggest challenge you are facing now?
I think the biggest challenge I am currently facing is delegating; how to let go when you want to make sure everything is done right and trust that the people around will get the job done and get it done well. Building a team around you, where everyone is operating with a clear vision is not something you achieve in a day so I am currently working on that.

Who is the woman that you design clothes for?
I think the Autonomie woman is a brave woman who’s not afraid to experience something new. She likes to take chances. She’s bold, feminine and a strong woman, but most of all she’s human and her life experiences are what makes her unique, just like the rest of us.
Do you have a favourite piece from the Ukiyo collection?
I would have to say it’s the multi-layered skirt. It consists of four different fabrics in different lengths and they just all come together effortlessly.
What’s in the pipeline for the rest of the year?
We have finished designing the fall/winter collection which is currently in sampling. I think it’s going to be great! The plan is to focus more on brand communication to make sure people really have a grasp of the story and vision
What is the motto you live by?
“Every great dream begins with a dreamer,” I say that because I believe we all have to start somewhere and that big things are earned with consistency and hard work. But before all of that, we have to allow ourselves to dream, to follow our passion and dare to take a chance on ourselves.
Who is a woman you would love to dress?
I would say Cher she’s very inspiring and definitely a big style icon.
How would you describe your brand in one word?
Fearless.

What is a message you would send to readers to tell them why they should go out and buy your designs?
I think the brand makes clothes that are meant to make you feel something, inspire you and empower you. There is a piece for every single event or occasion in this collection, whether it’s going to work or attending a cocktail party. So go shop and feel inspired!
Throughout history, Panerai’s connection to the sea has been intrinsically linked to the heritage of the brand and been a core value of its DNA moving forward. The Italian watchmaker started its journey in the 1800s, supplying technical watches to the Royal Italian Navy. These now iconic diving watches were the start of the brand’s beautiful connection to our oceans and today that chapter continues as Panerai announces a new partnership with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO. This collaboration will develop programs and actions with the final objective of developing transformative solutions to the existing and future challenges that face the ocean.
The collaboration with IOC-UNESCO is further evidence that sustainability is an essential part of the company’s purpose, and this is reflected in the latest novelties that were presented at Watches and Wonders, especially the Submersible eLAB-ID™ watch which is made almost entirely from recycled materials.
The goal now for Panerai is embracing the future and being a leader in its field. Taking on the challenge is CEO Jean-Marc Pontroué. Since taking on the role in 2018, Pontroué has pursued a vision of respecting the brand’s heritage and values but continuing to move forward into the future to produce watches that truly benefit today’s customer. As we talk to Pontroué we discover more about the latest launches and the next steps for the Italian watchmaker.
Tell us about the feedback you have received from the 2021 Watches & Wonders presentation so far?
All the feedback received from the press has been extremely positive as we were able to launch several products all characterized by strong stories. The novelty that created the biggest buzz was the Submersible eLAB-ID™, the watch with the highest percentage of recycled-based material ever made. We are very proud of this project as it allows us to open a new chapter in our history, bringing environmental awareness and more circular practices in the watchmaking industry.

Luminor Chrono Luna Rossa
What is the main focus of Panerai for 2021?
Firstly, the Ecologico project. Our work so far is just the beginning with the launch of the concept watch and the UNESCO partnership. Throughout this year we will have important moments with our ambassadors and partners but also international events, to launch new activities and sensitize the audience. Then Panerai has the big challenge of the Piccolo Due, facing new territory with an audience that is constantly growing and showing its interest in our watches and lifestyle. To amaze and surprise this new and sophisticated target is one of our most important missions of 2021.
Tell us some of the highlights of the new novelties and why did you decide to launch these watches at this time?
This year we decided to broaden our chronograph product line, particularly because it is the sportiest complication ever and it is an essential tool to track not only time but also the results of challenges. All Luminor Chrono Novelties reaffirm Panerai’s role in the sphere of chronography and provide the right timepiece to ensure a long-lasting accuracy in every moment of life.
In your opinion what makes a watch an icon?
A watch can be described as an icon because of its history, the storytelling that has been shaped around it and its most distinctive traits. Panerai collectors and enthusiasts consider our brand as an icon due to its recognizable design: the crown protecting device of the Luminor, the sandwich dial, the SuperLuminova: Panerai is unmistakable.

Luminor Chrono Monopulsante
How important is it to you to express the brand’s Italian heritage through its timepieces?
Panerai has always been known for its strong bond with the Italian Navy, as that is what we first started producing timepieces for. For this reason, it is important to keep this relationship alive because I think it defines a big part of our brand’s history: what Panerai is and a source of inspiration for what Panerai will be.
Tell us more about Panerai’s partnership with UNESCO and the importance of this for the brand moving forward?
From the very beginning, Panerai’s destiny was inseparable from the marine environment. With its history of inventing state-of-the-art instruments for the Italian Navy and daring modern-day heroes, the brand’s watchmaking heritage is derived from its profound respect for the ocean. Partnering with IOC-UNESCO is a milestone on the road of Panerai’s achievement of its brand mission. This collaboration contains a futuristic vision, as we will develop a programme of work around ocean literacy to ensure that citizens, stakeholders, and institutions understand the interaction with the ocean and apply this knowledge to develop transformative solutions toward building a more sustainable, equitable society. Sustainability has always been an essential part of Panerai’s purpose, and Panerai is willing to be the being one of the first in the watch industry to raise awareness towards such an important topic as well as changing the rules.
The Submersible eLAB-ID watch is a first for the industry – is this a taste of what’s to come from Panerai moving forward? On a broader level, what would you like to see happen in the luxury industry regarding sustainability?
The eLAB-ID™ is undoubtedly a rule-breaking masterpiece in Panerai’s history and it emphasises the deep concern of Panerai towards the status of the global environmental crisis. Our goal is not only to create sustainable watches but to develop a strong network of suppliers who are all eager to work towards creating a more sustainable future based on a circular use of natural resources. Through this Open Source Project, we hope that our competitors will follow our path and will start producing more sustainable products, also supporting environmental projects.

Luminor Chrono
How important are strategic partnerships to the brand and what does Panerai look for when working with partners such as the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team?
Strategic partnerships are essential to every brand because they allow brands to step into new segments and to discover new territories. When Panerai started working with the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team, we immediately felt a strong connection, because of the love and passion for the sea and the importance of precision. For us it’s important to work with a brand that shares our values, otherwise, we can’t align our goals.
How does Panerai create a lifestyle around its products and how are you continuing to communicate with your clients today?
All Panerai watches are characterized by strong storytelling and the goal is to create ad-hoc stories, accenting the distinguishing traits of each watch. During Watches & Wonders 2021 we presented the new Piccolo Due Madreperla PAM1280, characterised by a vibrant and dynamic attitude. We keep alive the conversation with our customers through events and client meetings and try to maximize this interaction through all the available touchpoints.

Luminor Chrono
What is a major challenge you have faced throughout your time at Panerai and how did you overcome it?
Since I was appointed CEO of Panerai the biggest challenge I’ve experienced has been the global pandemic. It took us by surprise because, even though we were aware of what was happening in China, we never imagined that it would arrive so quickly in the rest of the world. Initially, it was a nightmare to handle because there were different regulations, principles and protocols on lockdowns and partial lockdowns in different countries and cities, but the aim was to keep the organization safe.
What can you tell us about Panerai in the Middle East and what can we look forward to?
The Middle East market is a very promising one and it will continue to have a lot of customers and passionate collectors. We don’t see a market for just the next six months. We see what the brand will be like in a decade — how many doors, how many boutiques, how many people, how many after-sales service points. And 2021 will see the opening of new pop-ups and boutiques.

Submersible eLAB-ID
What is a message you would send to your clients in the region?
For Panerai, The Middle East has always been a very interesting area characterised by a high number of watch lovers with refined taste. We can’t wait to open the new pop-ups and boutiques, meet all our customers and plan ad-hoc experiences and events there, to enhance our presence in the market.

As she prepares for an exciting summer ahead, we discover more about her ambitions for the future, her dreams of a gold member and what it means to her to be a Breitling Surfer Squad Member.

This past year has been difficult in so many ways, what has been your experience of the pandemic and is there a lesson you’ve learnt or anything you will change moving forward?
We had a really strict lockdown in Australia. There were no tourists and we had to get permission if we wanted to leave. It was a crazy situation. But saying that, we had many luxuries, in the sense that we were able to go about our daily lives normally, we didn’t even have to wear masks. I surfed a lot and it was the first time since I left high school, that I stayed in one place for that length of time and I loved it. I was able to spend quality time with my family and friends which was an amazing experience and it made me appreciate home as well as appreciate the luxury of travel. I was able to completely focus on my health and it felt good to have a routine. It can be quite hard to keep a routine on tour because I’m always travelling and moving to the next place. So after the lockdown, when the tour restarted, I was feeling super strong and ready to go.
Now you’re back to work, what’s in the pipeline for the rest of the year?
We started the season in Hawaii and then we just finished a competition in Australia and an event in California. I’m currently fifth in the world ranking and the focus is to be in the final five for the World Title playoffs in September. Other than that, my main focus is the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. There is less than a month to go and I’m so excited that it is happening because we weren’t sure if it would go ahead. I couldn’t imagine if it had been completely cancelled, especially for athletes who have spent their whole lives training for it, it would have been heart-breaking. So hopefully, it all runs according to plan and I would love to win a gold medal – that would be amazing!

What’s your schedule going to be like over the next month while training for the Olympics?
The waves in Japan are quite small so my training is about focusing on making sure that I’ve got really good light, fast, dynamic equipment. Leading up to the event I’ll be doing a lot more cardio so I feel fit and light. I’m quite tall, so it’s important to make sure that when I get to the sorts of conditions they have in Japan, that even though I’m quite tall, I’m still really fast and dynamic and that I have confidence in myself. Working on my mental game is also important so that I’m not completely overwhelmed by the fact we are at the Olympics!
Going back to the beginning – what first inspired you to become a surfer and how did your journey begin?
My father taught me how to surf. He has always loved surfing and still is today – he still surfs at 68 years old! He has been a great role model and he’s always been fit and healthy. My mother never got into surfing but she was so supportive of me. She would drive me to the beach every day and my two older sisters surf as well. In Australia, surfing is one of the first things they teach you growing up and I fell in love with it straight away. I started competing when I was around 12 years old and I knew then that I wanted to be one of the best surfers in the world and I wanted to win world titles.

Who’s been your biggest supporter along the way?
I have had so much support from all my family even though they’re not always on the road with me. My eldest sister Whitney worked as my manager, and it was great because we are close in age and we’re really close friends (and we haven’t killed each other yet!). But I actually like to do a lot of the events by myself with just my surf coach because I’ve always really thought that less is more, as long as I’m having fun and enjoying it.
What are some of the challenges that you’ve faced along the way in terms of being accepted as a female surfer in a male-dominated sport and how have you overcome them?
Yes, surfing has been a very male-dominated sport for a long time. I grew up watching the older generations of women fighting for what was rightfully theirs and what they deserved. It was tough to see them making sacrifices that they shouldn’t have had to make. They should have been able to just focus on their performance and getting the results they wanted, but instead, they were fighting for their rights to be equal. It’s so inspiring when I look at it now because they were doing it for future generations. They knew that if they put in the hard work, then people like myself would benefit and I can see that happening now. We are reaping the rewards of their hard work and their dedication to women in sport. As of 2019, surfing was the first sport in the United States to have equal prize pay across all major disciplines in the World Surf League. It’s incredible to be part of a sport that wants to make those changes and to lead the way. And it’s funny because surfing is often seen as a rebellious sport, but here we are leading the way and setting the standard of what should be normal.
Is there any female athlete who you see as a role model or inspiration?
I love Lisa Anderson. She was my favourite! Layne Beachley, she won a lot of world titles – and I’m currently sitting equal with her in that – I’d love to win another one! I love Serena Williams and everything she does. She’s incredible. Naomi Osaka is doing some great things at the moment and I’m a big fan of tennis. The US women’s soccer team, particularly Megan Rapinoe is an inspiration and all of those women are still fighting for equality in sport. I hope that they can look at our sport and see how it’s working.

