Dior’s Garden Fantasy Ball

It was the return of romance at Christian Dior. Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri’s Haute Couture Spring 2017 debut invited the audience to a garden fantasy ball. Models glided along a grass-covered runway at the Musee Rodin in Paris in fairytale-inspired gowns. It was a change of setting from wintery Paris to a luscious spring wonderland.

There were masks and mazes, flower embroidery adorned the tulle and organza dresses. Princess-style gowns came in ruffled layered styles or with lace decorations. Some dresses strapless, others with spaghetti straps, as did a variety of tarot symbols as well as stars. Dior’s signature Bar jackets were re-invented as capes with hoods, worn with lace tops and pleated skirts -the theme was romantic, but just a single pair of trousers was shown as part of a military inspired suit.

The highlight was a selection of white dresses before moving onto dream-like frocks in pink, mauve, grey and blue for the evening. But there was also a selection of dark velvet and metallic coloured evening gowns. Chiuri said: “I think that we have to maintain this dreaming idea of couture but at the same time I don’t want to lose the wearable idea.”

Each look was accessorised with black see-through masks, sometimes formed as butterflies, as well as feather headdresses. The natural elements of the headpieces were echoed in the jewellery – models wore necklaces embellished with butterflies or flowers.
