Meet Katie Brindle, Chinese medicine Practitioner, Author and Founder of the Hayo’u Method

Katie Brindle, Chinese medicine Practitioner, Author and Founder of the Hayo’u Method discusses the benefits of traditional Chinese techniques to our health and wellbeing.

In a world where technology and science so often lead the way, it is easy to forget that traditional methods can often be just as effective if not more than modern FADs and gadgets. This is something Katie Brindle discovered after years of suffering after a serious car accident. When modern medicine didn’t help her pain, Brindle turned to traditional Chinese medicine and was overwhelmed by the results. So much so that she began to study in the field and consequently make it a career.

After practising in the field for almost 20 years Bridle founded the Hayo’u method; a selection of one-minute rituals that can help to combat many modern ailments from poor sin, to fatigue, to bad digestion to anxiety. Using crystals to perform unique rituals the Hayo’u method consists of powerful self-treatment techniques that counter-balance the impact of modern living and bridge the gap between ancient wisdom and modern living. Brindle was recently a key speaker as part of Net-A-Porter’s online event “The Beauty of You” which is encouraging women to open up and discuss beauty and wellness, especially at a time where many of us are feeling anxious and stressed. Brindle’s key message was that these methods will help to relieve all the negative feelings many of us have at the current time. Her range of products which are available at Net-A-Porter are both sustainable and natural, allowing for an all-round positive experience. Here we discuss the effects of Chinese medicine and why it can help us all.

What first interested you to become involved in the practice of Chinese medicine?

I was actually training to be an opera singer when I had a car accident and sustained severe whiplash. My injuries ended those dreams. Western medicine was unable to help me, and I spent years searching for a solution which ended up being a Chinese doctor in a humble TCM clinic in London. Having reached that pinch point, finding the solution after years of agony, I fell in love with Chinese medicine with a passion. I immediately embarked on a course and re-trained. Alongside practising massage and reflexology, I studied Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and qualified as a Five Elements Chinese medical practitioner, graduating from the UK’s Integrated College of Chinese Medicine.

What is something everyone can do every day to help improve our health?

Body Tapping! Tapping with bamboo is an ancient Chinese therapy called Pai Sha that works wonders for your general wellbeing. It’s a simple, pleasurable, yet hugely effective way to support and maintain your health, no matter your age or physical state.

How does it work? Well, according to Chinese medicine an absolute fundamental of health is a good circulation of qi and blood around the body. This flow can be disrupted or stagnate for any number of reasons, a sedentary lifestyle, stress, emotional upset or injuries. In as little as one minute a day, an all-over body tap can clear areas of stagnation, support lymphatic drainage, release tension and encourage a smooth flow of blood and qi around the body. Tapping will instantly energise you in the morning and deeply relax you in the evening. This exercise gives your circulation a serious wake-up call, so it’s a great antidote to feeling tired or sluggish. The technique should take anywhere between 1 and 5 minutes to practice – and daily is great, but whenever you feel like it!

What are some of the most common requests you receive from clients?

Here are my top 3: “How do I do a natural facelift?” “How do I lose weight?” And “how can I effectively treat cellulite?”

For the first one, the answer is without a doubt facial gua sha. It’s often referred to as the ‘Eastern Face Lift’ (see below for more information)

How do I lose weight? The answer is with Qigong! Many people push themselves through super-hard workouts and wonder why they aren’t losing weight when they are working so hard. The truth is that this type of workout raises cortisol levels, and when the body is stressed, it holds on to fat. Qigong, on the other hand, works the muscles and nourishes all of the organs – but, crucially, doesn’t strain them. It boosts your oxygen uptake and circulation, but while your body is relaxed. This builds your capacity to store and generate your reserves of Qi (energy) as well as balancing your body. Achieving your natural optimum weight is a happy side effect.

And for cellulite: My go-to tool for this would be the jade comb. Body combing is an ancient Chinese self-healing treatment, it’s pleasurable, simple and hugely beneficial. Body combing works similarly to body brushing. It boosts lymphatic drainage, making it particularly effective for heavy legs, water retention and the dreaded cellulite. Cellulite occurs when fat deposits push through the connective tissue beneath the skin. In Chinese medicine, cellulite is connected to water metabolism. When our Qi (energy) is stagnant, proper fluid management is impeded, which causes cellulite. We all have energy channels, called meridians, that flow through our body. All of these meridians have either direct or indirect connections with the head and scalp. Combing gently stimulates the meridian channels and clears stagnation – ensuring the free-flow of Qi, blood and fluid around the body. It’s remarkably effective, and indeed our Beauty Restorer Comb is an award-winning anti-cellulite tool!

We recently saw you participating in the Net-A-Porter Beauty Festival – why do you think it’s important for women to talk about beauty and wellness today?

Well, beauty is a bit of a no-brainer, not least because everyone is having such a hard time at the moment, that to indulge in your beauty regime is a way to care for yourself, to feel better and also just to have a little control. Also, we have more time at the moment!

However, wellness is what I’m really excited about because wellness is just another word for preventative health. And that is what I am passionate about as a practitioner of Chinese medicine. In Chinese wisdom, we approach beauty from the inside out. Essentially, you are never going to look your best if you don’t feel well. We see beauty as the exterior manifestation of interior health. This is why body gua sha is going to be the next big thing.

Body gua sha is such an unsung hero. It’s a simple self-massage technique using a round-edged tool, that has been used for thousands of years to treat inflammation, muscular tension, coughs and fever and boost immunity. Body gua sha offers us the fully-fledged integration of health and beauty and absolutely where the beauty industry is going. Try our Hayo’u Body Restorer if you’d like to give it a try, there are lots of tutorials on the website and Instagram.

Tell us a little about how your journey evolved to develop Hay’ou and why do you think it’s relevant for today’s modern woman?

After I found the cure for my health issues came from Chinese medicine, I was inspired. Alongside practising massage and reflexology, I studied Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and qualified as a Five Elements Chinese medical practitioner, graduating from the UK’s Integrated College of Chinese Medicine. There are a few reasons I started my own business: I could see that the Eastern philosophy that I had trained in had an answer to the Western illness epidemic. As a consumer, I believed that companies need to offer responsible, long-term solutions to the products they were selling and offset any environmental damage along the way and as a practitioner, I could see that people wanted to be empowered about their health but didn’t know where to start. And finally, as a mother, I wanted to do my part to safeguard the planet for my children, contributing to a better world, not a lesser one.

During my time as a Chinese medicine practitioner, I quickly realised that the prevention and self-treatment of illness was the secret of longevity in ancient China. When my patients practised the self-care techniques I suggested in between treatments, they would get better so much more quickly. There is a great Chinese proverb – ‘Dig the well before you are thirsty’, the Taoist philosophy is wholly based on the principle that prevention is better than cure – it is far better to stop yourself from getting sick than waiting to get sick and then fixing it. And Yang Sheng, the self-care part of Chinese medicine in which I specialize, is full of simple techniques to help you achieve precisely that.

And so I created Hayo’u. Hayo’u is a gua sha tools and wellness brand, combining the ancient wisdom of Chinese medicine with innovative tools that achieve long-lasting results in just one minute of daily use. Hayo’uFit is the UK’s first dedicated online Qigong platform, offering both courses and flow classes. I think it is relevant to the modern woman because she is time-poor. Our strapline is one-minute to self-care. Everyone needs to look after themselves, and these are enjoyable, simple techniques using quality tools and precious crystals.

How can crystals help our wellbeing?

Chinese medicine has a rich tradition of using crystals as medicine. The philosophy is that gemstones can support our Jing Qi (life essence), blood (circulation) and fluids (lymphatic drainage). I chose jade because this was traditionally used by the empresses of China. Jade is the empirical beauty crystal. It’s been used for thousands of years because it is the ultimate balance of yin and yang. It has remarkable cooling properties, is great for reducing inflammation and puffiness – and it’s gentle, so suitable for everyone.

Research studies show that, when heated, certified jade radiates healing far-infrared rays. It also produces negative ions. Negative ions are commonly seen in nature, being abundant in a waterfall and on the beach. When you get positive vibes while out in the great outdoors that is because of negative ions. Jade has a high output of negative ions, and this help to regenerate cells. Our Beauty Restorer is made from 100% Xiuyan jade. It is a type of serpentine jade that comes from a region of China renowned for the best quality jade in the world. 100% jade is much rarer than composite. You can tell it’s real because it is really smooth, it will differ slightly in colour as its natural, it is cold to touch and doesn’t break easily.

How can we bring them into our skincare routine and what benefits can women have from using this method?

Facial gua sha! This is a simple massage technique using a round-edged tool. It’s been widely practised in China for thousands of years. ‘Gua’ means to press-stroke, whilst ‘sha’ describes the temporary red flush that results. Facial gua sha stimulates the dermis to support collagen and elastin production and releases tension to relax your facial muscles. I believe it’s the single most effective technique for transforming your skin. Facial gua sha is a game-changer and many of my clients tell me how much they love the way it has transformed their skin. It has been shown in studies to exponentially increase circulation and aid lymphatic flow, release congestion and soothe sore eyes and skin, to brighten your complexion and leave you with a radiant glow.

