FW18: SemSem

SemSem brand, envisioned by Founder and Creative Director Abeer Al Othaiba, is known for twits on classic silhouettes, modern elegance and standout details along with a bold colour palette. This season, the pieces are inspired by the glamorous fragrance campaigns of the late ‘80s and early ’90s.

SemSem’s Design Director, Albino Riganello, further looked to Marlene Dietrich in her 1930 film, ‘Morroco’, whose most iconic look was a top hat, and tuxedo with a white bow tie—defying social norms and revolutionizing women’s fashion of that era.

Styled on the Tunisian model Kenza Fourati, the contrast of androgynous silhouettes and luxe sportswear are at the core of the collection. Deconstructed blazers and modern tailoring which have become the DNA of SemSem are reinterpreted for fall with snaps, utilitarian grosgrain ribbons and unexpected leather details. The men’s classic shirt—a brand staple—is reimagined this season with a simple button down that can be worn in multiple ways, including a dress.

Around 60 pieces by Salvador Dalí will be exhibited at Coya restaurant, located in Dubai’s Four Seasons Resort, from today.

Givenchy to Dedicate Couture Show to Founding Couturier

In homage to Monsieur Hubert de Givenchy, Artistic Director Clare Waight Keller will dedicate her FW18 Haute Couture show to the house’s late founder.

The collection is entitled ‘Caraman’, a reference to the historic 19th-century townhouse originally built for the Duke of Caraman located at 3 Avenue George V, and will be shown in Paris on July 1st at 8pm.

This prestigious hôtel particulier, with its grand staircase, elaborate wrought iron bannister and ornate salons, is where the young Hubert de Givenchy chose to establish his couture ateliers in 1959. They remain here to this day, in a building that has served as an ideal setting for fashion shows, elegant receptions and, in 1959, the first boutique.

For the latest show, Waight Keller honors Monsieur de Givenchy’s memory with an homage to his iconic creations, technique and personal lexicon. An effervescent and profound celebration of his timeless elegance and grace, imbued with the designers fresh take on the Givenchy spirit.

Make sure to keep up to date with our coverage of Haute Couture shows on our Instagram account.

First Look: Kris Van Assche’s First Berluti Campaign

Berluti presents it’s first campaign under the artistic direction of Kris Van Assche, showcasing designer’s early imprint on the heritage brand.

Kris Van Assche joined the Parisian house in April after 11 years at Dior Homme. As Van Assche introduction to the Maison, he has enlisted M/M Paris to create a logo based on the letters carved into shoe tree unearthed from an archive ‘Alessandro’ shoe dating back to 1895, the year Alessandro Berluti established himself as shoemaker.

Letters were designed to absorb the erosion of time of this most original signature into a new representation, stylising the faded accents of the embossment into a clarified emblem for things to come. The designer said in a statement:

“For this first campaign, I wanted to create an image rooted in the maison’s origins and emboss it with my vision.”

The campaign, photographed by Jamie Hawksworth and styled by Mauricio Nardi, evokes a similar sense of transition in a conversation between past and future. Van Assche selected Berluti’s classic patinated Venezia leather and alligator Alessandro oxford shoe to honour its formative codes, but kept it fresh with a modern shoot. Antoine Arnault, CEO of Berluti, added:

“This campaign was thought of and art directed by Kris, I relate to it because it speaks of who we are while holding a promise of more to come.”

The Belgian designer will show his first collection for the house in January.

GETTY Images.

For Fendi SS19 menswear show, the brand has collaborated with artist Nico Vascellari on a series of designs across 70’s inspired pieces.

The Italian creative is the fourth guest artist to work with the men’s collection and has used his interest in playful anagrams and mythological views to transforms FENDI to FIEND and ROMA to AMOR, with the double FF logo interpreted in water colour. Tees, satin shirts and newest addition to the accessories – Pekaboo X Lite bag – all received the Vascellari treatment.

The collaboration also included the dramatic set that saw models glide out of the blackout chamber that featured motifs from the artist’s neon sculpture. The collection itself cantered on various version of the bomber jacket, the perfect transitional piece that becomes a hero item in your wardrobe during the first signs of spring.

There were mesh versions with linear print, slightly oversized leather ones, sportier designs with patchwork print and statement making jackets completely covered in the Fendi FF logo. Mainly styled with tailored trousers and micro shorts, we predict that the bomber jacket will be making it on the must-have list next season.

Colours were muted, mainly brown and khaki with accents of subdued yellow and deep red. White ensembles felt fresh while the accessories remained retro with bucket hats dominating the runway alongside bum bags, neck wallets and sandals styled with logo socks. What once may have been associated with a geeky tourist, has been transformed by the hands of designer Silvia Venturini into something desirable – though we still need convincing on the socks and sandals combination.

Resort 2019: Alberta Ferretti

To kick off Men’s fashion week in Milan, Alberta Ferretti presented Resort 2019 collection alongside Limited Edition line, and the new official uniforms she has designed for Alitalia.