Is there a moment in your career that you can look back on as a turning point or a key moment that changed the course of your career?
In my first four years on tour, I qualified as a rookie and then I won four straight titles. And then I had a bad assault incident at my home and it rocked my world. After that, I couldn’t find my rhythm for a while and I lost the World Title the next year. That was the first time I had to dig deep to find the motivation to come back and win. It took me two years, but I fought hard and won. So I would say that winning that fifth World Title was a defining moment in my career and was the most rewarding. I’m super proud and I think during the darkest times, and through the most difficult challenges, that’s when you surprise yourself the most and you come out stronger and learn the most about yourself.
What do you think of the new Breitling Superocean Heritage ’57 Pastel Paradise Capsule Collection and which colour would you like to wear?
I live in a Breitling Superocean! I’m wearing one now [the Breitling Superocean Automatic 36 in orange], this is the one I compete in. I’m also a huge fan of vintage surfing and colours so the new Superocean Heritage ’57 Pastel Paradise Capsule Collection is very cool because of the pastel colours. I think because I’m blonde I would go for the mint green – I actually like to call it surf green! They’re really beautiful. I think that watches in general, are usually renowned to be quite strong jewellery pieces that are often gold or silver, but what I love about Breitling is the way it incorporates that fashion aspect at the highest quality using these kinds of materials and colours.

Breitling Superocean Heritage ’57 Pastel Paradise Capsule Collection
Which watch do you wear from day to night?
When I’m surfing I always wear the Superocean Automatic 36 and for the evening I love the Breitling Premier Automatic 40. It’s a men’s watch but it’s beautiful, simple and classic. When I’m not surfing I live in this watch.
What do you look for in a sports watch when you’re surfing?
Firstly, a really good wristband that you know will stay on and won’t irritate your wrist. Some of the Breitling Superocean watches have a stopwatch, which is handy. Being lightweight is important and just knowing that it will stay on my wrist and be comfortable.
What is a watch that you’d like to own that you don’t have yet?
There are so many but I love the Breitling Navitimer. I love the design; they are really beautiful. I would like to have one of those.
Sustainability is a huge topic now that needs to be addressed and we know it is something Breitling is very passionate about, particularly when it comes to the oceans – what are your thoughts on this and what is something you would like to see happen moving forward?
As a surfer, I believe it’s my duty to educate people from my first-hand experiences and to let them know how our oceans are being damaged on a daily basis, both from the big industries but also by our everyday decisions. I think it’s so important for us as surfers to raise awareness of the issues that people may not think about because they don’t see them first hand. As surfers, we can help people to understand what they should think about when they buy a product. Where it came from, and where it goes when you’re finished with it.
I love working with Sally Fitzgibbons and Kelly Slater in the Breitling Surfer Squad and we’ve done some awesome beach clean-ups. There are a lot of communities that live on the beach, but they may not understand the impact of their lifestyles and the way that what they do can have an impact on the ecosystem around them. So it’s cool that we have the opportunities to educate people on that and it’s amazing that Breitling is a genuine brand that really cares about it and wants to share an authentic message. The work they have done, with Kelly Slater’s company Outerknown is amazing with the ECONYL® straps that are made from recycled fishing nets. I love the colours of those straps. It makes me feel proud to represent a company that wants to work with people who care about the future. There’s a lot of talk out there, but to actually align with people and collaborate with companies who genuinely want to get dirty to actually clean up the beaches and put the work in, is really important.
What would you still like to achieve that you haven’t done yet?
Oh, a gold medal! I always wanted to go to The Olympics when I was a young girl and then when I started surfing I thought ‘okay, it’s never going to happen. And, then in 2018, when they announced that surfing would be part of the Olympic Games it was amazing. And here we are. So I’ll see what I can do, but gold would be awesome!
How did you feel when they announced that surfing was going to be an Olympic sport?
I thought it would happen but I didn’t think it would happen within my career. I think the Olympic Committee is looking to find relevant sports to bring in a younger crowd. They now have sports like surfing, skateboarding, and breakdancing. Personally, it gave me new inspiration, a new goal. Of course, I’ve always wanted to win a world title and to keep winning them, but to have a newfound goal, is a whole new world – it’s amazing.

Where’s your favourite place to surf in the world?
There are so many. I love Hawaii, Indonesia, and Australia. We have incredible waves in Australia.
When you’re off duty and you’re not surfing, how would you describe your style?
Beach chic. Or tomboy chic. I like to feel comfortable because that’s obviously when I’m feeling the most confident. I wear a lot of Roxy clothes and if I could live in a bikini all day I would! I like to wear simple gold jewellery and of course a cool watch. And I love colour!

Just make sure you save room for dessert!
Lighthouse is the island’s fine dining restaurant and one not to be missed. This five-star over-water destination offers classic cuisine with an innovative tropical twist. This signature restaurant is known across the islands for its creative approach to food. A speciality menu combines locally sourced seafood, with modern fusion cuisine and a touch of Asian and Mediterranean influences. Some of our favourite dishes included the Lobster “Wellington”, the Pan Seared Lobster Medallions and the Asian Spice Grilled Mahi Mahi Fillets.

Lime Restaurant
The Lime restaurant will be your breakfast destination where you can begin your day soaking up the ocean views while enjoying your morning coffee. In the evening the à la carte menu offers enticing dishes from around the world. From Thai speciality dishes to Maldivian dishes to Italian pasta dishes – there’s something for every taste.

Not forgetting your mind and spirit, private yoga and meditation sessions can be arranged in the air-conditioned spa pavilion, on the Villa deck, the Lighthouse deck or at sunrise and sunset on the Sandbank, and the exclusive fitness centre invites you to work out overlooking the lush green gardens.
Leisure Activities

While some may want to opt for complete relaxation during their stay at Baros, other guests might be intrigued by the numerous activities on offer. The island is surrounded by an impressive natural coral reef that can be easily swam to, meaning snorkelling and diving are some of the most popular activities on offer. As beginners, we opted for the easier option of snorkelling and we were taken by surprise.

Under the supervision of our guide, we discovered the vast reef which was surrounded by thousands of fish and turtles. From the small and colourful to the unusual and not forgetting the sharks (don’t worry the sharks in this area do not attack humans). This once in a lifetime experience will be remembered forever. If being in the water isn’t your thing stay above the waves with a sunset cruise to watch one of the most beautiful sunsets you’ll ever see. With private bookings available this unique excursion can be tailored to the needs of each guest.
Bespoke Services

One of the most unique aspects of Baros is its unique, personalised experiences. Whether it’s a special meal, a bespoke excursion, private spa or yoga session or a romantic sailing cruise by dhoni, a traditional Maldivian vessel, the resort will find something extraordinary for every guest. During our trip, one of the highlights was breakfast on the Piano Deck. A free-standing wooden deck in the middle of the ocean this idyllic location is perfect for an ultra-exclusive breakfast, lunch or dinner. Accessed via boat and dine surrounded by bright blue seas as you soak up the tranquillity and feast on freshly prepared meals. Or visit the Sandbank for a private picnic or BBQ in the middle of the sea. Set menus are available or the resort’s culinary team will prepare and serve special dishes according to guests’ desires. This is perfect for those looking for complete privacy. As experts in this field Baros Maldives can cater to the individual needs of every guest to offer a once in a lifetime experience.

Giorgio Armani presented his Fall/Winter Armani Privé Haute Couture collection “Shine” in Paris on 6th July 2021.
Using carefully selected, hand-painted fabrics that flow almost like liquid, the designer created a sense of luminosity as models glided down the runway at the Italian Embassy.

Satins and silks we interwoven with ultra-fine metallic thread, while light fabrics used on evening gowns seem to almost float as they caught the air. Embroideries sparkled and created a sense of magic, almost like a beautiful garden on a summer’s day.
A soft sense of femininity surrounds outfits composed of long skirts and short bodices, juxtaposed with masculinity from the classic Armani pinstripes.

The colour palette features soft pastel tones with a hint of statement colours including jade green, indigo and pomegranate pink which add some vibrancy.
Footwear came in the form of nude-toned sock boots studded with crystals, low and elongated shoes, fabric ballet flats and pumps with ultra-slim heels. Small clutches were covered with stones for an extra touch of sparkle and other bags were made from feathers, continuing the theme of weightlessness.

In a first for the brand, the iconic design has included some pieces from the previous Haute Couture season with a message of how Haute Couture can transcend seasons.
This collection is both timeless and modern, transcending trends and stereotypes to create something that is desired by women of all generations.

Virginie Viard’s Fall/Winter 2021-22 Haute Couture collection for Chanel was inspired by that magical moment where the worlds of fashion and art collide.
Presented at the Palais Galliera, City of Paris Fashion Museum it was bold bright and beautiful; like a painting. The museum is currently hosting an exhibition dedicated to Gabrielle Chanel so what better destination to show this collection.

It made perfect sense for this show, bursting with colours, to be held at the Palais Galliera, City of Paris Fashion Museum, a veritable institution of art and fashion, where the exhibition dedicated to Gabrielle Chanel continues. “Because I love seeing colour in the greyness of winter,” said Virginie Viard. “I really wanted a particularly colourful collection that was very embroidered, something warm.”

She continued: “It was when I rediscovered these portraits of Gabrielle Chanel dressed up in black or white 1880s-style dresses, that I immediately thought about tableaux,” explains Virginie Viard. “Works by Berthe Morisot, Marie Laurencin and Édouard Manet. There are impressionist-inspired dresses, skirts that look like paintings and a long white satin dress punctuated with black bows like Morisot’s…”

There were of course key Chanel pillars throughout the designs. Tweed came in colourful hues, tulle skirts added femininity and classic box blazer jackets and skirt suits were juxtaposed with floaty fabrics of dresses.

Like an Impressionist painting, the sequinned tweed of a coat seems to be made up of a multitude of paint strokes. Blouses embroidered with mauve and pink sequinned motifs, or with little red, blue and yellow daisies on a black background, are tucked into low-waisted skirts in multicolour striped tweed. Pale pink and yellow tulle pompoms embellish a black paletot jacket, just like splashes of paint.

“There are dresses embroidered with water lilies, a jacket in a black tweed crafted from feathers with red and pink flowers,” says Virginie Viard. “I was also thinking about English gardens. I like to mix a touch of England with a very French style. It’s like blending the masculine and the feminine, which is what I’ve done with this collection too. That twist is very much a part of who I am.”

