Hermès Heritage In Motion: A Celebration of Movement At The National Museum Of Qatar

From the 16th of October to the 9th of November, the National Museum of Qatar in Doha will host the highly anticipated “Hermès Heritage In Motion” exhibition.

This event marks the third and final chapter in the esteemed Hermès Heritage exhibition series, following the success of “Once Upon a Bag” in 2022 and “Harnessing the Roots” in 2023, both held at the same iconic venue.

The Hermès Heritage cycle explores the illustrious history of the luxury house, founded in 1837 by Thierry Hermès. This exhibition delves into the brand’s rich narrative, highlighting its iconic themes, colours, and objects while tracing the lineage of its artisans and creators—from its origins as a harness-maker and saddler to its contemporary status as a global luxury powerhouse.

The “In Motion” chapter showcases a stunning array of objects that embody the spirit of exploration and movement. Hermès emerged at a pivotal moment in history when modern life began to quicken, reflecting society’s desire for ease and mobility. Whether travelling on foot, horseback, or via car, bicycle, or even aircraft, Hermès creations are characterized by their lightness, elegance, and ingenious design.

Among the exhibition’s treasures are pieces from the Émile Hermès collection, the archives, and contemporary works. Notably, visitors will encounter the very first Hermès scarf, adorned with concentric circles of horse-drawn carriages inspired by the Jeu des omnibus et dames blanches game. The exhibition also features the Postilion’s riding boots, reminiscent of the mythical seven-league boots, and the gracefully designed Flâneur d’Hermès bicycle.

Highlighting the theme of travel through time, the exhibition presents the Bolide picnic bag, inspired by the Sac pour l’Auto created by Hermès in the 1920s, alongside ingenious mechanisms such as the Pippa writing desk, which elegantly transforms from a useful tool to a hidden treasure when closed. Additionally, the cane picnic basket conceals a complete set of cutlery, while the Inversables—two columns of glasses mounted on mobile rings—are designed to accompany guests aboard a yacht or ocean liner, ensuring they remain steady even amidst the waves.

Curated by Bruno Gaudichon, director of “La Piscine” Museum of Art and Industry in Roubaix, and exhibition designer Laurence Fontaine, “Hermès Heritage In Motion” charts an exhilarating course that celebrates the timeless journey of movement and luxury.

This exceptional exhibition promises to captivate attendees, offering a rare glimpse into the world of Hermès and its enduring legacy of craftsmanship and elegance. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience this unique celebration of heritage and innovation at the National Museum of Qatar this October.