Focusing on the Resort, suggestive atmospheres of freedom and leisure have been drawn from an image of a young Ali MacGraw, told through inspirations from streetwear with elements originating from workwear that had a dose of modern curiosity of travel towards unexplored lands. It feels youthful, energetic – ideal for women on the go who want a functional wardrobe with plenty of style.

Fleece fabrics, stonewashed jeans material give life to skirts, dresses, trousers and tracksuits, portraying dynamic daywear, embellished with embroideries, inlays and high-level craftsmanship typical of the Ferretti universe. Don’t worry, romantic dresses are still present but they have something urban and free-spirited about them. Chiffon and silk dresses fluctuate, in constant motion, creating the light, delicate silhouette.

Tribal style dresses were on point, but it’s the carefully crafted separates that fans of the house will be looking to fill up their wardrobes with. Ideal for mix and matching, it’s the folk jackets with fringing, cargo trousers and sweaters with velvet that will be snapped up. Also note pieces from the mini-me line that reminded us of childhood mornings watching Disney’s Pocahontas.

Hero piece was the cropped sequin cape in black with orange and white crystals styled over a black dress, buckled belt and boots evoking the bohemian seventies spirit that could be felt throughout the collection. Ferretti had fun designing these pieces that are as flamboyant as they are sartorial, and we will have fun wearing them.

In the show, Alberta Ferretti paid a homage to the charm of the Alitalia logo which she printed on t-shirt, a sweatshirt and a sweater. She has also showcased the limited-edition pieces like the male tuxedos entirely embroidered with diamond-cut sequins, cape tuxedos and sensual dresses in organzine silk, that transmit a party atmosphere that would have been very popular with a timeless icon like Bianca Jagger.

Meghan Markle Wears Oscar De La Renta to Society Wedding

Meghan Markle and her husband Prince Harry attended the wedding of Celia McCorquodale (a cousin of the Prince), in Stoke Rochford.

The Duchess of Sussex chose a flowing Oscar De La Renta wrap dress with a white fascinator and white court shoes. Unlike her previous looks from the recent Royal engagements which saw her wear a fitted blush dress from Carolina Herrera to the Trooping of the Colours and the a nude Givenchy number to accompany Her Majesty the Queen on a trip to Cheshire, this outfit definitely felt more relaxed with a summery boho vibe.

While some feel that perhaps it is too casual for a society wedding, we think it represents her youthful style and a wrap dress has always been a good option for a summer wedding.

Celia McCorquodale wearing Spencer Tiara.

Apart from a royal guest list, Celia McCorquodale also made headlines by wearing the Spencer Tiara which has not been seen in public for 25 years. Princess Diana wore her family tiara on many occasions with the last being in 1993. After her tragic death in 1997, the diamond piece was returned to the family and has not been worn since.

We Have Another Royal Wedding to Look Forward to

Just when we thought we will have to wait a little while for another Royal Wedding following the nuptials of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, another royal announced some exciting news.

Princess Eugenie, who is Prince Harry’s cousin, is tying the knot with her longtime boyfriend Jack Brooksbank on October 12 in the same venue as Harry and Meghan’s ceremony – St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.

More details will follow and soon everyone will be speculating about the dress she’ll choose, but for now we can suppose that she will follow in her mother’s footsteps and wear the York tiara. It was custom-made for Sarah Ferguson, later the Duchess of York, by jewellers, Garrard.

Meghan Markles Wears Givenchy for Her First Solo Appearance with the Queen

Meghan Markle stepped out for her first solo engagement with Queen Elizabeth II for the opening of Mersey Gateway Bridge in Cheshire.

The Duchess of Sussex accompanied the Queen on the royal train that stopped at Runcorn station earlier today for the event. Markle chose a modest nude dress that covered the shoulders from Givenchy (the same brand that was behind her bespoke wedding gown) that she styled with a skinny belt, court shoes by Sarah Flint and clutch bag all in classic black.

The head of the British royal family went for a brighter approach and wore a lime green button down coat by Stewart Parvin and matching hat, however her accessories mimicked Meghan’s classic touch. The proceedings started with the guests taking a minute silence to remember the tragic day of that fire at the west London tower block Grenfell a year ago, after which they watched the performance from local school children.

Next for the royal visit will be a tour of the Storyhouse theatre and library, before a meeting with a Syrian settlement group. Lunch will follow with members of the city council at Chester Town Hall, after which they will board the Royal transport back to London.

Hermès Birkin Himalaya Niloticus Breaks Record at Auction

A rare Hermès Birkin Himalaya Niloticus has become the most expensive bag ever sold at auction in Europe.

With two Himalaya’s released every year, this 2008 edition features 18k white gold and diamond-encrusted hardware and was estimated to sell for £100,000 – £150,000. However, the final sale exceeded Christie’s London expectation with the piece going for £162,500.

The 10-year-old crocodile bag measures at 30cm wide and is named Himalaya due to the colour gradient that said to resemble the snow-capped hills of the Himalayas. Only three of such designs ever made it to auction with Christie’s saying in a statement:

“The diamond pieces created by Hermes are exceptional, but none are nearly as iconic as the Himalaya. It is believed that only one or two of the Diamond Himalayas are produced each year, globally, making it one of the lowest production runs for handbags.”

