The House of Native is based in Dubai- a city shaped by local heritage as by global trends; is known as today’s only enterprise to manufacture luxury leather goods in the UAE. Native values the tradition of intricate craftsmanship, and most importantly the pillars that form the luxury brand are manifested in the tangible shape, form, material and unique silhouette.
Here we meet with Rachna Malkani, Creative Director of The House of Native, who fills us in on her goals behind the brand and how her mission is to draw the world’s attention to Dubai as a fashion destination by redefining genuine leather luxury goods at The House of Native.
Tell us how did you decide to shift from economy and political science (your major) and your work as financial consultant into designing bags?
Life, Destiny or something like that, I just did everything that I needed to do at that point in time of my life, so when life demanded me taking on the role od a designer I took it on with all my heart to it.
Why did you choose to settle in Dubai?
Didn’t have much of a choice since family was here.
How did you decide on the brand’s name?
In a city like Dubai where we live amongst the maximum number of nationalities and yet we all feel like we belong, and a brand that has been born here with passion to manufacture a world class luxury leather product, it only felt befitting to call it Native, its complementary to the sprit of UAE and the way we feel to be here.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of manufacturing in Dubai?
Advantages that you are the only one of your kind and you stand out amongst even the biggest brands available to buy, as it’s a unique scenario for a luxury leather brand like Native to be doing it all here from conceptualizing, designing and manufacturing.
Disadvantages that its hard, since its difficult to find resources and technical bits due to unavailability of the things that are needed to support a leather industry here , so yes it becomes quite an affair to manage production always on time and promptly to keep it running smooth.
Are you planning on reinforcing your shoes collection since the market lacks made in UAE high-end shoes?
Definitely we plan to do so, we started with flats and we have already moved on to doing heals as well and this will continue to grow into different levels of growth into shoes segment. We are quite proud to have achieved the quality and designs that we have done so far and we are looking forward to keep taking it to next levels.
Can you guide us through the creative stages each collection goes through?
Its an ongoing process in my head first, coz I don’t really sit and draw at one time the whole collection, it takes me all the time in the world. For me it begins with going inwards and working on my own thoughts and experiences while observing the world around me. I’m more of a self-analyzing person so everything that I make has to first make sense to me. I don’t like following fashion codes I simply follow my heart. Once I am clear with my thoughts I try to express them in shapes and designs one by one with my sketches, its almost a let out or release for me for my thoughts.
Once this is done I have to make sure I choose the leather and the colors that would complement the shapes and structure of the forms created and is able to look and feel luxury, its like almost expressing your thoughts in the most beautiful way you can visualize them.
And then I need to complement the structures with good metal accessories of the highest quality and feel., so I work on the shapes and structures of these for each bag.
Then we move to prototypes stage, which is first done in a base form to create a proper pattern, once I’m ok with the size and form, we move to the leather prototype stage. This is where you are always looking forward to achieve it all but more than often it can surprise you , so you never know if your true vision can take form as per your thoughts unless this stage. If all goes as I want it, it’s a final product, if not then we work over it again with the changes that I feel would make it look and feel the way I want to see it.
What is so unique and special about your recent collection?
To me every Native collection is unique and Special. The latest collection was about the world of Duality that we all live, and the acceptance of being it all and wearing it all with authenticity and pride, coz only you define who you are at what point and situation in your life, no one else can define it. It is about moving beyond labels, judgement and learning to accept individuality in every way.
In your own opinion why would a client prefer your designs to any other known international houses?
Besides the fact that they are refreshing to their eyes and are made with impeccable standards of craftsmanship with highest quality of leathers, which shows the passion each bag is created with, Also the fact that each bag has a story behind it and every Native you carry, you are telling a tale. You are not only carrying a Native, you are carrying your most authentic self while making a statement with it.
Where do you source your leather?
Italy and France.
Your brand uses a variety of high quality luxury leathers, what’s your favorite one which you like working with?
Calf, French Bull, Camel and Python are my favorites.
Tell us more about Native’s identity?
It’s Natives DNA, it’s the manifesto that says it all:
We’re for unlabelling.
For dropping pre-conceived notions.
We celebrate beauty beyond the obvious,
And being comfortable in one’s skin.
We’re driven by spontaneity.
And are free in spirit.
We create from the heart.
Not from populism.
We conceive that which is uncolored, no matter how tinted the lens.
And unbiased, no matter where majority sits.
We’re Unintimidated.
WE’RE NATIVE.
What are the standards you follow to design luxury bag for a workingwoman?
The best standards to flow are their lifestyle, their needs and how can we meet them while making her look trendy and in style on the Go.
What’s your goal that you would want to achieve for 2018?
To grow and work on expanding our horizons across the world. It’s time to put Dubai, UAE on a global Map in luxury leather industry as well.
