The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi has announced that Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will officially open on December 11, 2026, marking a significant addition to the capital’s rapidly expanding cultural landscape.
Located on Saadiyat Island, the museum will focus on modern and contemporary art from the 1960s to the present. Its collection, which has been developed since 2009, will bring together artists and perspectives from around the world while reflecting the UAE’s own stories, geography and position as a longstanding crossroads of culture and trade.
Works will span painting, sculpture, installation, photography, moving image and new media. Rather than following a strictly chronological path, the galleries will explore connections between different generations and regions through themes including abstraction, popular culture, land, language and storytelling.
Designed by the late Pritzker Architecture Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry, the museum will contain 30 galleries connected by a central atrium. Ten sculptural cones will punctuate its distinctive skyline, with nine clad in stainless steel mesh and one finished in onyx and glass. Reaching heights of up to 88 metres, the cones have also been designed to provide natural ventilation and shade.
The development comprises 11,600 square metres of interior gallery space and 23,000 square metres of outdoor exhibition areas, within a total built-up area of 80,000 square metres.
Guggenheim Abu Dhabi joins Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi within Saadiyat Cultural District.
As part of the Guggenheim network, which includes museums in New York, Venice and Bilbao, the Abu Dhabi institution will bring a distinctly regional perspective to global conversations on contemporary art.
