Expert Tip: At Home Hair Treatments

Emily Ratajkowski bottega veneta

Looking after your hair in between salon appointments is even more important when you live in the harsh desert climate.

We have picked the brain of one of the leading hair stylists and part of the Rossano Ferretti Hair Spa team, Jennie Davies, to give us her expert tips on the best at home hair treatments and advice on how to keep the bounce in your locks.

Protect, Protect, Protect

Prolonged effects of the suns UV rays can cause immense damage to the cuticle and inner cortex of the hair. Most people use sunscreen on their face and body but forget about their hair. The best way to protect your hair is to avoid the sun between the hottest times of the day, 12:00pm to 3:00pm. Use a UV protector spray or leave-in conditioner, braid hair and cover your hair with a hat. Also whilst in the sun it may be a good opportunity to apply a good quality deep conditioning hair mask, as the heat will help it open the cuticles and penetrate deeper into the hair to work more effectively.

Moisture is Key

The best home care treatment I would recommend is to use an amazing quality Deep Conditioning Hair Mask such as the masques from Kerastase. If your hair feels dry and needs some nourishment and shine, Kerastase Masquintense is amazing – there is one for fine hair or thick hair. If your hair is extremely weak, damaged over processed from chemical services then I love to use Masque Therapiste. It’s important to use a Masque at least once a week and leave it on for a minimum of 15 minutes.

Repair the Damage

Once a week I would advise Olaplex or L’Oréal Smartbond, one of the biggest game changers in the hair industry lately. The products work to rebuild and re-link the broken bonds in every type of hair providing real, structural repair from within. Think of it like breaking a bone in your body, and being able to mend the bone back together inside, that’s what this does for your hair. Comb through and sleep with it in, or leave it as long as possible before shampooing and conditioning after. There is also in salon version of this which is mixed inside the colour mixture.

Prevent Hair Loss

Hair loss is one of the most common complaints of my clients here in UAE. Most likely it is the cause of the water here as it is desalinated sea water that contains a lot of chlorine and harsh heavy metals which takes its toll on our locks, causing hair fall and breakage.

I have noticed a huge difference from using a shower filter. The one I use is from a company called Pure Blue which is a local UAE company that makes the filters especially for this region. They are super quick and easy to install yourself and the cartridge needs to be replaced about once every six months (based on average two showers a day). You can feel an instant difference in your hair and skin after the first use.

Eyebrow Trends: What We Learned

aeworld.com middle east magazine SS18 beauty trends paris fashion week

From a full natural finish to microbladed perfect line, eyebrow trends come and go but there are certain rules you should always play by.

Some experimental looks have been making their rounds like the feathered brow where you part the eyebrow down the middle to make it look – you guessed it- like a feather. There has been the barbed wire trend where, with the help of some gel, you twist tips of the brow hairs in different directions, and most recently the wave where you draw on a waved line on the end of your brow.

Some styles were made for Instagram, but for day to day we found that a natural look is always best so here are some tips to keep your brow game strong.

aeworld.com middle east magazine SS18 beauty trends paris fashion week

Define, not alter.

Don’t over manipulate the natural shape of your brow line as that is what works best for your face shape. Start small and then go from there.

Put those tweezers down.

Plucking a pesky hair here and there is fine for maintenance purposes, but we all have got carried away in the past and paid the price, so keep tweezing to a minimum.

Don’t follow trends.

As per above, we doubt that feathered brows will catch on, but there are runway looks that you can try out as long as they do drastically change your eyebrow shape.

All you need is a neat brow.

You might wake up thinking you need a whole lot of makeup to look ‘youself’, but sometimes all it takes is an eyebrow pencil.

Easy on the tinting.

Tinted brows are great for those who want extra definition, but make sure to try a lighter colour first before you end up with black blocks above your eyes that will take weeks to wash out.

Paris Fashion Week: Louis Vuitton SS18

There was already a buzz for the Louis Vuitton SS18 show following a star studded party the night before to celebrate the opening of the new flagship on Place Vendôme in Paris.

The air of celebration for the house, as well as for the end of another dizzying fashion month, was felt among the attendees at Musee du Louvre and it was a spectacular way to round up the last four weeks.

Nicolas Ghesquière has a talent for mixing masculine with feminine silhouettes, daywear with eveningwear and twisting archives into something contemporary and cool. Inspired by Versailles, renaissance meets sportswear was the theme which was carefully blended with romantic and streetwear accents. We saw embroidered tail coats dressed down with satin shorts and bulky sneakers, or with over floral high-neck blousons. The structured mini dresses had a dropped waistline and voluminous skirts in leather worn over striped knits with a backpack – a modern day princess.

The sportier ensembles included logo T-shirts (one raising smiles for featuring the TV poster for Stranger Things) that he styled with a baroque sleeveless jacket or over balloon sleeve shirts and partnered with patent leather pants or contrast striped trousers, all slightly rolled up at the bottom. There was plenty of pretty towards the end as embellished dresses and floral gowns glided down the runway. They had free movement but structured on top with dramatic frilled sleeves for an elegant yet youthful spirit.

As for accessories, maxi tote bags were carried by models that were given a bit of an edge with a single chain. Speedy bags felt tougher and athletic while other tote styles resembled a doctors bag.

When you have an inspiration like the Versailles, you could be stepping into dangerous territory of clothes looking constumey and unwearable, but this is Ghesquière and it seems like there’s no era, trend or idea that he can’t turn into a must-have creation any cool girl would rush to wear.

Paris Fashion Week: Chanel SS18

Chanel SS18 was not just a runway show, but an immersive experience. This time round, Karl Lagerfeld brought us into his dream world of tropical greenery and waterfalls with the collection focusing on various aspects of transparency.