Where can we find Native’s luxury bags?
Native Outlet at The Mall Jumeirah, Native Outlet at the Abu Dhabi Mall, Native collection at the Tryano, Yas Mall.
And on our official online store.
What occupies your time the most? You have successfully combined between your role as a mother and as a workingwoman, tell us how do you do that?
That’s something that I feel every woman is born to do, multitasking, whether its between work and home or in other different roles, coz no woman really plays only one role in her life, she has so much to care for through the course of her life that almost becomes her second nature to just do whatever it takes to get things done and wherever, while it has its challenges but with time and experience you learn to master this as well.

Lebanese designer Saiid Kobeisy’s love and appreciation for fashion was mainly triggered at his teenage years. His father ran a boutique in Beirut, selling evening dresses; this is where Kobeisy spent most of his free time to interact with the customers and enjoyed giving them styling advice in the most appropriate sense.
Years later, he followed his passion and pursed a degree in Fashion Design, and finally soon after he officially launched his very own couture label in 2002, the first Saiid Kobeisy atelier in Beirut.
Famous for his cascading silhouettes, dramatic cuts and glamorous handcrafted details, we caught up with the designer to find out more about what truly made him turn his passion into a career, and what sets him apart from other couturiers and much more.
How would you describe your aesthetic? Has it evolved over time?
The Saiid Kobeisy aesthetic is a striking mélange of opposites, where the modern meets the classic, the sensual softens the bold, and the unexpected twist makes a lasting impression. Unlike the cuts, colors, and characteristics of every collection that continuously evolve from season to season, the Saiid Kobeisy aesthetic remains unchanged.
What made you want to start a journey in fashion?
My father had a boutique for evening gowns. As a teenager, whenever I had a free moment, I would intervene with the customers to give them the advice that I thought was appropriate. It was my passion and I had an eye for it, as they say. I did not want to do anything else in life. I studied fashion design and when I felt ready, I started my own Couture House.
Do you tend to design with a certain woman or character in mind?
I design for the woman who is not afraid to leave her mark and effortlessly turns heads while fearlessly strutting down her path.
What are your favorite fabrics/ embellishments to work with?
Lace Chantilly and brocade.
What unexpected things inspired the SS 18 collection?
The Couture SS18 collection by the title “Tales from the East” is inspired by the most royal and regal of birds, the Manchurian Crane that makes it spring voyage to China every year. The crane is revered in ancient myths as a symbol of elegance, purity, and nobility and admired for its untiring strength; all qualities that are beautifully translated in the collection’s Feather-encrusted robes, fluttering layers, and colors like fiery red, jet black and whisper white.
What advice can you give the bride-to-be when choosing a wedding dress?
I would advise the bride of today to choose the dress that best reflects her personality, style, and identity.
Three words to describe the Saiid Kobeisy world?
Sensual, bold, sophisticated.

Toni Breiss’ passion for perfection has evolved into the inevitable address of an international wedding and event maker. His prestigious career started in Paris, where he launched his own wedding and event creation company, named Level by Toni Breiss- which has already reached a glamorous pinnacle of success in both Paris and Beirut.
Famous for his signature touch of distinction and extravaganza, Level by Toni Breiss incorporates a large team of professionals who aim at providing their clients with an innovative and tailor-made service- from magnificent venues to stunning floral arrangements and exquisite menus.
Here we chat with the wedding maker as he tells us more about his conception of weddings: a world where he can turn a dream into a true reality.
How did you get into the weddings & planning events business?
I found my passion in design. Designing an empty space, creating and transmitting another person’s vision brings me happiness. The extreme pleasure was while adding a bit of challenge to the project. It all started when I wanted to mix architect and beauty into events, while inventing and creating an ambiance and a whole story behind every event. I tried to merge both worlds of planning and designing that’s why we are not only wedding planners, we are also designers with an aim to transform this dream into reality.
What do you feel are the most important elements to a complete wedding or event?
It’s important to live the wedding, if the bride and groom don’t enjoy themselves, how will the guests? Tailor-made weddings or events must be executed with passion before anything. We follow up with the clients over a long period, sometimes six months or a whole year ahead of the even. Sharing special moments instantly become integrated into the families and this bond is magical. Another important element is emotions, they have to be involved to make the best personalized events.
What are the wedding trends this year? Do you follow them?
I follow them by traveling around the world for creativeness and endless development, I actually don’t follow the trend, and I just get inspired by the trend icons. It is a process of continuous research, learning, attending seminars. We usually create the pantone colour accordingly, for example this year we are attentive to the purple shade.
What tips do you have for brides planning their wedding today?