How do we know which crystal to choose – can you give us a little detail on each crystal and what they should be used for?

Jade has always been a crystal of choice for the ancient technique of facial gua sha, revered for its restorative and cooling properties. Jade helps to balance the yin and yang in the body, so it’s a great all-rounder and the perfect starter crystal. Rose quartz is especially good to use in the morning or if you have sensitive, delicate or inflamed skin. And clear quartz is known as the ‘master healer’, it is great for clearing mental energy, so really good as an evening crystal.

How can we use the products to help us when we are working from home or staring at a computer screen all day?

There are two, in particular, I’d recommend here. The Body Tapper Bamboo and the Body Restorer. Get up every hour and tap yourself all over with the tapper for a minute, it’s instantly energizing. And the Body Restorer you can use over clothes to release muscular tension. It’s a metal gua sha tool and works so well at clearing qi stagnation due to lack of movement.

How important is it to you to use sustainable materials in your products?

So important! And we are striving to improve our CSR constantly. I think all businesses should. Our major contribution to sustainability is that we offer the ability to consume less. Our crystals are intended as one-time purchases. Buy one and it will last you a lifetime, replacing the need for disposable items that ultimately end up in landfill and in our oceans. We are continually driving change in terms of our packaging. We have moved to using recycled card and away from single-use plastic. We have no offices. And I’m committed to my ongoing work with charities that protect the environment.

We know that looking at Hi-tech vs traditional when it comes to beauty is something important to you – how do you think traditional methods such as Gua Sha can still be relevant today when there are many technical tools available?

Because it really works! The beauty industry is open-minded, yet discerning. If it works, it will last. Gua sha is the missing link in our skincare routine – it hits the zeitgeist. People want quick, easy solutions. The discerning customer is making conscious choices. It’s time-tested. These techniques have served over 1000s of years. And for the modern-day customer, time is more precious than money. And this is a simple technique. We crave simplicity in our lives. This is something that makes sense.

What is your top wellness tip?

Qigong! Qigong, which translates as ‘life, force, practice’, is quite simply the most incredible exercise. By strengthening your life force on the inside, you will see the results on the outside. Lifeforce is the very thing that makes you feel alive, energised and healthy – and the minute you start to practice you’ll feel the difference. If you are tired, lacking in energy, out of shape or simply not feeling great, trust me Qigong is for you. Qigong is a fundamental pillar of Chinese medicine. It is classed as a form of internal exercise. (any combination of slow, considered movements with breath and mental engagement, another example would be yoga. Qigong is, quite simply, the ultimate self-healing technique.

Many people exercise to improve the way they look or perhaps improve the health of their heart and lungs, but Chinese medicine says that while aerobic exercise does work those organs, it simultaneously taxes them. Qigong, on the other hand, works the muscles and nourishes all of the organs – but, crucially, doesn’t strain them. It boosts your oxygen uptake and circulation, but while your body is relaxed. This builds your capacity to store and generate your reserves of qi.

One of the things I love the most is that Qigong is suitable for everyone! According to Chinese medicine, your organs control the entire health of your body. This includes, amongst other things, your muscles, fascia, bones, body fat and any tendency towards weight imbalance. Look after your organs and you’ll see a knock-on positive effect on all of your health. Qigong will give you stamina without stress, and it will tone without pain. As you do the exercises, you’re balancing the whole body and, because they’re so gentle, they also suit older people, those recovering from illness and anyone else with physical or energetic limitations. Just because it’s gentle, don’t underestimate its power and efficacy.

What would you still like to achieve that you haven’t done yet?

We are planning to launch in America this year, which is hugely exciting – and we’ve also got some pioneering new products in the pipeline. So, growing the business, and also making progress with our sustainability goals. And setting up a charitable foundation, which is the first thing I’m planning on implementing once the business is solidly established.

In this issue we talk about International Women’s Day – what advice would you give to aspiring female entrepreneurs?

I always say that I’m not a businesswoman, I’m a woman in business. I’d like to think that my story illustrates how anyone can do it. I had no training, just a good idea and I got on with it and stuck with it. I have gumption, tenacity, passion and integrity. Those qualities in modern business are just as important as understanding how to read a spreadsheet!

What is the biggest challenge you face with spreading your message to others?

I would say probably just getting people to take a chance on something which sounds a bit “woo woo” on the face of it! Once people try it, they are amazed and they love it. It’s getting over that first hurdle. Five years ago, nobody wanted anything to do with facial gua sha, now it’s a global beauty trend.

What is the motto you live by?

Prevention is better than cure!

A recent study by Dior showed that our eyes determine 80% of our perceived age and 62% of our attractiveness to others. Especially in the current times when much of our faces are hidden behind a mask, our eyes reveal so much about us as people and we must preserve their beauty. Dior’s new Super Potent Eye Serum is revolutionising the eye area with its unique approach to science and beauty. Its unique transformative potential unveils the full power of the eyes at any age. “What is really striking is that the cosmetic industry is an innovation-based industry and there are innovations all the time. It never stops.” Said Patrick Choisy, Head of the Department of Innovation Natural Materials and Sustainable Development at LVMH Recherche. The innovation in this product is based on neuroscience. Years of research have looked at the power of our eyes and whether that power can be quantified and therefore increased. The impact of our lifestyle on our eyes is huge. From over-exposition to screens, sunlight, lack of sleep and tiredness, all of these elements can increase the rate of ageing and have a profound effect on our eyes. Dior experts have compared the latest knowledge in psychology, anatomy, aesthetics and neuroscience to develop a product that puts healthy, youthful-looking eyes at the forefront.

Patrick Choisy, Head of the Department of Innovation Natural Materials and Sustainable Development at LVMH Recherche

Dior Science developed an innovative protocol that calls on Eye Tracking, a methodology prised by scientists that scientifically proved that when viewers evaluate a new face, they automatically focus on the eye area. This is the power of our eyes and it is something that evolves with age and needs to be carefully nurtured. We know that ageing in the eye area is universal. But Dior wanted to discover more, so they launched a study with an inclusive approach to understand, measure and decipher the evolution of the eyes according to features. The study resulted in the founding of The Eye Power Index; a universal index of the signs of ageing in the eye area. By highlighting nine signs of ageing in the eyes, Dior was about to measure ageing in the eye area in an objective and universal manner for the first time.

In their research for the Eye Power Index, Dior Science identified two biological processes that lie behind the signs of ageing. Firstly, the eye area possesses fewer cutaneous mother cells. With age, the number of these cells doesn’t change but their energy potential is reduced by 50%. This discovery represents a major step forward in understanding ageing and lies behind the uniqueness and performance of the Capture Totale range. In the eye area, the skin is twice as fine as that in the cheeks. With age, cells in this area lose their energy and the area suffers a reduction in tonicity and requires skincare with targeted action.

Bring in Capture Totale, a range that has been pushing the frontiers and limits of cosmetics since it began. The new game-changing Super Potent Eye Serum features a formula of 92% natural ingredients, combined with a revolutionary applicator capable of increasing effectiveness with a special massage. “As far as the product is concerned, the way you apply it and the applicator is fundamental.” Explains Patrick Choisy. “You’ve seen the tutorials, and the application method of the product makes sense, you have to go from the inside to outside of the eye because that’s where the fine lines are.” This newly designed 3D Cryo-Flex applicator featured dual-patented innovation that increases the effectiveness of the product with every application. The flexible neck enables 360 application to every millimetre of the eye up to the brow bone. The applicator glides over the skin in optimal fashion, without any bumps or irritating and rubbing. Similar to a cutaneous massage protocol, the 3D-Cryo Flex applicator mechanically stimulates the skin. The entire area seems drained thanks to the seven micro-waves whose contours act according to the principles of acupressure. Deep within, micro-circulation seems stimulated and the area is instantly lifted and opened.

When it comes to the ingredients there are three key active ingredients in the formula. At the heart of the formula lies Longoza. Sourced on the island of Madagascar, Longoza is an extraordinary plant that has the power to grow back even when scorched by flames. “Longoza has a special intuition, it literally means “eternal” in Madagascan so that was the first clue.” Explains Choisy. The ingredient was first discovered in 1992 but it wasn’t until 2006 that it was ready for use within the Capture Totale range. “The procurement of the plants in Madagascar is not easy.” Said Choisy. “You have to establish confidence with the communities there, you have to work around the women who are harvesting the Longoza and it was a very long process to set up.” He continues; “then we decided to have a continuous improvement process where every year we have a programme that ensures that there will be improvements in the quality of what we are doing and the quality of life of the people working for us.” But this plant is worth the hard work because of its unique properties. “It is one of the first to start to grow again after the soil is burnt during harvesting and it has a vital power. So it takes a lot of time to secure the ingredient, a lot of time to secure the excellency, and then continuous improvement in order to reduce our impact on the environment and to progressively discover the biological functions of the plant.” Said Choisy. He finished by saying; “every year we have new results because we know the plant better and we can extract the ingredient more efficiently in order to make the chemicals more efficient in the next generation. It’s a huge amount of work.”

