Claridge’s has published its first authorised biography, Claridge’s: Queen of Hotels, Hotel of Kings, written by historian Martin Williams and published by Hodder & Stoughton. Released this October, the book explores the history of the Mayfair hotel, tracing its evolution into one of London’s most recognisable luxury hospitality destinations.

Established in 1812, Claridge’s has become synonymous with British hospitality, combining traditional service with a continued emphasis on innovation and renewal. Over more than two centuries, the hotel has welcomed generations of royalty, political figures, celebrities and cultural luminaries, establishing an international reputation for its distinctive approach to luxury.
The biography draws on unprecedented access to Claridge’s archives, uncovering previously unseen material and stories from the hotel’s past. Williams examines the architecture, interior design and haute cuisine that have shaped its identity, alongside the personalities and events that have contributed to its enduring place in British cultural history.

Among the notable figures associated with the hotel are Empress Eugénie, Audrey Hepburn, Winston Churchill and Gordon Ramsay. Their connections to Claridge’s reflect the breadth of its history, spanning royalty, cinema, politics and contemporary gastronomy.
Through a series of historical accounts, Williams explores how the hotel has developed alongside changing tastes and social conventions while retaining its established character. The book also offers readers a behind-the-scenes perspective on the people, traditions and decisions that have helped shape its reputation.
Claridge’s managing director Thomas Kochs said: “We are honoured to be working with Martin Williams and Hodder & Stoughton on this first book on Claridge’s.” He added that Williams had uncovered “all kinds of colourful and magical stories about life at Claridge’s over the years”, deepening the team’s appreciation of the hotel’s history.

For Williams, the project offered an opportunity to bring together the many influences behind the institution’s distinctive character. “It’s been a privilege to be granted the opportunity to tell, for the first time ever, the complete history of Claridge’s – truly a hotel like no other,” he said.
Claridge’s: Queen of Hotels, Hotel of Kings is available in hardback, audiobook and eBook formats. Published by Hodder & Stoughton, the book can be purchased through the hotel’s official shop, offering readers an account of the people, places and traditions behind one of London’s longstanding hospitality institutions.
