This means the movies you actually loved and paid money to see will be in with a chance to win a ‘popular choice’ Oscar.

Adding a public vote aspect to the proceedings will shine a light on films that impacted a wide audience of movie goers with the most watched screenings getting recognised. Many are calling it the ‘Black Panther effect’ which reportedly became the third movie in history to reach $700 million in United States domestic box office, and yet did not make the Academy’s list.

On their Twitter page, they also announced that from 2020, the ceremony will have an earlier air date set for February 9, rather than the end of the month. Looks like other movie awards around that time might have to shift.

The ceremony will also be shorter and take three hours, with further plans to make it ‘more globally accessible’.
