Abu Dhabi’s New Home for the Performing Arts Signals the Next Chapter in the Emirate’s Cultural Story

Abu Dhabi’s cultural landscape is set to reach another milestone with the announcement of Dar al Funoon Abu Dhabi (House of the Arts), a landmark performing arts institution that will become a permanent home for opera, ballet, theatre and live performance when it opens in 2030.

Located on Saadiyat Island alongside Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Zayed National Museum, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and the upcoming Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, the new venue further cements the emirate’s position as one of the world’s leading cultural destinations.

Designed by the late Frank Gehry, in what will be his final architectural work, the striking building has been conceived as a living expression of movement and performance. Its sculptural, flowing form and transparent façade are intended to blur the boundaries between artists and audiences, reflecting Abu Dhabi’s commitment to cultural exchange and accessibility.

Beyond its remarkable architecture, Dar al Funoon will play a central role in shaping the city’s creative future. The institution will host year-round programming, with 365 days of performances spanning opera, ballet, theatre and jazz, alongside artist residencies, international collaborations and touring productions. Designed to accommodate everything from intimate performances to large-scale productions, the venue will feature a 2,000-seat performance hall, a 3,500-seat open-air amphitheatre, a studio theatre and a dedicated jazz venue.

The announcement reflects Abu Dhabi’s long-term investment in culture as a driver of economic and social development. As the emirate continues to expand its world-class collection of museums and cultural institutions, Dar al Funoon adds a new dimension by placing the performing arts at the heart of its vision.

This new landmark represents an investment in creativity, talent and cultural dialogue, reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s ambition to become a global capital for the arts for generations to come.