Growing up in Colombia in a household full of women with a deep love for the ritual of beauty, Tata Harper realized that self-care was a luxury that everyone deserved.
On an endless search for non-toxic yet high-performing skincare products following her stepfather’s cancer diagnosis, Tata decided to create them herself. Working with the top botanists and chemists in the industry she embarked on a five-year journey to develop her unique formulation process and propriety bio-engineering technology for creating her signature Complex Formulas, grounded in the philosophy that more ingredients equal more results. Using the latest technology, the full range of products are formulated with the highest-quality natural ingredients available. Created from start to finish on Harper’s certified-organic farm in Vermont Champlain Valley, nothing in production is outsourced, allowing Tata to oversee every aspect of production to ensure maximum freshness and quality. Every Complex Formula is engineered with the highest possible quantity of precious skin innovative ingredients, captured at their most effective peak for maximum potency and meticulously packed into a small green bottle.
In just five year’s Tata Harper Skincare has become a global phenomenon, and has earned the entrepreneur a huge catalogue of fans all around the world. After launching in the Middle East last year, Harper’s products are hugely popular with the local market thanks to their transparency and authenticity. This summer Harper launches Superkind; a new range of products aimed at those with particularly sensitive skin. As the new products arrive on shelves we discover more as we meet with the founder herself.

What can you tell us about the new Superkind range?
I am very excited about the launch of Superkind. This is
going to be a game-changer for reactive skin. As you know, at Tata Harper we’re obsessed with the science behind our products. What we do is already difficult, but the engineering of Superkind was SO much harder! We had to add even more formulation requirements to how we work. We had to meet all our green beauty standards, plus the line needed to be completely hypoallergenic. We wanted to be super-comprehensive to minimise the chances of people being in touch with any potential stressors. So we excluded more than 80 of the most common skin triggers including soy, wheat/gluten, nuts, fragrances, and harsh acids. The whole line is vegan and we also made the products fragrance-free so no essential oils were included, which was such a big departure for us.
It has been amazing creating Superkind and taking a deep dive into the science of reactive skin, and realising that when you use the right filters, meticulously curate the right ingredients, and apply rigorous hypoallergenic testing, you can create powerful skincare for a complicated skin group. We have launched three products, to begin with. They are the essentials: a cleanser, a mask and a moisturiser.

Tell us more about these three products:
I love the Softening Cleanser. It is all about what we call “constructive cleansing”, which is a term we use when we formulate our cleansers as they are more like treatments. This formula was made to support and reinforce the skin barrier, not strip it down. It goes on like a cream and leaves the skin super soft. When you add water it transforms into a beautiful micro-foaming texture which leaves your face feeling clean and hydrated. It is sulphate free and we use a micro-foaming botanical blend made up of cassava tapioca and natural plant surfactants. The formula has a total of 18 active ingredients that offer a lot of benefits including vitamins A, B, C and E.
The Radiance Mask is our way of making sure clients with reactive skin get to enjoy the benefits of our best-selling product; our beloved resurfacing mask. When you have particularly sensitive skin, achieving a glowy look is tricky, so we had to look at the changes that needed to be made to our original mask. It still has a jelly texture that our clients love, but it is creamier, softer, and really comforting. The whole idea of the mask is its delicate refining technology that gives you a glow but also helps prevent over-exfoliation.
And finally, there is the Fortifying Moisturizer. This has a total of 28 active ingredients and this formula is the most complex out of the three. It was voted our silkiest moisturiser by our team. It’s substantial but weightless and the formula includes extremophile endurance technology, with three extremophile plants, meaning plants that have adapted in nature to withstand extreme environments and condition, so each one has a unique superpower to help the skin endure our modern way of living.
It has Vitamins A, B and C and a lot of peptides, as well as mulberry leaf complex; an Asian ingredient that promotes cellular turnover in a way that’s similar to retinol in the sense that it strengthens the skin’s structure for a firming effect and it’s also shown to decrease lines by 23% in 28 days.
Why did you find it important to create a range specifically for people with sensitive skin?
Superkind was inspired by a lot of conversations I was having with my friends and a lot of people with reactive skin, and the reality is that today, the modern environment is full of stressors and allergens, and they are making people more prone to reacting. What I’ve also realised is that people with reactive skin are afraid to try anything that they consider to be too powerful. They are traumatised by the vicious cycle of flare-ups and they end up with this very simple routine that tends to be quite synthetic with a lot of products found at pharmacies that are not very efficacious when it comes to antiaging. So solving this problem became a challenge, for me and my team. And we wanted to find a formula for reactive skin that’s also 100% natural like everything that we do.
How did the process of developing this product differ from the process when creating other Tata Harper products?
It has been an amazing experience taking a deep dive into the science of reactive skin. You realise that when you use the right filters, meticulously curate the right ingredients, and apply rigorous hypoallergenic testing, you can actually create powerful skincare for a complicated skin group. One that just happens to have a lot of restrictions, is more prone to reacting and is compromised more easily. It is a skincare line for people that love using anti-ageing products but are apprehensive and think they are going to break out, react and go through this vicious cycle of reactions.

The ingredients in the range are very important, how did you go about sourcing them and what was the thought process behind sourcing them?
While researching for Superkind, we discovered 36 new unique high-performance ingredients from 13 countries including Chile, Peru, Mexico, India and Japan. Our formulations for this collection feature new green technology that provides anti-ageing benefits, barrier reinforcement, allergen microfiltes, etc. It’s been meticulously curated for reactive skin.
We created two specific proprietary complexes for the collection. The first one is a tetra lipid complex that contains omega 3, 6, and 9 to rebuild the lipid layer. It also has a blend of apple seed, grape seed, evening primrose and phytosqualane. The second complex is the counter stress complex to soothe hyperactive skin. It features a lot of strengthening minerals; magnesium, copper, iron, zinc. This is actually a blend of five flowers and herbs that come from our garden in Vermont, blended with powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatories.
We worked hard to find alternative active ingredients that give the effects of commonly used ingredients. For example, we opted to use mulberry leaf complex in lieu of retinol as it acts in a similar way without the harsh side effects. Our Superkind formulations also use extremophile endurance technology from three plants that have adapted in nature to withstand extreme environments and conditions. Each one has a unique superpower to help the skin endure our modern way of living and are especially fantastic for reactive skin.
We also used two new green technologies deriving from sugar. It is very interesting since we all know how bad sugar is for the skin when eaten. We used a sugar carbohydrate complex, which is a new moisture-binding technology that stimulates the production of ceramides to bind water into the skin and keep it there as long as possible. We also used a new technology of sugar prebiotics that biostimulates the ecoflora and prevents a very specific strain of bad bacteria from disrupting the skin’s natural defence mechanisms.
Tell us a little about Tata Harper in the Middle East – how has the brand been received so far and what do you hope to achieve?
Our mission is to make people’s lives better and this means making our products accessible to customers around the world. It’s been amazing engaging with an even broader audience of men and women who deserve to look and feel amazing, without having to compromise their health. It means the world to me to now be able to share this philosophy with our customers in the Middle East.
People around the world are looking to make better lifestyle choices and Arab women are no exception. They are highly educated consumers, part of a wellness movement that demands that the products they are using and putting on their skin are beyond authentic, of the highest quality, and really work. They appreciate well-made, long-lasting products and they embrace skincare, makeup and self-care. Arab women expect phenomenal results from the products they invest in, which is why they were pulling us to their region to cater to their skincare, grooming and beauty needs. With the level of potent actives that are in all of our products, it was only natural for us to start the process of bringing Tata Harper to this new customer. It has been a long process, but we are so excited for our products to be available in this region.

From the entire range, which products would you recommend for women in the region?
It’s important to switch up your skincare routine to adapt to extreme climates and your current skin concerns. I feel that a lot of people think of cleansing as a very basic step, but it is critical for your skin’s health. In extreme environments, oil and dirt tend to build up on the skin’s surface so I recommend starting with our Nourishing Oil Cleanser, a multivitamin cleansing oil that breaks down build-ups and dissolves makeup without stripping for soft, supple skin. Then I would follow with a deep cleansing treatment like our Purifying Cleanser to cleanse and detox the skin. This is great if you are have clogged pores from humidity.
Crème Riche is another extreme climate must-have, it’s a rich moisturising cream that delivers youth-preserving hydration and minimises the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. I use it every night as the last step of my routine. It’s packed with antioxidants and a Sugar Carbohydrate Complex that mimics carbohydrates in the skin and is shown to support hyaluronic acid and ceramide production, as well as promote long-lasting moisture. It targets visible signs of ageing with natural antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and vitamin F to give you instantly soft, supple and youthful-looking skin.
Are there any tips you can share related to the skin issues caused by wearing facemasks?
Something that has become a big concern for me during the pandemic is “maskne”. Maskne happens when your skin is irritated from the friction and heat that builds up under your mask from breathing and sweating. I have discovered a few tips and tricks that really work to diminish that irritation and help your skin feel more comfortable. I have switched to wearing silk masks and my favourite is the one that we created with Jonathon Simkhai. If your skin has become sensitive or blemish-prone from wearing a mask, the 100% silk material is ultra-soft and breathable on broken down, uncomfortable skin. My second easy step is curating a skincare routine that works to fight breakouts. I have been loving using a combo from our clarifying line to target blemishes and redness: Clarifying Cleanser, Clarifying Mask, and Clarifying Moisturizer.
I think that skincare is the best makeup and I’ve been avoiding putting on anything dramatic or heavy to give my skin a break. Heat and sweat tend to accumulate under your mask and refraining from wearing makeup when you are out will help your skin breathe and minimise bacteria build-up that leads to breakouts. When I am home and feel like glamouring up, I love to apply our Illuminating Eye Cream and Illuminating Moisturizer which are formulated with diamond dust to give your skin a subtle glow without any glitter.
What do you find it important to use 100 per cent natural ingredients and what is a message you would send to the industry regarding this?
My stepfather was diagnosed with cancer, and through helping him change his lifestyle I started to examine everything I was putting in and on my body. For the longest time, natural beauty was thought to be simple and low quality – a lot of the textures and experiences weren’t designed for a serious skincare client like me. Typically you would find natural beauty in food stores and apothecaries where you don’t find high-quality products with the technology you expect. At the same time, when I went to department stores they had a few natural ingredients that were mixed with synthetics and chemicals. I wanted to fuse both worlds and create products that were 100% natural but made with high quality, potent ingredients. When we first started, formulating high-tech, ingredient-packed products with exclusively natural ingredients was a challenge. Then, once we launched our first products, the challenge we faced was overcoming this old misconception that naturals weren’t effective. It was an uphill battle. A lot of the natural ingredients to [help with] wrinkles were available — algae, roses, orchids — and the legacy brands had been using them for decades. What wasn’t available was everything else that you need, like emulsifiers, preservatives, stabilisers, pH balancers, thickeners. For a long time, the industry has been relying on chemicals and more cost-effective ways of going about things. In the majority of these cases, the controversial chemicals are exactly those — preservatives and all of those things that no one really talks about — and we as consumers have no idea that they even exist. So really it was a case of how do we do all of the stuff that synthetic formulas do using natural materials?
From the very beginning, we refused to use any synthetic or hazardous chemicals, even in the extraction processes of the ingredients we process ourselves or buy from our suppliers around the world. The ingredients we grow on the farm are hand-picked, then completely dried. Then we do a process called ‘garbling,’ where the ingredients are rubbed by hand on a screen to break them down. Finally, we combine them with a carrier oil and gently heat them to extract all the oils and key nutrients. Then they’re strained and become our Farm Grown Beauty Complex before they are bottled up and shipped off straight from the farm. This is farm to face skin care because we use the real thing, the original natural ingredients, and make products that are completely fresh when they reach our customers. We are beyond clean and more than natural. We do so much more than just avoid a few controversial ingredients. All of our formulas are 100% natural and non-toxic and every single ingredient we use comes from nature. That’s green beauty.

