Campbell Gray Living: Inside The Luxury Residences Newly Opened in Amman, Jordan

Heading to the Jordanian capital, we spent the evening full of adrenaline waiting for the big reveal. To celebrate the launch of Campbell Gray Living Amman – the award-winning luxury development in the new downtown district of Abdali – a one of a kind sculpture that encapsulates the spirit of the city was unveiled.

After a friendship was struck up between Campbell Gray Hotel’s Chairman Saad Audeh and Belgian-born, France-based artist Zivo, the two came to the conclusion that they must collaborate on a project to celebrate their joint love of art. Fast forward to early October of 2019, and the two stood side by side as they presented Reflection.

Reflection stands in the city of Amman

Reflection stands in the city of Amman

Using the windy climate of Jordan and the inhabitants of the country itself as inspiration, Zivo explored his fascination with gravity and created the tallest 3D printed sculpture in the world. Standing in the city’s new boutique retail space The Valley – something of a wind tunnel created by Campbell Gray’s office space and residences standing in parallel – the light-reflecting work of art shows three figures balancing on a semi-dome, rocking back and forth in the wind without ever being pulled to the ground by its force. The sculpture represents the strength and unity of the family unit throughout the turbulence and adversities of life in today’s ever-changing world.

The Valley has already cemented its place as the upcoming centre for Amman’s flourishing art scene, with a number of high-profile exhibitions and displays taking place at its gallery, The Corner. And this is only enhanced by the residences that have become the essential luxury destination in Amman – a work of art in itself. Here’s why….

Artistic Accommodation

Life in Campbell Gray Living is not only made as easy as possible but also as beautiful as can be. Designed by Martin Brudnizki Design Studio – the London-based award-winning studio – the seven floors’ worth of one, two and three-bedroom apartments boast thoughtfully laid out and expertly decorated living spaces suitable for all needs. While each apartment shares the same artistic flair, no two are exactly alike. However, what runs throughout are incredible views of the city below, well thought out colour schemes and clever compositions to economise space.

The kitchen of a one-bedroom apartment

Opt for a furnished offering, and prepare to be awestruck by the interior designs and creative consideration. The three-bedroom flat is a feast for eyes with a luxurious open-plan layout, a wrap-around balcony and spacious yet cosy bedroom dwellings. Each apartment is equally as slick as it is stylish, delivering colour pops and artistic touches in the right measure. Cast stone and rich hardwood oak is signature to the abodes – the build-in library being a particular favourite feature – creating an at-nature feel, while the state of the art appliances and smart technology installed throughout assure that modernity is still at the heart of the home.

Lounge of a three-bedroom apartment

Every inch of design is a modern take on five-star luxury and offers a homely yet polished living space for those jetting in and out of the city who are tired of moving from hotel to hotel, and those looking to settle more permanently with ease into an inviting new build.

Unbeatable Facilities

Rooftop pool and bar area

Complimenting Campbell Gray Living Amman’s urban-slick interiors are the wide-ranging facilities, making for hotel-like living without the constant uprooting. Take for instance the rooftop pool area and bar, Las Cabañas, that boasts an infinity pool overlooking the city as well as secluded seating areas (complete with a hot tub) that can be enjoyed privately or booked out when hosting guests. A restaurant, Hanger, also sits on the ground floor of the building too, so good food is never in short supply.

Private hot tub and lounge space in the rooftop area

Residential offerings include daily cleaning, dry cleaning, à la carte services as well as concierge, postal and courier services, and each resident has access to the triple-play fibre optic service and 24-hour central hot water supply. There is even a residents member club to enjoy, too.

Thriving Location

Of course, the location choice is no accident. In the heart of Amman, Campbell Gray Living is a bridge between the modern and ancient aspects of the city. While views of the old city can be enjoyed from the pool and the balconies, the newly built boulevard in the town centre is a short walk away. The walking spot boasts a long promenade with everything from shops, cafes, restaurants and hotels to fitness facilities and entertainment outlets.

And soon, Campbell Gray’s hotel will open in the capital too, just moments away from the residential building, with many of the hotel facilities being open to the property owners. Not to mention the offices that sit opposite, with the sensational Reflections sculpture standing strong against the winds between the two.

Five Reasons To Visit The Newly Opened W Muscat, Oman

With the new addition to the W Hotels group opening in Oman’s capital earlier this Autumn, it’s the perfect excuse to finally make that visit over to Muscat and explore the culturally rich city while unwinding in the glorious hotel.

A neighbour for UAE dwellers, there’s simply no excuse to not visit the coastal country. There are regular flights that don’t require saving up for or it’s a five-hour drive to Muscat for road-trip enthusiasts, and the beautiful landscape and rich culture is not one to skip.

And with the opening of W Muscat – the beachfront hotel that’s set against the stunning backdrop of the rugged Al Hajar Mountains and which sits at the intersection of the bustling Shatti Al Qurum area – we take it as the perfect opportunity to explore both the newly-opened hotel and long-established city.

And here are five reasons why you need to make the trip, too.

Stunning Accommodation

On our drive towards the W Muscat, we already know we’re in store for excellent service, beautiful surroundings and a quirky yet comfortable home for the weekend. But despite our expectations being high, we’re still in awe over the incredible interior design. In fact, it might be the first time ever we haven’t been in a rush to get to our beds upon arrival as there’s much to be mesmerised by on the way from the lobby to our rooms.

The design draws guests in by capturing the explorative nature and the storytelling tradition of the nomadic Bedouin traveller, being likewise a narrative of the nature that surrounds the hotel. Take, for example, the nine-ton frankincense tree sculpture designed by renowned artist Pongsatat Uaiklang that stands out front, welcoming guests upon arrival. The 10 meters tall, stainless steel work of art pays tribute to Omani culture; frankincense was traditionally used to bless and welcome tiresome travellers after long journeys. The mix of local tradition and surrounding nature-inspired decor with the W’s renown style makes for an aesthetically pleasing location both inside the hotel and out.

Of course, this attention to detail carries over into the room – we stay in the king-sized Wonderful Room. Switching it up from the charming chaos that greeted us upon entrance, the décor in the hotel room is calming and soothing – and the ocean view does everything to help that.

Beautiful Surroundings

Oman is known for its sensational landscape, and whether you want to hike up the mountains or head out on a photography mission, there is plenty of natural beauty to capture.

The landscape of the city is dominated by rocky mountains which are a marvel whether you walk beneath them or climb to take in the view from the top – some popular hiking routes include Riyam-Muttrah, Jebel Shams and Al Wakan Village.

Muscat also lies on the Arabian Sea along the Gulf of Oman, meaning sea views, beaches and fresh sea air is in abundance. And with temperatures still warm but generally lower than the UAE (mostly within the late twenties and thirties) it makes for the perfect climate to actually enjoy a day on the beach.

There are also must-visit wadis such as Wadi Al Arbeieen and Wadi Bani Khalid and blooming natural parks like Qurum Natural Park that cement Muscat as a destination for outdoorsy folk who can’t get enough or stunning natural landscapes.

Rich Culture

Muscat is a city filled with cultural gems and is a vastly different image from the likes of Dubai and Abu Dhabi’s town centre. The city is laced with old castles and forts, many of which are open for tourists to explore. In the centre of town is the stunning Muttrah Fort which sits up top a mountain for the city below to see, watching over both the harbour of Muttrah and the road to Old Muscat. The structure dates back to the 16th century, and not only is it beautiful to explore once inside with both a city and sea view from the top, but the stair climb is a noble pursuit in calorie burning too.

Elsewhere, there are historical sites such as Bait Al Maqham Castle and the Mirani Fort. Other noteworthy places to visit include the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Al Alam Palace, The National Museum, Ghalya’s Museum of Modern Art and the Mutrah Souq.

Budding Nightlife

But it’s not all old buildings and Instagram-worthy views – Muscat is home to a budding nightlife scene too. And the great news is, if you stay at the W Muscat, there’s so much happening on your doorstep. In October 2019, the hotel opened a Siddharta Lounge by Buddha-Bar. The rooftop bar is sleek and stylish with weekly live music and regular performances from internationally acclaimed artists along with a series of concept nights. It’s a worthy destination for foods and drinks as well as music.

Elsewhere in the hotel is the Living Room (which sounds like our idea of an evening of fun) which is another social setting to enjoy the interiors of the hotel while trying a delectable mix of beverages. Like in any home, the Living Room plays the heart of the hotel. Brunch lovers, look out for the Candypants brunch that makes a Friday appearance at the WET pool now and again.

Although you’ll have everything you for a great evening when you book in with the W Muscat, if you feel like venturing out of another evening, the night out haunts in town include Al-Ghazal Pub, Copacabana, Left Bank and Piano Lounge.

Delicious Dining

To us, a holiday mostly about overindulging on food… If you think the way we do, then you’re in luck when you stay here. As well as plenty of restaurants around the city centre, the hotel has a handful of unmissable dining establishments, too.

A vast buffet breakfast and lunch is served daily at Harvest (which we naturally really make the most of) and dinner options are served at CHAR. The latter is set over two floors both in the cool and serene interior and overlooking the luxurious pool below. Expect an extensive mix of global dishes, succulent prime steak and a selection of grilled meats and vegetables along with superb service.

And anything else in between? Food and beverage is served both poolside at the Wet Deck bar, while room service is 24 hours.

