Level Kids Partners With UNICEF

Level kids unicef

Level Kids staged a fashion show to announce their new partnership with UNICEF, the leading global organization working for children.

To raise awareness focusing on areas including health, education and nutrition, Level Kids welcomed hundreds of adults and children to its Fall/Winter runway and showcased various trends with various performances.

Miral Youssef, General Manager of Level Kids said: “Level Kids is not just about retail. It is about entertainment, play and happiness and we would like to support in spreading that happiness to children in need. UNICEF is the perfect partner for this since the organization works for every child, everywhere, to build a better world for everyone.”

A lot of children across the region and around the world don’t have access to food, water, shelter or education and 1000 AED could provide an education for a child for a whole year.

Sandra Sorial who works on UNICEF global alliances in the region, said: “There is a big focus in the region on early childhood development and the first 1000 days of the life of the child to extend the focus of children surviving to children thriving. Positive parenting, pre-school learning and children’s brain stimulation so children can reach their full potential are all big priorities for us in the region.”

Donations can be made at the Level Kids store located in City Walk and will soon be available on levelkids.com.

First Look At The Hijab Wearing Barbie

A post shared by Ibtihaj Muhammad (@ibtihajmuhammad) on

For the first time there is a Hijab wearing Barbie and we are even more impressed by the woman who inspired the creation.

If you are not familiar, it’s time to get to know Ibtihaj Muhammad who is the first American athlete to compete in the Olympic games wearing a Hijab. She won a bronze model in fencing team at the 2016 Rio Olympics so naturally the doll is dressed in a padded fencing attire with a pair of Nike trainers as Muhammad is also an ambassador for the sports brand.

“Barbie is celebrating Ibtihaj not only for her accolades as an Olympian, but for embracing what makes her stand out,” said Sejal Shah Miller, Vice President of Global Marketing for Barbie. “Ibtihaj is an inspiration to countless girls who never saw themselves represented, and by honoring her story, we hope this doll reminds them that they can be and do anything.”

American company Mattel will release it later next year as part of the Barbie #Shero line which pays tribute to inspiring women. On her Instagram page Muhammad thanked the company for making her part of the Barbie family and added: “I’m proud to know that little girls everywhere can now play with a Barbie who chooses to wear hijab! This is a childhood dream come true.”

Trending: Wide Belts

Wide belts made a come back this Fall and have been a hit when styled over feminine dresses or fuzzy outerwear.

They’re ideal for adding definition to relaxed silhouettes like plaid boyfriend blazers or teddy bear coats, so strap yourself in this season with options from Bottega Veneta, Tod’s and Roksanda. Look for variety of textures and be as daring as Prada who sent her models down the runway sporting furry belts, while Adam Selman played with proportions and let the elongated strap hang down the leg.

Michael Kors, Nina Ricci and Isabel Marant showed how a statement buckle can transform a whole outfit from lady-like to tough-girl-glamour. For evening, they can modernise your gowns and cocktails dresses for a sensual fit with a tough attitude.

Don’t expect the wide waist belts to go anywhere next season—the super-flattering accessory trend will be sticking around.

Editors Pick: Claudia Schiffer x Aquazzura

Ever wanted to walk in model’s shoes? You’re in luck as Claudia Schiffer for Aquazzura collection has officially launched exclusively at Bloomingdale’s in Kuwait.

Aquazzura’s creative director, Edgardo Osorio, and model chose to build a capsule closet of shoes based on her favorite pieces; must haves for the modern woman who steps into many roles.

He said: Not only is Claudia one of the most iconic women in the world, but she also has an amazing eye for fashion after so many years working in the industry. It has been so exciting working together and creating a perfect shoe wardrobe that we both love.”

The inspiration behind the capsule is drawn from different moments of Claudia’s life, especially years of fashion experience including walking for some of the biggest designers in the world – her feet know good shoes.

Claudia’s love for fashion and Edgardo’s attention to detail came together seamlessly and she added:Partly because of this synergy, and partly because of his incredible talent and beautiful taste, creating this collection together has been a pure pleasure – and it will hopefully give the women who wear the shoes just the same delight.”

Alexander McQueen Pre-SS18 Collection

While everyone looks forward to ultra femininity and pastel shades next season, Alexander McQueen pre-SS18 collection offers a tougher approach.

Inspired by English country gardens after a spring rain, the pieces have a sense of heritage and romance, but these soft silhouettes are broken down and reconstructed with a modern fresh feel. Not surprising that Jennifer Lawrence chose a look from this collection for the Governors Awards.

For every lace trim, organza layer and satin panel there is jacquard, tweed and raw denim. The tailoring is boxy with white contrast stitching and floral panels inserted as though randomly on trench coats and structured A-line dresses. Prince of Wales check feels unquestionably British, but when the straight line cut is styled with a pair of tough shoes or a caged sheer skirt and matching crop top, there is definitely a sense of edge to this English rose.