Once the ingredient is sourced in Madagascar there is a long process that it enters. Longoza extract, cultivated in the Dior gardens of Madagascar, undergoes a rigorous eco-transformation procedure, guaranteeing that the full potential of its seeds is preserved. The technology stemming from Longoza, the bio-cellular Longoza complex, helps to stimulate the regenerative power of cutaneous mother cells, which are even more precious in an area of the face where they are less abundant. It acts as a wave of energy, to help completely revitalise the eye area. Two further active ingredients, Active Rye and Acetylated hyaluronic acid firm and penetrate the skin for a plumping, hydrating effect.

When making a product such as this real, visible results are crucial and this was key in the development of the serum. The texture of Super Potent Eye Serum is both light and comfortable, refreshing and milky. It penetrates immediately, as though fusing with the eye area. But Dior wanted something more to ensure that the product was applied in a way that it would get straight to work. So Dior facialists developed a four-step Alpha massage technique for application. With successive applications of one minute per massage, a relaxing effect is seen in the facial muscles. Thanks to this daily routine, the eye area is firmer and energized. The power of the eyes is increased. See the step-by-step guide to application below:

Cryo-draining

In one application, this exercise refreshes the entire eye area.

Draw the alpha symbol starting at the temple and moving towards the lower eyelid pressing as you move to the inner corner, then move up to the upper eyelid.

Repeat 2 to 3 times on each eye to reduce puffiness, refresh and awaken the eyes.

Smoothing

Ideal to soften dark circles, fine lines and wrinkles.

Begin by gliding the applicator across the lower eyelid, from the inner to the outer corners of the eye, to illuminate dark circles and smooth wrinkles.

On the upper eyelid, carry out the same movement from the inner corner following the eyebrow to the crow’s feet.

Repeat 2 or 3 times on each eye to alleviate eye imperfections.

Lifting

The power of youth in 30 seconds per day.

Lift the upper eyelid and move the applicator across the brow bone, smoothing and stretching the eyebrow upwards to lift the eye toward the brow bone.

Repeat 2 or 3 times on each eyelid to fight drooping, to lift and firm.

Sculpting.

Without the applicator, lift the end of the eyebrow and carry out a rolling massage movement with the fingertips.

5 seconds on each eyebrow to re-sculpt, redefine and lift the eyebrow.

Fine Blooms: How To Introduce Florals Into Your Home

Nisrine El Lababidi Moghraby, Founder of Harfnoon Design Studio on Introducing Florals Into Your Home for Ramadan

Designing a space is never truly done — there is always an opportunity to incorporate a treasure from a recent getaway, or add a newly collected art piece to your gallery wall, or top your living room credenza with a fresh bouquet. Now imagine this process on a dining table as it comes to life with your loved ones over sumptuous food during Ramadan. Working with beautiful flowers from Ame Studio, I decided to set beautiful tables, topped with delicately designed flowers for Iftar through a concept I call “Blue Moon.”

The first table setup is elegant with a colour palette of royal blue, embellished with gold and white metals. Don’t be afraid to mix and match textures and materials. On my table, I used agate stone, brushed and shiny metals, ceramics, glass, china and linen. This is laid on a beautiful grey treated wooden dining table. The contrasts not only bring visual interest but are tactile as well. I like to start in the middle and work my out. This allows me to map out the spatial area of the table and build it with interesting heights and elements that make the eye travel with ease between them. My choice of flower arrangements for this look is glamorous and overflowing with natural beauty to complement the materials used. Each flower is busy and colourful which creates a wonderful impact without too much effort and helps break up the monotonous colours of the table, thus becoming the showpiece.

For your arrangement to work, you must select the correct vase. When I am buying for myself or sourcing for an event or photoshoot, I gravitate towards unique and rare flowers which I find at Ame Studio. Typically, I opt for bright colours and unique textures. But I also stick to the basics: peonies, hydrangeas, tulips and Cala Lilies — you can always count on these varieties to photograph well! For the vase, I decided to go with a hand-painted chinoiserie complemented by simple glass and marble effect vases. They are sturdy and low to the ground. I cut the stems of each flower short and arranged them close together.

Once the flowers are placed in the middle, you can build on the table design, starting with the charger plates. I chose gold plates as I feel they are timeless and will go with any plate set. On top goes the serving plate, then the cutlery placement. Now we move on to filling the negative spaces with candles placed on the gorgeous agate stones. I wanted a symmetrical setup that could easily be repeated on longer tables with more guests. Then I added napkins and decided to tie them for a more unexpected treatment. The embellished hand-painted plates are perfect for serving pastries and follow the theme, while the metal bowls are great for filling with nuts and dates. The result is just so visually enticing you might forget you are actually hungry at Iftar!

For the Persian Blush Table setup, I opted for a modern setting because of its unexpected and irreverent effect where the chosen elements were based on textures, shapes, and colours. Starting with a clear crystal vase, we decided to show off its beauty and details, by arranging the elegant pink flower in a way that is almost overflowing. Using the versatile golden charger plates, I top them with golden marble effect plates and lay the napkins with agate rings on them. Again, it is the elegance of the blush tones against the brass and golden white shades that oozes sweetness. I then added embellishment to the table with candles, stone candle holders and agate plate mats. The brass plate also adds an interesting element, as do the agate napkin holders. Always try to add your own elegant touch, either with a handwritten menu or a small message for your guests. You may even put a small giveaway box on each plate for your guests to remember the amazing lunch or dinner they had at your event – get creative! I added pomegranates here to make it fun and the overall effect is just beyond words don’t you agree?!

Suhoor Table

For the Suhoor table setup, I continued with the floral theme and decided to bring nature to the design. This style is meant for a more contemporary and casual setting. I chose a white vessel because of its interesting shape and neutral colour which doesn’t distract from the flowers inside it. I always try to create an interesting composition when working with tropical cuts. I tend to lean towards asymmetry and create linear shapes within the composition. Go wild with this one — there are no rules! Starting in the middle, I like to place the vases in a trio and build around them, almost in a self-serving station, where the teacups are laid out side by side and the cake stand completes the flower setup. The teapot, sugar and milk can all stay on the tray – and you can prepare two pots for your guests (one can be your traditional tea, while the other one is herbal). Napkins are also pre-prepared on a tray and kept on the side next to the cutlery which I displayed on a stone plate in green. For the flowers, I wanted to play on the intense colours so used Yellow Dahlias, Peonies and orange tulips. I placed two vases on one side and one green vase on the other side for balance. Even the cake was beautifully dressed with those selections. You can also introduce colours in unexpected vessels to hold flowers like a teapot or teacup! Even bowls or simple additional cake stands can act in place of a vase. For the cake stand, I used a makeshift structural gold vase to hold it which mimics its shape.

Did You Know?

Because floral foam is dense, porous, and lightweight, it’s easy to cut into virtually any shape. In addition to keeping its shape while wet, it can hold large quantities of water, increasing the life of your flowers. It also lends your flower stems support, giving you more control with your arrangements. Cutting stems at an angle gives them access to more water, prolonging the attractive life of flowers and cutting stems underwater can prevent air bubbles and help the flowers to absorb more moisture.

Alber Elbaz Passes Away at 59

Alber Elbaz has sadly died at the age of 59.

It is believed the designer passed away in hospital in Paris from COVID-19.

The designer was one of the most iconic names in the industry and his revival of Lanvin will forever live in the brands legacy. He joined Lanvin in 2001 and his elegant, feminine designs catapulted the brand into the forefront of the industry.

He was known for his outspoken words and bold personality, but mostly for his love of making women look and feel beautiful in his designs.

In 2015 Elbaz was let go from the brand which saw him take a break from fashion. But his long-awaited return to the fashion industry came just this year with the unveiling of his new project AZ Factory which was created to change the way women shop and be inclusive to all shapes and sizes.

Johann Rupert, Chairman at Richemont said in a statement; “It was with shock and enormous sadness that I heard of Alber’s sudden passing. Alber had a richly deserved reputation as one of the industry’s brightest and most beloved figures. I was always taken by his intelligence, sensitivity, generosity and unbridled creativity. He was a man of exceptional warmth and talent, and his singular vision, sense of beauty and empathy leave an indelible impression.”

He continued; “Alber will be greatly missed by all of us who had the good fortune to know him or work with him. On behalf of all of my colleagues at Richemont and AZ Factory, I wish to extend our sincerest condolences to his family and friends. On a personal note I would like to add that I have lost not only a colleague but a beloved friend. Rest in peace Alber.”

He will be deeply missed.

Dr Rose Ingleton, Founder of Rose Ingleton MD Shares Her Inspiration And Her Secrets To Success

Born and raised in Jamaica, Dr Rose Ingleton had a dream to bring a part of her heritage to her own skincare brand.

After working as a dermatologist for over twenty years, Dr Ingleton started her skincare line that brings together ingredients inspired by the island of Jamaica. Ingleton wanted to bring the ease and beauty of island life to her work and she decided to do that through a clean, effortless skincare line. The essence of Jamaica is present throughout all of the products with ingredients derived from the island, as well as the simplicity of the skincare routines. Dr Ingleton believes in simplicity and consistency and it is these two values that fuel her passion as a doctor and entrepreneur. Each product in Dr Ingleton’s line addresses the most common skin concerns: anti-ageing, blemishes, dullness, redness, and hydration. At the core of the brand is the Jamaican SuperFruit Blend; a secret blend of five highly concentrated extracts that promote a youthful, more radiant complexion. We discover more.

