WATCH: Calvin Klein Spring 2018 Runway Show
Ever since Raf Simons took over at Calvin Klein, New York Fashion Week got some of its mojo back and it became one of the most anticipated shows of the schedule. He revived the muted label to something bright and daring and his latest collection goes that extra step.
For SS18, Simons turned to the classic American horror genre, the cultural nostalgia sparkled by TV series like Stranger Things and upcoming remake of Steven Kings’ It. Ruby Red dominated the set design as well as the clothes with splatters of red covering leather coats and dresses.
We start with satin cowboy-like suiting in block colours, one of which was modeled by Kaia Gerber, Cindy Crawford’s daughter, who made her runway debut after just tuning 16.
Loose silhouettes of white dresses and satin tunics with Andy Warhol photography prints followed the proceeding and we imagine will be on every buyers list. Simons loves art and that translated into opera coats, ball skirts and gowns in deep colours of burgundy, green and caramel that had dots of what looked like black ink.
He worked with controlled volume. There were wide shapes for capes and rain coats that were pulled together with strings and zips to give them a more defined shape. Dresses had a shine to them with plunge necklines while the skirt cut reminded us of 90’s prom gowns. Other dresses were adorned in swishy fringing that have now officially become the next fashion obsession.
As for accessories? Fringed bags, logo straps, full arm gloves, point toe courts and bright patent boots (some with crystal lines down the middle) have already got us thinking how we can inject a bolder feel to our wardrobes.

New York Fashion Week SS18: Oscar De La Renta
A new era is emerging at Oscar De La Renta.
Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, who also look after Monse, been on the job for a year and are taking the brand in a new, more casual direction.
They have both trained under De La Renta and are now gradually leading the house away from the dramatic ballgowns and black-tie worthy separates that it is known for.
The SS18 collection still carries a level of drama we are used to seeing, but there is a youthful sense to it, like a grande dame who shook off her heavy fabrics in choice of something more lighthearted.
The tulle gowns were dipped in bright shades and crystals, sequin T-shirts were layered under bustier dresses and there was a heavy focus on pop art (the venue was the Sotheby’s York Avenue galleries) with splatters of rainbow paint print covering denim and elongated shirts.
Kim and Garcia might as well have designed this line for a chic gallery owner or high-flying artist, which will appeal to a laid-back fans of luxury, but they haven’t forgotten their A-List clientele who turn to the label for couture-level pieces. The blazers were beautifully cut along with cropped trousers that had movement with every step. Shoes also held a cheerful disposition with a selection sporting a colourful pointed toe while others had the designers name printed on them.
Oscar De La Renta has become adventurous and should carry the name as proudly as it does on the full skirted gown with “Oscar” spelt out in giant sequin letters.

If you are heading to New York or Milan Fashion Weeks, you may just spot the giant Gucci art installations to celebrate the new Bloom fragrance.
This is the first fragrance for the House under new creative direction and in typical Alessandro Michele style, it’s go big or go home.
The brand commissioned Ignasi Monreal to create his take on the Gucci urban garden concept as part of Art Wall project and we think it’s blooming beautiful addition.
The 760-square meter wall on Lafayette Street in New York City’s SoHo neighbourhood and the 176 – square meter wall in Milan’s Largo la Foppa were transformed into a fairytale of hand painted blooms and foliage alongside the fragrance bottle.
The Gucci Bloom Art Walls will be on display until the end of November.

Over the years, streetwear has stepped into main fashion and now everyone is looking out for designers that bring a high-end approach to this trend.
Bunyamin Aydin launched Les Benjamins in 2011 with an aim to bring his take on the cultures, traditions, and rituals in the East to the streetwise man.
We chat with the man behind a sophisticated approach to streetwear.
How do you think streetwear has evolved over the years?
Streetwear is a movement that derived from the punks. They were the first to look to the streets when it came to fashion. Now people listen to hip hop and wear sports sneakers to be comfortable.
What are your tips for dressing casually well?
Be yourself and focus on one specific detail that will stick out from all other items.
The AW17 collection is inspired by Mongolia, how did you approach your vision?
I was highly inspired by the Eagle Hunters in Mongolia. The way they communicate with their Eagles and all the culture around it is astonishing.
What is the standout piece from the collection and why?
It definitely has to be the oversized Bomber Jacket with the Mongolian landscape on the back.
You aim to bring an international focal point to your streetwear concepts, what message are you trying to get across.
Awareness of different cultures. Togetherness. Positive message and just culturally rich pieces of clothing.
What are your favourite place to shop and do in Dubai?
My favorite restaurants are Miss Lily’s, 3 Fils and Salt at Kite Beach. The energy and vibe at Al Serkal Avenue is my kind of place to hang out.
Best advice you’ve ever received?
To always be open-minded and ask someone who knows better.
And what do you like to wear?
I’m very simple. Black tee, black sweatpants and the sneaker of the day.