There is plenty of leather in shape of corsets, belts, trousers and masculine black leather lace-up brogues with a pointed toe have elevated crêpe rubber soles and a low mirrored heel. Don’t worry, you can also choose the jewelled stiletto-heeled pumps.

Raw romanticism at it’s finest.

A&E Meets Head Of Design at Dubai Design Week

With Dubai Design Week kicking off this week, A&E meets William Knight, Managing Director and Head of Design at Art Dubai Group. Knight is bringing his extensive experience from the UK where most recently he was Show Director of Design Trade Events at Media 10 and headed the vibrant 100% Design and Clerkenwell Design Week events.

We find out what he thinks of the creative scene in the region and his plans for the future.

You joined Art Dubai Group earlier this year, what have been your main points of focus?

A key focus has been to connect with as many people in the design community as possible; Dubai Design Week only happens thanks to the commitment and effort of the design community as well as our sponsors and supporters. I’ve also tried to get under the skin of the city, see what makes its creativity tick and where the opportunities exist; some of this is about context and I’ve been lucky enough to visit other destinations since arriving; in both the UAE and the region. Essentially trying to make sense of it all.

How is the design scene here different to London?

There are similarities; particularly the international brands that operate in both markets; great design is universal. In London, there has been a concerted campaign over more than 20 years to promote design through a host of channels; and it has succeeded in positioning itself as a city of ideas. Dubai is on a similar path, with more and more design activity taking place, better media coverage and a developing knowledge and understanding of the potential of design.

Are there any designers in the Middle East that you’re a particular fan of?

On a personal level, I’ve been made to feel so welcome by the design community, so there are lots of designers I’m fans of. In terms of work, I’ll reference just some we’re featuring in this year’s Dubai Design Week: Lujaine Rezk and Albert Kolambel have developed a beautiful entrance structure for Dubai Design Week at d3, Boano Prismontas and Ricardas Blazukas are promising a dramatic installation here too, depicting a middle eastern skyline. There is a host of talent within group shows Abwab, and Once Upon Design, curated by Noor Aldabbagh. These are just some and I’m looking forward to learning more during the week.

Where does your interest in the industry come from?

I started working in design promotion in 1999. From that point I was drawn in by the positive nature of the industry; its progressive and focused on making things better. The industry is also multi-faceted; this diversity of applications is really interesting for me; design can be used to make one person’s every-day life just that bit better through to re-defining an entire country.

DXBDW 2017.

How is Dubai going to become a key design destination in the future?

By continuing to believe in itself and it growing its pool of design talent. Working together is key, which is why both Dubai Design Week and Dubai Design District are so critical in putting Dubai on the world’s design map. Another key factor is being distinctive; from a Dubai Design Week perspective, this is why shows such as Abwab and Global Grad Show are important – you simply cannot see these shows anywhere else on the planet.

Which projects have you been most excited to work on?

The installation programme this year has been great to work on and I’m looking forward to the projects taking shape. However, it’s the big show, Downtown Design that I’m really excited to see: this is a showcase of 150 interior and furniture brands, staged within a brand-new location; the d3 Waterfront at Dubai Design District. This show is a great way to see trends and products produced by international and local brands, and shouldn’t be missed.

What have you found to be the key design interests of the people residing in Dubai?

I’ve managed to meet and work with a host of talented people across the design community, by its nature it’s engaged in a host of interests but one thing joins them all up – the pride, commitment and opportunity they can see in Dubai.

Can you reveal anything about the future events?

Events are ever-changing; Dubai Design Week is on a great trajectory, we need to keep connected to the community and reflect its interests and direction; design doesn’t stand still, so one thing is for sure, each event will be different from the last.

Charline Deek, Senior Editor, A&E Magazine Arabia

The one and only beauty product that I use every day is Terracotta the bronzing powder from Guerlain.  It gives me a natural glow even if I apply it without any other product and plus it’s easy to use, especially when I’m late and want to leave the house to reach work on time.

In hotter climates your skin is more prone to oiliness so to battle the shine I use Avene Cleanance Gel which is a foaming cleanser for oily and acne-prone skin. It helps wash away the dirt without stripping the skin and also lasts a very long time. I follow this with Avene Hydrance Optimale hydrating cream that replenishes moisture and gives a rested, glowing complexion.

Diana Bell-Heather, Online Editor aeworld.com

I’m probably not the only one to think that Diptyque is solely a fragrance brand with candles as the main focus, but their naturally sourced skincare range is worth exploring. I have most recently been using Infused Facial Water that soothes the skin and creates a healthy base for cream and makeup. Made with a hydrolate of Damask rose and and infusion of nasturtium, it aims to bring out the radiance of the complexion. It cleanses the skin gently, moisturises, tones and helps restore its natural radiance.