What do you believe are the main factors that affect our skin today and what can we do to combat them?

The main factors that affect our skin are environmental pollutants and excessive sun exposure. To combat the environmental pollutants that we encounter when we go outdoors each day (e.g. cigarette smoke, pollution, etc) I usually recommend incorporating high levels of antioxidants into both your diet through fish oils, salmon, blueberries etc. and into your skincare through Vitamin C, Vitamin E, vitamin B3/niacinamide. To protect your skin against sun damage I recommend routine daily use of sunscreen before leaving home each day.

We recently saw you participating in the Net-A-Porter Beauty Festival – why do you think it’s important for women to talk about beauty and wellness today?

It is important for women to talk about beauty and wellness because this is also a part of the package of general healthcare and self-care. Taking care of your skin and your wellness are just as important as taking care of your physical and mental health.

You spoke of using skincare that works for you – how do we go about defining what our skin needs and finding the right products?

Defining which skincare products are right for your skin requires you to first look in the mirror and do an assessment of what you see and what you would like to improve on. Once you identify what the skin concerns are, then you should shop for products that specifically target these issues and nothing else. Do go for the most famous or the most product, instead, be specific and targeted in your product selection. Read the packaging. The information you need to assist you in selecting should be all there. I also recommend choosing products that are clean and backed by science, and most importantly easy-to-use. Keep your regimen simple, so that you are more likely to stay consistent. And finally, give the products time to work. Don’t switch constantly from product to product.

What can you tell us about your skincare products and what makes them unique?

My skincare products were inspired by my patients’ specific needs as seen in my dermatology practice over the past two decades. Additionally, my line was inspired by my home island of Jamaica. I created a “secret sauce” which I named the Jamaican SuperFruit Blend. It is made up of five fruit extracts that are native to Jamaica and also have proven skin benefits. My products are unique because of this blend, and because it was designed based on my clinical experience with thousands of patients over the years as I helped them to successfully address their most common skincare concerns. Another unique feature is that it’s a simple two-step effective regimen: a booster serum + a moisturizer. Everything you would need is packed into two individual products. Simple.

What is your position on natural vs. non-natural ingredients?

Natural ingredients to me imply that they are derived from nature. My product line incorporates fruit ingredients derived from nature (extracts of oranges, lemon, sugarcane, bilberry and sugar maple) and that is a very appealing feature to today’s consumers as they strive to use products that are as “clean” as possible. However, these ingredients are still being manufactured in a lab, not picked from the tree and put into a jar. The selection of non-carcinogenic ingredients and the avoidance of artificial fragrance and parabens etc. also add to the appeal of “natural” products. I interpret “non-natural” to mean that all the ingredients are from man-made chemicals.

What is the minimum we can all be doing when it comes to our skincare routine?

Keep it simple and stay consistent. At a minimum, I would say: Wash your face (especially at the end of the day), always wear an antioxidant and sunscreen before heading out. Always apply a targeted skincare product at night before going to bed.

What is something you would recommend for women in the Middle East particularly those who are living in a hot, humid climate?

Always wear a serum that is rich in antioxidants (like vitamin C, vitamin E, niacinamide) before heading out into the elements. It is really important to protect your skin from the impact of the hot sun, wind and air pollution that might be encountered when outdoors. And definitely always wear a sun protection moisturiser. This can be a very lightweight product which is better suited for humid climates and might even slightly tinted so that you can get a subtle hint of colour without having to wear heavy make-up.

We know you are very passionate about the industry being inclusive – what do you think luxury brands should be doing to increase their awareness of this and become more inclusive?

I would love to see more inclusiveness in the luxury brand sector, especially by having more brands created by people of colour represented on the shelves of luxury retailers. I would love to see better colour palettes that are more “inclusive” and representative of the wide variety of skin hues in society. There should be more options for darker-skinned individuals, and these products should be made with the highest quality ingredients. Essentially, I want to see more truly inclusive luxury products.

What is your top skincare tip?

Always wash your face at the end of the day! It is imperative that you get rid of all the dirt, pollution, make-up and grime from your skin before going to bed.

What would you still like to achieve that you haven’t done yet?

It relates to product development. I am currently on a mission to create the best mineral-based sunscreen that will look perfect even on darker skin. Finding such a product that does not look grey or pasty white on darker skin has been my “pet peeve” for many years and I am convinced that I can figure this out. Stay tuned!

In this issue we talk about International Women’s Day – what advice would you give to aspiring female entrepreneurs?

I would encourage them to look to the many examples of other female entrepreneurs who came before them and reach out to them for some mentoring. We are very fortunate to be living in a time when there are so many brilliant female entrepreneurs who have figured out what it takes to be successful. You can always learn from them, even if they are from a completely different industry than yours, and hopefully strategically bypass many of the mistakes and difficulties that women encounter on their path in business.

What was and is the biggest challenge you face with spreading your message to others?

My greatest challenge has been navigating social media and maximising my reach to my audience there, but doing so organically. It has been a very effective medium for me as I get great responses to my appearances on IG Live and IGTV events. In the coming year, I will work with marketing and social media experts discover how to continue to grow my footprint there.

What is the motto you live by?

Simplicity and consistency are the keys to life. Both in life in general and in skincare.

What is the one product you could not live without?

The perfect all-in-one moisturiser. That would be the ROSE Ingleton MD Signature Moisturizer.

Salvatore Ferragamo Launches Limited Edition Sustainable Bag

Salvatore Ferragamo’s commitment to sustainability is highlighted through the new Earth Top Handle Bag.

Presented in just 500 exclusive pieces this new interpretation of the iconic  Top Handle Bag created by Fiamma Ferragamo in the nineties, honours the bond between the brand and the Made In Italy Tradition, as well as the House’s commitment to using low impact materials. The Earth Top Handle Bag is made of FSC certified cork which is a natural and renewable resource that causes no harm to the trees when harvested. In addition, the lining is crafted from pure linen, a natural and biodegradable material; zipper tape and thread are made of 100% recycled and certified polyester, and the bag’s colour is finished with water-based treatments.

CEO Micaela le Divelec Lemmi says: “Authentic craftsmanship, creativity and innovation are Salvatore Ferragamo’s core values. So is sustainability. Salvatore Ferragamo, during his years of activity, was never afraid to innovate and use new materials. Today we continue to do so, with a look at the present. The experimental spirit, the Italian inventiveness, the sense of beauty and refinement, the connection between our feelings and social and environmental responsibility, are essential characteristics of our collections”.

Ferragamo has long chosen to adopt a social responsibility strategy that, in line with the Founder’s values, pursues objectives of economic growth while taking into account the social and environmental impact. The Earth Top Handle bag has obtained the ISO 14067 – Product Carbon Footprint certification, by virtue of which it is possible to quantify the emissions due to its manufacturing and compensate them, making the project “carbon neutral”.

The Earth Top Handle bag was launched as part of the prestigious Ferragamo’s Creations collection, a limited-edition series of numbered replicas of men’s and women’s designs from the archive that have made the history of fashion and are now available again.

Femininity & Grace: Omani Fashion Designer Noor Anwar Al Bahrani Discusses Embracing Femininity Through Her Designs

Noor Anwar Al Bahrani launched her eponymous fashion label during the global pandemic. While the turbulent time was not in the plans for the designer, she was able to overcome many challenges to find a place in the market that caters to today’s modern woman.

Born and raised in Oman, Noor Anwar Al Bahrani studied Electronic Engineering before changing to a career in fashion design. After the birth of her first daughter, Noor soon realised her lifelong love for fashion should be channelled into her own label, and so launched Noor Al Bahrani in 2020. Noor’s designs are feminine and modern with a unique twist on tradition. Her soft colour palettes are both flattering and easy to wear. Inspired by nature and timeless storytelling, Noor creates dreamy modest pieces that are a reflection of her personal style and unwavering vision. This Ramadan, Noor launches a collection dedicated to the desert rose, a unique and beautiful flower that represents the femininity of women and new life. We find out more about the collection and her journey to creating her own label.

You studied electronic engineering before starting your own fashion line – what first inspired you to move into the world of fashion?

I have always had a love for fashion and it was something I wanted to pursue. During our travels, my husband and I would often discuss fashion and how it resonates with each destination we’re in. I realised that the market was missing something which motivated me to design pieces for myself and this led to the start of Noor Al Bahrani.

What were some of the reactions you received from those around you when you decided to change your career path?

I received very supportive and encouraging feedback from my family and friends. They knew how much I loved fashion and believed that this was the right step for me.

You launched your brand at quite a turbulent time in the world – what are some of the challenges you faced and how did you overcome them?

Going into lockdown soon after I launched my brand came as a shock to me! Navigating through this was a challenging but rewarding experience. I saw it as an opportunity to build my brand presence and create a strong sense of brand identity.

