Milan Fashion Week Day Three

Milan Fashion Week Day Three marked many iconic moments for this month of shows so far.

Paul Surridge debuted his first ever womenswear collection at Roberto Cavalli which received positive nods from the front row, Etro presented bourgeois bohème designs which will hit the stores in time for the brands 50th anniversary, while Versace’s tribute to Gianni Versace was the standout moment of the week so far with Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Carla Bruni and Helena Christensen closing the show.

We are lining up to get our hands on one of Marco de Vincenzo’s souvenir T-shirts with their crystal-beaded seams and lace backs. We will probably layer them under one the pretty slip dresses.

For laid back cool look no further than For Restless Sleepers. Experts in glamorous lounge wear, the collection will fit into our Middle East wardrobe nicely with bold prints elongated robes.

Vilshenko took us back to melancholy mood of Russia. Inspired by a 18th century tablecloth picked up in St. Petersburg, the sentimental mood translated into dainty floral embroidery, feminine dresses and loose silhouettes.

There was a lot of love at Aigner show with the set and accessories decorated in lipstick kisses and hearts in vibrant pinks and reds. This is definitely one of the most fun collections from the brand with many show goers snapping the satin bow wedge shoes.

Milan Fashion Week: Bottega Veneta SS18

Bottega Veneta SS18 filled us with simple optimism on a sunny Saturday morning in Milan.

The colours, clean silhouettes and mix of shapes make for a reliable summer uniform – something that is easy yet beautifully made.

Inspired by delicate rose and ocean blue colours of the Marble Room in Kedleston Hall, a grand Palladian-style country house by British architect Robert Adam, the hues felt balanced and feminine. The neutral rain jackets would be ideal for battling April showers while boho fringe dress might make an appearance at Coachella. But don’t be fooled, this Veneta girl has some edge.

Simple pieces were lifted with embellishment like studded jewels, mirror and metal eyelets along with exotic skins used in applique and trim. The seventies fringing of tiny glass beads modeled on Gigi Hadid, Emily Ratajkwoski and Hailey Baldwin felt fresh and elegant and the one pieces modeled by Sara Sampaio and Kendall Jenner stood out for their geometric print and couture-level detail.

The champion pieces? We see the red short-sleeved coat with gold studding worn by Adwoa Aboah and Wing-Tip City Knot bags selling out as soon as they hit the shop floor – if not beforehand.

A Fresh New Approach At Roberto Cavalli

Milan Fashion Week: Roberto Cavalli SS18

A post shared by FASHION TO MAX official (@fashiontomax) on Sep 22, 2017 at 7:15am PDT

The much anticipated Roberto Cavalli SS18 collection was contemporary and feminine without an extreme print clash in sight.

When you think Cavalli it’s animal print, flesh-baring pieces along with flamboyant fabrics that come to mind, but that was under adventurous direction of Peter Dundas. With Paul Surridge at the helm and his background in menswear, taking on womenswear for the first time meant leading the house towards a modern vision of what a Cavalli woman is today.

The key was not to objectifying but breathing fresh air into what sensuality and physical power is. Yes, there was zebra print but it was reworked across clean silhouettes and sharp cuts, while the beaded evening pieces felt functional and wearable.

It wasn’t so much a departure from the Roberto Cavalli’s flair but a step towards really understanding the needs of a modern woman and make it cooler for many rather than just one. We anticipate a bright future ahead look forward to seeing more.

Milan Fashion Week: Giorgio Armani SS18

Balanced symmetries create a sense of harmony in the latest #GiorgioArmani #SS18 Women’s collection. #ArmaniLive #MFW – ph: @scarmatt

A post shared by Giorgio Armani (@giorgioarmani) on Sep 22, 2017 at 2:40am PDT

There was plenty of modern elegance at Giorgio Armani SS18 show. It is something that the brand is praised for, but this time round there was an added artistic flair.

Freedom of expression presented itself with models sporting pixie hair cuts wearing tailored jackets decorated in colourful graphic lines, soft pastel hues were mixed with bold black accessories and there were vivid splashes of contrasting prints.

You can rely on Giorgio Armani for beautifully cut shapes that move with every step resulting in a fluid and flattering fit. Key pieces to note are dresses with sloping hemlines, weightless dustier, luminous pleated skirts and statement clutch bags.

The collection was grown up but with elements of  youthful innocence, the kind of feeling you get every summer when you travel to a new destination not knowing what’s round the corner. It’s the element of surprise with a hint of something familiar that keeps the clients coming back to Giorgio Armani season after season.