It’s very essential to really go and see a wedding designer or planner in order to organize all the lost thoughts. It’s a whole process, it is a life time project to get something out of it and that is flawless. I must say, a bride should always choose a wedding designer close to her heart.
You have executed extravagant events all over the world. What are your ultimate favorite places to plan an event or a wedding?
Yes, I already did! Each season has its own preferred wedding. It depends, it can be a huge wedding in Abu Dhabi, or another one in south of France in a special place taking over the entire weekend, or in Beirut City; every single wedding has a story and is full of love.
Describe your favourite kind of wedding?
By presenting only the highest level of creativity and personalized services that come up with the most remarkable designs is my favorite kind of wedding. Specifically working in huge venues where we are comfortable with the space, décor and beautiful ambiance to create a whole story behind it.
If you weren’t an event planner, what other profession would you have liked to be?
I wanted to be a fashion designer.
Who was your first huge client you ever planned an event for?
We had the pleasure to design a wedding in Abu Dhabi for a Sheikha. We built a 6000sqm tent in a a massive empty land, she requested the tent to be free-standing without any columns at all. After two months of work, we created an event that hosted 3,500 guests. Most definitely this event was forever marked as the most special and challenging event we ever did.
What does a perfect event/wedding mean to you?
Beautiful, very well organized, originality and new spirit. It is a moment where people are shining, where the bride and groom look fabulous. At the end of the day, we are designing the atmosphere, the décor, but they are the main characters in this setting and they have to be comfortable in order enjoy their big day.
What’s on Toni Breiss’ Agenda?
We are looking forward for a very promising season this year in Beirut, Paris and Riyadh. I am very happy, and meanwhile I am working on launching my third candle scent signed Toni Breiss. I already launched 2 scents: “Coeur de Pivoine” and “Ambre Noir”.

Letitia Gallery is a new contemporary art gallery founded by two dealers Mohamad Al Hamoud and Annie Vartivarian. Located in Hamra- the heart of Beirut City, the art space main goal is to focus on encouraging global engagement with modern art in Lebanon, also the gallery is famous for collaborating with international curators to produce project-focused exhibition programs to stage four to five shows every year.
Here we talk to the Ms. Vartivarian about the world of a gallerist, as she shares her views on the art scene withiin the Middle East.
Tell us more about how you decided to get into the contemporary art world? Is there someone who inspired you to become a gallerist?
My passion for contemporary art has been developing over many years of fascination by both Middle Eastern and international artists.
No one in specific inspired me but during my travels I visited many galleries and I always loved to support and encourage artists so it came naturally to become a gallerist.
What made you want to open your own gallery?
Lebanon is considered a hub of discovery for MENA’s regional artistic talents. In recent years Beirut has shown itself to have a voracious appetite for the growth of its cultural landscape.
Beyond the growth of the gallery scene in Beirut; the reopening of museums and inauguration of art foundations highlight the rich cultural heritage of the region and the importance of culture as an instigator of discourse and learning.
Beirut’s place in the contemporary art community is already very exciting and I want to contribute to it by bringing a wide variety of art and artists into my gallery.
What sets your gallery apart from other galleries?
The gallery’s main aim is to provide a platform for discourse around contemporary art within the MENA region. This is achieved through the thoughtful curation of different exhibitions by international artists, many of whom are predominately new to audiences in the Middle East and showing for the first time in the region.
How do you choose the artists to show at Letitia Gallery?
The gallery has a strong ethos of collaboration and has worked in conversation with leading international curators from around the world to discover artists for its program. In some cases the gallery has been fortunate enough to have developed personal friendships with the artists shown. As a patron at the Royal Academy of Arts, the Tate and the Delfina Foundation, I have come into contact and built relationships with a diverse range of contemporary artists.
I make it a point to visit the artist’s studios and have a dialogue with each of them about their work, however artists have always primarily been selected for the caliber of their artistic practice and their ability to translate their work to audiences internationally.
What has been your biggest obstacle?
We had many challenges but of course the political and economic situation of the country are main obstacles
Do you have a favourite contemporary artist?
Olafur Eliasson, Yayoi Kusama and Anselm Kiefer
What’s your intake on the art scene within the Middle East Region?
The interest in contemporary art that is evolving within the Middle East Region brings more art collectors and art lovers to the art market and this encourages more artists to show their work and share their experiences
If you would have the chance to choose to exhibit any artist, from any era, who would you pick?
Gerhard Richter because he gave to contemporary art a new vision.
What’s on Letitia Gallery’s agenda for the year 2018?
Letitia Gallery inaugurated its program for 2018 with the exhibition “Under the Same Moon” by British artist Eileen Cooper, it will be followed in April by the exhibition “Portmanteau” by Egyptian Artist Ahmed Badry, and then exhibitions for Nathaniel Rackowe and Alejandro Ospina