What is a lesson you have learnt from this year?

The biggest lesson I learned was that if you continue to work hard and preserve your company then you cross any tough waters.

Who is the woman you design for?

She is a woman who loves dreamy, romantic silhouettes and wants to embrace her feminine side.

Tell us about the Spring/Summer 2021 collection

The Spring/Summer 2021 collection is inspired by the desert rose. This season, I wanted to translate its beauty and vibrant colour into designs that exude femininity and elegance.

There are some beautiful details in the pieces, can you share a little about your choice of materials and details?

To symbolise the inspiration of the desert rose, I have incorporated tone-on-tone flowers handcrafted from feathers for a novel take on statement details. I worked with chiffon and silk fabrics as I love the luxurious feel it adds to each design. I also played with crepe, tulle and lace to bring out the intricate detailing I wanted to emphasise.

You introduced childrenswear this season – tell us a little about that and how it complements the ladies pieces.

I have always wanted to design “Mommy & Me” looks as my oldest daughter would often ask me to design dresses for her which fuelled my passion further. The childrenswear pieces take the best details from the ladies pieces and translate them into designs that are perfect for the little ones.

How do you think your heritage inspires you in what you do?

My designs are inspired by my heritage as I like to work with traditional silhouettes and add Noor Al Bahrani’s signature feminine details to it.

We are soon approaching the month of Ramadan – what does this month mean to you?

Ramadan is a beautiful and special month that I consider a time to be grateful for all our blessings and a time to give and help those in need.

Can you share some tips on dressing during Ramadan as well as for Eid celebrations?

During Ramadan, I love to dress in flowy kaftans in light fabrics for the warm days. While during Eid, I opt for pieces that have more embellishment and pair them with heels and jewellery as it is a time for celebration. I believe each person should be confident in what they wear and feel beautiful, so always choose pieces that best suit you.

What is your first memory of fashion?

My first memory of fashion is playing pretend with my Barbie dolls. I used to love choosing their clothes and matching different outfits for them.

What is your vision for the future of your brand?

I would love to see Noor Al Bahrani stocked at retailers across the world. My dream is to see my designs at Harrods one day!

What is something you would like to see in regards to designers in the region being recognised on an international scale?

Designers in the region have an immense amount of talent and a creative eye for fusing tradition with modernity. I would love to see designers from the region recognised for this talent and as fashion that surpasses the borders of the Middle East.

How do you overcome challenges?

I view every challenge as a learning curve to become better at what I do.

You are a proud mum – how do you juggle family and work life?

I love my family and I love my work so I do my best to balance by working from home and from the workshop. I have also prepared a space for my kids at my workshop so that I get more time with them. They are a source of energy for me.

What is the professional motto you live by?

Follow your passion, be flexible and work with love.

How would you describe your brand in one word?

Graceful.

Fatma Alhashimi Founder and Designer of HASHIMI on Her latest Ramadan Collection

Fatma Alhashimi established her brand HASHIMI in 2016. Her designs focus on timeless, elegant designs that have a modern touch and bring together the styles of the East and the West.

AlHashimi looks to create clean, simple silhouettes but add a modern twist with minimalist details. Founder and Designer Fatma Alhashimi was born in Dubai and started her entrepreneurial journey creating clothes at home. This passion soon turned into a business venture as she gained a glowing client base of women in the region. After realising the potential, AlHashimi decided to take her small business to the next level with the development of HASHIMI. In 2019, she opened her first boutique in Dubai, located at the popular Wasl51 complex. The store also houses the atelier where the designer creates her latest styles and the production team brings them to life. This in-house approach allows HASHIMI’s pieces to be created from start to finish in the UAE.

This Ramadan, HASHIMI presents a capsule collection for Ramadan. Inspired by nature the collection exudes an effortless sensibility. Combining classic silhouettes with a bohemian spirit AlHashimi recreates the lines of nature through handcrafted embroidery and signature detailing. The neutral colour palette highlights understated sophistication in beige, blush, blue, green and grey. Lightweight fabrics create fluid movement in soft cotton, airflow silk and organza while a recycled crisp fabric and Broderie Anglaise adds structure.

Tell us a little about the new vision for your brand.

My vision remains the same as when I started. To create timeless, wearable styles for the modern woman. I’ve now set my sights on the international market so I am taking steps to reach this.

Who is the woman you design for?

The HASHIMI woman is confident with a carefree spirit. She is not afraid to be who she truly is and loves to express herself through her fashion choices.

What can you tell us about your Ramadan 2021 collection?

My Ramadan 2021 collection has a natural and effortless sensibility mixed with some bohemian elements. I was inspired by lines and patterns found in nature which I’ve incorporated into handcrafted embroidery and details. The silhouettes are relaxed and flowy, making them wearable for the summer months.

Your collections bring together both Western and Middle Eastern styles – how do you aim to bring together these two worlds with your designs?

I like to reference my heritage through silhouettes while combining international influences into the details. My Abayas and kaftans are versatile so they can be worn in this region or if you are travelling they could be worn to the beach. I sell my abayas separately (rather than as a set with a matching inner dress) so that women can style them over jeans and a top or with a midi dress.

This past year has been very difficult for all – what is a lesson you have learnt and have you changed anything about your company moving forward?

I have learnt to slow down and trust the process. We are all on our own journey so embrace where you are at and always continue to grow.

What is the biggest challenge you face today with your company?

The biggest challenge I’m facing today is the effects of COVID-19. It’s made people re-evaluate how they spend their money because they know they may not have a job next month. Gatherings are still restricted so that means women need fewer outfits for occasions, so all of these factors are affecting my business.

Tell us a little about your Dubai boutique – what can we expect when we visit?

My boutique is located in Wasl51 and has a modern, minimalist vibe. Natural daylight lights the space so it feels very welcoming and open. There’s even a comfortable seating area so your husband can wait while you shop! Wasl51 also has a lot of cool cafes so why not make a day out of it?

What is a message you would give to other aspiring female entrepreneurs?

Just go for it! If you wait for the right time you’ll never start, so if you have a strong vision and want to pursue it, do it!

We are soon approaching the month of Ramadan – what does this month mean to you and how will you spend it?

To me, Ramadan is about family. It’s a time for us to reconnect and spend quality time together. This year due to COVID-19 we will be keeping it low key and spending time at home with our immediate family.

How do you think your heritage inspires you in what you do?

My heritage gives me a sense of pride which I like to portray through my designs. I want to show my clients that you can still reference your roots with a modern touch.

Can you share some tips on dressing during Ramadan as well as dressing for Eid celebrations?

During the day I like to be comfortable so a lightweight kaftan is usually best. In the evenings I will dress up a bit more by adding heels and statement jewellery. For Eid, we usually dress up but due to COVID-19 I’ll be keeping it a bit more relaxed this year.

What is your first memory of fashion?

My first memory is from our trips to London back in the nineties. The streets of London are so inspiring when it comes to fashion especially iconic destination such as Carnaby Street and Oxford Street. We used to experiment with our style when we were in London because back there was no fashion scene in Dubai. My mum was also incredibly fashionable so she was a big inspiration to me.

What is your biggest achievement so far and what would you still like to achieve?

Firstly my kids, and secondly everything my brand has achieved so far. I would like to expand internationally, so that’s the next goal to achieve.

Who or what is your biggest inspiration?

My inspiration is the everyday woman. Whether she is a housewife, an entrepreneur or a student. I’m inspired by creating pieces that can suit all types of women around the world.

As a designer in the Arab world, what would you say is your biggest challenge?

My biggest challenge is standing out from the competition and finding new ways to differentiate myself.

What is the professional motto you live by?

To always be driven to create and to always do it with love and not by force.

How would you describe your brand in one word?

Effortless.

An Icon For an Icon: Julia Roberts Stars in Chopard’s Latest Campaign

Julia Roberts shares her thoughts on happiness as she stars in the new Happy Sport campaign.

Hollywood actress Julia Roberts is the perfect embodiment of the Happy Sport campaign. With that huge smile and infectious personality, the actress represents all this collection stands for. The latest campaign starring Julia was shot by filmmaker Xavier Dolan and captures the vibrant and undeniably joyful spirit of the line.

In the short film that accompanies the launch Julia Roberts and Chopard successfully convey the vivacious tenacity of the unbreakable bond that has consistently made them shine in a shared constellation. Here we find out what makes Julia happy and what it means to be a free-spirited woman today.

What is something that makes you happy instantly?

The sunrise. Instantly is very specific.

What is a movie that makes you happy?

The Philadelphia Story is a movie that makes me happy, to think about or to watch.

What are your top happiness tips?

Firstly be kind to others; secondly surround yourself with loving, kind, compassionate people; and thirdly kissing, followed by dancing.

What are your favourite qualities in a woman?

Depth, soulfulness and just a real personal strength.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Travel.

What makes you laugh?

Cleverness; not so much things that are funny, but things that are clever: a thoughtful thread to humour.

What do dancing diamonds evoke to you?

Perhaps the idea that something is going to happen!

How does your Happy Sport watch make you feel?

