Fatema Al Fardan, the creative director and owner of Fatema Fardan Designs is a UAE national. She graduated from the American Intercontinental University in London with a First Degree Honours in Fashion Design and Marketing, and took short courses at Central Saint Martins and at the London College of Fashion. She also interned with noted designers before returning to the UAE to pursue her passion and create the namesake label.

The Emirati designer’s expertise lies in modern garment construction, pattern-cutting, custom fabrics and intricate embroidery that reflect deep-rooted inspirations. Her current SS16 collection is called Remembrance of the Water. It takes inspiration from the rich culture and heritage of her homeland, and in particular the history and beauty of pearls.

Fardan explained: “I want to pay homage to all those souls who ventured into the sea, day after day, for their families, for their country, and for their heritage.” Fardan took to the beauty of pearls and the abyss of the Arabian Gulf for the collection’s subdued palette. White pearl, ocean blue, black pearl and sandy grey are splashed on to smooth silk, sheer and textured fabrics and watercolour-printed textiles.

Pearl divers, diving ropes, strings and fishnets are also a source of inspiration. Fardan created a modern interpretation composed of tailored separates, flared skirts, dresses, culottes and jumpsuits with knotted detailing, pearl button closures and reimagined silhouettes. Each piece is rightly a standout, perfectly capturing the Fatema Fardan ethos – simple, elegant, contemporary.