With a Hermès Birkin considered a better investment than gold or the stock market, someone just made a very wise purchase.

If you’re looking to add something to your cold-weather wardrobe then we suggest floral print cape and leopard spotted coat, while the sequin playsuits and dresses would be ideal for the festive period. New Dancing Fountain and World’s Largest Coral Garden are Coming to the UAE

One of the great things about living in the UAE is that you are never short of thing’s to do and see, and now we have two more attractions to look forward to.

The Dubai dancing fountains in Downtown attracts hundreds of people daily to the choreographed routines to various pieces of music and once the new mall on Palm Jumeirah, The Pointe, is complete there will be another water show to enjoy. A total of 12,000 square metr area of fountain will be at the centre with the view of the Atlantis in the background.

For now, we had the aquariums and a few snorkeling destinations to explore the underwater world but soon you won’t have to travel to Indian Ocean to spot Nemo and friends. Fujairah is set to get world’s largest coral garden, and it could set the Guinness World Record but most importantly it will be a haven for marine life and those looking to use their PADI qualification in the region.

Wes Gordon’s First Collection for Carolina Herrera is ‘Where Golf Course Meets the Desert’

Ever since seeing Wes Gordon’s work for Carolina Herrera’s bridal range, we have been eagerly anticipating his first RTW collection for the house.

The sunny and youthful pieces from Resort 2019 still reflect the heritage of the brand, but they definitely have Gordon’s twist. The dresses are feminine and flowing. Some with floral and polka dot prints, and others with cut out details on the waistline and back. The separates are elegant with loose button-down shirts neatly tucked into A-line skirts, some pleated. The colour palette is a mix of delicious candy tones while evening pieces play with black and red hues.

The rainbow cape over dress echoed the dream-like world of Coachella, while the skinny belts twisted round the buckle and styled with straight leg trousers are as city chic as it gets. The designer explained his inspiration to WWD:

“This is where the golf course meets the desert, where midcentury architecture meets kitsch wallpaper, where Slim Aarons meets Coachella, a bright, sunshiny oasis. It’s a little quirky and glamorous at the same time.”

With a collection that offers dressed-up clothing with minimum effort and a very happy personality, we think Gordon is on the right tracks.

Audemars Piguet Breaks Ground on Hôtel des Horlogers

Audemars Piguet have officially started building Hôtel des Horlogers in the home of the luxury brand.

The village of Le Brassus in Switzerland has been the base for the watchmaker since 1875, and just like with their constant pushing of the design boundaries, the hotel will have a unique feature that we’ve not seen anywhere else – a roof you can ski down from.

Thanks to the zig-zag design, the guests can ski straight to the front door from the slopes and then further down to the street below. The house may have started out as a small workshop but they are thinking big with the hotel taking over  75,000-square-feet of snowy scenery. Jasmine Audemars, Chairwoman of the Audemars Piguet Board of Directors, said in a statement:

“This project is far from simple, but it is important, not only for Audemars Piguet but for the entire Vallée de Joux. The hotel is a way to attract a broader public to our stunning Vallée de Joux. It is not only primordial for us to be able to cater to the needs of the international travellers but also to those of our local neighbours.”

Built by Danish architect firm Bjarke Ingels Group, the hotel is expected to open in 2020 and will offer 50 rooms with all comfort and views towards the Risoud forest, two restaurants and a lounge bar, a wellness and fitness area, as well as three seminar rooms. But it doesn’t stop there. There will also be a watch museum, the Musée Atelier Audemars Piguet, next to the hotel which the skiers can also access straight from the slopes.

For a unique winter getaway, we think Hôtel des Horlogers will be worth the journey.

The stars of Broadway descended onto the red carpet last night for the annual Tony Awards showcasing some of the best on-stage talent and sparkling style.

Among the A-Listers were Kerry Washington, Carey Mulligan and  Robert De Niro with a performance from non other than Bruce Springsteen, who received a special lifetime achievement award.

There was a lot of love for slim fitting silhouettes in a form of floor length gowns or neatly tailored suits. Kerry Washington looked like a modern day warrior in Atelier Versace, while Rachel Brosnahan’s romantic Dolce & Gabbana dress perfectly matched the floral backdrop. Tina Fey channeled the silver screen in custom Thom Browne and Carey Mulligan gave us a lesson in flawless modest event dressing in Giambattista Valli.

A giant red and blue circus tent welcomed guests to the first Moschino co-ed show with designer Jeremy Scott taking to the mic as the master of ceremony.

Scott knows how to bring a feeling of celebration to all the brands’ runway presentations, and his third showing in hometown of Los Angeles saw a combination of Resort 2019 and SS 2019 men’s collections. Dressed in gold and black suit with a top hat, Scott addressed the audience with:

‘We have thrills and chills and plenty of frills tonight! You will witness death-defying acts of glamour! You will see beading and embroidery never before attempted in a setting like this! A kaleidoscope of colours will tantalize your eyes. So, without any further ado, let the show begin.’