There is something about having a watch and every time you look at it seeing all these sparkling diamonds whirling around; it’s pretty awesome and truly good stuff.

What does being a free-spirited woman mean today?

Being comfortable in your convictions and sharing your convictions with those around you. Not all women have those liberties and I am very grateful that I have them.

How important to you is responsible luxury?

I would say that the idea of responsible luxury is something that not enough brands pay attention to. The thing with a Maison like Chopard is that it has really pioneered the idea of having a conscience, leading the change and setting an example for other brands to follow.

What is so special about Chopard?

Chopard just represents this timeless idea of elegance and sparkle and being ladylike. You kind of think: “When I grow up I want to be having a great time and wearing watches and earrings by Chopard”… and now look at me, I’m all grown up!

What is your favourite motto?

The motto that I repeat the most is “no way out but through”.

What’s your present state of mind?

I am really happy right now; it’s been such a beautiful day and I have felt such a really great sense of kinship that I had not expected today, so I’m super happy.

Rich in powerful aromas the scent of tobacco has inspired the latest scent from Maison Christian Dior. With a hint of liquorice and fruity notes, this surprisingly luminous and cheerful fragrance is both powerful and soft. Thanks to its unique choice of ingredients this luxury scent evokes travel and freedom with a soft smoky feel. “I wanted to revisit the classic composition of a “tobacco” by creating a surprising scent based on a blend of smoke-flavoured tobacco. I wrapped the delights and the plumes of smoke in sweet and fruity notes that are warm and joyful. Tobacolor is as powerful as it is cheerful. It is a perfume to which one becomes attached, like a comfortable, enveloping addiction.” Said François Demachy, Dior Perfumer-Creator

Le Gemme Astrea combines a dusky saffron essence with a base of Sambac jasmine and honey, with a touch of gourmand. This dreamy and distinctive fragrance envelops you in the mysteries of the night and reveals an enchanting celestial escape. Le Gemme Azaran is inspired by the intenseness of saffron and is offered in a fresh, spicy, warm and leathery presentation. Emporio Armani’s new masculine fragrance pays tribute to the absolute power of love. This Fougère Oriental Ambery scent for men is invitingly liquorous, sensual, and addictive. Composed by perfumer Cécile Matton, the fragrance opens with a new, fresh, and intoxicating facet: a subtle rum accord that blends with bergamot for a sparkling effect, and then elemi, a resin-like scent to reveal a fresh, spicy, and ambery aspect. The heart of the fragrance combines davana with its aromatic, liquorous and fruity facets, and Diva lavender heart from France, to create a powerfully aromatic appeal. At the base, the sweetness of a glazed chestnut accord is intensified by smoky cedarwood. Fashionistas might recognise Hedingham Castle in South East England as the backdrop of the iconic Isabella Blow and Lee McQueen shoot by photographer Gary Wallis in the nineties.

This unique property is one of the country’s oldest buildings at an impressive 900 years old and with many of the original details still preserved offers authenticity and a touch of history.

If you decide to have your wedding at the castle you will benefit from not just the castle but the entire Hedingham Estate including the magnificent Castle, the beautiful Mansion House with its elegant rooms and Ballroom Marquee, and the charming Garden Cottage and Medieval Lodge surrounded by glorious Essex countryside.

If you’re dreaming of a fairytale wedding, spend an enchanting two nights with your most cherished friends and family and create memories that will last a lifetime.

How your weekend wedding might look:

The Wedding Eve

3pm onwards

Guests start arriving to settle into their rooms followed by a stroll around the beautiful, historic grounds to work up an appetite for supper. The estate can provide thoughtfully curated welcome baskets for your guests to enjoy when they arrive at their room. Think locally sourced treats to nibble on, a map of walks around the grounds, a little bottle of sun cream or even flip flops for dancing…

5pm As the afternoon draws on, host drinks in the Castle Garrison, with guests spilling out onto the lawn for ice-breaker garden games and croquet.

7pm A casual supper of pizza in the atmospheric Tapestry Room, or perhaps you would prefer Mediterranean sharing platters or Moroccan street food; whatever you fancy, our fantastic chefs can cater to your every need.

9pm As twilight sets in, gather round the firepit on the bailey for toasting marshmallows or retire inside for board games before heading to your room for a peaceful and comfy night’s sleep before the big day.

The Big Day

9am Enjoy a leisurely breakfast in The Garden Cottage with your bridal party, while the rest of the group and groomsmen breakfast in the Ashurst Suite of the Mansion House.
10.00am     Unwind with some alfresco yoga in the grounds with your girlfriends while the boys head off into the woods for a spot of archery or falconry. There are so many activities to choose from to entertain your guests while you get ready. Why not take an art class by the lake or a round of golf at the local course.

11am Return to The Garden Cottage to start getting ready with your bridal party.

12pm    After their morning activity, the groomsmen go caveman and enjoy a hearty BBQ lunch in the woods to set them up for the day ahead – think ultimate burgers, posh dogs and a bucket of icy cold beers.

2pm Guests start arriving and head over to the Castle to eagerly await the ceremony. Tea, coffee and cake are served in the Garrison.

3pm   The bridal party is ready and it’s finally time to get married in one of the most romantic venues in the country. Say your vows in the candlelit Banqueting Hall of the Castle. Or, if you prefer, you may also marry in the stunning landscaped gardens or at the grand Medieval Church of St. Nicholas at the bottom of the drive.

4pm Once you are married, it’s confetti on the Tudor bridge followed by cocktails on the Mansion House lawn.

4.30pm Make the most of the stunning scenery and explore the grounds with your photographer for that showstopper first portrait together. While you are having your photos taken, keep your guests entertained with a wandering acoustic band, magician or how about a flyover from the nearby airfield?
5.30pm   It’s time for your wedding breakfast. After the heart-warming, and most likely teary speeches, dine in style in our elegant Ballroom Marquee, seating up to 150 guests.

8pm Evening guests arrive and once you’ve cut your cake, it’s party time! Dance the night away under the magical starlit ceiling of the Ballroom dance floor to a live band or DJ, or surprise your guests with a jaw-dropping choreographed first dance routine they’ll never forget.

9pm  After all that dancing, treat your guests to a late night supper of fish and chips, woodfired pizza or how about a heavenly cheese bar to round off the evening perfectly?

12pm Guests drift off to their rooms or wind down in The Medieval Lodge, full of love from a magnificent day.

The Recovery

11am   Recount the weekend’s events with friends old and new over a lazy brunch in the Castle’s Tapestry Room. Spill out onto the picnic benches and blankets and soak up the sun on the historic bailey. Guests can drift in and out as they please or stay in bed and enjoy the peaceful quiet of the surrounding Essex countryside. Enjoy some fresh air with a stroll around the lake, the ancient ramparts and beautiful woodland.

Or head out and explore the chocolate-box village of Castle Hedingham and the surrounding pretty villages.

3pm Say your goodbyes and head home, or to your honeymoon, with incredibly happy new memories of your weekend wedding at Hedingham Castle.

The bold and vibrant works displayed at COYA focus on different elements of nature and are primarily defined by textures and bold shades of colours and contrast. Her palette knife technique on canvas allows her to create cubistic pieces that look almost three-dimensional in appearance.

The latest exhibition reiterates COYA’s Dubai’s support and dedication to local talent as they continue to combine the stunning interiors of the restaurant with contemporary art. COYA Dubai’s dining guests will have the chance to view the latest exhibition on display until May 22.

Fun & Fearless: A&E Reviews the New Jeep Wrangler Rubicon

The new Jeep Wrangler Rubicon is a driving experience you won’t forget and a design that’s guaranteed to turn heads.

Having never driven a Jeep Wrangler before I was intrigued to discover what all the fuss was about. Of course, I had heard that the “Jeep experience” was unlike any other and but until you experience it for yourself, you’ll never understand.

This was a journey of discovery, fun and freedom as I explored parts of the Emirates I had never been. Initially, it was the colour of this particular model that caught my eye – who wouldn’t want to drive in a car with the shade name “Bikini Pearl?” But I soon learned this super-fun, durable ride is perfect for those looking to explore outside the city and enjoy the drive. Known as the undisputable off-road champion the Jeep Wrangler is perfect for both experienced off-roaders or beginners like me. Taking you from the city to the desert you’re guaranteed to have fun, but comfort and excellence are also key.

The Jeep Wrangler began its story in 1986. Designed as a car that could fulfil the needs of both on-road and off-road driving and it has since become an icon thanks to the many incarnations of its unique design and its popularity with the younger generation, especially in the Middle East. The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon is today one of the most popular models in the range and its versatility makes it perfect for exploring the region.

The design of the Rubicon is instantly recognisable. Featuring traditional Jeep codes including the round headlights, seven-slot grille, the trapezoidal wheel arches and the visible hinges; as well as the folding windshield the sport bar; removable doors and the open-air configurations with a hard top or soft top. The exterior design is bold and rugged with a wide stance and lowered beltline with larger windows for better outward visibility, especially out on extreme trails. The particular model we tested featured the unique Bikini Pearl finish – perfect for ladies and those looking to have a fun and fabulous time! This head-turning car is sure to get you noticed.