COYA Dubai Is Our New Monday Night Destination Thanks to This Weekly Live Music Event

One of the Emirate’s most popular Friday brunch destinations has upped its weekday game.

There are certain venues that if you haven’t visited, you can’t truly claim to live in Dubai. Despite COYA – a Peruvian restaurant with seven locations worldwide – only opening its doors in December 2014, it’s already warranted such status. And for most people, a weekend brunch has always been the way to experience the eatery.

But recently, the restaurant located in Four Seasons Resort Dubai Jumeirah Beach’s Restaurant Village has launched a series of weeknight events to ensure tourists and residents alike can experience the charm of COYA any night of the week.

We head over to the Pisco Lounge – the colourful bar area of the establishment perfect for those after light bites instead of numerous indulgent courses – on a Monday night to experience it for ourselves.

Instantly on arrival, the allure of the low lighting and moody purple and blue hues pull us in. We sit with the view of the mixologists working their magic from the impressive selection behind them to one side, and night-time views of the Dubai skyline to the other, browsing the beverage menu as we wait for the music to start.

The eclectic drinks menu is made up of an unusual and inviting selection of local and global mixes, with the classic recipes added for good measure too. There’s certainly something for everyone.

As for bites, they are a far cry from a bowl of peanuts. We, of course, start with a bowl of freshly made guacamole. In signature style, the avocado dip is whisked up before us at our table, making it novel as well as inviting. Then we work through bites such as vegetarian sushi with avocado and spicy mushroom, invigorating salads with an element of crunch added thanks to cracked corn and pomegranate sprinklings and skewered mushroom which is surprisingly rich in flavour and meat-like in texture.

As these small-sized yet flavour-packed dishes arrive at our table throughout the evening, the music courtesy of the live band starts up beside us. With the right balance of enlivening but not overwhelming – chatter amongst friends can continue – the musicians cover a mix of Latin American tunes and classic hits that the bar-goers can sing along too. Occasionally, the singers deter from their stage in front of the skyline backdrop and walk among the diners, making for a pleasantly immersive show.

While it remains one of our favourite brunch options in the city, COYA Dubai has certainly proved it can hold its weight during the week, too.

Coya Dubai’s Azúcar live Latin music night takes place on Monday evening from 8.30pm. Visit coyarestaurant.com for more details.

Get To Know: Hourglass Beauty’s Global Makeup Artist, Chanel Temple

Working her way up from intern to Global Makeup Artist, Chanel Temple talks us through her incredible career and beauty journey as she lands in Dubai.

From working on editorial beauty shoots to creating educational videos on new product launches, Chanel Temple is a busy woman. And as her title gives away, Hourglass’s Global Makeup Artist also spends much of her time travelling the world to further educate both industry insiders and beauty consumers about the brand which launched just over a decade ago.

Teaming this experience with the knowledge gained at other points during her career with the brand – while working as the Assistant Manager at its first flagship store, for example – she knows Hourglass inside out.

From her career to date to when her love of beauty began, Chanel Temple opens up when sitting down with A&E.

Hi Chanel! How are you enjoying your time in Dubai so far?

I love Dubai! I actually visited Dubai almost seven years ago with my parents – a very different experience of course. Now it’s like a whole different city. It’s amazing. But obviously coming with Hourglass and doing all these events is much more luxurious – and such a good way to see the city.

What do you love in particular about beauty in this region?

There’s definitely a playful approach to makeup. Women are very sophisticated when it comes to makeup here, your client and customer really know how to do their own makeup. Eyes are everything – everyone really plays up the eye makeup and brows are a hot topic, so I kind of feel at home here because I always love a smokey eye and dramatic makeup and you definitely proudly see that in this region.

You’ve come so far with Hourglass, but how did you get to where you are now?

My trajectory has kind of been all across the board. So I started with Hourglass in 2013. I’ve always loved makeup and I started with them as an intern, so I was up in the corporate offices putting together all the amazing PR packages for influencers. I was actually the very first intern in the entire company, so I feel like I really do know everything about the brand and climbed my way to where I am now. I tried every position from trainer to working in our flagship store.

Then about two years ago when Instagram stories were really becoming popular we felt like we needed to have a voice on our social media presence – I got to be that voice! I made sure everyone knew who I was, everyone knew what I was doing. And I made sure people knew how passionate I was about the brand. I got to grow as we have grown so it kind of just organically fell into place.

And has there been a particular highlight throughout your time with Hourglass to date?

I feel like every time I get to travel to a new region it really is that kind of moment when I’m like, ‘I’m really here with the best of the best in this area and I’m getting to teach them!’ When you’re in these moments of realising people are paying attention to what you have to say… I worked really hard to get to where I am but it is that moment of ‘wow it’s happening.’

I think the first time I travelled for Hourglass was to Australia. It was the first time I had ever travelled by myself. And I was on this long flight alone and I got to Perth and I was like on the other side of the world and I’m doing it and it definitely was a moment of – ‘aha! Here we are.’ And I’m still not fully used to it two years later but I love it.

How about any struggles you’ve had to overcome to get to where you are now?

I think with any job there are going to be ups and downs and different challenges, and every region can be a different challenge. But to always stay humble is what I’ve learned; you’re never too good to do any job. Sometimes you get to a place where you have to set everything up and you have to do all the leg work to make it happen – it doesn’t matter what position you are, you still have to have that humbleness that you are not too proud. Anything worthwhile comes with a little fight to get there.

So before all this, how did you fall in love with beauty?

My mum was always into makeup so she always let me explore and play with it. She definitely wasn’t someone who was like ‘wash that eyeliner off!’ – she encouraged it. So I always grew up in a space where I could express myself with makeup. In a report from my seventh grade I said wanted to be a makeup artist, but I think I got discouraged as it’s such a saturated industry, so I felt for so long that I would never be successful, I’d never make money doing it and that it would never work out.

I kept trying to do other things but they just weren’t fulfilling me or making me happy. So finally, I just said ‘whatever, even if I’m not successful I’ll be doing what I love and enjoy,’ and having that mentality changed my whole life – my whole career.

Are there any particularly early beauty memories you have?

It always goes back to my mum. She used to model – a beautiful woman – and when we were younger if she couldn’t get a babysitter, she would bring us with her. I remember she put me at the makeup counter and the artist would babysit me as she modelled – and I loved just watching them do the makeup and I would play with it, three years old playing with the lipstick and eyeliner.

You mention how much you travel within your line of work – are there any travel beauty secrets you have to share?

I’ve learned no skincare on flights – it’s pretty much like a bacteria trap on planes. If it’s a really long flight, you can freshen up and add more moisture, but don’t do your sheet masks, no sprays – just do as much before you get on the flight. Pack on all your oils, all your moisturisers before just before as it’s a bacteria pit. Don’t wear makeup, and don’t eat the food – I bring all my own snacks, tons of fruit, as the in-flight food is so high in sodium that I bloat like a balloon.

How do you react to criticism that people who work in the beauty industry sometimes face?

I think you have to realise that it’s transformative, it is not meant to hide your face. Even with fashion people will say that it’s shallow or materialistic but it’s a way to express who you are and it’s a way to feel confident. I’m not out here saving lives, but I am changing them. I’m helping people feel beautiful and confident with the face they have, providing tools to help elevate people. But I laugh at it and I think it’s ridiculous. We’re not shallow, we want to feel the best version of ourselves and sometimes a lipstick will do that for you! And it’s absolutely an art in life.

What’s new and exciting about working with Hourglass right now?

We did recently launch our brow sculpting pencils, so in term of new products, I think it’s absolutely amazing. I mean the brow look is already very well established in the beauty world, so when I saw the products I was like ‘okay, cool another brow product’, but it truly transformed how I style my brows.

The messaging that we created with these products is having an unrestricted brow – so whether you have unruly brows or thin brows it’s about embracing the arch we all were given and not feeling like you have to follow the trend. Work with what you’ve got – embrace it, love it. I love the message to empower women and not make them feel like they need to follow a trend.

And of course being a cruelty-free brand we’ve gone a bit further by going fully vegan in 2020, so the fact that we have integrity behind who we are – and this mission. We just did a campaign called eye to eye, so we had people come in with their pets to shoot eye to eye with them to get the message across that we care about that.

And what is the last hurdle to going completely vegan after being cruelty-free from the beginning?

Our CEO and Founder [Carisa Janes] wanted to change what the term cruelty-free means in the beauty industry – she feels that it should mean no animal by-products should be used in the ingredients. We’ve always been conscious of that so our products are already about 80 per cent vegan, but it’s things like beeswax. Carminic is another one that’s been hard [to phase out]. It’s crushed beetle wings that you’ll find in almost anything purple or pink – lipsticks and blushes, almost every single one you would imagine.

With us, formulations are the most important thing and we don’t want to just go out and find the first alternative. We didn’t find something that was meeting our expectation so Carisa said ‘I’ll make it. I’m going to make my own.’ So we’ve developed an alternative that is meeting the standard of Hourglass formulations. For us, it is super important that our customer isn’t going to see a transition – we don’t even want them to notice.

You don’t have to compromise luxury for cruelty-free and we’re trying to show that. You can still have exquisite products that perform really well and have a conscience to it.

Do you have a motto in life and in beauty?

In life, it’s an Oscar Wilde quote: “Everything in moderation, including moderating.” That’s always been my favourite since I was a kid. Because sometimes you need excess in your life as well!

