In a new generation of regional designers, Dubai-based designer Maha Ahmad is carving a distinctive path shaped by individuality and quiet confidence. As the founder of Autonomie, Cairo-born Ahmad has created a label that reflects a modern approach to dressing, embracing femininity while maintaining a sense of structure and purpose. Rooted in refined minimalism and thoughtful design, the brand speaks to women who value pieces that feel both expressive and enduring.

Founded on a deeply personal vision, Autonomie is built around the idea of self-definition. Ahmad’s creative approach prioritises authenticity over trends, resulting in collections that balance dreamy silhouettes with an edgy sensibility. The brand’s aesthetic moves seamlessly between occasion wear and contemporary wardrobe staples, offering versatile pieces designed to empower women in their everyday lives and in special moments.
Since launching, Autonomie has steadily built a loyal following, with clients drawn to its understated elegance and modern femininity. Each collection reflects Ahmad’s commitment to craftsmanship, experimentation and evolving creativity, while remaining grounded in a consistent design language. From fabric manipulation and embroidery to carefully considered silhouettes, her work reflects a designer constantly exploring new ideas while maintaining a clear brand identity.
Today, Autonomie continues to grow, reaching new audiences through platforms such as Ounass, its e-commerce store and private showroom appointments. As Ahmad looks to the future, her vision remains rooted in expanding the brand while staying true to the independence and creativity that first inspired its launch.

What inspired you to launch Autonomie, and what does the name represent?
I have always had a passion for art and fashion. I studied it, then worked in the industry for a while before moving into design. I always thought if you have to put in the work, the hours and the discipline, you might as well do it for yourself and your own dream. And that’s how Autonomie was born. The name reminds me of myself. I have always been independent, even as a kid. I started the brand alone, of course; some people joined along the way, but I think it’s a reminder that it’s about my voice, my vision.
How would you describe the DNA of Autonomie in three words?
Dreamy, feminine and edgy.

Your designs feel both structured and effortless. How do you strike that balance?
I always consider the big picture when I’m working. So, working on the collection as a whole, creating a balance and making sure that there’s something for everyone.
How do your clients influence your creative process?
We work closely with all our clients. We speak to them regularly; we hear their feedback. We try to find out what makes them feel good and confident, and that definitely helps us make informed decisions and even influence upcoming collections.

Can you walk us through your design process, from concept to final piece?
Every collection starts with an idea, a concept or a feeling I want to communicate. And then I think about how I can translate this idea visually. Next, the visual research begins, and then, I start designing. It’s like a puzzle where slowly, slowly, the final piece and or the whole collection comes together. It takes a lot of editing, adding and eliminating until we get to the finished product.
How do you approach creating pieces that feel timeless yet relevant to today’s trends?
I think trends come and go quickly, so it’s a slippery slope to follow them, especially with evening and occasional wear, because these pieces should last. So rather than following trends, I follow inspiration and let it guide me, and I always think about what I would want to wear as a consumer myself.

What challenges did you face when building Autonomie, and how did you overcome them?
Autonomi has been a journey for me. A lot of mistakes, lessons and milestones were made and reached along the way. There’s no secret recipe; you just have to keep going and push through.
Are there particular materials or techniques you gravitate towards, and why?
I like to experiment, so season after season, you’ll see new materials and techniques that we add to the collections. From embroidery to fabric manipulations. For me, it’s a journey of self-discovery and, for the client, a way to understand what they like. So we try to constantly explore new things while also keeping our staples and classic techniques.

How do you see Autonomie evolving in the next few years?
I think it’s just the beginning for us. I see it going bigger, reaching more people while always staying true to our DNA and voice.
What advice would you give to emerging designers looking to start their own label?
I would say don’t be too harsh on yourselves. Great things take time. No one has all the answers; we are all trying to figure it out. So, buckle up and enjoy the ride!
