NEW YORK FASHION WEEK AW17: JASON WU

Jason Wu has been in the spotlight ever since he put on his first show fresh out of design school in New York. His AW17 collection marked his 10th anniversary, and he showcased how much he has grown during his time in the business.

When he first started out, his main focus was party dresses, filled with fantasy and a self-confessed naiveté. He has begun to work tailoring into his collections, showing that over time he has evolved into dressing his woman for all occasions.

He covered most aspects of his customers’ wardrobe throughout the show. He started casually, with matching cotton tops and trousers embroidered with a tonal dot pattern. Sweaters with matching trousers or skirts had cut-out details at the shoulder or draped off the shoulder altogether.

He touched on more formal elements with a smart tailored grey suit in a patterned wool and a bright red plunging wool coat that flared from the waist in a feminine yet sleek silhouette. Girly printed dresses appeared in soft light layers with delicate spaghetti straps.

However, he did not turn his back on his signature love of eveningwear. Rich velvet dresses and jumpsuits slinked down the catwalk in embellished midnight black and a striking mustard gold colour. Devoré velvet in pink-red and khaki green added luxurious texture to other evening tops and dresses. There was an asymmetry to the majority of looks that drew the eye and kept things from looking too mature, as can often happen with velvet fabrications. Overall it was a more mature collection but still showed the Jason Wu flair that his dedicated customers love and expect.
