It looks like woman in sassy suits are back in full swing. The chic trouser suit can go far back as the 60s with Brigette Bardot shopping in Via Margutta in Rome in 1961 wearing a sleek chic version. Then style icon Bianca Jagger loved her suits so much she even wore a skirt suit for her wedding day to Mick Jagger in 1971; and who could forget Grace Jones’s iconic sculpted jacket with dagger lapels on the album Nightclubbing.
The aura of the suit made a powerful come back in the 80s when women were power dressing. This was a time when the power suit was designed to ignore a woman’s shape so it didn’t hinder her mobility as she worked her way up the corporate ladder. Actress Diane Keaton was a prime example of this in the 1987 film Baby Boom. A year later, Sigourney Weaver adopted the look in the hit film Working Girl, where she played one of the few women in a huge brokerage. Melanie Griffith was even nominated for an Oscar as her secretary, Tess, who morphed from big-haired Staten Island secretary to conservatively dressed broker when she assumed her boss’s wardrobe.
However, the power suit has received a modern makeover. Nowadays, celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett, Kate Moss, Cara Delevingne, Emma Watson and Victoria Beckham, amongst many others, have all worn their own version of a sexy suit. Last week at the Cannes Film Festival, the throwback made a striking red carpet cameo thanks to the likes of actress Susan Sarandon, supermodel Doutzen Kroes and Kirsten Dunst.