Where in the world do you love to source ingredients and do you have a favourite to work with?
Every single ingredient we use comes from nature from our farm in Vermont and all over the world. Our core ingredients are calendula, alfalfa, borage, arnica, and meadowsweet which are native to our part of the world. Recently I have been obsessed with neuropeptides which are powerful anti-ageing ingredients. They are so effective that they are sometimes referred to as natural alternatives to injectables. We source our quadruple neuropeptide formula from France, Madagascar, The Middle East and Asia to deliver the ultimate smoothing effect in our most potent Supernaturals collection. We source only the highest quality ingredients ( over 300 ingredients from over 70 countries) and the most innovative natural technology available and include as many as we can in every formula to make our products as effective as possible. We are completely vertically integrated, so we formulate, batch, fill, and ship all of our products from our farm in Vermont. The ingredients that we don’t grow on our farm are sourced sustainably and ethically from the rest of the world.
What is one thing you would like to change in the skincare industry?
It takes both consumers and brands to take action to protect people and the planet. The beauty industry is responding to consumers by making eco-friendly products and packaging a reality for those who love their beauty products, but also love the earth
Tell us a little about Tata Harper as a person – what inspired you to start your own skincare line and what motivates you today?
I was born and raised in Colombia by my mother and grandmother who were obsessed with beauty. After high school, I wanted to study fashion, but my mother encouraged me to attend school in Mexico to become an industrial engineer. Then, I took this road of being an entrepreneur in beauty. I never thought that I would be in beauty, even though I’ve always loved it. We started Tata Harper Skincare on our organic farm in Vermont in 2010 and since we launched our first product line, we have grown into a global business. From the inception of the company, I have been unwilling to compromise or take shortcuts. If I had chosen to take the easy route or was willing to take no for an answer, Tata Harper Skincare would not be what it is today. I am always striving for the best, most innovative solution to the problem, and I won’t settle for a lesser answer.
What is the motto you live by?
Love yourself, love the planet.
Where would you like to see Tata Harper as a brand in five years time?
We will continue our mission of improving the lives of others, educating the public on toxic chemicals, and working towards our goal of being 100% sustainable. We’re always looking for the most updated, high-powered green technology out there. Green beauty is evolving a lot and very quickly. I also believe that natural beauty needs to go beyond the ingredients used in the products, it has to be about putting those natural formulas into packaging that doesn’t pose a risk to the environment. Sustainability in the beauty industry is, of course, in a better place now than it was ten years ago but it’s still not enough. I believe the future of sustainability is in reusable packaging, which is even better than recycling. We have recently launched our first refillable product, the Water-Lock Moisturizer which is our first step to becoming reusable beauty instead of throwaway beauty.
What is your morning skincare routine?
I have always looked at skincare as self-care. It is a ritual for me every morning and night and my time to unwind. It’s important to take a little extra time to focus on yourself. For my morning routine, I always start by exfoliating with Regenerating Cleanser – exfoliating daily really lets my skin breath and glow since it gets rid of any build-up that accumulates overnight, it also helps products absorb better. I follow with Hydrating Floral Essence to help prep my skin for treatment and help my serums penetrate deeper. Then it’s all about layering — I use Elixir Vitae on my whole face, next I’ll use Elixir Vitae Eye Serum, and then Repairative Moisturizer.
And what do you put on your skin before you go to sleep at night?
At night, I always start with double-cleansing. First, I use Nourishing Oil Cleanser to get rid of that top layer of dirt and grime from the day, then I follow with the Purifying Cleanser to cleanse and detox my skin. Then, I use Hydrating Floral Essence. For serum, I use Elixir Vitae on my face and Boosted Contouring Serum on my neck. I like a thicker eye cream at night, so I usually use the Boosted Contouring Eye Balm. I also like a richer moisturizer at night, so I finish with Crème Riche.
What is your “can’t live without” product to travel with?
Elixir Vitae Serum. This serum is like your daily dose of injectables! Packed with 72 high-performance ingredients, Elixir Vitae Serum is my desert island product. It provides a visible filling effect with natural redensifiers and targets severe signs of ageing to restore the look of plump, youthful-looking skin
What is a product you would still like to create?
While we currently don’t offer our own Tata Harper Skincare sunscreen, it’s definitely something we’d think about launching in the future!
What is a message you can share with our readers to help them understand the world of Tata Harper?
Beauty is not a chore, it’s about self-care. Even as a busy mum and juggling a million things, it’s important to always try to have some time for myself. It helps me to reconnect and slow down so I am ready for whatever the day brings. I’m truly my own customer, which has been such an asset – when I created the line, I knew what I was looking for when it came to performance, experience, and safety, and I hope you will get to experience the same every time you use our products.
Tata Harper Skincare is available on Ounass.com, at Bloomingdale’s Dubai Mall and Harvey Nichols Dubai, and is distributed exclusively in the Middle East by Wild Distribution.
Dior presented its Fall/Winter 2021-22 Haute Couture collection in Paris with its first physical haute couture show since before the pandemic began.
Revisiting the true values of couture after a period of turmoil in the world, Maria Grazia Chiuri embraces the beauty of craftsmanship with her attention focused on embroidery, pleats, traves and hand-woven chains that compose patterns on the body.

The importance of fabric becomes was explored greatly in this collection with the beauty of handmade being embraced more than ever before. Elegant tweeds, soft flowy chiffons and demure silks reinterpret the house’s codes. The book ‘Threads of Life’, by textile artist and curator Clare Hunter, inspired Maria Grazia Chiuri for this collection putting fabric at the forefront.

A collection that was true to the Dior DNA with key elements including the Bar Jacket firmly positioned but given new updated looks through the choice of materials and colours.

Since joining the brand Chiuri has been proud to collaborate with artists and create immersive spaces for her shows that go beyond the idea of fashion. Recalling the Salle aux Broderies in the Colonna Palace in Rome, the work Chambre de Soie, created by French artist Éva Jospin, served as an impressive backdrop for the presentation.

The show notes read: “Couture stirs unsuspected desires and reveals the existence of what we did not know. Like the avant-garde, it renders visible what one does not see. Through a mix of art and extraordinary savoir-faire, it defines the longings of a world in the midst of a profound transformation.”

Just before her seventh birthday Zainab Al-Eqabi and her family faced a horrendous accident at their home in Bagdhad, Iraq. An unexploded bomb, which unbeknown to them, had been in their back garden for more than seven years, ignited and caught Zainab as well as her father and her younger sister in the crossfire.
Zainab’s father was badly injured with many wounds to his body, her younger sister lost part of her finger and Zainab faced a serious injury to her leg. After being admitted to hospital Zainab’s injuries became worse thanks to a mistake made by her doctors and it resulted in her left leg having to be amputated. At the age of seven, with her father in critical condition and her sister injured, Zainab returned home and began adjusting to life with one leg. It was an accident that affected her whole family in such a traumatic way and something that was not easy to move on from. Over 20 years later, after relocating to the UAE, Zainab has found her strength and her path and she is using her story to inspire others. Since moving to Dubai she has pursued a number of sports from swimming to scuba diving to cycling and she has shared her story through her social media platforms with a current following of over 1.5 million. She is a TV presenter on MBC and a pharmacist – yes she does it all! Today, Zainab doesn’t see her disability as a hindrance, rather as an opportunity to share her story and inspire others with her achievements. Here, we discover more about her journey and her great aspirations for the future.

We are very inspired by your story – tell us about some of the challenges you have faced along the way and how you overcame them?
The accident that happened was life-changing for my whole family. For me personally, coming back home as a young girl, now an amputee, in a Middle Eastern society, it was not easy to grow up in a place where there’s very little awareness of these kinds of things. My parents had to do a lot of work to make sure I was a capable, strong person who could have a mindset to keep going. It was a very long journey of self-discovery and I had to keep working on my mindset, my beliefs and my goals and always remember that I shouldn’t be judged by society and I should work on changing these negative stereotypes into positive ones to help the future generations. It was a long journey but I appreciate everything that I have been through. It taught me a lot, it made me who I am and I’m really grateful for that. I appreciate and have so much respect for my parents and what they have done to make sure the whole family came back stronger and united. My mum was a doctor and I respect the fact that she sacrificed her job because after the accident to put her family first and to take care of us. I also have so much appreciation for my siblings who were there through everything. So yes, it was a long journey for the whole family and there were a lot of challenges, but it has made me who I am and I’m so thankful for it.
When you face struggles in life motivation is essential – how have you kept motivated during difficult times?
The answer to this question could differ depending on which stage of my life I’m at, but in general, it would be my passion and my goals. The love for the things I do, the belief of the ones who love me. All of these things really motivate me to keep on going, to take on challenges and to not give up.

This past year has been a difficult one for all – what has been your experience of the global pandemic and what is a lesson you have learned?
I believe each and every one of us has our own story to tell from the pandemic, but at the same time, we all have some similarities linked to the worry about our loved ones, stress, responsibilities etc. not to mention the people we have already lost. I have lost a number of people who were family and friends in other countries and it was really heart-breaking. Unfortunately to this day, I am seeing family and friends whose family members have been hospitalised or are going through a tough time with COVID-19. So it has been tough for all of us and we are still going through it. I hope it will be over very soon.
I have learnt many lessons from this time but the top ones would be to always be thankful – we are blessed with so many things, but we didn’t realise how lucky we are and then COVID-19 made us value the small things so much more. The second is that we are all so closely interconnected across the world and we can influence each other wherever we are. The way COVID-19 spread across the globe showed us how small the world is and we need to remember that the worry and anxiety we are experiencing is happening to everyone and we need to respect and value each other. The third point is to always be there for your loved ones and to appreciate them.
Obviously, the tragic accident when you were very young – what was a turning point in your life and how did you convert this pain into positivity and power?
Sometimes things can happen to you and at the time, you are not aware of the bigger picture. After the accident, I had to do things that were much greater than my ability and grow way beyond my age because of what I had been through and what my family had to face. So turning the pain into positivity and strength was the only option. There was so much I had to witness but the only option was going back to normal life, back to school, being able to socialise again with friends. My mum was always there by my side and my dad was focusing on his own rehabilitation journey but he was still providing us with the support that we needed. I felt that because of what happened that I should become stronger for them. There were of course so many incidents where I broke down and cried and I didn’t understand why I had to be fitted with a prosthetic leg for example, or why I had to use a crutch, but then, day after day, things started to become clearer and challenge after challenge I started to understand that I needed to become stronger. The older I got, the more I wanted to stand in the face of the challenges that society created for me and that could limit me from the things that I want to achieve – my goals, my dreams, my joy, my rights. And to overcome the social barriers that were in front of me, simply because of the fact that I had lost a leg. So the more I grew up I started to realise that I was the only one who could control my mindset and make sure that it is strong, positive and determined and also have a real involvement in society to create awareness and to spread positive messages to hopefully encourage more people to not be limited by things that happen to them and to simply live their lives.