And in beauty, it’s that there are no rules to makeup. Maybe there are guidelines or things that work best for us, but I hate when people say ‘you should, you need to, or you need this.’ No – throw that out of the window. If you want to wear something that’s bold and weird, do it.

What do you still want to achieve within your career?

I’ve already been so fortunate with the opportunities I’ve been given, so I’m excited about what comes with every new day. But I would love to be able to do more celebrity clients or work on movies or on set – something like that. I’m lucky I get to do so many campaigns with Hourglass and I travel and meet so many people and artists all over, but I just think it would be cool to be on a movie set, to have the power or control to dictate the art of a movie. Maybe someday!

This App Will Change The Way You Work Out AND Unwind For The Better

While Privilee was launched in Dubai in 2015, the lifestyle membership app is having a moment right now – and if you haven’t transformed the way you pick a pool day or burn off calories yet, then now’s the time to make a change.

If there’s one thing we know for sure, it’s that routine can become boring – variety is the spice of life, after all.

And that definitely applies to our workout routines. Going nowhere on the treadmill may get our heart rate up but it’s doing zilch for captivating our interest or imagination.

Which is why we’re fans of the growing trend to sign up to one app or membership program (one fee and one password to remember, rejoice!) that widens our options and horizons rather than limits them.

Pool days at Atlantis are included with Privilee

The latest one to win us over? Privilee. The lifestyle app gives members access to a wide range of free or discounted fitness classes, access to gyms, pool and beach days, spa treatments and sports activities such as tennis courts and golf courses. Discounts on food and drink at bars and restaurants all over the region are just a tap away, too.

After trying out the app in the Dubai Marina area, here’s an example of a weekend can be made better with the help of Privilee.

Westin, Dubai Marina

Thursday Unwind

What’s better than clocking off from work and meeting your closest pals at a nearby bar?

Log in to the app, and find discounts at venues such as Shades Pool Bar in Address Marina or Ginter in InterContineal Dubai Marina, saving up to 40 per cent from the total bill.

Friday Funday

Now, this is what the weekend is all about. Treat yourself to a trip to the pool, followed up with a spa treatment and a delicious meal out.

Head to the Westin Dubai for example, and enjoy free access to the pool and beach, 25 per cent discount at the Heavenly Spa and 25 per cent discounts in the hotel’s eateries such as Bussola, El Sur, Fish Beach Tavern, Asia De Cuba and more.

TribeFit, Dubai Marina

Saturday Shape Up

After all that indulging and lazing around the previous two days, a Saturday shape up is surely in order.

Before the midday heat, spend the morning flexing your squash skills at Habtoor Grand’s courts for a one-hour complimentary session. Got little ones? Let them run around at the Junior Jungle Kids’ Club, free for children age 4 – 12 with Privilee, while you’re there, too.

Finally, work up a sweat thank to the access to so many gyms with the app. With such a wide variety of classes to chose from, TribeFit along the marina is a good bet; finish your weekend with a relaxing Power Flow Yoga session at 6pm.

A weekend well (not over!) spent.

A&E Recommends… Heading to Indian Restaurant Masti to Explore The Fusion of Flavours

Offering up a refreshing twist on Indian cuisine, Masti in La Mer Dubai delivers a dining experience that’s truly unique in the region.

Head over to La Mer of an evening, and there are plenty of options when it comes to dining out. But no matter how many times we go to explore the beachside area  – and regardless of whether we’re seeking exquisite drinks or flavourful food – there’s always one establishment that pulls us in; Masti.

Having first opened in December 2017, the eatery has quickly become a go-to for brilliant off-beat Indian food. Headed up by chef Hari Nayak – who was a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America before spending 20 years working in New York restaurants, becoming known as an expert in and advocate for South Indian cuisine – the menu is something to marvel.

While Masti has an unbeatable brunch offering on both Friday and Saturday (the latter a new addition the restaurant’s tempting weekly events) serving up menu favourites and delectable drinks alongside upbeat live music, we head to La Mer for dinner.

But before we consider the menu, it’s the alluring decor that draws us through the door. Walls range between deep forest green and distressed teal-blue, while more vibrant colours come from plush yellow upholstery and pink patterned cushions scattered across the seating.

The walls are lined with stunning art, but the stand out feature is that stain-glassed elephant head mounted above the bar. Not to mention the equally colourful terrace area with open views of the city’s skyline.

The stained glass elephant head that hangs over the bar at Masti is a stand out feature of the interior decor

Yes despite the attention to detail that’s clearly gone into the beautiful interior design, that’s not the reason why we keep coming back for more.

On concept alone, Masti is causing diners to double-take. It takes age-old flavours, spices and sauces that have been used in India for centuries and blends them with dishes borrowed from all over the world; think a new take on Peruvian ceviche with the black bass ceviche or the bhatti merguez that uses lamb to recreate a classic North African dish with Indian flavours such as garlic masala.

We love the art work spread across the walls at the Indian eatery

When it comes to vegetarian (and even vegan) options, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more flavour-packed menu and accommodating eatery.

Not overly hungry and on a limited time, we keep our overall order short and sweet, making the sharing starters the main focus.

The spiced beetroot croquettes in a red pepper sauce with kale were some of our favourite bites at Masti

The spiced beetroot croquettes in a red pepper sauce with kale were some of our favourite bites at Masti

As for salads and bites, the two of us work through a balsamic strawberry and arugula salad which contains toasted hazelnuts and avocado drizzled with a citrus and herb vinaigrette, dynamite prawns koliwada with a red pepper aioli, spiced beetroot croquettes served with crispy kale and eggplant bharta that comes in two variants and is served with flatbread.

Everything is explosive for the tastebuds and looks just as pleasing upon arrival. The beetroot croquettes in particular pull us in; the humble root vegetable translates into a mouthful that is both crispy and creamy while bursting with flavour.

A mix of textures and flavours in the balsamic strawberry and arugula salad wins us over

For the main course, we work our way together through smoked lentil and quinoa tikki with a side of smashed chaat roast potatoes.

The former is a beautiful mix of textures. The base of the shallow bowl is lined with the smoked lentils in a rich sauce, with the crispy battered mushrooms and vegetable tikki protruding out. This way, the crunch is preserved as the two meet when we take a bite.

There's are many delicious desserts at Masti, but we can't resist this new take of the Lotus biscuit

There are many delicious desserts at Masti, but we can’t resist this new take on the Lotus biscuit

Although we can’t stay for dessert, we find it incredibly difficult to wave goodbye to the Lotus snap, crackle and pop option that’s in the kitchen rather than our bellies. Yes, that’s a Lotus biscuit and white chocolate sandwich with hints of coffee and saffron basundi, an Indian sweet treat made with condensed milk.

The only comfort is we know it won’t be long until we’re back once again.

Looking For A Facial Using Natural and Organic Beauty Products? Then Check Out Queens Beauty Lounge’s Offerings

There are so many places in Dubai to head to if you’re after a skin-brightening or pore-declogging facial, but when it comes to organisations that utilise natural beauty products throughout the process, options are limited.

There are so many things to think about when it comes to sourcing our beauty products nowadays, and for more and more of us, that now focuses around finding gentle yet effective products that are free of harsh chemicals.

And for those of us who can’t get by without a regular or occasional facial to give our skin the extra treat it deserves, finding spas or salons that use natural and organic ingredients can be tricky.

But luckily, Queens Beauty Lounge – with locations along Dubai Marina and in JLT – does just this. As well as being able to pop in for a long-lasting manicure and pedicure or a fresh new hairstyle, the beauty salon also offers massages and facials.

With an ethos for natural beauty, it offers a range of treatments using skincare products from brands such as Shirley Conlon Organics and YonKa. The first is a Dubai-born line that is both chemical and cruelty-free. The second is a French skincare brand born in 1954 that creates skincare and body care products using natural resources.

Dior Sauvage: Explore the New Fragrance for Men from the World of Christian Dior

Johnny Depp teams up with the French beauty house once again as the face of the new Dior Sauvage Parfum for men.

When it comes to fragrance, the world of Christian Dior holds some of the most iconic scents with a long-lasting legacy in the industry – think Miss Dior and Hypnotic Poison for women or Dior Homme and Fahrenheit for men.

And of course, another classic from the perfumers is Sauvage, which launched in 2015.

The name – and scent – is a modern take on the debut male aroma from the Dior, Eau Sauvage, which launched in 1966.

Reinvented once again for 2019,  this time the new parfum is more concentrated and intense, adding more depths to the aroma.

French perfumer François Demachy took inspiration in the wilderness of the wild outdoors when creating the scent, conjuring an image of fragrant woods crackling in the fire as the night sky reflects off nearby waters.

On the creation Demachy said: “Sauvage is an open-ended score. Its composition is so complex that you can add original perspectives by crafting it with subtle nuances. For this new Parfum, I imagined an intense freshness meeting the smoothness of an Oriental scent. I kept the powerful soul of Sauvage intact by giving it nocturnal accents, an animal attraction and some rounder facets.”

Notes include a dry amber core with a sage aspect emphasized by a leather accord, a sweet touch with Virginia Cedar takes you by surprise with an unexpected note of candied raspberry and creamy Sri-Lankan Sandalwood essence.

K By Dolce & Gabbana Is The New Fragrance For Men You Need To Know About

A new edition to the Dolce & Gabanna fragrance family, K is the latest scent for men that celebrates a new era of masculinity.

