To mark its 17th anniversary, FN Designs has unveiled Working Utopia: A Chronicle in Portraits, a new photography exhibition by H.H. Sheikha Wafa Hasher Al Maktoum that celebrates the people who have helped shape Alserkal Avenue into one of the UAE’s leading cultural destinations.

Now open at FN Designs in Alserkal Avenue, the exhibition presents a series of intimate portraits documenting the artists, creatives, collaborators and cultural figures whose work and relationships have contributed to the district’s evolution over the past 17 years. More than a collection of photographs, Working Utopia offers a visual record of the community that continues to influence the UAE’s thriving creative landscape.
Rather than simply capturing likenesses, each portrait was developed through conversation, allowing personal stories and shared experiences to inform the final image. The result is an exhibition that explores the human connections behind the country’s cultural scene, highlighting the individuals whose creativity and collaboration have helped define Alserkal Avenue.

“Photographing people is easy. Creating portraits with meaning behind them is the challenging part,” said H.H. Sheikha Wafa Hasher Al Maktoum, Founder of FN Designs. “Every session began with a conversation. Those moments allowed the photographs to become more than just images and helped capture the stories, relationships, and experiences that connect this creative community.”
While each portrait stands on its own, together they form a collective narrative that reflects the growth of the UAE’s artistic ecosystem. The exhibition considers not only individual achievements but also the importance of dialogue, collaboration and the relationships that underpin a flourishing creative community.

Since establishing its home at Alserkal Avenue in 2009, FN Designs has witnessed the district’s transformation from an emerging arts hub into one of the region’s most influential cultural destinations. Working Utopia reflects on that journey while recognising the people whose contributions continue to shape its future.
“Working Utopia is ultimately about people,” added H.H. Sheikha Wafa Hasher Al Maktoum. “It is a celebration of the relationships, memories, and collective efforts that have contributed to the growth of our creative community. My hope is that visitors leave with a deeper appreciation for the individuals behind the cultural landscape we see today.”
The exhibition remains on view at FN Designs in Alserkal Avenue.