The 2021 model sees the legendary seven-slot grille feature a more modern look with both of the outer grille slats intersecting with the headlights, paying homage to the legendary CJ model. The top of the keystone-shaped grille has been gently swept back for improved aerodynamics. On the Rubicon model, the LED headlights and fog lights feature crisp white lighting that adds to the Wrangler’s distinctive look. The Jeep Wrangler is a unique vehicle thanks to the several combinations offered to owners to enjoy open-air adventure and,  as the only authentic full open-air 4×4 SUV available on the market, features various windshield and top solutions that allow drivers to choose multiple configuration possibilities.

When it comes to the drive, the 2021 edition is the most capable Wrangler ever, courtesy of unmatched technical contents and lightweight, high-strength aluminium components. Advanced four-wheel-drive systems and a unique design mean the Wrangler is completely at ease and delivers a more modern experience, that stays true to the original, combined with more open-air freedom and advanced technology features in terms of safety and connectivity.

Available in a two or four-door design, the Rubicon is spacious and comfortable, no matter how adventurous the ride! The Rock-Trac four-wheel-drive system allows the most rugged and capable off-road driving. This system operates in four driving modes to take on all conditions: 2H (Two-Wheel Drive High Range), 4H AUTO (Full-Time Active On-Demand High Drive), 4H Part-Time (Part-Time Four-Wheel Drive High Range) and 4L (Four-Wheel Drive Low Range). The Wrangler features “shift on the fly” technology which allows for shifting between 2WD and 4WD High range at speeds of up to 72km/h. This allows the driver to switch to four-wheel drive mode when driving on slippery surfaces, such as sand or mud. To tackle the most challenging and demanding off-road tracks, drivers can use the 4WD Low mode with a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio that multiplies the engine torque. The Rubicon features additional off-road prowess and is equipped with the Rock-Trac 4×4 system, featuring a two-speed transfer case with 4.0:1 low-range gear ratio and front and rear heavy-duty next-generation Dana 44 axles and Tru-Lok electric front-and rear-axle lockers to tackle the most extreme off-road trails. As A first-timer I wasn’t brave enough to test out this mode however the handling, in general, was incredibly impressive!

The Rubicon models also offer added articulation and total suspension travel with help from an electronic sway-bar disconnect. This system allows drivers to disconnect the front sway bar to deliver additional wheel travel for traversing the toughest trails. They have an improved maximum crawl ratio of 77.2:1 which makes scaling any obstacle on the trail easy. The wheels on this vehicle are impressively large. Choose from sports standard 17” painted polished aluminium wheels with 32-inch BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain tyres or optional 17” aluminium wheels with a dedicated design and black polished finish.

Moving inside the Rubicon is both stylish and functional. The heritage-inspired centre stack features a clean, sculpted form that compliments the horizontal dashboard design and sports a finish dictated by the model choice. A hand-wrapped instrument panel features a soft-touch surface. Functional features, including climate and volume control knobs, Engine Stop Start (ESS) control and media charging and connectivity ports are all sculpted for quick recognition and are easily within reach of the front-seat occupants, so you’ll never be without your GPS or an all-important driving soundtrack!

The centre console has been completely restyled and houses the gear shift selection, transfer case and parking brake. Leather upholstered seats feature accent stitching, and now offer adjustable bolster and lumbar support. Available comfort options include heated front seats and steering wheel. The driver and front passenger vinyl-wrapped door trim panels are soft to the touch and feature lengthened armrests for better comfort.

Around the car, you’ll find a host of clever storage solutions including durable mesh pockets cup holders and numerous phone storage areas. The glove box can be locked to ensure security and an under-floor storage area behind the rear seat provides room to secure small items out of sight. One of Wrangler’s unique characteristics is the entirely washable interior and the protective rubber cover for the infotainment system screen, which allow easy clean ups in complete peace of mind. When you’re driving this car the only thing you’ll want to worry about is where your next adventure takes you!

Van Cleef & Arpels Celebrates the Holy Month With Two Collaborations

Van Cleef & Arpels shares a message of harmony through two artistic collaborations this Ramadan.

This Ramadan, Van Cleef & Arpels has collaborated with two visual artists to present artworks and installations inspired by the Holy Month. The first, a partnership with Middle Eastern calligraphist Wissam Shawkat sees the artist create a beautiful series of calligraphy artworks complementing the values of Ramadan.

Wissam Shawkat

This partnership has resulted in his artwork titled ‘Pearls Radiant Harmony’. The artworks are inspired by the perfectly spherical beads of Van Cleef & Arpel’s Perlée collection. Wissam Shawkat’s main artwork titled ‘Pearls Radiant Harmony’ is showcased in an illustrative technique while conveying the spirit of the season. Wissam creates movement using his unique calligraphy style – Al Wissam, to unify the three designs. Each artwork edition brings alive the message of positivity and unity, translating the very ethos of Ramadan and the joyous occasion of Eid Al Fitr to come.

The second partnership with French artist Arthur Hoffner sees the creative present his aesthetic interpretation through fascinating installations. Inspired again by the Van Cleef & Arpels Perlée collection, his creations showcase movement, unity and harmony mirroring the true values and spirit of the season of Ramadan.

Arthur Hoffner has imagined artistic installations representing the special relationship between day and night during Ramadan. These creations echo the playful nature of the Maison’s Perlée collection and will be seen across display windows, boutique interiors and exteriors and digital media during this period of harmony in the region.

Arthur Hoffner artwork

These imaginative installations represent a symbolic architecture, which is Arthur’s personal interpretation of an imaginary Middle Eastern city bringing harmony between daylight and night. Symbolic touches like arches celebrate the connection to spheres and geometrical elements as well as the culture and landscape of the region. The geometrical aspect of the bead from the Perlée collection and Ramadan were the two main drivers of the creative process which also brings to life the values of unity, harmony, and post-sunset reunions during this special period.

Selma Benomar Presents Her Latest Collection For Ramadan 2021

Moroccan-French designer Selma Benomar has become a go-to in the region for elegant feminine kaftan dresses. Her unique style is inspired by her heritage and the history of the traditional kaftan but adds contemporary elements which bring this classic piece into the 21st century and make them appealing to today’s woman.

Crafted from luxurious materials in Paris and Milan Selma has worked hard to establish her brand in the region over the last nine years and has become the well-known in the region for her classic evening wear with a modern twist.

Born in the city of imperial past, Meknes in Morocco, Selma Benomar was exposed to garment making from a young age thanks to her family of artists and kaftan couturiers. Inspired by their work, she wanted to embark on her own design journey, combining the traditional designs of her childhood with modern Parisian aesthetics that would appeal to a wider range of women. The designer’s handcrafted gowns are produced at home in Morocco, where Berber, Arabian and European cultures collide to become one, while her flagship boutique in Dubai has become a go-to for many Arab celebrities and prominent women. From strong silhouettes and delicate embellishments to the finest, handpicked fabrics, Selma Benomar’s designs tastefully merge the rich Arab heritage with European modernity.

A vibrant colour palette evokes joy and hope while the intricate embroidery highlights traditional craftsmanship making a statement of style and heritage for the Holy month. As Selma prepares to launch her latest collection we discover more about her passion for tradition and the secrets to creating an established brand in the region.

Tell us about your Spring/Summer 2021 collection.

“The Smiles of Nature” is the name I chose for my latest SS21 collection. It is a tribute to colours, inspired by the saying “colours are the smiles of nature”. I believe that colours are a magnificent gift for our senses and I wanted to create a collection that calls out the happiness in the soul and brings joy to the little things in life that keep us grounded.

Tell us about the choice of colours and fabrics.

Before selecting the colours to include in this collection, I enjoyed doing a deep search into the meaning of each colour and its impact on the human soul and then selected the ones that aligned with the message I wanted to spread with the collection. Bright colours like orange for example bring people out of their shell and can help them adapt to change. Colours like green help to balance yourself with others almost as nature does. Red works as a source of energy that attracts and invigorates others, while pink stands as a colour of kindness and love. Yellow offers a vibration of joy and happiness with mental clarity. Regarding the fabrics, I wanted them to be as simple, noble and neutral as possible to blend with the powerful colour theme.

Who is the woman you designed this collection for?

This collection is dedicated to audacious women with diverse personalities. Women who strive for an ideal coexistence between modernity and tradition.

How does your heritage inspire your designs?

I am lucky and privileged to come from Morocco; a country with an incredibly rich history. I was born and raised in Meknes; known as the land of traditions; the city is an open-air museum. I am extremely attached to the artisanal craftsmanship and know-how that I inherited and I’m always keen to incorporate and beautifully tie that together with the modern trends I was exposed to during the years I lived in France.

How do you go about designing a collection for Ramadan?

Ramadan is a blessed month. It is the month of patience, sacrifice and forgiveness. A month where we all unite in fasting, feasting, worship and sharing the joy and happiness of gathering with family and friends. I always design a specific collection for Ramadan and Eid. I make sure I have simple and comfortable casual designs for day wear and more dressy looks for Eid celebrations and gatherings.