The meaning of masculinity has seen a shift in recent years for the better, giving flexibility to the term and to what it means to be a man. Along with it, fragrances designed especially for the male sex have also seen a shift, with overpowering and overwhelming scents making their way out.

And in its place comes aftershave that embodies modern masculinity, such as the new K by Dolce & Gabbana. It captures the essence of a man in his element, a man who is the king of his everyday life.

The K wearer is full of vitality, effortlessly charming, grounded and masterfully balanced the respect of tradition while embracing modernity.

The warm, earthy aromas such as sensual cedarwood merged with vetiver and patchouli evokes visions of the Italian countryside and the Mediterranean midday sun, while bold citrus notes of sparkling blood orange and pressed Sicilian lemon bring that electricity to the sultry scent.

Other essences adding layers include fresh juniper berry, amber accents of calming clary sage,  crisp geranium and restorative lavandin.

And this perfectly reflects the creation behind K, as the aroma was made in collaboration between two renowned perfumers – Daphné Bugey and Nathalie Lorson.

Can You Really Whiten Teeth in an Hour? Dr Apa Experts Reveal How LED Teeth Whitening Does (And Will!) Work

When it comes to a brighter smile in a flash, more and more people are turning to LED whitening treatments. But from how they work and if they actually do, we take to the dentist chair at Apa Aesthetic Dental & Cosmetic Centre to suss out the truth.

So many of us desire a whiter smile, but as with everything else when it comes to modern living, we want instant results. And if we can’t have instant results, we’ll settle for a pretty speedy one.

And that’s where the rise of LED teeth whitening treatments comes in. But can you really get a whiter smile in just an hour, and if so, how exactly does it work?

To answer these common queries about the process, we headed over to Dubai clinic Apa Aesthetic Dental & Cosmetic Centre. Following up on the success of his New York clinic, Dr Michael Apa opened up shop in the UAE in 2015, bringing with him his innovative approach to modern dentistry thanks to his revolutionary new approach known as facial aesthetic design and his inventive techniques to create the most natural smile possible.

A glimpse inside the Apa Clinic treatment room

Speaking with Dr Beverley T. Watson – a crucial member of the Apa team who has been in the Dental Industry for over 20 years specialising in Dental Hygiene – as we try out the treatment for ourselves, we find out everything you’ve been wanting to ask about the process.

So, how does LED teeth whitening work?

Dr. Watson: “The LED light actually speeds up the oxidizing reaction of the whitening agent placed onto the teeth. This removes internal stains quicker than home whitening treatment, therefore whitening enamel fast!”

At Apa, the dental experts employ the Philips Zoom WhiteSpeed to administrate the whitening treatment. Featuring the latest lamp technology, it is both more effective and much safer than older generation models.

After a hygienic clean to remove surface stains, the LED treatment is ready to begin. With a mouthguard (it’s not as uncomfortable as you might think, believe us) in place, protection to the gums is put in place before the whitening gel is applied to teeth. The light is then placed in front of your mouth to begin the process. Reclined in the chair watching your choice of film or show on the TV above, Dr Watson says on alert in the room should any sensitivity occur.

This lasts twenty minutes before the treatment is removed and reapplied two more times for maximum effect.

Is LED whitening suitable for everyone? If not, who?

Dr Watson: “It is suitable for people with perfect enamel i.e. no fillings on their teeth but stained from colourific products in our diet like tea/coffee/coke/smoking/dark drinks. There are many other options for people who are unhappy with their smile.

“We have a very individually tailored approach here at Apa Aesthetic, yes, we do specialize in Veneers, but this is not all we do. Best to come for a smile consultation”.

If your teeth are in relatively good order and are just in need of a boost, however, the LED treatment is highly effective – let alone simple and convenient.

Book in for a smile consultation here.

How long do the results last?

Dr Watson: “This very much depends again on your diet; how much coffee, tea and coke you drink? Do you smoke?” Avoiding such items can help keep teeth whiter for longer.

Other factors that make a difference include your day to day dental routine. If you use an electric toothbrush and floss daily, for example, stains shouldn’t build up on teeth in a hurry. Likewise, regular visits to your dental hygienist will ensure plaque and stains don’t build up, meaning a bright smile for longer.

Dr Watson assures: “Minimum six months maximum of two years without a top-up”.

At-home whitening kit

Several months after undergoing our treatment, our smile is still as white as when we left the clinic. But to get the most from your one-hour session, then invest the Apa Beauty at-home care.

We take with us the Apa Beauty’s DIY whitening strips. Another hour of wearing them at home, and once again our teeth are granted that fresh from the dentist gleam – well worth taking with you once your session is up.

So, can you really whiten teeth in one hour? We can affirm, as long as your enamel is in okay shape, then yes you can – from both the dentist chair and thanks to the easy to use at home top-ups.

With a catwalk career that reigned in the 2000s, Brazilian model Gisele Bündchen is still one of the most recognisable faces in the industry.

While she stepped down from the runway several years ago, that doesn’t mean the 39-year-old has retired from the world of beauty and fashion just yet.

Because as it’s recently been announced, Gisele has now taken become the face of one of Dior’s most iconic skincare lines in 2020 – Capture Totale.

Paris Fashion Week Highlights for Spring 2020: From Louis Vuitton to Giambattista Valli

As the fashion parade moves from Milan to Paris, we look at the Spring/Summer 2020 style highlights debuted in the French capital this September.

Louis Vuitton

It was the last show of the season, meaning Louis Vuitton had to deliver something memorable to seal off Paris Fashion Week for another year. For the Spring/Summer collection that will take the French fashion house into a new decade, Creative Director Nicolas Ghesquière tried to call to a new Belle Époque – an era predating the wars of the world that oozes a sense of comfortability and settlement, bringing together the 20th century with the nostalgia towards it from the 21st century. The designs saw chevron blazers worn over a waistcoat and checkered shirts, ruffle skirts teamed with shirts and sequins, peter pan collar dresses with buttons and verticle stripes and so on. Our favourite accessory was the VHS style handbag, sure to tug at the strings of nostalgics everywhere.

Miu Miu

This season from Miuccia Prada, we were gifted a ready-to-wear collection that is just that – every piece for Spring/Summer 2020 is actually wearable in day to day life. For the season, Miu Miu gave a lesson in neutral dressing with black and white forming the landscape, with shades of beige, navy and cream working their way in. The collection aims to be “a proposal of fashion as a process, and a dialogue.” The dialogue in question is between the wearer and the worn, creating the paradoxical combination of the intentional and the impromptu, the serious and the playful. Although the hues and cuts may seem sensible at first, the play comes in with the likes of broken down frills, abstract florals and mismatching buttons.

Giambattista Valli

Of course, florals are a given for the season of blooms, but it means something a little different to those at Giambattista Valli, who have a close passion and love of all things floral. Protesting against some of the grungier, tougher approaches to fashion nowadays, Valli is saying feminity can see be pretty and nature-inspired. This time, motifs included wildflowers, sweetpeas on evening jackets and sunflower and mint green hues. Driving the point home, orchids were even used as a beauty accessory for several looks, adorning models’ faces as they walked the runway.

Alexander McQueen

The collection showcased by Alexander McQueen’s Creative Director, Sarah Burton, was not only a marvel to look at – she gave a whole new meaning to power suits and mixed tough leather with dainty dresses in a new way – but there was so much rich context behind the 42 looks, too. For one, the British fashion house upcycled lace, organza and tulle from previous seasons. For another, the collection came as a community effort as the entire McQueen staff embroidered two of the catwalk looks by hand for the runway show – Burton aimed to reflect a yearning for people to take time to make connections. And she truly mixed worlds together with this stunning collection – from suits with cut out details and lace protruding from it to suits that merged into dresses to gowns that were full of texture, colour and fanciful volume.

Stella McCartney

Always a champion in the world of animal rights and ecological sustainability, British Fashion Designer’s desires to contribute well with her work has only grown in momentum in the current climate (scare) taking place right now – of course she was one of the major brands to sign The Fashion Pact ahead on the G7 conference earlier this year. So what did her Spring/Summer 2020 collection bring in that light? Well, the simplistic chic collection in her most sustainable yet, as she claims more than 75 per cent of materials used are eco-friendly. As for the style, she presented at Paris Fashion Week a selection black and off-white pairings with an effortless-style feel such as billowing trousers and an unbuttoned blazer, horizontal striped tees tucked into black culottes and one-piece dresses that slip on with ease. There were powder blue blouses with scalloped sleeves, understated power suits and floral print dresses in a range of cuts ready for the new season.

Givenchy

With Clare Waight Keller’s latest designs for Givenchy, she takes the French fashion house to a crossroads; between the balance in the botanical world to toughened-up urban energy. She calls upon the beauty and blooms on old-world Paris and the denim-filled aesthetics of new York City simultaneously – these floral hues and prints being contracte with dulled-tones and all-in-one sleek. The runway saw crisp poplin, canvas and taffeta blouses layered over-skirts and sundresses. Hourglass tailoring sans lapel joins the new suit silhouette of a long, slim jacket and shell-knit Bermuda shorts or a relaxed pant. Smooth leather trench coats, bandana tops and bustiers transform soft drape into something architectural and opulent

Hermès

Nadège Vanhee-Cybulski, Hermès’s Creative Director, headed back to the house’s traditional routes for Spring/Summer 2020, delivering a sleek and sophisticated collection – just four months after giving birth to baby girl, proving there’s nothing about to slow her down. As for the ready to wear offering, it was a show of leather being moulded into tailored trousers and laser-cut dresses, shell tops with a graphic feel and head-to-toes outfits that mixed different shades of the same colour for a clean finish that’s both luxe but attainable in day to day life.