New York Fashion Week Day One kicked off yesterday with Tom Ford making an exciting comeback to the schedule.
His collection – suiting in denim, velvet and shimmering fabrics along with body hugging floor length dresses – was well received by front row guests that included Doutzen Kroes and Julianne Moore. The after party also sparkled with celebrities like Kim Kardashian West and Karlie Kloss, both sporting platinum blonde hair.
Speaking of Kim, her husband Kanye West announced that he will not be showing Yeezy Season Six collection during NYFW. According to Business Of Fashion, there was no reason given.

Tips For A Clean Shave At Home
On most days you’d go to a trusty barber’s to get a quick tidy up, but on occasions when there is just no time – how can you achieve a clean shave at home?
We share some tips from a pro barber Samantha Lloyd over Chaps & Co, a vintage barbershop offering you treatments fit for a gentleman.
What razor?
The best razor advice is a cut throat (single blade razor) if you can use it because it is the cleanest shave you can possibly get. If you cannot use a clean single blade then another suggestion is the Gillette Fusion Proglide Flexball. This really shaves closer, with less irritation than other razors. There are five blades, a lubricating strip and built-in trimming blade.
What if you cut yourself?
To prevent this from ever happening do not let your face become cold whilst shaving. Make sure your skin is warm for the hair to become moist and easy to remove in one swipe with the blade.
It’s important to shave slowly and gently and don’t push down too hard with the razor. If you rush, you’re likely to cut your skin.
Remedy for nicks?
If you get razor cuts at home, the immediate remedy is to splash cold water on your face, the colder the water, the better. It will cause your blood vessels to constrict, causing the flow of blood to slow down and eventually clot. For faster and more effective results, try rubbing an ice cube on the cut.
You can also use a bit of your antiperspirant deodorant on your wound. The aluminum chloride in them not only prevents sweating but also acts as an antibacterial, great for all cuts.
How to prevent skin rashes and other problems?
Change your razors regularly. An overused blade can cause a rash by irritating your skin. To prevent ingrown hairs rub your face in a circular motion using a wet washcloth or an exfoliating scrub to tease out any stubborn ingrown hairs.
Final word.
Always have with a sharp razor. Wet your skin with warm water before shaving and apply a shave gel or cream. Shave in the same direction your hair is growing and make sure you have warm water open your pores.

Jewellery Focus: Selim Mouzannar
Selim Mouzannar
Selim Mouzannar wanted to create a place where Beiruti women looking for fine and unique pieces come and mingle, but now his designs have gone global stocking across the world including Dubai.
With a background in jewellery, both his father and grandfather were also jewellers, he launched his line of delicate designs in 90s in Beirut. With inspirations drawn from the early memories of visits to the now disappeared Gold Souk of Beirut downtown, he is has become recognized by his mastery of the “falamanki” cut, or rose-cut, a classic Ottoman jewelry tradition.
After graduating from Paris’s Institut National de Gemmologie in the 1980s, Mouzannar traveled and worked in both the West and East before establishing a shop in Achrafieh, one of the oldest districts in Beirut.
You can feel that the intricate designs have had the privilege of time that was spent in sourcing and crafting the pieces that ooze the traditional but feel very now. It’s no surprise that Mouzannar won a global fan base, us included.

Chanel has released a video for the much awaited fragrance Gabrielle featuring brand ambassador Kristen Stewart.
The film, directed by Ringan Ledwidge, celebrates modern femininity built on confidence and independence that Stewart brings across in a dance to Beyoncé’s Runnin.