What is a message you would give to other young people who may believe that their disability will stop them from achieving their dreams?
The main thing I would emphasise is if someone is going through a challenge, be it a physical disability or something else, it is all about keeping the right mindset. If you have a mindset that makes you determined, this is going to take you anywhere you want. But if you are limiting yourself, then you are going nowhere. Work on a mindset that will enable you and support you to be the kind of person who is unbreakable and determined to reach their goals and dreams and then you can simply live life and enjoy it.
Who is a role model or a person that inspired you and why?
If I had to choose someone that I know, it would be my moth. She has been a great example for me in terms of resilience, love, patience and everything she has done for the family. She sacrificed a lot to make sure that we’re all OK and she took care of us and provided great support whenever we needed her. She’s incredible.
If I had to choose someone I’ve never met but who I look up to in terms of their journey, I would say Paralympian Amy Purdy. She is an amazing woman and she has had an incredible journey. She is a double-below-knee amputee and she’s been through a lot of challenges, but regardless, she made it and I always look up to her and I’m inspired by what she went through and how she reacted. She’s an incredible woman and a great role model to me.
You are multi-talented in many domains – tell us about your journey and passions?
I think it’s great to experience different things in life. When I was in college, I started to realise that there are multiple things we can all do – exploring different kinds of sports, activities, passions – and we are not limited to one or two things. The more I experienced new things, the more I realised I wanted to try more! And I want to see what more there is to do. That’s how I started learning different sports and developing my passion for things like travelling, meeting people from different countries, exploring the possibilities of social media, interacting with people and having an engagement and foundation with people around the world. It all started when I realised that I need to invest in my life, learn and explore, break my fears and give it all I have. I try to approach life with this perspective.
Tell us about your love of scuba diving, what is it that attracted you to this sport?
There are two main reasons. The first is that in the water you are completely limitless so it doesn’t matter if you have an amputation or any kind of physical challenge, you are truly free and you can do everything! The second reason would be curiosity. I’m always curious to see what’s there in the oceans – the plants, the creatures, the fish and many more amazing things. It makes me speechless. Learning to scuba dive was one of the greatest decisions I’ve made because when I go diving I come back with so much positive energy and joy.
Where is your favourite place to dive?
I haven’t explored diving in many locations yet, so far it has been mainly in the UAE – but let’s see what happens in the future because I’ve heard a lot about many islands and places across the world where diving is really next level. But actually diving in Fujairah was really amazing.

What would you like to achieve that you haven’t done yet?
This question has so many answers! There is so much I want to achieve and there is so much to explore in this world. For now, I would say travelling and exploring more regions and cultures and meeting many more people across the world. Hopefully, once the world gets back to normal, I will get the chance to do that.
In this issue we are talking about Emirati Women’s Day, while you’re not Emirati yourself, you have spent many years here, what are your thoughts on the achievements of women in the UAE?
I have so much love and respect for the UAE, for the journey of the country, for everything that they have been working so hard for and how they are really building a great base for all the women across the country to reach their goals and dreams. Women here are really supported and witnessing that makes me feel so happy and proud, even if I’m not Emirati. I really love this country and I consider the UAE as my second home. I have been living here for so long and every achievement for the UAE feels like it’s also for me. And of course, the achievements done by women are something I am so proud of and there’s so much more to come.

What is the motto you live by?
It actually a quote by Mahatma Gandhi that says “be the change that you want to see in this world.” I love this quote because it’s so realistic and it’s something that I believe we should all follow and think about whenever we want to make a positive change. So before asking others to change something, we should start by focusing on ourselves and that it will reflect on others.
What is a message that you would tell your younger self?
I would thank myself. It’s true it has been a very tough journey. I was very stubborn at some points in my life and I was very tough, fighting for everything I wanted to achieve and it was hard at times. So I would tell my younger self: thank you, I know it was tough but it was very much needed to be where I am today.
Where is the first place you will travel to when normal travel resumes?
I can’t wait to travel again! Travel is starting to resume but I don’t think it will be the same for a while. When it gets back to normality, however, the first place I will travel to is Italy. I have been there before but I have missed it so much. I love the culture, the nature, the food. The last time I was there as a solo traveller and I spent around two weeks exploring Florence, Tuscany and Milan. I love it and I’m so excited to go there again soon.
Sumathi Ramanathan, Vice President – Market Strategy & Sales at Expo 2020 Dubai discusses how global markets are ready for this exciting event, despite the COVID-19 pandemic
Being in a role that is responsible for driving visitation from key global markets to Expo 2020 Sumathi Ramanathan, Vice President – Market Strategy & Sales, Expo 2020 Dubai has a big challenge on her hands, especially now that the COVID-19 pandemic is continuing to affect travel worldwide. But that doesn’t stop her motivation and drive to make Expo 2020 Dubai the most incredible event the region has seen. Her background in strategic market and business development is allowing her to drive visitors from key markets around the globe, despite the pandemic and to create an exciting buzz around the event. Here we find out more about the strategy to gain traction from all markets around the world and what we can look forward to from “The World’s Greatest Show”.
This past year has been an unusual one – how has the pandemic affected your strategy at Expo 2020 and what are some of the changes you have made to adapt to our new way of life?
While the pandemic has brought about unprecedented challenges, it has also shown us just what can be accomplished when we look beyond our borders and join forces to achieve a common goal – and this is precisely why Expo 2020, as a platform for international collaboration, is needed now more than ever. Expo 2020 is committed to hosting a once-in-a-lifetime experience – a six-month global celebration of creativity, innovation, humanity and world cultures that will bring the world together and inspire action. While we must continue to tackle the impact of COVID-19, we are also facing a wealth of other issues, including climate change and equal access to basic human rights. Seeking inspiring solutions to these challenges remains the focal purpose of Expo 2020 Dubai. The safety and well-being of our visitors, participants and staff remain our top priority, and Expo has implemented a wide range of protective measures, in line with the latest guidance from global health, medical and scientific experts. In early 2021, more than 100,000 members of the public enjoyed a special preview of Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion and experienced the steps that have been taken to protect visitors and ensure social distancing across the Expo site. These included the mandatory pre-booking of tickets to control capacity and visitor flow; floor markings and signage to encourage social distancing; and designated staff responsible for monitoring and regulating social distancing in all venues. In recognition of this compliance with the relevant safety standards and protocols, the preview received the Dubai Assured stamp from the Government of Dubai.

Su Ramanathan
What are some of the challenges you are now facing in relation to the pandemic?
We must be prepared for the changes in travel advisories worldwide. To that end, at the beginning of 2021, Expo 2020 also launched an extensive COVID-19 vaccination drive for all Expo 2020 employees and their households. The offer of free vaccinations has also been extended to all Expo’s official participants and their staff by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai. The announcement was praised by the Expo 2020 Steering Committee.
How are you driving visitors from key global markets and what are some of the markets you have the biggest focus on?
We have joined forces with Authorised Ticket Resellers (ATRs) across more than 100 countries, covering all key markets with whom we work closely and can activate quickly. We will continue to monitor the situation in the months leading up to and during Expo 2020, keeping in mind that it is a six-month event so we can focus on different markets as they open up. We are focusing on the key global markets for the UAE, and we are also working with different sectors, such as government, corporate and academia, to drive domestic visitation. With more than 2,500 online travel agents, tour operators, hotel groups and airlines signed up as ATRs around the globe, we are focusing on target markets based on how prospective visitors in those countries book tickets at varying stages of their journey-planning process, activating different markets as they open up.
What is something you are most excited about at Expo 2020?
For the first time in World Expo history, each country will have its own pavilion, reflecting the inclusive spirit of the UAE. Not only can visitors explore the world without borders, but there will be an incredible array of entertainment with something for everyone, from up to 60 daily shows, one-of-a-kind food experiences and awe-inspiring architecture. It will be incredibly exciting, particularly following the challenges of the past year, to discover the greatest ideas, innovations, culture and entertainment that the world has to offer.

Overview of Expo 2020
Tell us a little about you – what inspired you to take on this role, what is your biggest achievement so far and what would you like to achieve?
I am an avid reader and traveller – and the more I learn and understand different cultures and beliefs and actually meet and engage with others, the more I realise that the commonalities between us are greater than our differences. And what better platform for exchange, dialogue and understanding than the next World Expo, where for six months, the world comes together to celebrate ideas, innovations, thinkers and game-changers. At Expo 2020, success is a collective – we have succeeded in bringing together more than 190 countries at the time when the world is still grappling with a global pandemic of unprecedented scale; and it is amazing to be part of the team who are contributing to a lasting legacy for the city, country and region.
You have worked in many destinations around the world – what is it about Dubai that caught your attention?
The combination of the cosmopolitan diversity fused with the warm and hospitable Emirati culture. The city’s “nothing is impossible” spirit is both inspiring and motivating – it encourages creativity, innovation, out-of-the-box thinking and, more importantly, sets a path for growth and opportunity for people across diverse cultures and origins. It’s emblematic of what a city of the future should be – open, tolerant, innovative, entrepreneurial and enterprising.
How do you think Expo 2020 will elevate the city as a tourist destination?
Demonstrating Dubai’s confidence and openness to all visitors, the first World Expo to be held in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia (MEASA) region will be a spectacular event that will draw people back to the UAE again and again. Expo 2020 will further catalyse the city’s thriving leisure and business tourism industries by providing unprecedented access to a global audience and unique networking opportunities, ultimately driving prosperity in the UAE, our region and beyond.

Who is a woman that inspires you?
The late American lawyer and jurist Ruth Bader Ginsburg; who was unapologetically intelligent and purposeful at a time when such qualities were hardly fashionable among women. She had to persevere against many odds but left a legacy of systemic change and progress because of her focus on achieving key priorities. Perhaps most importantly, she held very strong views and passionately advocated for them. She prized professionalism and collegiality and was known as a bridge-builder, seeking consensus while never taking her eyes off the ultimate goal.
What is the professional motto you live by?
“Whatever the mind of man [or woman] can conceive and believe, it can achieve,” by author Napolean Hill.
What is a message you would send to our readers on why they should visit Expo 2020 this year?
After the challenges of the pandemic, Expo 2020 will be an opportunity to experience the world in one place – an unmissable celebrationof human ingenuity, unrivalled cultural experiences, the world’s best entertainment and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. We want everyone to join the making of a new world, and discover life-changing innovations that will have a meaningful, positive impact on our planet and its people.
Maison Alaïa has presented its first collection since the sad death of iconic designer Azzedine Alaïa.
Designed by new Creative Director Belgian designer Pieter Mulier, the star-studded show took place on rue de Moussy, where the Alaïa headquarters is located, as a tribute to Mr. Alaïa and his team.
Mulier is the first Creative Director to join the house after the death of its Tunisian founder four years ago. With an impressive resume, Mulier was the right-hand man of Raf Simons at Calvin Klein for almost twenty years and has also worked at Jil Sander and Christian Dior.

The show was attended by editors and VIPs including that included Raf Simons, Co-Creative Director at Prada Valentino’s Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccioli who are both good friends of Mulier.
While this collection represents a new era for the house it also reflects the history and DNA of the brand.
The show notes were dedicated to the late Azzedine. “This collection is intended as a tribute to thank you. To express my sincere respect and recognition for the work you did.” It read. “ I tried to be faithful to your creative approach. I even tried to get into your mind, but that’s impossible. Thank you for your peerless adulation of the feminine figure. You were a sculptor, a genius of the hand.”