Balenciaga

Balenciaga’s Creative Director Demna Gvasalia took on an eternally tough subject matter – least not during the times we live in – when conceptualising his collection for the upcoming season; politics. This was clear from the onset, as the staging reflected a political arena of sorts. As for the collection, it certainly was stern and serious to start, with boxy (yet wearable) shapes and sensible shades of slate grey and midnight black. Deep orange dresses, aqua blue designs and even slogan prints came out against the regal blue backdrop next – the campaign dresses that come in the run-up to an election.

Elie Saab

As always, the Lebanese designer has put out a collection that is designed to turn heads on the red carpet that was described as: “a reflection on the diversity than animates the great savannas of Africa.” Full-frontal dresses came in gowns in jersey, cady, taffeta and lace ruled the runway, and more daytime attire came in sandy desert shades and eyecatching prints. The Spirit of the Savanna (as the collection is called) featured African-style jewellery too, from beaded necklaces and earrings and wide bangles.

Celine

Another season, another collection influenced by the Sixties and Seventies for Celine. For Spring/Summer 2020, Hedi Slimane showcased the eras in all their slickness – bootcut jeans teamed with blazers, flares that are actually wearable day to day, boho-chic that won’t scare off the straight and narrow. These looks were mixed and layered with effortless style, bringing the best of the era – with some modern touches – to the forefront

Christian Dior

For the new season, Christian Dior’s Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri called upon nature as the inspiration behind the colour scheme and fabric choices. But rather than tropical forest greens and exotic animal prints that we’ve seen elsewhere over the last few seasons, the direction took on more of a deep-blue-skies and meadows-of-hay vibe. In fact, Chiuri was inspired by photographs of Catherine Dior – Christian Dior’s sister – in which she appears amid her flowers in the garden, as that was her passion. The designs were presented in the style of preserving herbaria, with unique embroidery and textures throughout.

Saint Laurent

Since taking on his Creative Director role at YSL, Anthony Vaccarello’s runway shows for the brand have taken on a particular identity – almost more or a concert than a fashion runway. For Spring 2020, white beams lit up the outdoor runway, and to follow, models came out donning uniquely tailored jackets over tiny shorts and cutoff jeans, funnel leg western boots, embroidered dresses with paisley patterning, smock dresses, chiffon blouses and animal print dresses. Of course, the collection of signature head-to-toe black finished the show.

See Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2020 Collection Showcased During Paris Fashion Week

Despite a gatecrasher trying to create a scene, Creative Director Virginie Viard’s designs for the upcoming season still stole the show.

Named Creative Director earlier in 2019 after the passing of Karl Lagerfeld, Virginie Viard – who worked by his side in the French fashion house for 30 years – had big shoes to fill.

And Viard, who was previously Chanel’s Studio Director, is proving she’s up to the task. For Spring/Summer 2020, the French designer took to the rooftops of Paris to put on a show, evoking a sense of “a youthful breeze of liberty”.

On the decision, she said: “The roofs of Paris remind me of the atmosphere of the Nouvelle Vague. I saw silhouettes walking on the roofs. I thought about Kristen Stewart playing Jean Seberg and all the actresses Gabrielle Chanel dressed at that time”.

And the collections brought together signature Chanel with a fresh, youthful-dress-up feel to merge the worlds together. Tweed and suit jackets were in tow, while hot pants with tights and layers upon layers of bling-worthy accessories were worn, too.

Both day and nightwear opted for volume and simplicity simultaneously – there were jackets with cuffs and flounced collars with short-n-tight fit skirts, capri pants with denim jackets, straight-cut masculine tweed jackets are given a fresh cut with playsuits, jumpsuits and dress designs

Long coats come in tweed or wool crêpe while a striped top and a carelessly knotted shirt add masculine-feminine accents.

As for jewellery and accessories – more was more, and glitzy designs offered a glamorous update to classic fabrics and prints.

How to Spend a Weekend Staycation at Dukes The Palm

Head to the Royal Hideaway located on The Palm Jumeirah and soak up the Marina views from the incredible infinity pool by day and tuck into unbeatable Indian cuisine at Khyber by night.

When it comes to staycation destinations in Dubai, it’s hard to beat hotels located on the famous Palm. With the busy city miles away and beaches surrounding every building, it makes for the perfect getaway from the high rises, even if only for one night.

And one of the destinations not to be overlooked when booking in for a weekend stay is Dukes The Palm. If you’re planning to visit for the day and/or spent the evening in the regal location, here’s what you need to know.

INTERIOR & ACCOMMODATION

Lobby

The five-star hotel takes after the boutique hotel located in London’s Mayfair, which pays homage to British royalty due to its regal location that holds connections with members of the British royal family from the past – a theme that’s carried on in Dubai.

Suites have names such as ‘The Duke of Cambridge’ and keeping in with the British theme, rooms are accordingly decorated. Old-timely portraits are placed around the hotel, and London-inspired photography hangs in frames in the rooms – think the famous double-decker buses and red telephone boxes.

Junior suite

Having first opened in 2016 (being fully open in 2017) the hotel boasts 279 luxuriously appointed rooms including 64 suites with spectacular views.

POOL AND LEISURE

If you haven’t visited Dukes The Palm yet, then you’re missing out on an incredible (and very sizable!) infinity pool with amazing views of the Dubai Marina, great pool-service for food and drink and easy beach access for those looking for a sandier lazing experience.

Pool view

But if the heat gets out of hand, rest assured as an inside pool is also open too, and it’s equally sizable with equally impressive views.

Elsewhere, the lazy river was another highlight when spending the day soaking up the sun at Dukes The Palm. What beats wedging into a rubber ring and little the gentle current carry you along as you equally let your thoughts drift?

If you’re more into raising your heartbeat than simply resting, then be sure to check out the fully equipt fitness centre, too.

RESTAURANTS AND DINING

Whether you’re extending your day trip to evening or staying overnight, there is one dining destination well worth checking out. We head to Khyber for dinner, an Indian restaurant located on the 15th floor of the hotel – meaning we enjoy a sea view while filling up on food.

But the inside interior is more showstopping that the breathtaking views – calming stone and beiges hues with pillars and archways form the structure, while mosaic tilings on the floor and intricate portraits hanging from the walls make for a beautiful setting.

And it only gets better with the food. After a delicious selection of popadoms and dips, we order a chicken kebab platter with tikka seasoning and a selection of vegetarian samosas and patties. For the mains, we share a vegetarian biriyani, palak (spinach) and paneer curry and a dal Tarka with breads and rice, of course. So full of flavour, we literally force ourselves to clean our plates despite our tightening waistlines and daydream about our meal for days afterwards.

Dukes The Palm

Other dining options include West 14th Steakhouse and the Great British Restaurant, a generous breakfast buffet is served in the latter come morning.

All in all, a weekend well spent with one of the best infinity pools in the city. Find out more about the Dukes The Palm at barcelo.com.

A&E Interviews… Tania’s Teahouse Founder Tania Lodi on Social Media Success, Fun With Puns and Future Plans

When Tania Lodi opened up her colourful coffee shop just over a year ago, it would have been hard for outsiders to predict both her regional and international success. But speaking to the entrepreneur, she reveals her business savvy and ambition that’s got her this far – and it shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.

If you haven’t visited Tania’s Teahouse yet, you surely would have seen it pop up on your Instagram feed – whether you’re a Dubai dweller or not. Since opening in April 2018, the cafe and tea house located on Jumeirah Beach Road nearby the Burj Al Arab has become the go-to space for girly get-togethers, solo study sessions and even group talks about health and wellness for residents seeking a space with style and substance.

And recently, Tania’s Teahouse has been named the 7th most Instagrammable cafe in the world, cementing its position as an entrepreneurial powerhouse that has appeal to customers across the globe – as Founder Tania Lodi explains to us.

Chatting to A&E, Lodi talks through her vision, how social media has shaped her business and how she plans to keep things fresh in an ever-changing industry.

Tania Lodi, Founder of Tania’s Teahouse

What do you think makes Tania’s teahouse different from anywhere else in the UAE?

I sincerely believe that our vibe and our space is unlike no other. Our interiors are so welcoming, on-trend and full of life. Our food is delicious and so intricately plated and Instagrammable, our puns are very much intended, and on point (and have actually spurred quite a trend here, where lots of cafes have copied us!) Our communi-tea feel (boardgame/bookshelf wall, classes, workshops, and welcoming space for events) are unlike other cafes, and most importantly, our specialized tea flavors and focus on health benefits are truly unique

How has social media impacted the success of your business?

Social media has definitely been the catalyst to boost our reputation. I mean, being featured as the 7th most Instagrammable cafe in the world in only about a year of being open has been unreal! We’ve received so much press coverage and people coming in after finding us on Instagram, because Tania’s Teahouse is a place that you want to be seen at, and a place that makes you feel at home.

You’ve recently been named the 7th most Instagramable cafe – how does that feel?

It feels amazing, I can’t even describe it to you! I’m so proud and grateful for our amazing tea-m, my family, and everyone who made this possible. However, I’ve always had the heart of a dreamer. I want to make it to number one next year.

Tell us about the plans you have to expand the business and keep things fresh?