On Our Radar: Racil

Bringing a contemporary twist on the classic tuxedo, buyer-turned-designer Racil Chalhoub brings classic elements of Savile Row tailoring and Parisian materials with a Lebanese sensibility to create a unique collection for all women.

Born in Beirut and raised in Paris, she studied Fashion Design and Marketing in London at the American University. She returned to Beirut in 2006 to open a unique fashion concept store and organic café which then lead to her career as a fashion buyer. During her eight-year stint, Racil closely observed what women want from a wardrobe and was inspired by the potential of the tuxedo, it’s versatility and the subtle language of tailoring. The idea of Le Smoking remained with her and in 2015 she launched her eponymous brand RACIL setting up a studio in Notting Hill, London.

Racil Chalhoub

The collections have now grown to include dresses, tops and accessories and for SS18 Racil took inspiration from Geisha district in Kyoto, Japan. The range aims to show the boldly diverse spectrum of Japan with some of pieces designed is striking colours, while the rest feel softer with a focus on the kimono .

She said: “I have always been fascinated with kimonos. They tell stories about people’s lives and the women who wore them. It would be impossible for us to wear a traditional kimono today, so it’s about taking inspiration from it and translating it into modern day living.”

The ability to take inspiration and twist it to suit modern tastes is something Racil has managed to achieve with ease making her pieces not only a statement, but also timeless.

First part of SS18 collection hits the stores later this month.

10 Questions With…Downtown Design’s Rue Kothari

Rue Kothari Downtown Design

This months Dubai Design Week will be packed full of workshops and art installations with over 200 projects displayed and centred around the Dubai Design District.

With aim to bring regional creativity, such as camel leather design workshop, with internationally recognized names like Swarovski, we expect the edition to be one of the highlights of the month. Returning headline exhibitions include Downtown Design and we chat with Rue Kothari, the Fair Director, about the creative scene in the region and beyond.

You have lived in Dubai a long time, how has the design scene changed?

To be honest, there wasn’t really a design scene 10 years ago. At that time, even the art scene was still in its infancy. When I did my first issue as Editor in Chief of Harper’s Bazaar Interiors, my theme was ‘Made in Arabia’. I wanted to champion the emerging designers of the UAE – but I had a hard time finding them. The designers I discovered then, have now become the backbone of the region’s homegrown industry: Khalid Shafar, Aljoud Lootah, Fadi Sarredine, Taher Asad Bakhtiari. I’m really so immensely proud of what they’ve achieved both here and internationally.

Describe the day to day tasks of your role as the Fair Director?

My role is very wide and quite commercial. I’m responsible for not only selling the fair, but as the guardian of the brand, to curate the presentation of brands to ensure they are all high quality, original, contemporary and relevant to our buyers. I oversee the marketing too, and as the spokesperson and still a journalist at heart, I write a lot of opinion pieces about the regional design industry, moderate panels and participate in talks that cover all aspects of design.

Which Middle Eastern designers are you most excited about?

Providing a platform for young regional brands to connect to a commercial audience, is something I’m passionate about. The instant feedback, networking, contacts they make that lead to sales all give them a real taste of the market. It’s an invaluable experience. I’m excited about them all, and there is such a diversity this year – from furniture makers and glass carvers to ceramic tiles and handwoven carpets.

When it comes to showcasing international brands, which countries have you explored for talent this season?

We always have a fantastic showing by leading Italian brands like Moroso, as well as an Italian Pavilion that showcases artisanal pieces. This year, we have a large presence from Spanish brands, from brands like Kettal and Vondom, while the Portuguese have brought more than 6 brands and a Pavillion of 15 additional brands this year. All these countries are experts in manufacturing design and have chosen Downtown Design as the key platform to access the opportunities of the Middle East.

Dubai design week

Apical Reform, Dubai Design Week.

What is special about this edition of Downtown Design?

This year, celebrate our 5th year in a brand new location in on the d3 Waterfront at the Dubai Design District. We worked with architects LSD to masterplan the venue that’s twice the size of the previous edition, housing 150 brands of which more than 70 are brand new to the fair, most for the first time in the region. We worked with landscape architects Desert Ink to create a large scale garden installation that will really bring the wow factor, Pallavi Dean Interiors to design a concept reception area, and AAC Interiors who have created a bespoke pop up of the popular d3 design destination The Lighthouse – who will bring a truly special F&B and retail experience to the fair.

Dubai prides itself as being the center of innovation, how has Downtown Design evolved?

Downtown began as a very small and specialized fair. Since then we have not only grown by 350% but we’ve expanded the concept to ensure that it’s not only beautifully curated but commercially focused. We work with the buyer community around the region to ensure that make the fair the one Middle East fixture they attend in their yearly design calendar. And with the word spreading globally, space in the fair is sold out early every year. Our concept is truly unique and we’re very proud that it’s based here in Dubai.