Pieter Mulier
The tribute was a touching one that was reflected in the clothing, clearing mirroring some of the classic Azzedine signatures while offering a new sexy modern look for today’s woman.
The collection begins a new chapter for the brand but allow us all to remember the legacy of a legend whose vision will never be forgotten.
Founded in 2013 by Her Highness Sheikha Mariam bint Khalifa bin Saif Al Nahyan, MKS Jewellery is a brand that perfectly translates the spirit and heritage of the Emirates into contemporary and unique jewellery pieces.
Referencing H.H. Sheikha Mariam’s initials, the brand stands for women, power, diversity and self-expression while celebrating the sentimental collector that finds value and underlying meaning in everything. Each piece tells its own story and that is something Her Highness finds crucial in the development of her designs. She designs pieces that are meant to last forever and will resonate with not just their owners, but for many owners to come as they are passed down from generation to generation. Growing up in the UAE, Her Highness Sheikha Mariam bint Khalifa bin Saif Al Nahyan was deeply inspired by her rich heritage and wanted to find her own way to express this and share it with others. Through her passion for jewellery design, she has found her way and she continues to find new ways to share her message with the pieces she creates. Here we find out more about her vision, her design process and aspirations for the future of her brand.

What can you tell us about the latest collections for MKS?
Our newest collection is called Unity Solitaire. The idea behind it is how being different reveals true beauty. An unexpected combination can instantly become the perfect match that no one would ever have expected. The Unity collection celebrates this by turning the tables on the idea of what is meant to be. A mix and match of Solitaire diamonds are cut with our signature rope detail to encase each stone.
What is your vision for the brand moving forward?
To create a globally recognised brand that is known for its unique approach to creativity and is accessible in stores all around the world.
Tell us a little about the design process behind your pieces?
I draw inspiration from the stories my grandmother told me about pearls. Rather than having a rigid process where I sit down at a set time, I let my mind run free and pick up a pencil whenever the mood strikes me. The result is an organically growing brand that speaks for itself.

What first inspired you to enter the world of jewellery design?
I’ve always loved to shop for the perfect gifts, however, finding them was more difficult than I could’ve ever imagined. I decided that I wanted to create jewellery pieces that had true meaning, so I set out to bring that to life.
What was the first piece of jewellery you owned?
I was fortunate to be gifted so many pieces as a young child. While I can’t remember the very first one, the idea of owning things that have meaning and became a part of my life has really stuck with me.
August 28th marks Emirati Women’s Day – what does this day mean to you and why do you think it’s important to recognise the successes and achievements of Emirati women?
Women are key contributors to our society, our culture, and our entire way of life. By celebrating their achievements and contributions we can all grow closer together in our own unique ways.

This year’s theme “Women: Ambitions & Inspiration for Next 50 Years,” reflects the UAE 50th anniversary – what is a message you would send to the UAE as it reaches this milestone?
Be proud of who you are and where you have come from. This is our culture and heritage that should never be forgotten, and it’s something that we should all take pride in, every step of the way.
What do you believe is the responsibility of women such as yourself in key positions in the UAE to be an inspiration to others?
Every woman has a unique, creative spark deep within her, however, if no one is there to ignite it in the first place then it will never shine bright. I see my job as inspiring the next generation so that we can continue to grow and flourish in ways that no one expected.
What is a message you would give to women in the UAE who want to achieve their dreams?
Stay true to who you are and celebrate the unique things in life that define you. Only then can you create something that you are proud to call your own and the whole world will sit up and take notice.

Tell us about you as a person: what is your biggest achievement and how did you become the woman you are today?
Walking across the desert from Abu Dhabi to Al Ain allowed me to grow as a woman and building a brand from nothing has hopefully started to create the legacy that I will leave behind. These two journeys may be very different in their tone, but they have each had the same type of transformative effect on the way I see myself.
What is your favourite memory of the UAE growing up?
So many great memories, a lot of the places we use to go as kids no longer exist anymore. While I find this sad, I also see it as a chance to grow and explore new places in the world.
What is something you would still like to achieve?
I would relish the opportunity to travel the world and discover a whole host of new cultures and ways of life. Only then can I say that I am a true citizen of the world with an open mind about the way other people live their lives.
This past year has been an unusual one — how was 2020 for you and what is a lesson you will take away from this year?
Your physical health is important and so is your mental health. To be around family and friends is a blessing. To never take things for granted. Constantly have something to look forward to and never let the status quo stand in your way if you want to do things differently.
As a female entrepreneur what is the biggest challenge you face in what you do and how do you overcome these challenges?
Finding the right team, taking the risk, and constantly creating in your own signature way of doing things are the big challenges every entrepreneur faces. It’s not so much about being a woman, it’s about being someone who is brave in the face of adversity and always ready to take on a challenge.
Who is a woman that inspires you?
Everyone has a story and something to learn from. Rather than focusing on one woman I try and learn something from every woman. That way I can benefit from a broader range of experiences with every passing day.
What is the professional motto you live by?
Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is to try just one more time. These words by Thomas Edison have shaped up who I am today and given me strength when I have needed it most.
What is a message you would like to share with our readers about your brand?
I believe that every piece of jewellery you own should have a meaning and tell a story. This is why I would welcome you to explore our platforms to discover the pieces we create as they all help to tell your own story. I guarantee that you will find something you never expected.
Butheina Kazim’s passion for film is something she has always carried with her, but in 2014 she took that passion to the next level with the introduction of Cinema Akil, an innovative film platform that brings Arthouse cinema to the UAE, but also brings together communities and invites visitors to open a conversation around film and the messages it portrays.
After a number of years organising pop-up cinemas around the country, Kazim opened her first permanent cinema space at Al Serkal Avenue and it was met with great success. The cinema space which is inspired by old movie theatres, is not only a place for showcasing classic and new independent movies, but also an area for a community of creatives to come together have discussions about the concept of film itself and the messages that play out on the screen. Here, we discover more about the concept, why it’s such an important platform to have in Dubai, and the vision for future development.
Tell us about the vision and objective of Cinema Akil and why you decided to venture on this journey?
The journey started in the summer of 2014 when we showed a small series of films that we felt were necessary to show to Dubai. It was at a time when the Dubai International Film (DIFF) Festival was at its peak, we had a lot of local talents coming through, a lot of regional films being funded by the Abu Dhabi Film Festival (ADFF), regional films making it to international festivals etc. but there was very little space for people to be able to watch them. There was DIFF and ADFF but these only took place for limited periods. So quite pragmatically we wanted to create a platform where people could access this regional cinema experience in the city as opposed to watching Arab films more easily in other cities around the world.
The more philosophical dream was to present the type of cinema that represented, spoke to and built on the consciousness of the Dubai community. So offering films that not only reflect or connect to people’s experiences or speak in their language, whether it’s cinematic language or in an actual linguistic sense. There were very few opportunities to present the world of cinema outside of the commercial cinema that you have at the multiplexes. There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s great, and the UAE has the highest number of screens in the Middle East per capita, but there wasn’t a single cinema that offered this kind of programming which is much more comprehensive and is more reflective of how we are as a diverse, multicultural community. I felt like this needed to be urgently addressed as the city was starting to form its identity and the development of the arts and cultural scene here. Film had a very important role to play in that and that was the thinking behind the idea.
So then we had to ask ourselves how we deliver on that? We started with a programme of films shown inside a gallery called Third Line Gallery. There were a lot of new places that were open to experimentation at the time and they also shared our vision of presenting films that not only reflect life experiences, but also challenge our notions of how we go about our daily lives, how we push boundaries and how we approach some of the changes that are rapidly confronting us in this fast-paced, very complex, diverse environment. So we started with all of these ideas and tried to test them in a number of different formats. We started with a programme that showed a selection of films from Alfred Hitchcock films to Pablo Larraín’s “No”, to many more from around the world that addressed global issues and highlight life experiences that people can really connect to. We also showed films by artists that are usually only shown in exhibition spaces. We were trying a little bit of everything to see how people responded and what kinds of conversations we could start and how we could bring people together in an informal sharing space for a conversation around the language of film.

Since the beginning how has your objective developed and where are you at with it now?
Now we’re at the fourth phase of our journey. We started up with pop-up programming where we would tie-up with different events or partners and that was the only physical manifestation of Cinema Akil at that time. Then we had the “Now Playing” project that we did in partnership with Al Serkal Avenue which was a temporary cinema to test whether people would come out and watch these films. It was super experimental, and it was a success that saw start-ups and creatives coming together to give life to this project for a short, concentrated period. Then the third phase was opening a permanent space which we did in 2018. So far, we have had 25 different festivals since we opened, everything from film weeks to presenting series, conversations around different genres of film, as well as experimental things like our cat weekend – which showed only films about cats! Then when the pandemic came, which wasn’t very friendly to cinema environments, so it was quite hard for three months, but we were lucky. We are a member of the Network of Arthouse Cinemas in the region and several other international groups, and many spaces were hit a lot harder than we were. We were able to find ways to make it work and we got creative. We really saw people’s insistence on the survival of the space and the decision of people to come to the cinema despite all the challenges. When we reopened, we didn’t know what to expect, but sure enough, people came!
Following that, we are now in a phase where we are doing a lot of different things around the idea of cinema. We didn’t just want to be a space that shows films, we wanted to build a community around it, and we have a lot of partnerships with other organisations and events, bespoke experiences and even cinema design to cater for specific events. That’s quite exciting and we are trying a lot of different things that the slowdown of the pandemic allowed us to rethink and try. And it’s also exciting to see what will happen to the film industry in general after the pandemic.
What is in the pipeline for Cinema Akil and what would you still like to achieve with the platform?
This summer we have an extended series with our biggest programme yet. We are starting a time travel series that will run through to September. Starting with the sixties, and progressing through the seventies, eighties and nineties. It’s a selection of iconic films and defining films of each era and it’s important for us to showcase a broader spectrum of films than what we think of as classic or iconic cinema. We are opening people’s minds to a much more diverse world of film, and we are even showing films that have never been on a big screen before. It is a mix of discovering new films and seeing the great classics that you will always love to see in the cinema.
After summer, we will restart our outdoor season which first started after the lockdown. We have an outdoor cinema space in Al Serkal Avenue which has a full programme throughout the season. Then we have the Gulf Film Festival returning later in the year and we are working on a lot more concepts for later in the year. We are also launching a merchandise line in the summer, so a lot is happening!

And what would you still like to do that you haven’t done yet?
I think what I’m still yearning for is to find different ways of activating the space as a place for experimentation, for artists to take over, and potentially a residency programme for people to engage with a cinema environment in a different way. I want to see how we can further double down on our message and our objective to create a space for debate and political engagement and to present pressing issues that we all must contend with. There is the escapism side of cinema but there’s also the part that ignites parts of you and challenges you to think differently or to think in a more engaged way about everything, from our very strong feminist programming to looking at issues like climate change or sustainability and asking how we can use films and documentaries in the UAE to highlight these issues and allow people to really engage with them. We previously had a series called “Debateables” which focused on hot topics and highly controversial issues that are part of life. We would follow the screening with a discussion that invited the audience to participate in and I would like to bring that back.
Why did you choose Al Serkal Avenue to be the location for Cinema Akil?
There was nowhere else that made sense. This was the perfect place with the right environment. You have the informality of an industrial space which represents being in an imperfect, constantly changing environment and being in close proximity to neighbours that are also going through that process in their own disciplines. We have neighbours that are theatres, photography studios, exhibition spaces, galleries etc. It’s a hub beyond that phrase of it being a cultural district, there is a communal attribute that’s very hard to replicate and I don’t think there is anywhere else in Dubai that has achieved that yet. That is in big part thanks to the founders of Al Serkal Avenue who have a very strong belief in the spirit of independent initiatives, and they have supported the community and allowed it to grow. So for me, it was an easy decision when choosing the location and it’s always going to be our flagship home.