My dream has always been to open multiple branches, in major metropolitan cities (such as Dubai, London, Toronto, Tokyo, etc). I would love to do spin-offs of culturally related puns for each different country, and just have a space in each that harbours positivi-tea, good food and vibes, and prettiness oozing out of everything. Keeping things fresh, we have to keep revamping and adapting to what’s in! It’s a lot of work, but it’s fun stuff.

You recently held a wellness week at Tania’s Teahouse. Where did this idea come from and why was it important to you?

I always envisioned hosting useful events at Tania’s Teahouse, and wellness especially is a way of life that I think is super important for everyone to implement into their daily lives; whether it’s concerning sustainability, self-love, clean eating, mental health, etc.

Our tea-riffic marketing and events manager Roha Daud onboard wellness week as her child and did an amazing job connecting with people within the industry (including Lush Cosmetics, who held a bath bomb making workshop). We both felt we needed to host events that give back to our communi-tea, and address relevant issues in terms of well-being.

What do you consider your biggest achievement to date?

Being so well-known in different countries, and having people travel all the way to Dubai, just to come to TTH! We’ve had guests come straight from the airport, with their suitcases in hand, exclaiming that they’ve come all the way here for us, and straight from the airport in excitement! In addition to our amazing guests from all around the world, we’ve also had a lot of international coverage.

What has been the biggest challenge?

The biggest challenge has been separating my personal and my professional life. Having a business with my name on the door and being so directly involved in it can be super stressful, especially being involved with all customer reviews, messages, and feedback. In the first few months of being open, having an unpleasant customer experience would ruin my day or leave me in tears the rest of the day. I take things to heart and I would find it super unfair if we would receive criticism that didn’t have any truth to it. However, in this nature of the business we have to always have a decorum of respect and understanding, even if it’s lies! Now I’ve developed tough skin and I can accept that we aren’t everyone’s ‘cup of tea’.

What’s your personal motto?

If the ocean can calm itself, so can you – we are both salt and water mixed with air. I’m a huge advocate for deep breathing and mindfulness, and I really think implementing this into my life has decreased my anxiety and calmed my mood. As an entrepreneur, you oftentimes feel as if there are not enough hours in the day to work on things, and getting stressed, overwhelmed, and frazzled happen every few minutes!

And your professional motto?

Kill with kindness. I believe in karma, and I’ve been raised to believe that if you do good, good things will happen to you. I don’t believe in tearing others down to succeed yourself, and I really think kindness can go a long way. Even with rude, nasty, unreasonable people, I believe in being gracious but assertive and never stoop to their level.

If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?

Being weird and quirky is cool! In grade 2, I had hexagon-shaped glasses, and I carried a butterfly net with me in my backpack. After school, I would bake cupcakes with my mom, and I would draw with chalk on the sidewalk, and read my favourite books. I was always into thinking outside the box, creativity, and things to do with food and aesthetics. Craftiness was happiness for me. My mom used to always bring craft kits for my sister and me, and we were always thinking of ways to DIY things. Crafts were definitely not cool back then, and I’m glad I stuck by it and let my creativity grow and define who I am as a person.

What would you tell yourself 10 years from now?

I would tell myself to stick with the ‘5 by 5 rule’ don’t focus on something for more than five minutes, that won’t affect you five days, or even five years from now. Don’t catastrophize things, and keep things into perspective. Go with the flow, and always have faith that any hurdle that comes your way is manageable. Engage in self-care, whether it’s watching re-runs of Grey’s Anatomy and drooling over McDreamy, yoga, deep breathing, facial rolling, and find a few minutes out of each day to do things that make you happy!

What do you say ‘no’ to?

People who make me feel small and undermine me. I face bullying of all sorts in this industry, including people trying to hustle for discounts/special treatment/unreasonable requests, companies or individuals who treat me like a child, or people who think I’m weak and emotional, as a woman. No way! I have self-respect, I know my self-worth, and even with humility, you shouldn’t let people walk all over you.

How do you want the world to remember you?

I want to be known as someone who has left their mark of positivi-tea on the world. I hope that the customer experience I provide brings happiness, and allows people to escape the daily nuances of their lives. Everyone has something going on or is struggling in some aspect or another, and for me, cafe culture has always been my escape. Bringing a book, or my laptop to a cafe and basking in its energy got me through my toughest times, and I hope I can do that for others.

What do you still want to achieve?

I would love to open new branches in different cities/countries and explore the boundaries of creativity with embracing different cultures, creating puns and menus around them, and different types of Insta-worthy installations.

Who is the person that inspires you the most?

I would have to say, my parents and sister. I was very lucky to grow up in a household where I was always supported with my hopes and dreams, and especially in terms of TTH, my parents invested, and my sister helped me out a lot. Having TTH start as a family business was super fortunate, as I was 21 years old with zero business experience when I approached my family with this idea, and they had utmost faith in me.

A&E Recommends… Dining at OPSO in The Dubai Mall and Soaking Up the City Views

OPSO in The Dubai Mall brings together modern Greek cuisine with warm hospitality, and the location seals the deal for a special evening out.

We’re not sure whether it’s just our imagination or whether based on fact, but it feels like more and more Greek eateries are opening up in Dubai at the moment. Of course, for those who are fans of the cuisine, this is great news, but in turn, it makes it harder to come to a decision when picking a location for your next evening out.

Fret not, as we have the answer for you. OPSO Dubai, which serves as the first international opening for the eatery made famous in London’s Marylebone, serves up an entire host of Greek dishes from the familiar to the more far fetched that are flavour packed without the price list raising any eyebrows.

Heading over to the restaurant located in The Dubai Mall, we discover that what OPSO does so well is perfect the simple dish, taking the ordinary to extraordinary.

We work our way through the Crispy Hummus topped with ground za’atar, Dakos Salad made up of olive oil rusks, cherry tomatoes, barrel-matured feta, capers red onions and Kalamata olives, sourdough bread with olives and wild chips seasons with oregano to begin.

Sourdough bread

OPSO Mousakas

Mains soon follow – yellow fava spread with red onion and crips capers and the OPSO Mousakas which includes grilled eggplant, slowly braised beef, ragout, béchamel and potato crips – and we dip into different dishes exploring the flavours.

Fava

Dakos Salad

But what is the icing on the cake is the location; hit up the restaurant (the name of which is an ancient Greek word for a delectable morsel of food – a delicacy) when the weather permits and take a seat on the curved terrace to be mesmerised by the twinkling lights of the city skyline and wowed by the fountain shows from occur from 6pm onwards.

Inside Dolce & Gabbana’s Jungle Themed Runway Show for Spring 2020 at Milan Fashion Week

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana didn’t opt for a subtle approach with their inspiration for their Spring/Summer 2020 collection, and jungle attire was worn from head to toe equally matching the settings around it.

After D&G’s menswear runway for SS20 championed a laid-back explorer feel, it’s no surprise womenswear for the same season has followed in its footsteps.

Set in the Sicilian jungle, the theme was clear long before the collection came out, with exotic palm trees filling out the venue – the Metropol in Milan – and leopard-print carpets gracing the floors.

Opening the show for the 124 looks was a beige belt-and-button heavy look that was completely inspired by safari attire. Looks followed that work the hues, fabrics and design details into different cuts and shapes before further aspects of the jungle theme were explored.

Of course throughout the collection, there was animal print galore – from full-length tiger print trenches, a zebra print A-line dress to a sheer leopard print strap dress.

But the best of print didn’t even come from our mammal friends – nature-inspired prints ruled the jungle-themed runway this time around. There were pineapple motifs on mini skirts, Alani anthurium flowers on skirt suits and of course leafy greens throughout.

The collection at large sets out to evoke the feeling of summertime happiness, presenting fun and bold collection that should certainly sparks joy.

Milan Fashion Week Highlights: From Salvatore Ferragamo to Gucci

As Milan Fashion Week kicks off this September, we reflect on some of the runway highlights as the week rolls out.

Gucci

For his SS20 collection for fashion house Gucci, quirky Creative Director Alessandro Michele kickstarted thing with an opening that was bizarre, to say the least – models wearing all white in styles reminiscent of straight jackets were shrouded in red light. Later it would become aware that this was all theatrics; none of these items were to go on sale. As for the collection that will be hitting the shelves – graphic block colouring was teamed with unconventional tailoring and many garments even boast an equestrian feel, too.

Salvatore Ferragamo

Salvatore Ferragamo sees Creative Director Paul Andrew explore his fourth collection with the Italian fashion house for SS20. And settling into his role – a step up from his position as the brand’s Women’s Footwear Design Director – Andrew seems like he finally feels comfortable exploring some of the house’s staples from over the years, such as the Vara pump. Elsewhere the collection uses motifs and patterns from Florence’s Neptune Fountain, a heritage site the brand is currently funding restoration for. Designs were free and flowing, and colours came in the form of pale sky blues, khaki green and peachy-orange.

Giorgio Armani

After Emporio brought Air to fashion, Giorgio brought Earth. The second take on an element for Milan Fashion Week circa September 2019 came from the designer of the moment (well, of every moment really) as Giorgio Armani is set to receive his Outstanding Achievement Award this December. Prooving his worth one more time before accepting the gong, he presented a collection of moody teal blues, smokey greys and coal-black for a truly earthy feel. There were double-breasted suit jackets, strapless dresses teamed with trousers, silky tees tucked into flowing silky skirts and wet look blazer jackets worn with nothing underneath.

