New hotels, destination dining and easier access from the UAE are transforming Egypt’s Mediterranean coastline into one of the region’s most talked-about summer escapes.
For generations of Egyptians, the North Coast has been synonymous with summer. Known locally as Sahel, this stretch of Mediterranean coastline offers powder-soft beaches, remarkably clear turquoise water and a welcome escape from the intensity of Cairo. Yet while its appeal is nothing new, international travellers are now turning their eyes to one of Egypt’s best-kept secrets.
Why Now?
Until recently, much of the North Coast revolved around private holiday homes and gated residential communities. Today, ambitious hospitality projects are giving visitors more ways to experience the destination without owning or renting a villa.
Marassi remains one of its most established luxury enclaves, while Hacienda White, New Alamein and Ras El Hekma have developed their own identities. Each has become a small summer universe, complete with restaurants, shops, entertainment, and beach clubs.

According to IHG’s announced pipeline, InterContinental North Coast Direction White is scheduled to open in Ras El Hekma in September 2026, followed later in the year by the 300-room voco North Coast at DOSE. Together, these projects signal the coast’s evolution from a largely domestic summer retreat into an internationally recognised Mediterranean destination.

The journey takes around four hours, with the 2026 route operating between June 20 and September 6. Frequencies vary throughout the season, so early booking is recommended.
When to Visit
The main season runs from June until early September, with July and August bringing the greatest energy and largest crowds. Those seeking a calmer experience should consider visiting in June or early September, when the weather remains warm but beaches and restaurants are generally less busy.