You are well established in the UAE fashion industry now but what is something you would like to change about the industry moving forward?

As an established yet small-to-medium business, I have always prioritised quality over quantity and never skipped on the exquisite handmade workmanship when producing my collections. Until 2019, the fashion industry was quite frustrating, and unless you had strong confidence in your own vision and standards, you could easily feel you’re not doing enough or that you will get left behind. Fashion houses used to create eight collections a year. The result was a crowded fashion scene, with items showing up in stores months before customers were ready to wear them; summer collections in February and winter collections in August for example. I think the best change I have ever wished for is actually happening now as a result of the pandemic. While it is an unfortunate circumstance, in my opinion, the industry is going through a makeover and will not be what it used to be moving forward.

What advice would you give to aspiring designers in the region?

Commitment is the key to long-lasting success. The result of your hard work will come in the long term but you must put your heart into everything you do and never give up.

Who or what is your biggest source of inspiration?

Travelling and nature are my biggest sources of inspiration. Visiting a new place can have a great power to forge new perceptions and fresh ideas.

How do you think your designs help women to feel empowered?

It’s not about the dress or the design itself, it is about the passion and the path you create. Through my design journey, I spread the message that there is no limit to what you can learn, achieve and create.

What is your biggest achievement so far?

Firstly it would be the way I have exported part of my country’s tradition to the Arab world and kept it alive by adapting it to the modern world. I can say that I am proud to have unflinchingly proven that the Moroccan kaftan is the true epitome of elegance. No longer is it a traditional garment restricted to the home or a few occasions, it’s a piece that belongs to red carpet events and lavish ceremonies.

What is something you would still like to achieve with the brand that you haven’t done yet?

The list is long. I always set targets and goals. Sustaining success is harder than becoming successful and you maintain it by always setting higher and harder targets.

What is the biggest challenge you face today?

As it has for everyone today, the global pandemic has caused significant social and economic consequences. It is a great challenge and you have to be a solid structure to face it.

What is a lesson you have learnt from this past year?

Our most precious treasure is our health. Everything else can be replaced.

What is the professional motto that you live by?

Discipline will take you to places where motivation can’t.

Who is a woman you would love to design a dress for?

Arab women are my inspiration for each collection I make so wish I to dress each and every one of them.

What do you love about creating made to measure pieces Vs. ready-to-wear gowns?

I love the personalised experience I offer to my clientele. We make each design with the customer in our minds to ensure that it fits perfectly and we have the flexibility to adjust it to meet the clients most desired wishes. It’s all about the experience.

What is a message you would like to send to your clients in the UAE?

I am grateful for the love and support I am receiving from all my customers around the world, and I am specifically thankful for the UAE customers who have helped and supported the establishment of my brand over the first years. Thank you to the UAE and thank you Dubai.

Rami Al Ali On His Spring/Summer 2021 Haute Couture Collection

When he presented his Spring/Summer 2021 Haute Couture collection earlier this year, Rami Al Ali decided to pay tribute to his home country of Syria.

More specifically the city of Damascus, whose warm summer evenings became a great source of inspiration for his latest Haute Couture offering. In fact, it seems, his home country is inspiring the Dubai-based designer more than ever, during a year where we have all come to appreciate home and family a little more. Last year Al Ali set up a new platform; “Ard Dyar” which fosters and nurtures successful Syrian creatives in the UAE by bringing them together to share knowledge and learn from each other.

While the pace may have slowed since the global pandemic began, Al Ali has had a busy year launching Rami Al Ali White, a line of bridal gowns, as well as his Fall 2021 Pret-a-Porter collection which bridges the gap between ready-to-wear and Haute Couture. His Spring Summer Haute Couture collection was presented virtually as part of Paris Fashion Week this January. A total of eighteen looks were beautifully aligned to illustrate Al Ali’s vision for the season, evoking the magical allure of evenings in Damascus. “I’m not quite sure if it’s a fantasy orchestrated by my imagination or an echo of an old childhood memory, but it always comes back to me so strong, so real, so vivid and very nostalgic.” Rami Al Ali recounts. “A Damascene evening, to me, consists of a cool breeze wafting with a sweet Jasmine aroma. Calming whispers behind the rosewood mashrabias, muddled with the gurgle of the courtyard fountain and the shadows created by the full moon, like a serene sanctuary – so soulful and peaceful.” We find out more about the recent collection and the upcoming plans for the year.

This past year has been a strange one for all – what has been your experience and what is something you will take away or a lesson you have learnt?

I feel that it has forced people to slow down and reassess. I think it’s a healthy reset. Every industry, including the fashion industry, needs to slow down every now and then to get back on the right track. I think there was an oversupply of products on the market, which outbalanced the real demand. Now brands are producing more consciously and really focusing on what they want to put out there.

You recently presented the Spring/Summer 21 Haute Couture collection, tell us about the process of creating the collection.

Now more than ever, I feel the need to connect to my roots and preserve my identity – to tell the story with a sense of hope and love. The desire to connect to my heritage steered my design process in a direction that would allow me to share it with the world. Syria has and will always be, part of my creative persona, my real voice, what grounds me and gives stability. It is always a source of inspiration – the architecture, the nature, the craftsmanship, the people – it has appeared in several collections through the history of the house. It is my eternal muse. This season I took inspiration from a magical evening in DamascusIt’s mystical, seductive and very alluring. There is intimacy and a sense of familiarity and warmth. This is echoed through the choice of fabrics, colours and craftsmanship.

The strong silhouettes and structures in the pieces are very interesting – are there any new techniques you introduced this season?

It’s a technique we keep on developing and have done for the past few seasons. We wanted to create volume and structure without having the weight usually associated with it. It was very challenging, but it gave us a strong visual identity.

What is the message you want to share with this collection?

I want to share my heritage while also empowering the women who chose to wear my designs. There are certain characteristics of a woman that have long inspired the brand and have influenced my collections each season. This season it is no different. I wanted to embody her with every design. She is confident and elegant with an unapologetic air of glamour – she is both modern and timeless.

Tell us a little about the virtual presentation and the story behind it.

Every designer is a movie director. Each time we start a collection, we have a script, set design and lighting – when combined they create a universe that captures the theme of the collection. So the new virtual shows have brought this talent to the surface and made it more of a reality. It brings another element and dimension to the collection.

Of course, the physical shows in Paris did not take place this year – how have you felt the differences in the process and how have you been able to keep in touch with your clients?

It was a new experience and offered a unique element that had not been explored by the House before. It expanded our reach and allowed for more people to see and experience the collection. In saying that, I don’t believe it will replace physical shows in the long term. Haute Couture specifically, is about craftsmanship and that needs to be felt, touched and seen in person. It’s not just drama and creativity that can be shown digitally – this is just one element.

We just saw the Pret-a-Porter collection for Fall 2021 – tell us a little about that and how does designing this collection differ from your Haute Couture collections?

The design process for Couture and Pret are much the same. It begins with inspiration and developing that through research and design exploration. The main difference between the two collections is the wearability of the designs and the level of craftsmanship that goes into each piece. We categorise our Pret collections as demi-couture, which includes couture details that are synonyms with the house, however, the handwork is not of the same magnitude as our couture collections.

We also saw the beautiful Rami Al Ali White collection launch last year – what has been the feedback of that collection so far?

I’m grateful that the feedback on this new collection has been a positive one. We have introduced the collection to our eCommerce site and it’s doing very well.

What do you love about designing bridal gowns for a woman’s special day and do you feel a lot of pressure to get it right?

Yes, it’s a big moment and one that will create a memory that will last a lifetime. Each bride is beautifully unique in her own way, so designing a dress that speaks to her is something that I take pride in creating.

Looking forward to the rest of the year, what will 2021 bring for Rami Al Ali?

This year forced us to tweak our previous plans and expedite some. We launched our eCommerce site, which is an amazing direct connection to our clients. We also launched WHITE, our demi-couture line that caters to unique and special occasions and we just launched our new Pret-a-Porter collection. We are currently working on launching our annual couture bridal collection later in the year and have many other exciting projects in the pipeline so watch this space!

What is something you would like to achieve this year?

Hopefully stability and subtle growth without affecting our DNA and identity.

In this issue we are discussing the month of Ramadan – what does this month mean to you and how will you be spending it this year?

The Holy Month for me is a time of reflection and a time to connect with friends and family.

What can you tell us about sustainability at Rami Al Ali?

We are very conscious about production and the effects of over-production on the environment. Everything is made to measure so we produce garments only once an order is confirmed to reduce unnecessary landfill waste associated with mass production.

Outside of your fashion line, we have seen your recent Ard Dyar events – tell us a little about that concept and how it’s working?

Ard Dyar is a series of intimate dinners designed to celebrate and highlight Syrian talent in the region. This concept is to encourage open conversations with well-established Syrian figures about their career success. The vision is to grow the community in order to build a foundation of industry professionals who can assist with the development, success and opportunities needed to cultivate emerging Syrian talent.

How would you like to see creative talents supported and nurtured in the region?

I want to create more opportunities that might not have otherwise presented themselves. It’s about building a network of likeminded professionals who can mentor, grow and cultivate.
