In a landmark event, Sotheby’s is poised to stage its first-ever auction in Saudi Arabia, signalling a milestone in the Kingdom’s rapidly evolving cultural landscape.

The prestigious event, titled Origins, will be held in Diriyah – a UNESCO World Heritage site and the birthplace of the Saudi state close to the capital of Riyadh.

Set for the 8th of February 2025, this inaugural auction will showcase an exclusive range of art and luxury items, including rare pieces by celebrated Saudi and international artists, as well as an opulent selection of jewelry, watches, and collectibles.

The auction will unfold in Diriyah’s historic setting, where the ambience of ancient tradition meets modern elegance. The event will feature a two-part evening auction, and from the 1st to the 8th of February the artworks and luxury items will be on display for the public, offering visitors a chance to view these treasures up close.

“This is a dynamic time for culture in Saudi Arabia,” said Charles F. Stewart, CEO of Sotheby’s, in an announcement underscoring the significance of the event. “As we inaugurate our presence in Riyadh, we’re delighted to deepen our commitment to the Kingdom’s burgeoning art scene, with this inaugural auction as an embodiment of our dedication to cultural enrichment.” Stewart’s comments echo Sotheby’s ongoing involvement in the Gulf’s cultural ecosystem, where the company has actively supported events like Saudi Arabia’s first Contemporary Art Biennale and the Islamic Arts Biennale in Jeddah.

The event aligns with Saudi Vision 2030’s goal of transforming the Kingdom into a global cultural destination. In recent years, Diriyah has welcomed high-profile events while prioritizing conservation and heritage. According to Jerry Inzerillo, CEO of Diriyah Company, “We are honoured to host Sotheby’s first international auction in Saudi Arabia in a place that celebrates centuries of cultural excellence.”

Known for curating memorable auction experiences, Sotheby’s is expected to bring its signature blend of luxury and artistry to Saudi Arabia’s doorstep. The Origins auction will span a variety of categories, spotlighting Middle Eastern and international fine art, as well as rare collectables – from sports memorabilia and designer handbags to classic cars.

As with other Sotheby’s auctions, the Origins event will offer multiple avenues for participation, including in-person bidding at Diriyah, online access through Sotheby’s platform, and telephone bids supported by Sotheby’s representatives. The auction is expected to attract a distinguished audience of art collectors, luxury aficionados, and cultural enthusiasts from across the region and beyond.

Following years of successful engagement in the Gulf, Sotheby’s has officially incorporated in Saudi Arabia and is opening an office in Riyadh’s iconic Al Faisaliah Tower. The firm’s expanded presence will facilitate even greater involvement in the regional art and luxury markets and reinforce its dedication to fostering the Gulf’s creative community. In recent years, Sotheby’s has also contributed to cultural education in the Kingdom, offering talks, workshops, and exhibitions to promote art appreciation.

The Origins auction will serve as a celebration of both the Kingdom’s vibrant heritage and Sotheby’s enduring legacy in the art world, with Diriyah offering a backdrop that marries history and modernity. As Sotheby’s continues to build its presence in Saudi Arabia, this auction promises to be the first of many such cultural collaborations.