Milan Fashion Week SS18: Prada

As you enter the Prada show space you straight away notice the pop art decorating the walls. Some had comic book quotes with one reading ‘what’ll I wear? I don’t wanna look too femme I don’t wanna look too butch.’ Can you already sense a theme?

Muccia has fun with fashion and for SS18 it’s all about youthful spirit of rock n roll meet a comic book story. The soundtrack mixed between heavy guitar to gentle vocals of Sinead O’Conner’s Nothing Compares To You translated into the collection – a balance of hard and soft.

The sharply cut jackets had a masculine feel and decorated with strong feminine touches like studding, beading and patchwork. There was plenty of print clashing and powerful colours mixed with bold silhouettes such as animal printed skater skirts and jackets as well as red polka dot coat.

She also played with textures such as PVC, velvet, soft leather, jacquard and satin – glamorous grunge indeed. As for accessories, statement kitten heels, masculine brogues, pop art printed bowling bags and exotic leather totes made their way down the vast runway.

Prada worked with eight visionary artists, spanning the generational spectrum, each of whom has illustrated women in a uniquely empowering way — Brigid Elva, Joëlle Jones, Stellar Leuna, Giuliana Maldini, Natsume Ono, Emma Ríos, Trina Robbins and Fiona Staples — and with the archive of Tarpé Mills, creator of the first female action hero.

There was an element of undone edgy elegance, a collection created for a powerful woman, a modern day superhero.

Milan Fashion Week: Moschino SS18

Biker jackets, Little Pony prints and tulle tutus ruled the runway at Moschino SS18 show, but it’s the floral finale that had the viewers talking.

The King of quirky and flamboyant, Jeremy Scott is the designer you turn to when you need cheering up and his clothes never cease to put a smile on people’s faces.

Kaia Gerber opened the show looking like an eighties biker princess sporting fishnets with a mini leather cap and hardware jewellery. The punk theme dominated the first part of the show but it is the last few looks that really made us sit up and watch.

Gigi Hadid appeared on the runway blooming like a bunch of the most fashionable flowers with ribbons and all. Gerber had flowers blossoming from her boots, Joan Smalls walked in a skirt made out of red roses, while others models appeared in a floral shaped gowns – red carpet worthy?

Sure, it will be the Little Pony T-shirts, dresses or knits that will sell out, but we love Scott’s flair and would happily have his bunch of extraordinary blooms decorating our wardrobes.

Milan Fashion Week: Gucci SS18

“I’m trying to translate fashion in a playground that is more about the contemporary population,” #AlessandroMichele. A women’s embroidered tracksuit with embroideries and crystal details inspired by a vintage 80s style, by #AlessandroMichele for the #GucciSS18 fashion. #mfw

A post shared by Gucci (@gucci) on Sep 20, 2017 at 7:37am PDT

Alessandro Michele doesn’t believe in boundaries and for the Gucci SS18 collection he pushed his creative flair even further with a mash up of era’s and textures.

Backstage he said: “I know I work in a more cinematic way, the clothes help me tell the story, together with faces, the stage, the light and the music.”

The Gucci Hub set presented diverse journeys with a map featuring Roman poet Orazio’s country home. The runway is Tiber river; while the map is juxtaposed with the layout of the Imperial Fora, dotted with classical statues from different periods and cultures. The runway featured three arches in Indian, Aztec and Egyptian styles and the surface was bubbled PVC with streetlights giving a metropolitan feel.

Basically Gucci is inspired by all and is made for all with no discrimination of who a Gucci person is. There were seventies prints and bold-shouldered eighties blazers accessorised with cross body bags and chunky jewellery. We also spotted jumpers with Looney Tunes Bugs Bunny and plenty of jackets layered over sheer tops and trousers. Show goers eyes darted from floral print mixed with leopard to the Gucci logo decorating clothing and accessories.

Despite the fast-paced dance track and models racing down the runway to harsh strobe-lighting, the collection notes encourage you to slow down and ‘resist the mantra of speed that violently lead to loosing oneself. Resist the illusion of something new at any cost.’

Gucci has become a brand for collectors, those who don’t follow trends but want to invest in something beautiful that lasts. Perhaps that’s the reason why season after season there isn’t a great distinction in the vision with pieces presenting their own narrative, that ask you to linger on the detail.

Michele sees his work as an ‘invitation to be yourself: the only true transgression that ensures us to get close to to happiness’ and we know for a fact that the embroidered tracksuit jacket will make us very happy indeed.

This resulted in two models combining noble and high-tech materials while ensuring top-rate performance. They used multi-layered carbon and C-SMC carbon based on the same technology as that is applied in Lamborghini cars, which has never been done before.

