Sharjah’s cultural landscape is set to welcome a significant new addition with the launch of Irthi Museum, described as the region’s first institution dedicated to contemporary craft.
Located within the forthcoming Sharjah Creative Quarter, the museum will explore the relationship between inherited techniques and contemporary creative practice. Its programme will extend beyond preservation to encompass research, education, design innovation, collection development and public engagement, helping indigenous crafts remain relevant for future generations.
The announcement marks 10 years since Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council began its work to revive Emirati craft heritage and create greater opportunities for artisans. Through the museum, the council will establish a permanent platform where traditional knowledge can be documented, reinterpreted and shared with audiences from the UAE and beyond.
“The Irthi Museum stands as a living bridge between heritage techniques and contemporary expressions, a promise to keep our rich craft practices intact and carry them forward into the future,” said Her Excellency Reem Bin Karam, Director General of Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council. “It is a celebration of craft not as a preserved relic, but as a vibrant, evolving legacy.”
The museum will also provide artisans with access to resources, creative networks and international exposure. By presenting craft as an evolving form of cultural expression, it aims to demonstrate the intelligence of materials, the value of handmade production and the importance of knowledge passed between generations.
Its location reflects Sharjah’s established commitment to cultural preservation and artistic exchange. Recognised by UNESCO as a Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art, the emirate has developed a growing network of museums, foundations and creative institutions.
Irthi Museum will sit alongside the Sharjah Design Centre, Sharjah Fashion Lab and Qasimi Studio & Archives within Sharjah Creative Quarter. Led by Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi and Her Highness Sheikha Hoor bint Sultan Al Qasimi, the multidisciplinary district is being managed by BEEAH and designed by Taller de Arquitectura – Mauricio Rocha in collaboration with Daniel Rosselló.
Together, its institutions will support collaboration across fashion, design, archives and contemporary craft, further strengthening Sharjah’s position within the international creative landscape.
