ZIMMERMANN’s Cruise 2027 collection draws inspiration from Australia’s historic victory in the 1983 America’s Cup to explore the tension between sporting utility and high-octane glamour.

Creative director Nicky Zimmermann revisits the moment when Australia II defeated the American team, ending 132 years of US dominance in the prestigious sailing competition. The victory, which captured the nation’s imagination, informs a collection built around contrasts: outsiders and establishment, grit and opulence, and practicality and elegance.

“One of my most vivid memories as a kid was watching Australia II win the 1983 America’s Cup,” says Zimmermann. “Like a good film, the story had it all: the cheeky upstart against the establishment, and the ultimate come-from-behind victory to win a race that one country had dominated for 132 years.” Swipe through for five of the standout looks from the collection.
The collection translates the visual language of yacht racing into a wardrobe that balances technical references with fluid, expressive silhouettes. A photorealistic sail print on silk chiffon establishes the maritime mood, while cotton drill rompers and vests, nautical-rope pulls and fabrics inspired by yacht-racing flags introduce more utilitarian elements.

Movement is central to the designs. Billowing silk gowns evoke spinnaker sails catching the wind, while delicate lace panels flutter with each step. Denim is reimagined in sculptural forms, including a corset-bodice top and cascading asymmetric skirt. Elsewhere, an angular poplin blouse offsets the drama of jean trousers finished with a skirt overlay.
As day gives way to evening, the collection shifts towards a more irreverent interpretation of occasionwear. Continuing the previous season’s exploration of rule breakers and traditional menswear, a lavender strapless jumpsuit and an apricot shorts suit with lace underpinnings soften the formality of classic tailoring. Striped panel lace dresses bring further movement, while fluid silk jersey separates contrast with paisley-print silk Duchess satin.

Texture and colour reinforce the collection’s dualities. Airy lace and plush shearling sit alongside a palette that moves from nautical blue, cream and red into pastel shades, earthy tones and flashes of crimson.
Accessories extend the sailing references through boat-style mules, striped canvas-and-leather barrel bags, scarf-wrapped necklaces and medallion brooches. Basketweave leather lends a lighter finish to classic loafers and bags, including the Cloud 91 silhouette, while satin mules with nautical hardware introduce a final note of effortless decadence.
For ZIMMERMANN, Cruise 2027 transforms a defining moment in Australian sporting history into a celebration of audacity, movement and unconventional glamour.
