The Oscars 2017: a record breaking night

The 89th Academy Awards took place last night at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. As usual, much fuss was made over what the star-studded attendees were wearing on the red carpet; click here for our picks of the best dressed men and best dressed women of the night. After the guests ran the gauntlet of photographers outside the venue, the show could begin, and it was a record breaking affair.

Justin Timberlake kicked things off with an energetic performance that started things off on the right note and got the crowd going.

La La Land had a huge 14 nominations and was a big winner on the night, taking home five of the main awards, including Best Cinematography, Best Directing and Best Music (for an Original Screenplay). Emma Stone also picked up the Oscar for Best Actress for her role as Mia in the film.

Manchester by the Sea also was a winner on the night, picking up the award for Best Writing (Original Screenplay) and Casey Affleck picked up the Best Actor award for his role in the film.

The Best Supporting Actor/Actress category was record-breaking. Mahershala Ali became the first Muslim actor to receive an Oscar for his role in Moonlight where he plays a tender father figure to a lost young man. Viola Davis also became the first black person to receive the triple crown of acting – winning an Oscar, Emmy and Tony – for her supporting actress role in Fences.

The most controversial moment of the night came when the award for Best Picture was announced incorrectly as La La Land. Members of the production all made their way up to the stage and thank yous were started before the film’s producer Jordan Horowitz interrupted the celebrations to make the correction that it was, in fact, Moonlight that had won the accolade. The stage fell silent before shocked members of the Moonlight crew made their way up to collect what was rightfully theirs.