Sounds pretty straight forward so far, but how do you marry the materials with a sporting and sophisticated look while also maintaining a sense of luxury? Roger Dubuis engineers and designers created a charismatic power control display forming a central signature in the middle of the watch – just like in a sports car.

“Combining our in-house talents to deliver exceptional timepieces and unique experiential value naturally implies shifting into high gear, our favourite mode of operation,” said Roger Dubuis CEO Jean-Marc Pontroué.

The Excalibur Aventador S is available in two interpretations epitomising the “Dare to be rare” concept through respective 88- and 8-piece limited editions. The former bears the Lamborghini Giallo Orion yellow paint code, while the even more exclusive series comes in Arancio Argos.

Chief Executive Officer of Automobili Lamborghini added “Lamborghini Squadra Corse is constantly evolving as a trend setter in the race segment. Always respecting these traditions, we aim to impress and thrill our customers and fans of the brand all over the world.”

What’s next for this blossoming collaboration? From spring 2018 onwards, you’ll spot Roger Dubuis on-track presence as one of the main sponsors of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo: the legendary Lamborghini one-make series.

The ability to produce something extraordinary and desirable has never been a problem for Roger Dubuis and Lamborghini, and this latest venture will hold a proud place in anyone’s watch collection.

Focusing on 17th and 18th century ceramic works and antiquities, this will be the fourth presentation from the Dubai based artist titled The Portuguese Collection, a retrospective on Portuguese history through modern travels.

The painting were inspired by the artists second home, Lisbon, where religious and public buildings don elaborate tile work and interiors decorated with 17th century Pombal tiles. The series, which took close to three years to complete, present a personal, contemporary interpretation, bringing in various animal scenes and renewing the original pattern work.

Fashion and art have often crossed path so Toledo is also extending her creativity further into signature silk scarves.

Emerging SS18 Trends From London Fashion Week

With Tommy Hilfiger closing London Fashion Week in an extravagant Rock ‘n’ Roll manner with Gigi and Bella Hadid in hand, we round up the emerging SS18 trends to know.

Shine Bright
Need some inspiration for the party season? Look to Topshop, Temperley, Emporio Armani, Molly Goddard and Christopher Kane for some of the most dazzling pieces spotted on the runway. We were particularly taken with the final segment of Kane’s show featuring evening dresses covered in crystals and cage-like structures.

White Out
Head to toe whiter than white outfits were spotted at Simone Rocha, J.W Anderson, Preen by Thornton Bregazzi and Emilia Wickstead. The trick is to play with shapes and textures with Simone Rocha leading the styling game with a balanced mix of tulle, silk, satin and lace.

London Fashion Week SS18: Emilia Wickstead

Emilia Wickstead ss18 lfw

Emilia Wickstead wanted to create the clothes that really move and for SS18 she presented a collection that had essence of happiness and self expression.

Similar to Erdem, she was inspired by the famous Jazz hangout the Cotton Club as well as the Savoy and Harlem Renaissance where people embraced the music and moved to every beat.

The clothes had structure yet came with a loose fit. She opened with sheer oversized dresses and shirts that went into more feminine silhouettes that still hanged loosely round the shoulders and hips.

There were balloon sleeves and skirts that she is known for along with neatly tailored trousers and jackets.

For the evening choose between a straight line maxi dress in scarlet red with neat pink bows, or a sequin gown complete with matching shimmering bag and dancing shoes.

Who In London Is Making News On The Runway

London Fashion Week SS18: Erdem

Erdem let us into his fantasy where a royal Debutante enters the glamorous world of the New York Jazz scene.

He transported us back to the 1950’s where the dresses were modest but beautifully fitted and ladies hair was smoothed into a neat ponytail and secured with a ribbon.

Looking at the mood board backstage, you’d spot famous photos of the young Queen Elizabeth II, not long after her glittering Coronation, along with ladies at the New York iconic spot The Cotton Club. Queen meets jazz.

This was dressing at its prettiest with Duchess’ gowns and soft, floating tea frocks decorated in his signature decadent brocade.

Earrings looked liked a mash of trinkets you’d find in your grandmother’s attic with pearls and floral gems brought together in a modern design. Shoes, flat or with a medium heel,  were covered in printed curtain fabric with embellishment and lace.

We imagine it was hard for the attendees to step out of Erdem’s imagination into the real world.

Over at Versus Versace, Donatella presented a collection for those ‘who dare to express themselves’. First part saw plenty of check-print pieces which was followed on by western inspiration (note the fringed, lucite-heeled cowgirl boots) and then some party dresses. Makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury created a bold makeup look inspired by Amy Winehouse’ iconic punky, graphic, overdrawn feline flick – as well as Kate Moss’ signature eye.