Etro

While high fashion has been reverting back to bohemian flair over the last few seasons, hippy style has always played a part in Etro’s identity, making this one of the best takes on the call-back we’ve seen. All the signatures –floaty shapes, ruffle details, maxi cuts and earthy hues – were there in full force. But a particular highlight that wasn’t so familiar was working a classic men’s shirt into this free-spirited vibe. Rather than formal, they were likewise loosened up to fit with Veronica Etro’s latest aesthetic.

Tod’s

For spring 2020, Tod’s has a vision of dressing the urban dwellers in an everyday wardrobe that is simple. Clean-cut yet smart and screaming ‘Made In Italy’ luxe all at once. Wearable pieces (both for the fashion devoted and the casual trend observer) called upon Italian classics such as light leather fabrics, a material that transforms the casual bomber jacket into a stylish finishing touch. The freshness continued with flowing culottes, asymmetrical day dresses and gently tailored items showed that simple styles can reign.

Emporio Armani

The branch of Giorgio Armani’s fashion umbrella that calls out to the younger crowd took the atmosphere that surrounds us all as inspiration for its Spring/Summer 2020 collection. The Emporio Armani show was titled ‘Air’ and the models walked the runway under a cloudy sky by daywear, a starry one by nightgowns. Ethereal, soft and floaty, pistachio greens and millenial pinks were teamed with grey-beige hybrids in designs that we’re all about clashing texture.

Moschino

It’s a world away from his The Price Is Right inspired collection that was rolled out earlier in the year, but Creative Director Jeremy Scott’s Picasso-influenced line for Spring/Summer takes on the same level of commitment, caricature and charisma. There was colour, there was pattern, and there were models wearing complete painting frames and guitars as dresses.

Alberta Ferretti

Alberta Ferretti’s Spring/Summer 2020 collection served as a dedication to women who use fashion as a way to stand out; the aim of the collection was to create a contemporary story that balances a carefree attitude with a love and admiration for the art of fashion. The runway models were adorned in petite capes detailed with embroidery, suede trousers, dyed denim hues and laidback sandals, and the colour palette featured burnt oranges, soft yellow and earthy beiges.

Prada

Opening the calendar event, Creative Director Miuccia Prada presented a collection for the season ahead in the city’s Fondazione that merged together iconic styles from the past to create an office-chic look that was classic in form but modern in detail. Think tailored jackets, knee-length skirts that came pencil shape or pleated, embroidered leather, sheer fabrics and graphic details that still somehow managed to remain delicate and soft.

A&E Reviews: Anantara Kihavah Maldives – The Stunning Resort Island Making Loyal Friends of First Time Vacationers

With daydream-like natural scenery as the setting for a range of incredible accommodation, adrenaline-inducing activities and hospitality excellence, Anantara Kihavah Maldives has it all.

There’s a certain kind of prestige and allure that is associated with the Maldives. Utter the two words that represent some thousand-something islands, and you’ll no doubt think of a celebrity and honeymoon-approved holiday destination, promising pure privacy and picturesque shores.

Mix that with the global reputation of Anantara – the hotel group born in 2001 that lives by the philosophy that “life is a journey” and which emphasises the natural beauty and cultural history of whichever location it builds upon – and a long weekend of unbeatable bliss is certainly on the cards.

Anantara Kihavah Island

After a four hour flight from Dubai, a seaplane from Male and a quick boat ride, we see the island that is exclusively the home of Anantara getting bigger as we get closer, the sound of bongo drums simultaneously growing louder.

Alighting from the cascading waters, we’re greeted by warm smiles as we make our way onto the island, shortly followed up by a fresh coconut baring the hydration we need after tackling the various modes of transport to reach our paradise. After being introduced to our villa hosts for our stay, we look ahead to the sandy paths, green canopies and beach villas and back to the clear blue waters and white sands assured we’ll be happy in our new home for the weekend.

Overwater villa

From dining with a difference to bucket list activities, here’s how Anantara Kihavah Maldives seduces the first-time vacationers into loyal friends of the stunning resort.

EXCLUSIVE ACCOMMODATION

When we arrive at the beach villas – the overwater villas being the other key option – we feel smug with the accommodation we’ve been granted. Walking through arched wooden doors that tower above us into our private villa, we’re charmed by the terrace area with sunloungers immersed into a private pool, a hanging swing big enough for two to laze upon and of course a table and chairs to talk the evening away in. A path that leads directly to the beach in a matter of seconds is the only break from the green encave that promises privacy for the villa’s inhabitants – that’s excluding minuscule geckos that scurry across the grounds by day and bats that fly overhead by night.

Beach and pool villa

Inside, there’s everything you would expect from a luxury resort and then some – from an irresistibly comfy bed to coffee machines to keep you going and a TV with Bluetooth technology for playing your favourite songs. A shelf lined with novels and travel books and a sketchpad (should the surrounding beauty spark your creative side) is a nice extra touch, too.

Walking past the boudoir for all our getting-ready needs, the back of the villa opens onto a breathtaking outside bathroom. There’s a waterfall shower for a whole new kind of clean feeling and a doubled-sized tub surrounded by water for a soak like no other. Safe to say we’ll be more than catered for in our abode during our stay.

Pool villa’s outside bathroom

DINING DESTINATIONS

While for foodies, the cuisine alone at Anantara Kihavah Maldives is enough to be excited by (fresh seafood devotees, rejoice!) it’s the experience of dining at the many different restaurants the resort has to offer that takes it from satisfying to spectacular.

Living up to its reputation as a destination for newlywed couples, we tuck in on the night of our arrival to a private candlelit meal on the beach – the Dine By Design experience. As if the crashing waves and starlight sky (an unfamiliar sight for any city-dweller) wasn’t enough, the heart-shaped tables enclosed by a sand-made sofa and candle lanterns hanging from branches should ensure the ambience is suitably romantic.

Dine by Design experience

Expect the crème de la crème with steak and lobster, while more earthy alternatives are easily available for those with plant-based preferences – and this is the consensus across all dining establishments within the resort.

Lunch the following day is served at SEA – the underwater restaurant that has guests from neighbouring islands making the journey over. We’re lucky enough to see the larger sea life such as baby sharks and turtles make an appearance as we dine, each one peacefully gliding past the colourful schools of fish that surround the circular restaurant, reversing the roles of your average fishbowl. We learn about the resort’s conservation efforts as we enjoy the menu made up of both Maldivian and international cuisine.

SEA restaurant at Anantara Kihavah

We’re also lucky enough to get a sneak peek of the menu that will be on offer at Spice, another restaurant due to open on the island in Autumn 2019. Indian curries and Thai salads are full of flavour and blended together perfectly for a meal bursting with exotic tastes.

Breakfast each day is served at Plates, which is home to a generous buffet of traditional morning meals from across the world and a selection of fresh-to-order options too. Mornings with strong coffee, freshly squeezed juices and sweet pastries overlooking crystal blue waters is a fine way to start the day in our books.

SKY restaurant at sunset

While these aren’t our only meals consumed, some of our other experiences are more about the activity than the food itself…

ISLAND ACTIVITIES

Doesn’t an island that takes approximately 20 minutes to walk around get, well, boring after a few days? This is exactly where you might underestimate Anantara Kihavah Maldives.

Beachfront art classes

Whether incorporating it into your daily meals or taking out to the waters to seek adventure, there’s a long list of ways to fill your time so that its speeds by almost too fast.

Starsign followers and physics enthusiasts, ensure you book in for a meal at SKY. We embark on a private stargazing meal of an evening and as we tuck into our savoury options, we lean back to look into the night’s sky and learn about our solar system and beyond thanks to the expert astrologist talking us through the burning balls of fire lightyears away.

Before we’re granted our sweet treats, we look into one of the world’s largest telescopes to see stars and the moon like never before. A truly unforgettable experience.

Aerial yoga session

And if stars are your thing, then an evening at the Cinema Under The Stars is a must too. Pick from a considerable selection of films as you enjoy snacks and sliders in the great outdoors.

By day, activities include snorkelling in the clear waters amongst the exotic sea life, heading out into deeper territories to swim with manta rays, getting onto the waters with jet skis, paddleboards or kayaks and looking down upon the glistening blue from a parasail as you feel the wind in your hair.

Manta ray snorkelling

For more land-based activities for the sea shy, book in for art classes on the beach with the island’s resident artist, use your assigned villa bike to cycle the island and stop by the organic garden or start the day with aerial yoga on the beach to align yourself with the island’s zen.

SPA HAVEN

We’re not sure about you, but it’s hardly a holiday without a spa to unwind within, in our opinion. Thankfully, this gorgeous resort is far from lacking.

Anantara Kihavah spa

And whether you head to the spa itself for a treatment (like we do) or opt for an in-room option (like we also do) you’re in for a, well, treat.  While the traditional spa facilities are limited (for now, major expansion is on the way) to a steam room, it’s the little details in the gorgeous relaxation hub that wins us over; the organic herb display ready to be used as beauty ingredients, the rest area overlooking the ocean and the glass feature underneath the massage beds so guests can gaze out onto the corals as they feel their stresses melt away.

On-site, we try the ELEMIS Superfood Pro-Radiance to energise and detoxify our dull, stressed city skin and the DNA testing. The latter involves scanning a few strands of hair to receive a full report on areas of improvement in our health, diet and lifestyle at large in a matter of 20 minutes – from minerals that we’re lacking to foods that we’re better off avoiding.