Would you look at expanding further across the region?
I’m very excited about the prospects for independent cinema in the region, specifically in the Gulf. Saudi Arabia is an incredible place, not only in terms of the actual market size but in terms of the curiosity and talent that is there, but I think everything in due time. Everything we do has to respond to the environment it is in, otherwise we are just a space, and a big part of engaged community building is listening to what people want and even what they don’t know they want yet. In a different market or context, we would listen very closely to the community as we do in Dubai and double down on partnerships and collaborations, because that’s how we started and that’s how we will always work, wherever we go next.
Who is a person that inspires you and what’s a message you would give to them?
I don’t have a single person because I’m quite resistant to the idea of holding anyone to that level of perfection. I do however find myself constantly looking to women creators – artists, filmmakers, designers, writers, poets – over the age of 75. I like to have a reference point to see how they go about their lives, how they carry themselves, how they respond to their younger selves and their unique balance of confidence, softness and emotional intelligence that I think is very attractive and strong for me.
Why do you think Emirati Women’s Day is important and how do you think women in the UAE have progressed and adapted?
Emirati women have been doing great things for a long time and are now doing great things in fields that are perhaps more relatable. And I think it’s interesting at least as an opportunity to create curiosity in an environment that has so much energy and potential and so many different stories every day, to take a step back and look at the women who have been doing this for a while – what are they doing? What have they been working on? What are they curious about? And I think in that sense it’s an approach that could be helpful when you’re dealing with a lot of different voices, and I think Emirati women are a segment of that so it’s important to recognise them. In terms of progression, I don’t think there was a specific turning point, progress is a cumulative process and I think we are still in a chapter of that.

What’s your favourite film and why and what film should we go out and watch today?
This is the worst question to ask me! I have a hard time being very selective about the things that inform me. I believe you can fall in love with every film for a different reason, the same way you fall in love with people. I think what is exciting and interesting to watch are genre films that come out of the global expectations, I find that exciting and challenging, especially films made by women. There is a new film called “Atlantic” by a Senegalese-French film-maker Mati Diop, that’s really incredible and it deals with some really interesting issues, it’s very complex and layered and it’s a very good example of what happens when you give people the reigns to tell their own story.
What’s the professional motto that you live by?
There have been quite a few but I think one thing that keeps coming back to me is “empowered women empower women.” That’s something that I hope to continue living by and build on, both institutionally and personally. I want to have a professional environment that is responsive to the space beyond empowering women. It translates to my everyday life where I try to work with women as much as I can in every aspect of what we do. A lot of the concepts within Al Serkal Avenue are women-led and that helps to create a lot of uniqueness in the environment here.

The UAE celebrates 50 years this year, what is a message you would send to the UAE after 50 years?
Congratulations! It’s an incredible place to be, it’s an aspirational place. I grew up here, I saw it go through a lot of different phases and I think what is exciting now is seeing the way the younger generation is thinking about the country and challenging ideas of how progress is made and how cities are built. I think Dubai has always been a great place for experimentation, Abu Dhabi has been a great place for stability and creating a good infrastructure that allows for a celebration of people and to also have the ability to attract a serious conversation on what types of progress can be obtained in the region and I think that’s not an arrival point. It’s beautiful to have
this milestone to look back and acknowledge how far we’ve come and to have a reference point for where we’re going, but I think that it’s no longer a young country. I’m rooting for this country and I hope the next 50 shows us even more progress. I think this year has been quite remarkable in terms of new policies with historically significate initiatives being introduced. Once you allow a country to go beyond the idea of just being multi-cultural and really harness we see what kind of outcomes are born out of that diversity and that’s when we can the vision forward.
Her Highness Sheikha Salama Bint Hazza AlNahyan has become an acclaimed author since her literary journey began in 2015. As the granddaughter of the late HH Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan, she has always been inspired by her heritage and culture and wanted to find a way to channel this through her passion for writing. It was her mission to write novels that pay tribute to the Emirati culture and heritage as she noticed there weren’t enough stories and representation of the UAE in the literary world. She wanted to share some of the stories of the UAE and shed light on the culture of the country in a modern way.
After writing her first novel The Invisible Orphans in 2015, HH Sheikha Salama Bint Hazza Al Nahyan’s next four books came with ease, and by 2019, the 21-year-old writer had published five books. Her latest The Horse, The Saluki, & The Falcon is a collection of quotes that pay homage to the UAE, taking celebrated animals from the Emirati culture and turning them into icons of wisdom that impart lessons of empathy, love, and kindness. The book will embark on a promotional campaign which will be launched as part of the upcoming Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) in November. Under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammad AlQasimi, member of the Supreme Council of the UAE and Ruler of Sharjah, and under the flagship of Sharjah Book Authority, the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) is an annual international event that exhibits and promotes the work of acclaimed Arabic and International authors. With her participation in this year’s event, HH Sheikha Salama Bint Hazza Al Nahyan hopes to further support Its goal in promoting reading as a habit among the younger generation while instilling the love of literature among the people of the region. Here we find out more about her journey as an author and her vision of spreading the message of Emirati culture to the world.

Why did you decide to participate in this year’s Sharjah International Book Fair?
My goal with my work and literature is to raise awareness around our cultural heritage through a series of children’s books and to have people around the world know more about our history and culture. That is why I have displayed my work in numerous reputable book fairs and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to display my books at the Sharjah International Book Fair as it is one of the most prominent book fairs in the region.
Why do you think such platforms are important in the UAE and how do you think they are helpful in sharing and supporting local talent?
The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair and the Sharjah International Book Fair hold a prominent place in the literary industry and are notable book fairs in around the world. Taking part and participating in these events are a great way to introduce and support local talent as they host renowned authors and publishers in addition to being a great way for authors to get their work out there and noticed by industry professionals.

Tell us about your book; “The Horse, The Saluki & The Falcon” – what inspired it and what is the message you are sharing with it?
“The Horse, The Saluki & The Falcon” is a book of quotes about life and humanity. The main inspiration behind the book was The Boy, The Mole, The Fox by Charlie Mackesy. Charlie’s work inspired me to create my own book of quotes using the UAE’s most treasured animals.
The animals featured in the book were chosen based on their characteristics and the way they resemble humans. The horse represents beauty and power, while the Saluki on the other hand, symbolizes intelligence, speed and loyalty, and the Falcon signifies alertness and attentiveness. Each quote depends on the animal’s personality if they could speak to humans, and what message it could give out.
In many ways, these animals helped our ancestors survive many environmental challenges. The horse, for instance, helped with hunting and transportation, while the falcon and the saluki made access to food easier. Falcon hunting and saluki racing are still used today as a tradition passed down from our ancestors. It reminds us that surviving such a harsh environment was only possible because of these species.

How does your heritage inspire you in what you do today?
I am deeply passionate about my Emirati culture and it was very important to me to incorporate our heritage when writing my books and more specifically this book. I noticed that there aren’t many children’s books that are embedded with our culture and heritage, which was why I was adamant about creating a story that was not only educational but also traditional and celebrates our country.
What first made you want to become an author?
Writing came to me as a coincidence, but I think what led to me becoming an author is that since I was a child, I’ve always loved reading, and I’ve always loved the stories shared by my parents and the older generation who share stories and myths of their past. I know that some writers who started at a young age and others who began later in life and I’m sure everyone is different, but I believe that sometimes your passion might come knocking at your door and other times you open that door before it nudges you and tells you I’m here.

What is a message or piece of advice that you would give to young aspiring authors in the Emirates?
Never give up. To start your literary journey, you need to have consistency and drive so that you can become a successful writer. As an author, I found that continuous editing and revising your work is crucial when it comes to writing a book. The more you read it the more mistakes you notice and you become inspired with new material that can elevate your book even more.
What is the message about Emirati culture that you want to share with the world through your work?
Tolerance, coexistence and generosity. We are all humans and we should strive to do better and be better for ourselves and for others.
What is it about writing children’s books that motivates you?
Writing children’s books wasn’t something I planned, I just let the process of unfolding a story take its course and saw where it went. I usually have a few ideas and then I choose what resonates with me the most and from there, I start writing my piece.
In August we celebrate Emirati Women’s Day. What does this day mean to you?
It’s a day that I hold dearly in my heart. I believe that women need to be honoured and recognised for all the work and successes they have achieved, and that is for all women; mothers, the female workforce, daughters, sisters, aunts, grandmothers, granddaughters, everyone.

How would you assess the journey of Emirati women so far in terms of their achievements?
Women in the UAE have come a long way in the past fifty years. They are natural multi-taskers and no challenge is too difficult to face. Especially when juggling work, social life and personal life. Time and time again we have proven nothing is impossible when you put your mind to it.
What is your biggest achievement so far?
I would say, setting my priorities straight. Whether it’s my work, my passions or my personal life, and achieving something in each of them, one step at a time.

What is something you would still like to achieve that you haven’t done yet?
Editing and polishing my upcoming short story which is targeted at an older age group. That’s my next goal and my passion.
What is your personal motto?
I have three mottos I repeat to myself constantly:
– Never give up.
– Do as best you can.
– Improve, evolve and learn. It’s an infinite process, we are always learning.
Who is a woman that inspires you?
A lot of women inspire me, it’s difficult to choose just one. But as a writer, I would say the Brönte sisters, especially Emily. She is someone who truly spoke to me. She was writing at a time when women didn’t get their books published, so she used a male pen name and an unconventional poetic style. She thought outside the box and that inspires me.