London Fashion Week SS18: Emporio Armani

It seems like iconic designers don’t mind making their audience venture beyond the central locations of fashion week and as with Ralph Lauren, Giorgio Aramani staged his SS18 Emporio Armani presentation off the beaten track.

Guests arrived in Wapping’s Tobaco Docks on Sunday evening for one of the most talked about events in London – it has been 11 years since Armani staged a show in the city after all.

The collection offered lots of different styles – suiting, sportswear, cocktail dresses and office attire with a dash of Armani eagle logos on plastic handbags and T-shirts, which will be a hit with the younger crowd.

The little chiffon dresses with frills and occasional crab print can go from day to night, especially if styled with a delicate jackets or slouchy red and white check blazers for a more laid back approach. Our eyes were on the elegant trousers that sat on the hips and had an equal mix of masculine and feminine tailoring.

Bright colours, joyful prints and delicate fabrics make it a playful collection you’d want to wear all summer long.

Do

Apart from the usual suspects, why not head down to Via Fiori Chiari, one of most known antique markets in town filled with rare books and other trinquets.

Visit navigli (the canals) for informal dining and browsing in antique shops or simply strolling by the water.

London Fashion Week Day One And Two

This is an exciting season for London Fashion Week with many new arrivals to the schedule such as Ralph & Russo along with Tommy Hilfiger as well launches and exhibitions.

Although it’s the shortest during the fashion month, it’s normally the one many editors and trend setters look to for what will be big next season. Praised for experimental designers who are not afraid to push the boundaries of style, there is a lot that LFW offers.

Both day one and two saw the return of some of London favourites such as Shrimps with another bright deliver of faux fur pieces including a floor length lime masterpiece. Eudon Choi played with prints like plaid and delivered strong oversized tailoring with the pink two-piece stealing the show. Ashley Williams played homage to the eighties with zebra print separates and tracks pant, but the day belonged to Ralph & Russo who debuted their first ready-to-wear collection.

It was a cosy start to day two with Mother of Pearl showcasing bags shaped like pillows, while J. W Anderson continued to delight the fashion crowd with everyone’s eyes on the perfect white dress for next summer.

It was another cheerful collection from Molly Goddard which is a nice break from some of the more tailored runway shows we’ve seen so far. The same feeling was found at Simone Rocha who is a master of mixing tulle, silk, satin and lace and making it into something elegant and wearable.

House of Holland didn’t disappoint with another flamboyant daring collection full of geometric patterns and a strong pirate motif. Once you push past the creative flair it’s easy to see which pieces you’d want to wear next summer such as the lightweight cotton voile skirts and dresses or the shimmering slides.

WATCH: Gigi Hadid Turns Jewellery Designer For Messika

Messika by Gigi Hadid

Gigi Hadid has collaborated with Messika on a contemporary jewellery collection.

Already one of the best known models in a world with a huge fan base and a number of ventures under her belt, this will be first jewellery collection that Gigi has worked on.

Founder Valerie Messika said “I loved working with Gigi. Her sense of detail and her discerning eye for fashion completely won me over. Her unparalleled professionalism and her involvement with the Maison throughout the development process deeply inspired me. Gigi is the embodiment of the Messika woman. She is spontaneous, sunny and bright.”

The Messika collection by Gigi Hadid adds rock and even punk accents to Move. The 12 designs are strong, clean cut  and modern and there are a couple of stand out high-jewellery options such as an ear cuff, a ring, a three-row long necklace and a choker – all with G motif.

The collaboration will not only land itself to those who appreciate fine jewellery craftsmanship, but also to a millennial shopper looking for a special piece.

London Fashion Week Fall 17: Burberry

It was a true celebration of British style for Burberry AW17 see-now-buy now collection.

Christopher Bailey has brought back the classic check print but in a modern way with caps that can be styled with anything, raincoats, high neck dresses and bags.

It was a step away from the feminine to the more edgy younger side of style with models such as Kaia Gerber and Adwoa Aboah stepping down the runway in oversized outerwear, preppy knits and masculine trousers.

But among the heritage print and boxy shearling jackets, there were touches of soft satin skirts, sheer maxi dresses, and delicate floral embroidery that provided the perfect antidote to the tougher pieces resulting in a wearable balanced collection.

As for accessories, bold earrings continue to make a statement this fashion month while the high heel sandals were paired with knit socks.

This is a take of modern femininity, something that has become a dominant theme throughout the shows so far. Now where can we get our hands on those check caps?
