Label to watch: Sies Marjan

Designer Sander Lak’s debut collection of his brand, Sies Marjan, was presented during the  Fall 2016 shows in New York. It has already been worn by Beyoncé and picked up by top retailers: Barneys New York and MatchesFashion.com. The look is a fresher youthful version of Dries Van Noten, which is where Lak previously worked.

He said his debut collection was indebted, in part, to the cargo trousers–wearing cool chicks he remembers admiring back in the ’90s. Among that first collection’s 36 looks, there managed to be a bit of something for everyone. The show started with blossom-printed fabric cut on the bias into a sleek yet relaxed pencil dress with a twisted opening under the bust, a couture technique. There were cool pulled-off-the-shoulder pieces, bright colours like bold yellow, eye-catching prints, angora coats and a no-nonsense optic-white suit. We particularly loved Lak’s washed gazar cargo skirt with painterly embroidery and his sweatshirt-like tops blossoming asymmetrical ruffles.
