Alexander McQueen Reveals An SS24 Collection Inspired by Female Icons

Renowned Polish artist Magdalena Abakanowicz and the late British Queen Elizabeth I were two key inspirations for the latest Alexander McQueen collection.

Discussing why she chose Abakanowicz, Sarah Burton, the house’s Creative Director explained that it was due to her role as “ a transgressive and powerfully creative artist who refused ever to compromise her vision.”

Meanwhile, the female anatomy also played an integral role in Burton’s inspiration for the show.

The collection marks the last by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, which she dedicated to her great friend and founder of the house. “The show is dedicated to the memory of Lee Alexander McQueen, whose wish was always to empower women, and to the passion, talent and loyalty of my team,” she said.

Other British icons who played a role in her final collection for the house include Naomi Campbell – who closed the show in a silver beaded dress and David Bowie – whose song “Heroes” played out during the event.

For her final show, Burton also embraced the current fashion week trend of using women beyond size zero models to walk the runway.

Plus-sized models made an appearance, alongside midsized women and even a pregnant woman walked the show. The message seemed to be that this was a collection for many, not just the few.