Which designers should we keep an eye on?

Definitely ones to watch in the fair are L’Objet – an up and coming accessories brand from New York. CC-tapis a cult carpet brand from Milan, Designed by Hind – a ceramic tableware brand from the UAE, Sophie Mallebranch – an innovative textile brand from France and Apical Reform – an innovative design brand from India.

Where do you look to for inspiration?

I don’t tend to look for it – it tends to find me, and it can be anywhere.

What would you say is the best part of your job?

Being exposed to so much new and innovative design, meeting highly creative people all over the world, and being able to advocate for the regional design industry wherever I travel – is incredibly inspiring and rewarding.

The best piece of advice you ever received?

Don’t sweat the small stuff.

Balenciaga fall 17

Balenciaga Fall 2017

Balenciaga has over taken Gucci as the best selling product brand in the world, according to global fashion search engine Lyst and the Business of Fashion.

After analysing quarterly report, the contemporary fashion house has overtaken Gucci that sits in the second spot with Off-White surprisingly taking the third  jumping a whopping 31 places since the last report. Or perhaps not so surprising with it being one of the hottest tickets during Paris Fashion SS18 with Naomi Campbell walking the runway.

“A new logo and a Collette residency kept the brand top of mind, while Demna Gvasalia continues to design products that drive the fashion narrative online,” Lyst said of Balenciaga.

A&E Edits: Best Eyebrow Pencils

Sometimes all you need is a groomed pair of brows. But if you have a few patches from over plucking, we have found the best eyebrow pencils to help you bridge the gap.

We have all been guilty of over-tweezing on one too many occasions, the good news is that a quick fix lies in finding the right pencil for you. Matching the shade is only half the job, it has to have lasting texture to not only fill, but also sculpt a natural shape.

Once you chose the right pencil from the gallery above, use it to patch up any errors and then move on to sharpening the arch as well as extending the brow tail. Make sure you have an eyebrow brush at hand to groom through the hairs for a flawless, even finish.

In Focus: Azza Fahmy

Azza Fahmy egypt jewellery

As the Egyptian born jewellery house Azza Fahmy launches it’s new traditional collection, we take a closer look at the inspiration.

Azza Fahmy has a fondness for history and uses it as reference in her work. Trained at the Faculty of Fine Arts, she launched her jewellery house in 1969 that brought 7000 years of Egyptian heritage and culture to a modern audience. Her journey began in the passageways of old Cairo’s Khan El Khalili bazaar, where, in the 60’s she was the first woman to apprentice in Egypt’s jewellery district. Fast forward to today and her designs hold international recognition as well as a strong fan base in the region – she must be doing something right.

The unique blend of contemporary jewellery, calligraphy and wedding bands in silver and gold, mixed with semi-precious gemstones that are inspired by Ancient Egyptian civilisation have earned her loyal customers that are looking for something with a deeper meaning. Now, Fahmy delivers a handcrafted 12-piece interpretation designed to appeal to all ages.

Focusing on intricate fine wire work, the latest venture offers a fresh artistic perspective that fuses Egyptian, Greco-Roman and Victorian origins. Expect bangles, rings, and earring, in addition to a necklace and matching earrings with healthy dose of semi-precious stones, rose cut diamonds and pearls.

Azza Fahmy said: “The Egyptian woman, whether from a desert or urban location, has had and continues to have a huge impact on modern jewellery, and who we should acknowledge for introducing and popularizing many styles including kerdan and the ubiquitous serpent motif.”

Azza Fahmy available at Harvey Nichols – Dubai.

Mr Porter Launches Own Collection

Mr Porter has officially launched it’s own label online, appropriately named Mr P.

Created by a team of in-house designers, Mr P. is a year-round brand with five limited-edition capsules every year, each trend-driven, seasonal and inspired by a style icon past or present. For the launch, the idea came from postwar ‘School of London’ artists, during their prime in 1960s Soho, London. Think key separates like soft white T-shirts, timeless coats, well fit shirts and classic denim.

With Mr Porter already hosting a number of leading designers, is this one worth a look? Well, it took seven years of customer research, following their shopping habits and feedback, to come up with the pieces that are easy, smart and timeless – so they must have a pretty good understanding of what a contemporary gentleman needs in his closet.

Toby Bateman, Managing Director of Mr Porter, said: “We felt there was a space in our mix of 400-plus brands for something that could present a unique take on wardrobe classics.”

Expect second limited-edition Mr P. capsule to launch in February, with the third in April that will introduce shoes and accessories for AW18.

Why settle for one item when you can have two? Co-ordinated separates are just the ticket as not only being matchy matchy is incredibly stylish, just look at Prada, but it also allows for versatility when you want to wear them apart. The jacket and skirt from Gucci will add a bright note to even the gloomiest of autumn days.