Walking into the Grand Palais feels like you’re either stepping into the wild jungle or Jumanji. Either way, we would comfortably stay next to the man-made lagoon for the rest of the day, but for that we need to keep our Chanel tweed dry. Cue the perplex plastic capes, wide brim hats, hoods, elbow-length gloves and contrast toe cap boots.

There was plenty to entice any Chanel fan, from the tie dye blue summer dresses with flowing trains, ruffled skirts and reworked denim with a dose of couture fringing. Tweed suiting was present, but this time round it came in ice cream pastel hues and some as a crop top and mini skirt pairing. The second half brought in a lot of aqua blue shades to mimic the watery surroundings, which then opened up to more classic feminine shapes like flowing fabrics and beautifully cut white mini dresses.

It was all accessorised with clear earrings shaped as water drops, over-knee boots and an array of bags including logo maxi shapes, chain strap shoulder styles and mini hard clutches.

It was a forward thinking collection with plenty of Chanel favourites given a modern spin, and although we may not necessarily need to waterproof attire in the Middle East, it won’t stop us getting our names on the waitlist for one of those plastic pair of boots.

Eat Like A Fashion Model

Wild & The Moon, Al Serkal Avenue Dubai.

Over the past month we have seen many slender figures walk for some of the biggest designers in the world, but how does a fashion model keep healthy during a gruelling schedule?

Clothes may have been the talking point at Stella McCartney, but it was the backstage set up that piqued our interest. While getting ready to strut their stuff, models were spotted tucking into a selection of treats from one of our favourite organic eateries in Dubai.

The Parisian-born Wild and The Moon, which can be found in Al Serkal Avenue, is known for their 100% organic food, juices and snacks and as they focus mainly on plant- based, gluten-free delights. It’s no surprise McCartney chose them to keep her models happy backstage.

On top of that, the café strives to use local suppliers, favours biodegradable packaging and are constantly aiming for 0% waste – very much the ethos behind the Stella McCartney SS18 message.

Paris Fashion Week: Stella McCartney SS18

A post shared by Stella McCartney (@stellamccartney) on Oct 2, 2017 at 2:25am PDT

In the fashion world driven by trends, it’s nice to witness a collection with real substance and that’s exactly what you get with Stella McCartney SS18 line.

Known for her outspoken approach to eco-friendly designs and sustainability, McCartney presented a collection titled Trashion that feature some pieces created from 100% recycled material – including the invitations.

Now you might think it’s all going to be unwearable, but this British-born designer has a magical touch that has won her nods from the fashion critics for years, as well as a strong celebrity fan base which included Kylie Minogue sitting on the front row today.

The clothes carried an eighties feel with power shoulders, washed denim, crinkled fabrics in fuchsia pink and prom-like dresses dominating most of the runway. In the mix there were also ethnical prints on maxi gowns, airy jumpsuits and bright colour blocking.

Some of the offering had an undone, borderline masculine feel to them with tough boiler suits and jackets to flat sandals, but there was an understated sense of femininity felt through off-shoulder balloon-sleeve dresses, maxi ruffles, sheer skirts, blazers nipped at the waist, and trousers tied at the ankles to add a curvier shape. Best in show? Acid washed double denim with a boyish fit styled with pointed toe pumps.

High fashion is sustainable fashion, and it has never looked better.

Paris Fashion Week: Valentino SS18

Pierpaolo Piccioli focused on fantasy of the moon and nature for Valentino SS18 collection.

He picks up on the elements of the mysterious planet by playing with embellishment and shimmering fabrics, while his take on earth’s beauty is seen through floral embroidery.

Modest but never solemn, elegant but never dull, Piccioli’s skills lie in the ability to inject lightness into his creations that lift them to something modern and wearable. We saw rain jackets in sheer shiny fabrics that reflect the light with every move, there were simple vests dripping in embellishment that were styled with sequin trim slouchy trousers, while the round pearl earrings dangled from models’ ears like ornamental moons.

His best work? Creating a heart-stopping beautiful gowns. Be it with extreme low-necklines, long-sleeved, embroidered or embellished – there is always a sense of balance and fluidity, yet you know wearing a gown like that will have an unparalleled sense of occasion.

Palette centered on reds, greens and pastels that were worked into his romantic way of designing blousons, cargo trousers, tank tops, shirts and dresses. He played with volumes as well as hemlines with plenty of day wear and evening options to please any Valentino devotee.

This may have been a fantasy for Piccioli, but we are glad to see it made into reality.

Paris Fashion Week: Celine SS18

celine ss18 pfw aeworld.com

You know something special is about to happen when you enter a tented show space designed by Chilean architect Smiljan Radic with seating covered in various printed posters and bright blankets – it’s Celine SS18 time.

Phoebe Philo presented a collection full of fluid tailoring, statement details and supersize shapes. Many would want to snap up the maxi trench coats and pleated asymmetric skirts that were styled with polo shirts. The piece were designed for a powerful woman of today, and who wouldn’t want to be part of this chic squad?

Masculine lines of trench coats and leather jackets were softened with the help of a looser cut and cinched at the waist to give a more feminine finish. There was the Céline look that any woman would crave: a bold suit with trousers sweeping right down to the floor. Despite the usual cool, urban, Parisian feel of a Céline girl, there was an added softness to her in a form of lace panels, subtle sequins and cut out details.

Philo threw into the mix a few charming pieces like brogues with long tassels, oversized shoulder bags and large buckle belts, though it were the clothes themselves that stood out from the accessories.

This is the kind of minimalist uniform every woman wants to wear. Practical, elegant and timeless. With many houses driven by trends, you can always rely on Céline to deliver luxury statement pieces, and yet there is always some fresh about them.
