It’s been 15 years since The Rug Company and Paul Smith first joined forces. To mark this long collaboration, the duo have designed a new collection of hand-knotted Tibetan wool rugs and cushions. It’s a modern collection that pushes boundaries into a fresh direction of muted palettes and unregulated patter composition, while retaining the spirit of his distinctive design tradition. Each rug has been woven entirely by hand using the finest natural yarns and age-honoured weaving techniques for which The Rug Company is renowned.
The collection, comprising six rugs and a cushion, is an exciting collision of geometry and colour. Split Light rug is inspired by triangular glass prisms that break light up to create layers of angular transparent shapes. This soft and neutral palette creates a soothing and calm pattern, while the desaturated palette of Split Bright injects a shot of understated colour.
Paint Stripe rug was inspired by mid-century modern abstract art, a style of action painting referred to as drip painting. The rug represents a canvas with expressive drips of colour creating a wonderful broken stripe effect.
The collection also includes two runners, which will be available in two sizes. Refraction Bright is composed of regimented stripes broken into bright refractions of light in a playful colour palette. Refraction Light is an exploration of colour and form; abstracted soft shades of neutral colour break away from traditional ordered composition. The geometric shapes collide creating an angular pattern that is modern but will work in any interior environment.
Arrows rug has a geometric theme, using a neutral colour palette and raised silk pile to soften the angular lines of the motif. The Zig Zag cushion is also part of the theme, it has a bright geometric pattern where the multi-stripe line is twisted from right to left to create a perfect zig zag pattern.
The new Paul Smith collection will be available at the new The Rug Company showroom in Al Serkal Avenue, Dubai from mid November 2015.
