Six must-visits for 2016

2015 is so over, don’t you know? It’s time to get planning for 2016 – and most importantly where you’ll be spending your down time.

Cuba
With diplomatic relations having thawed between Cuba and the US and a more relaxed approach to private ownership, now is the time to visit the Communist island – before it changes. Think 50s muscle cars, faded grandeur and plenty of history. Head to Havana for salsa and romance or into the middle of the island for hiking and adventures.

Ireland
On several people’s lists for 2016 Ireland might not be able to guarantee warm and dry weather but it’s chock full of ancient treasure and traditions. It linked together various trails and scenic routes to create the Wild Atlantic Way up the west coast in 2014, and now it’s undertaking the same idea for the ‘Ancient East’ coast. Fly into Dublin, hire a car and let the rolling hills and magical light embrace you.

Rio de Janeiro
Brazil’s party city has to be on the list for next year as it’s hosting the 2016 Olympics (and Paralympics) in August. Expect multi-coloured, festivity all year round from Mardi Gras in the Spring into the build up of hosting 10,000 athletes and world’s cameras. If you’re looking for one of the best atmospheres, then Rio next year is where to head to.

Great Barrier Reef
Expect to be blown away by David Attenborough’s new series focusing on the Great Barrier Reef next year. It took him a year to film it. This Australian natural wonder is often under threat, so show your support and visit it in an environmentally friendly way.

Miami
America’s beach party city is stepping out the bikini shadows with a huge range of new openings. From a new design district, home to luxury shopping, art galleries to luxury eco-friendly hotels – now’s the time to give Miami a second look. Don’t forget to book into Casa Claridges or Faena hotel, with suites designed by director Baz Luhrmann.

Lisbon
If you didn’t get to Lisbon last year, shame on you. The unassuming Portuguese capital was the hit of the season with European media. A heady mix of intimate hotels, Moorish history and architecture, fine wines and plenty of tapas style seafood (and the nation’s favourite custard tarts), Lisbon has the sun, sea and sand of a beach holiday but in an urban break.