Aerial view of beach pool villas

And then there are the in-room treatments. After returning from our stargazing meal, our heads are further propelled into the clouds as we enjoy an hour-long Signature Massage in the great outdoors before moving into the rose-petal adorned bathtub that is filled with milky coconut essence and lit by candlelight. The perfect way to ensure an unbeatable night’s sleep.

Upon arriving at Anantara Kihavah Maldives, we’re told some of the guests plan to come for a week or so, and end up staying at the resort for months on end. While we weren’t sure how we’d hold up for more than a week on a tiny island upon arrival, we have greater sympathy (and frankly jealously) for those month-long dwellers by the time we woefully leave.

A&E Recommends… Portguese Dining at Tasca By José Avillez

If you’re looking for cuisine with Portuguese flair in Dubai, then head over to the Mandarin Oriental to dine at Tasca by José Avillez.

One of the many privileges of living in Dubai includes access to so many amazing and varied world cuisines – incredible Vietmenamse restaurants, authentic Emirati eateries, hearty Greek options and wonderful Indian offerings (even British-inspired Indian curries for the expats who can’t quite let go) and so on.

But one cuisine that doesn’t seem to be dotted around everywhere you go (it’s certainly about, just not in abundance) is Portuguese food – especially when we’re taking fine dining.

Skyline views from Tasca

Well, next time the urge for some piri piri or fresh seafood comes upon you, book into Tasca by José Avillez of an evening.

Based within luxury hotel Mandarin Oriental – located on Dubai’s Jumeirah Beach Road – the restaurant boasts stunning skyline views of Downtown Dubai to one side and soothing beach views from the other as well as a mouthwatering menu.

Grilled scarlet shrimp

The eatery is headed up by José Avillez – the Lisbon-born chef who is on a mission to promote Portuguese gastronomy across the globe, bringing together the traditions of his motherland with experimental and investive twists picked up along his travels.

To start, the dinner menu boasts delights such as Algarve prawns ceviche, foie gras and tempura avocado – the last being a particular favourite, the dish being served with dehydrated piri piri, coriander sprouts, lime and lemon.

Bacalhau a gomes de sa

While starters are light bites, mains are made for sharing. Stars of the show include cured and marinated seabass served with prawn olive oil and avocado, half a blue lobster from Portugal grilled with Tasca sauce, citrus and truffle and josper-roasted lamb shank with mint, red peppers, potatoes and broccolini – the final being our main of choice.

Vegetarians can delight in offerings such as roasted eggplant with cilantro, garlic, mint and pomegranate yoghurt and Portuguese salad made up of lettuce, tomato, onion, cilantro and vinaigrette.

Tasca terrace

Naturally, the only way to seal the meal is with a traditional Portuguese custard tart.

Team the delectable menu with the moody yet warm ambience and professional yet friendly service, and you can hardly go wrong with an evening out at Tasca.

Giorgio Armani to Be Granted the Outstanding Achievement Award at the Fashion Awards This December

Fashion legend Giorgio Armani is finally getting acknowledgement for his contributions to his industry with a prestigious gong from The British Fashion Council.

Since launching his eponymous label in 1975, Giorgio Armani’s contribution to fashion has been nothing short of genius.

The iconic Italian designer – under whose name umbrella brands such as Emporio Armani and Armani Prive also thrive – has been admired by up-and-coming designers for decades for his perfect marriage of creative innovation and marketing and business savvy.

It’s the reason why his brand has never really fallen shy of being one of the most successful and recognisable names of high fashion.

So it sounds only right that the 85-year-old is finally getting rewarded for his contributions to the fashion industry, further cementing his already almost unshakeable position within it.

Ahead of the award ceremony on December 2nd this year, The British Fashion Councils’ CBE Caroline Rush said: “We are thrilled to be honouring Giorgio Armani with the Outstanding Achievement Award. A&E Interviews… Maha and Nada Safa, Founders of Pastel Cakes

After having so much fun making cakes for their own children’s birthday parties, Lebanese twin sisters Nada and Maha Safa turned their hobby into a full-time career – and the outcome has been sweet.

Ever since they were little, identical twin sisters Maha and Nada Safa have been fascinated with the world of baking. The twosome would often watch their mother mixing up miracles in the kitchen.

But it wasn’t until 2016 that the now Dubai-based siblings had the idea to turn their lifelong passion into a source of income. Since then, Pastel Cakes has whipped up and sent out thousands of cakes across the region, catering to all kinds of dietary needs – think vegan, keto and gluten-free sweet treats.

Speaking to A&E, the duo chat through their business to date and plans for the future.

Tell us about how the idea for Pastel Cakes came about?

It all started when we were planning our kids’ birthdays. We realised that we have pushed everything and focused on the cake and planning the rest accordingly. Ever since then we were hooked!

Why did you pick the time you did to open a bakery?

It was right after those birthdays. We both made such a good team with each one of us looking after the cake and the other would focus on the designs and details. That’s when it hit us that we could turn this passion into a business.

What inspired your love of baking?

We used to look forward to watching our mother bake a new cake every weekend. We would help her in the kitchen and we learned from watching her every move. Her passion for baking had resonated with us growing up.

How does running a successful business coincide with family life?

It’s quite challenging to have the right balance between both, however, we always try to bring the fun element to it. We love experimenting with our kids and they love spending time in the kitchen.

What has been one of the biggest struggles when it comes to getting the business up and running?

Having to wear all the hats can be challenging in maintaining a business, however, it’s a learning process and we love what we do and so it doesn’t make it a struggle.

And one of your proudest achievements to date?

Being mothers is our proudest achievement.

How do come up with new recipes?

We always have to see what’s out there before we come up with any recipe. And we are always experimenting and researching. And because we both love travelling, we get to be exposed to so many new concepts and recipes. And we get inspired!

You make vegan and keto cakes – why was it important to you to cater to a variety of dietary needs?

We always paid attention to what our clients ask for. And we were aware that our clientele have a range of different dietary requirements and we wanted to accommodate most of them.

What’s your favourite ever cake flavour? And what would your dream cake look like?

Chocolate Hazelnut Cake and the Skinny Carrot Cake are our favourites! Since we both love nature, our dream cake would be earthy and rustic.

What’s the ultimate goal with your business?

Our goal is to be the best leading dessert company providing the best customer experience and finest quality.

And what do you enjoy most about your job?

We love the creativity and having to be part of our clients’ celebrations.

Do you have a motto in work and life?

Love what you do! Don’t let any challenges stop you from pursuing what you love! And fill your life with lots of laughter.

The Best Of British: Designer Matthew Williamson Collaborates with Newby Teas on a Stylish Limited Edition Collection

Award-winning British designer Matthew Williamson has tapped into his, well, Britishness by working with London-born company Newby Teas on a new collection.

When it comes to quintessentially British, there are often two things that spring to mind; afternoon teas served with scones and cucumber sandwiches, and a sophisticated sense of dress that is often personified by the likes of Kate Middleton.

Well, these equally regal British ideals have come together as designer Matthew Williamson – one of the Duchess of Cambridge’s go-to designers who is known for his use of kaleidoscopic colour, intricate patterns and designs inspired by nature and travel – has teamed up with Newby Teas to create his own collection.

Matthew Williamson has teamed up with Newby Teas on a first-of-its-kind project

His partnership with the luxury teahouse that was born in London in 2001 is the first of its kind and sees Williamson design a limited edition collection of tea caddies – a small container within which fine teas are to be stored, of course.

Three bespoke tea leaf blends will be for sale in the range of eye-catching packaging that will no-doubt become a permanent feature of anybody’s tea collection. The blends include Maharaja’s Breakfast, Exotic Earl Grey and Jasmine Rose Garden.

The first is a blend of rich-flavoured, golden-tipped Assam black tea balanced with a taste of malt and subtle sweet notes, the second is a black tea blend with subtle bergamot oil and spicy safflower top notes and the last a green tea blend that boasts a honeyed aroma with floral notes of jasmine and rose.

But while tea drinking might often be associated with the British, Williamson took to the roots of where these unique leaves are grown and blends created when getting to work.

When creating the collection, Williamson – who has been a must-know name in the industry for his clothing and interior designs since his debut at London Fashion Week in 1997 – took his inspiration from the Rajasthan region of India. Prints were based on original watercolours chosen because of their reflection of the heritage surrounding a key element of each blend.

On the project, Williamson said: “India is my all-time favourite destination. I’ve been over 40 times; I took my first trip when I was 18 and fell in love straight away. It’s long provided endless inspiration for my work and I’m forever fascinated by the colours, its vibrancy, diversity and craftsmanship.

“I couldn’t have done this collection without paying homage to one of the birthplaces of tea and my forever home-from-home.”

The Rajasthan iconography including elaborately decorated elephants incorporated in the caddy design recalls the palatial grandeur of the Maharaja

While Aneta Aslakhanova – Global Marketing Director of Newby Teas – added: “We are very proud of this collaboration. As a luxury tea brand, we are always looking to create products that are exceptional in terms of quality but also aesthetically attractive.

“Matthew Williamson was the designer of choice for this collaboration, the ‘alchemist’ of colour and nature, his designs inspire people all over the world. The result of this collaboration is, in our view, a stunning collection which evokes all senses. Together with Matthew, we have created bespoke blends, the classic trio of all-time favourites with a Matthew Williamson twist.”