Later this year the UAE will celebrate its 50th anniversary – what is a message that you would send to your country on this occasion?
I’m proud of how far we have come in just fifty years as a country. Our history is something to be proud of and our present is something to be proud of as well, and so is our future.
As the world still faces many restrictions due to COVID-19, we discover where you can safely travel this summer from the UAE.
The UAE has begun to establish travel corridors with some destinations around the globe offering full vaccinated travellers the opportunity to travel without quarantine requirements on arrival. So far travel corridors have been announced between the UAE and a number of countries with more announcements to come. And there are many more places that are open for travel from Dubai, while Abu Dhabi residents still face some further restrictions. Here we discover some of the places you CAN safely travel to this summer.
The Maldives

The Maldives is opened to all travellers who provide a negative PCR test on arrival. While the country’s capital Malé is currently on lockdown, all idyllic island resorts are open and completely COVID-19-free thanks to strict guidelines set in place by the government. The Maldives is a perfect resort for families, couples and groups of friends looking to relax, unwind and soak up the sunshine.
Seychelles

On 18th May the UAE and Seychelles announced the introduction of a travel corridor between the two countries. The move which came in a bid to promote tourism between the two countries applies to vaccinated travellers, however, non-vaccinated residents can also travel with the proof of a negative PCR test. Those who are vaccinated with need to provide recognised vaccination certificate approved by the health authorities in the two nations, alongside a negative PCR test, taken 72 hours prior to arrival.
Greece

A safe travel corridor between the UAE and Greece was put in place for fully vaccinated travellers between the countries. Under the agreement, passengers holding vaccination certificates issued by health authorities can travel to Greece from today without having to quarantine on arrival. Travellers still need to abide by Covid-19 precautionary measures in place in both destinations. All travellers flying to Greece must fill in a Passenger Locator Form at least 24 hours before entering the country. As well as flights to Athens, airlines have begun to add direct flights to Greek islands Mykonos and Santorini to their schedules, with both Fly Dubai and Wizz Air now flying to the island destinations.
Cyprus

From May 10th Cyprus is open to both vaccinated and non-vaccinated travellers without the need for quarantine. Those who do not have proof of both vaccinations will be required to provide a negative PCR test on arrival. For vaccinations, there is no timeframe on the date that the vaccine needs to be administered. Emirates airline flies direct to Cyprus three times a week and it takes just four hours.
Spain

As of 7th June, Spain has been welcoming travellers from all countries who have been fully inoculated with an approved Covid-19 vaccine. Travellers have to be fully vaccinated at least 14 days before they are due to land in the country. Vaccines must be one of those authorised by the European Medicines Agency or included in the World Health Organisation’s emergency use listing. Printed certificates issued in Spanish or English will be accepted as proof of vaccinations.
Georgia

Located just three and a half hours from Dubai, Georgia has become one of the most popular holiday destinations for UAE residents. As the country begins to open up again, visitors from the UAE as well as a number of other countries must have a COVID-19 PCR test result taken no later than 72 hours prior to arrival or hold a COVID-19 vaccination certificate (completion of two doses). Passengers entering Georgia with a COVID-19 PCR test result will be required to undergo a further COVID-19 PCR test on the 3rd day after arrival at their own expense. Additionally, they must complete the online registration form and present the confirmation email at check-in.
Lebanon

The UAE’s thousands of Lebanese expats will be thrilled to know that they can visit family back home this summer. If you are travelling to Lebanon, you must take a COVID‑19 PCR test and complete the “Registration form for traveller quarantine follow up” online, as well as download and activate the “covidlebtrack” tracking application before departure. All passengers who have received the second dose of a COVID‑19 vaccine a minimum of 15 days before their departure are exempt from performing a COVID‑19 PCR test in the country they are travelling from but must perform a COVID‑19 PCR test upon arrival in Lebanon. A further PCR test is required when leaving and again when arriving in Dubai.
Egypt

From its iconic pyramids to its luscious beaches Egypt offers a number of spectacular attractions for tourists. The country is open to visitors but all passengers, including Egyptian nationals, will need to carry a printed negative COVID‑19 PCR test certificate from an accredited lab in English or Arabic for a test taken within 72 hours before the departure of their final direct flight to Egypt. All passengers must also complete a health declaration form which they can obtain from their airline during the flight.
Tanzania

From its stunning mountain scenes, to its safari landscapes to the picturesque beaches of Zanzibar, Tanzania is a favourite destination for UAE residents. Tanzania is open to all visitors from the UAE and requires them to provide a printed copy of a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR test result certificate from a test taken no more than 72 hours prior to arrival, as well as completing a Traveler’s Surveillance form within 24 hours of arrival and present it to the Port Health Authorities. Passengers may be subject to medical screening and further COVID-19 Rapid test on arrival at their own cost.
Mauritius

Mauritius has announced that it will be open to vaccinated tourists from 15th July, just in time for the Eid-Al-Adha holiday. The island will be opening in phases during 2021 and the first phase, from 15 July to 30 September 2021, will enable vaccinated travellers to enjoy a resort holiday on the island.
France

France reopened its borders to vaccinated travellers on 9th June. The new rules require visitors to have both vaccinations. Vaccinations that are recognised however, French borders will only be open only to those who took jabs that were approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and including Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Johnson and Johnson. As of now, the Sinopharm vaccine is not approved for travel. For those not vaccinated travellers will have to justify their purpose of travel by stating any one of the compelling reasons established by French authorities. Both types of travellers will have to undergo PCR tests within 72 hours before their arrival in France.
Italy

Italy was one of the worst-hit countries in the first wave of COVID-19 leading to the closure of borders for many months, but it is now ready to welcome tourists once again with the announcement of the opening to visitors from a number of countries including the UAE without an essential reason to travel. Travellers to Italy must be fully vaccinated or recovered from Covid-19, or who have a negative PCR test result taken no more than 48 hours before travel. Currently, travellers cannot fly to Italy if they have been in or transited through Bangladesh, Brazil, India or Sri Lanka in the past 14 days.
Mexico

Mexico is currently one of the most relaxed countries in the world for COVID-19 restrictions, and with its stunning beaches and renowned party atmosphere it would make the perfect summer holiday destination (if you can manage the long flight.) Currently, If you are travelling to Mexico, you will not be required to take a pre‑departure COVID‑19 PCR test but you must complete a traveller information form upon arrival. When returning to Dubai however, a negative PCR test will be required as with all destinations.
Serbia

All Covid-19-related travel restrictions have now been lifted in Serbia. The country is so relaxed that visitors no longer need to show proof of a negative PCR test to enter the country (however one is required to fly from Dubai). Shopping malls, restaurants and some tourist attractions have reopened in the capital of Belgrade and across the country.
Armenia

Known for its stunning landscapes and beautiful women (the Kardashian sisters are part Armenian) this picturesque country is a hidden gem on the border of Asia and Europe. Armenia is now welcoming international travellers who can present a negative Covid-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of departure. Those that can’t, must undertake a test on arrival at their own expense, and self isolate until the result is returned (typically up to 48 hours).
All guidelines were correct at the time of going to press but are subject to change without notice.

What’s on the Menu?

Ikigai Rolls
Ikigai’s dishes are inspired by traditional Japanese street food which has been given a chic, contemporary twist. Putting presentation at the forefront, many of the dishes look too good to eat, but you will want to taste them all – we promise!

Softshell Crab with Wasabi Dip
To begin, choose from a range of small snacks that include Edamame, Crispy Squid and Chicken Gyoza (just a few of our favourites).
A must-try are the Spicy Tuna Tacos which bring together the traditional Mexican Taco and Japanese flavours – they are simply delicious.

Thinly sliced Tuna with Truffle Ponzu
Next comes sushi, sashimi and a selection of raw dishes. Depending on your taste the Salmon and Avocado Rolls are to die for, while the raw seared tuna is some of the best you’ll find in the city.

Wagyu Ribeye with Ancho Soy Glaze
When it comes to main courses you’ll be spoilt for choice but we have to say the Angus Fillet and Grilled Black Cod are our highly recommended dishes. Cooked to perfection, both of these iconic dishes will melt in your mouth. If you fancy something more traditional the Vegetable Hotpot or Stir Fried Spicy Ramen are divine.

Sweet Potato Semi Freddo with fried Mochi
No matter how much you eat there’s always room for dessert and traditional dishes including Japanese Cheesecake, Sweet Potato Semi Freddo and a selection of Mochi will finish your meal in a completely satisfying way.

The Men’s Spring-Summer 2022 collection by Hermès represents freedom and the escapism we all need.
Relaxed materials, a muted colour palette and sport-inspired styles capture the essence of today’s modern man.

Created as a response to the need for a wider perspective and embracing the great outdoors, the collections pushes the boundaries and blurs the lines of tailoring and sportswear.

It is a reinvention of a wardrobe in which different fabrics are interwoven and where technical innovation is at the core, combined with a legacy of craftsmanship.

The materials for the collection were carefully selected for their uniqueness. Paper becomes fabric, Toilbright and a cotton cover fuse together, leather is enlivened with bursts of colour and stitching graphics. Overshirts, double jacket-cardigans, coats and parkas are all presented in two materials.

Casual lines are combined with a structured sophistication as they move from day to night.

A harmonious play on contrasts accentuates the colour palette. Celadon-green, algae, chocolate, and carbon hues blend with the softness of faded rose, stone-grey and raw-silk.
A bright, soft sweater, a daisy pattern and large Bermuda shorts embody this liberated relaxation.

Suffused with optimism and energy, this creative collection is bursting with the vitality of a world reclaimed.

Breitling has us all ready for summer with the new limited-edition capsule collection of its iconic SuperOcean Heritage ’57 watch. The SuperOcean Heritage ’57 Pastel Paradise Capsule Collection is all about colour with five new shades that will offer a stylish pop to your summer wardrobe. The 38mm stainless steel case features a rotating bezel and bold indices, making it the perfect summer accessory.
“This modern-retro tribute to the original SuperOcean is an exciting addition to the Breitling family of ladies’ watches. Of course, it’ll look great at work, but its fun-in-the-sun vibe might make you want to spend a weekend at the beach,” says Breitling CEO Georges Kern.

SuperOcean Heritage 57 Pastel Paradise Capsule Collection
Inspired by the rising popularity of seaside leisure in the 1950s and 1960s, the watches have a laid-back sunny mood with a colour palette that evokes, joy, relaxation and a lot of fun. The colours include summer white, aquamarine, mint green, and iced latte – all with tone-on-tone dials, bezels, and straps. The hero piece is the rainbow tangerine version. With hour markers and hands coated in Super-LumiNova®, it sings in hues of yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, red, and orange. If you want a custom colour combination, you’ll love the quick-exchange system for swapping out the luxe Saffiano calfskin leather straps, which also come in lemon and raspberry sorbet. At the heart of each watch beats the COSC-certified Breitling Caliber 10 with a power reserve of about 42 hours and all of the watches are water-resistant up to 100 metres.

On why they decided to launch this collection, CEO Georges Kern said; “of course the watch industry is not the fashion industry, our products are much more long-lasting, but I think the watch industry became much more fashionable. The second aspect is that we thought everyone needed some colour and some fun after the COVID-19 situation and our design team loved this pastel collection. I think combining the old design of the SuperOcean Heritage ’57 and modernising it in the way we did creates something extremely special.”

With the launch of this collection Breitling introduces a moodboard challenge game with its partner DREST, the world’s first interactive luxury fashion mobile game. This highly immersive game puts players in the role of fashion stylists choosing clothing and accessories from over 200 leading global fashion brands. Breitling began its partnership with DREST earlier this year. Of the decision to partner with the fashion gaming concept CEO Georges Kern said; “as an industry, you cannot think in silos because our consumers don’t think like that. Someone who’s interested in watches is also interested in cars, or sports, fashion etc. so you have these transversal interconnections anyway. Now the question is ‘how can we as a brand amplify our message. in these different silos’?’ Fashion is a key element and we needed to find the right way of doing it because our products are not fashion products but our industry has become more fashionable. So what we have to look at the future. This is what we love about DREST because it is a platform combining different elements – fashion, gaming – and it also reflects the real woman and society we live in today and this combination that makes it special and that’s why we are so happy to be working with them.” As with all the other fashion items featured in DREST, there is the option for users to seamlessly shop the Breitling pieces they have played and competed within the game – creating a fun and interactive modern-day shopping experience.

The third Breitling–DREST mood board challenge goes live on Monday, June 28, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. GMT, and will run for three days (72 hours). Join the challenge here.
The Superocean Heritage ’57 Pastel Paradise Capsule Collection will be produced for a limited time during this summer season only. Shop the collection for a limited time at Breitling stores in the region and online.
