Most people in their 20s are blessed with naturally healthy skin, there are however some things you can do to preserve and enhance the skin’s natural vibrancy.
Skincare Routine
This is the time to establish a basic skincare routine including cleansing, moisturising, and using sunscreen daily to prevent premature ageing.
Eye care
Again, like a basic skincare routine, this is the best age to start using a gentle eye cream to prevent early signs of fine lines and puffiness.
Overall health
There are plenty of other skin care tips that are relevant at all ages, that you can start implementing now (see the “Skincare for all ages” section below).
Skincare in your 30s
Even if you skipped on skincare in your 20s, have no fear – there is still time to improve and rejuvenate your skin during your 30s.
Focus on antioxidants
Integrate products with antioxidants like Vitamin C to combat free radical damage and promote collagen production.
Retinol is key
Consider introducing retinol into your skincare routine to address fine lines and uneven skin tone.
Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate
Exfoliate regularly to encourage cell turnover and maintain skin radiance.
Night cream and a peptide eye cream
Start using a nourishing night cream to provide extra hydration and repair. Look for creams which use Vitamin C and resveratrol. In terms of eye cream, invest in an eye cream with peptides to target more advanced signs of ageing.
Skincare in your 40s
Expand your products and start to focus on your neck and decolletage too as you enter your 40s.
Change up your creams and serums
This is the time that you want to focus on deep hydration and moisture retention, look out for products (specifically creams and serums) which promise to provide richer hydration. Use serums containing hyaluronic acid and peptides to boost collagen and plump the skin.
Neck and décolletage care
In your 40s you will also want to extend your skincare routine to include the neck and chest area. Shop around for products which specifically target these areas, as they can need different care than the face or body.
Experiment with different facial oils
Facial oils are a great way to lock in moisture and help to nourish and restore your skin’s natural barrier.
Skincare in your 50s
Gentle skincare
This is the age where you really want to begin to use products that are less harsh, such as a gentle cleanser to avoid stripping the skin of natural oils.
Lift and firm
Look for skincare products with ingredients like peptides and retinoids for firming and lifting effects.
Regular Facials
Consider regular facials or treatments that target specific ageing concerns.
Rich Moisturisers
Opt for richer, more emollient moisturizers to combat dryness and sagging.
Be vigilant about skin cancer
In your 50s and beyond, the chance of developing skin cancer begins to increase. Be sure to regularly check your skin for any unusual growths or changes, and immediately contact a doctor if you have any concerns.
Skincare in your 60s and beyond
At this age, it’s important to protect your skin as becomes significantly drier and potentially more sensitive.
Focus on products for dry skin
In your 60s and beyond your skin will start to become dry far more easily. Use gentle products, warm (not hot water), and a soft cloth for your face and be sure you apply a gentle, creamy moisturiser within the first few minutes of bathing or taking a shower.
Use a humidifier
Both air conditioning and heating can cause the air to become a lot more dry, which impacts the skin. To combat the effects, use a humidifier in your home or workplace.
Wear gloves while doing housework and gardening
As the skin is a lot more sensitive, take preventative steps, such as wearing gloves when doing tasks which could impact the skin, such as washing up, housework or gardening.
Skincare for all ages
These universal tips are good for all ages to improve your skin, whether you’re 21 or 85.
Nurture your skin from the inside
At any age, it’s important to focus on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins for healthy skin and hair. Also, make sure to drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated and glowing, and prioritize overall health through exercise, getting enough sleep and stress reduction.
Sun Protection
Regardless of your age, it’s never too late to start benefiting from sun cream. Start using sunscreen regularly to prevent sun damage and maintain healthy skin.
Remove Makeup
It (probably) goes without saying – no matter how tempting it is not to, always remove makeup before bed to prevent clogged pores and breakouts.
Consult Professionals
If you’re considering more advanced treatments or have questions regarding your skincare routine, be sure to consult a dermatologist or a skincare professional.
