March 31st, 2022. Expo 2020 Dubai closes its doors for the final time with an extravagant closing ceremony.
On March 31st 2022 Expo 2020 Dubai closed its doors for the final time, marking the end of the six-month global event and the end of a key moment in the nation’s history, but also, the beginning of a new chapter.
Hailed as one of the most successful Expos of all time, Expo 2020. Dubai has attracted over 20 million visitors from around the world over the past six months. Despite the setbacks and delays from the global pandemic, Dubai truly did put on “The World’s Greatest Show” and it has inspired a generation.
From the introduction of new sustainable practices in the region, to the discovery of innovations and new technologies, to the coming together of almost 200 nations under one roof, Expo 2020 Dubai has truly been a once in a lifetime event.
On stage, Her Excellency Reem Bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director General of Expo 2020 Dubai said farewell to the event alongside His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Member of the Cabinet and the Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence. The two took to the stage to pass the BIE flag onto His Excellency Wakamiya Kenji, Minister for the 2025 World Expo in Osaka, Japan and His Excellency Hirofumi Yoshimura (R) Governor of Osaka, Japan. Osaka will host the upcoming Expo in 2025.
A superstar lineup was invited to close the show in a spectacular ceremony on its final evening. Music performances came from Christina Aguilera, Norah Johns, Yo-Yo Ma and DJ Tiesto, as well as a host of musical acts throughout the evening. The event closed with a spectacular fireworks display as the curtain closed on the last moments of the event. As the doors closed, Her Excellency Reem Bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy was one of the last to leave as she did a final walk through the Sustainability Portal.
Now as the Expo 2020 site begins its transformation into District 2020 we see not the end of an era, but the beginning of a new journey, building on the lessons that have been learnt and the messages that have been shared over the past six months.
